Steppingstone envisions a more just and equitable world where all students can actualize the life-transforming benefits of a college degree.
From the President & CEO and Board Chair
Dear Friends,
We are excited to share our annual report celebrating Steppingstone’s impact and Scholars’ achievements over the past year, empowered by your support.
There is a certain weight to another year of hard work. Page after page embodies the dedication of several hundred friends who believe all should have access to the lifetransforming power of a college degree.
Steppingstone’s supporters have proven their commitment with endurance, sticking with us through every mile of our journey with Scholars for 34 years and counting. You have our deepest thanks for that, because in our work toward educational equity, each year brings challenges both known and new. This year, new obstacles included tuition rates soaring alongside the most challenging year for financial aid in recent memory. We are also starting to see data following the rollback of affirmative action which shows us that fewer students of color are enrolling in college.
Certain obstacles are hard to anticipate, much less train for. But your support keeps us nimble. We make it our job to learn quickly and guide Scholars along their own path to success. Through all the challenges this year, Scholars persevered. We celebrated enrollments and graduations together. Our team even took exciting steps to build expanded career readiness programming, addressing the challenges low-income students and students of color face launching their careers, even when they have a college degree. We look forward to sharing more about this initiative in the coming year.
Through all of our work with Scholars, at every educational level, we heard many stories of strength found in community.
As one high school Scholar put it: “I love being around people at Steppingstone, because everyone around you just wants the best for you. They have been my greatest supporters in life.”
This same feeling is salient among the youngest Scholars in middle school. “Steppingstone has the most caring, supportive and best community ever. I made so many friends and so many memories, meanwhile learning new things to really get me ahead in school.”
This is why we do what we do.
Whatever personal challenges or triumphs you will remember about 2024, please take a moment to celebrate your generous actions as a member of the “best community ever.”
Thank you for making Steppingstone possible.
Kelly D. Glew President
Robert P. Henderson, Jr. Board Chair
