Welcome to Issue #1
The cover image is of Sharon, who was the house lifemodel at North Warwickshire College, Nuneaton, Warwickshire back in the days of Steve B Robinson’s Art and Design Foundation studies. She was slim, blonde, willing to accommodate student requests and altogether nice person. However. Her name was actually Louise. She changed her name during the two year part time course because she wanted to be taken more seriously and thought that her profession and her blonde hair pegged her as a blonde bimbo. Students thought that maybe the name she chose fitted in well with the dreaded bimbo thoughts thus enhancing the very opposite of her desired effect. Staying with the name her parents gave her, or simply dying her hair black, or changing career didn’t seem to occur to her. So the painting was produced in a loose style using a pallet knife; a response to the uptight , pedantic, and ……..lets face it…………..boring, works previously produced in the huge liferoom. For the artist it was a release, a new found joy, but after a few more attempts (one other of Sharon, nee Louise, and a few cats, oh and just one abstract produced post degree) the technique was abandoned. The image clearly shows Sharon with yellow hair sitting relaxed in a wicker chair (she had a cushion, don’t worry) covered with a blue drape, and below her is a headspace for another portrait, representing her former self, Louise, but not actually painted as it’s the same person in every detail. Although the knife painting was all but abandoned the expressionist/impressionist capture of the drapes and shapes all around her and, indeed, of the model too, does reveal itself in future works and could be said, in 2015, to be a feature of his works.
