Steppingstone
Steppingstone envisions a more just and equitable world where all students can actualize the life-transforming benefits of a college degree.

From the President Power of One

At Steppingstone, we believe that when one succeeds, we all succeed. We know we are strongest when we work together.

As a community, we accomplished another year of providing holistic support for more than 1,400 Scholars—from summer classes to school admissions, from belonging and inclusion to career exploration.

Scholars did the hard work. They showed up to programming and asked thoughtful questions. They envisioned the future they want to create for themselves. Each day, they took a step closer to their goals. Each day, Alumni showed us exactly how powerful and beautiful the future can be.

Together, we are cultivating our tomorrow.

I encourage you to explore our proven results in the impact report enclosed, knowing that you make our impact possible. Because of your gift, Steppingstone means the following to Scholars:

“Opportunity and ownership.”

“Being surrounded by people who have the same goals.”

“Growing a community, a support system.”

“One of the first times I was ever proud of myself.”

As Berline Thermidor, a Scholar attending UMass Boston, shared: “To me, Steppingstone is being open to a new world of possibilities and opportunities—because they will always have your back no matter what, and will always help you.”

With each and every gift, you have kept this promise alive.

Thank you, year after year, for sustaining Steppingstone: a community that Scholars can always depend on. We could not do this work without you.

Walking the Walk

As an education consultant, I talk daily with people in school communities all around the country. I’ve witnessed an unbelievable amount of time, thought, and creativity spent rebuilding over the last two years. In the face of historic challenges brought by COVID and other ongoing inequities in Boston and beyond, we still have a great deal of work ahead in our schools both to recover from the disruption and trauma, and toward building a new tomorrow.

Across the nation, students and teachers are working to make up for lost time away from the classroom. Hiring is a challenge. College enrollment rates have dropped significantly as tuition and student debt have become egregiously burdensome for many families. And yet, in our struggling economy, a bachelor’s degree remains a proven and critical ticket to higher-wage opportunities.

For many, amid these pervasive challenges, Steppingstone is a beacon.

In our own Boston neighborhoods, Steppingstone has worked directly with thousands of students and their family members to ensure that a college degree is attainable, and that students can graduate without crippling debt.

For educational leaders across the country, this year our National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) focused their annual conference on the theme “Meeting the Moment.” We continue to spark vital conversations and share resources nationally.

The fact is: a just and equitable tomorrow is one where all students have access to a college education. And Steppingstone will not stop until we get there.

Thank you for being our partner in this essential work.

Steppingstone prepares students from historically marginalized communities to access, navigate, and graduate from college.

In Boston, we provide academic, social-emotional, and college readiness programming from as early as fifth grade and continuing through college graduation.

Nationally, we connect the people, practices, and innovations essential for eliminating barriers to college and career success.

Steppingstone’s Impact

The Need:

In Boston, the vast majority of public school students never earn a bachelor’s degree.

Current data shows that only 37% of BPS graduates enrolled in a four-year college in 2021. Historically, only about half of BPS high school graduates have enrolled in and completed a postsecondary credential within six years of high school graduation.* Each year, thousands of students are left behind.

Steppingstone’s work has never been more urgent and more important.

We provide college-access programs to families who dream of college for their children, but face serious obstacles. It’s our job to help students navigate barriers on the way to fulfilling their aspirations.

In 2021–2022:

14,000

hours spent with Scholars over the summer

1,400+

Scholars served, from fifth graders to college students

95%

37% of Scholars’ parents surveyed would recommend Steppingstone

*BPS data includes graduates of the three public exam schools, who tend to enroll at and graduate from fouryear colleges at a much higher rate than other public schools.

At Steppingstone, we invest in futures. We work to eliminate barriers and close equity gaps in education to positively impact Scholars, their families, and our larger community.

Since Our Founding in 1990:

With over 30 years of experience, our results are proven.

Steppingstone provides Scholars with an environment that pairs high expectations with meaningful support. While Scholars’ accomplishments are diverse, they all share a love of learning, a commitment to education, and the knowledge that they can rise to any challenge with confidence in their own abilities to succeed.

80%

99% 93%

of Scholars earn a bachelor’s degree within six years.

85%

of Scholars are the first in their family to attend college.

**Steppingstone has information for 93% of Scholars who have completed the academic component and are old enough to have graduated from high school.

T hank you for making Steppingstone possible.

We could not do this work without you.
