Despite the wall-to-wall fabulous sports coverage we have been receiving on Sky lately, with some great results from rugby, league and soccer teams, and the prospects of a fantastic Cricket World Cup, occasionally the House Boss asks nicely if we can watch something that she understands. Of late, this has been one or other of the 3000 shows devoted to people decorating, buying, selling or rebuilding homes. We watched one the other day where a fairly well-heeled couple were looking to buy a couple of properties; a 10-bedroom home in England, and a mountain chalet in the Alps. The presenter waxed lyrical about the wonderful views of rolling fields and farmland in north Yorkshire, and the idyllic setting of an alpine village. Tree-covered, craggy slopes provided a backdrop to a holiday town at one site, and the couple were working on a budget of approaching the equivalent of a couple of million New Zealand dollars. On another show they showed a couple looking at a beach house with shots of unspoiled beaches, and again, the presenters were in awe. On the weekend, we took a road trip south and took in a few of the sights. Within a couple of hours of Franklin we have amazing beaches, beautiful farmland, rugged mountains, scenic walks, rocky gorges with clean-flowing rivers and views that match almost anything in the world. Most of the time, I reckon we take it for granted. On the weekend, I tried to look at our country from an international viewpoint. It really is pretty special, and, without getting too soppy, I think it’s nice every now and then to take a moment, actually look around, and appreciate the natural treasures we have.

Mangrove clearance brings back aquatic life After watching the pro-mangroves documentary on Sunday night, if I hadn’t been involved with clearing the mangroves I would have thought they were beneficial. But it is hard to believe these are the same ones that we have cleared. Under the canopy of these is a one-metre to two-metre deep putrid mess of dead leaves and mud. Yes, there were a few barnacles, snails and the odd crab. I have been back each year for three years removing the seedlings and now this area is teeming with crabs, snails and other creatures. Each year is also notable for less seedlings and more wading birds that we had not seen before. I am not the only one noticing this as I get a lot of feedback from residents who have noticed the same. The documentary also mentioned that the Hokianga Harbour has had thousands of hectares of area invaded by these pests which, as a friend commented, is the only legal land reclaim-

Happy over hubcap helper A Waiuku woman says it’s great that people take the time to try to help out others after she lost a hubcap from her car last week. She was travelling from the outskirts of town and after stopping at the Mitre 10 she was approached by a young man who said he had seen the hubcap come off and followed her to let her know. She was able to backtrack and recover the part, and says it is nice to see people are still happy to go out of their way to assist others.

er in New Zealand. It was also showing the flounder and stingrays in their habitat, the flounder especially burying themselves in mud. These fish, in the words of the documentary, have lost thousands of hectares of feeding grounds to these invaders as a flounder will not feed where it can not bury itself in the mud to hide, and also the air roots are in the way. What is very noticeable in the area of about eight hectares that the council has reluctantly given us consent to clear, is that bird life is back as well as schools of mullet and sprats. Residents also comment on the amount of boats, canoes and kayaks that can now access the Tamakae River to the wharf. The council says they are all for us to continue, but we have been waiting about two years now for a new consent for more area to clear. Frank Hagenson Waiuku

Pitstop

on 3000km walk SMART CASUAL WEAR THIS WEEK AT GABLES

Waiuku’s Di and Wayne Knight had a whistlestop return to their home town last week after completing their first month of walking the length of New Zealand on Te Araroa - the New Zealand trail. The 3000km route stretching from Cape Reinga to Bluff features a series of coastal and bush trails which link to create a walking track the length of the country. Di and Wayne set off in October and have endured nights where their tent was almost blown away in sand dunes, suffered from heat exhaustion, sunburn and blisters, and discovered that they had to moderate their plans for how far they could walk in a day as the trek took its toll. However they are having the time of their lives, and have met people from all over the world joining them from time to time on the trail, have enjoyed rural hospi-

tality at its finest and seen some of New Zealand’s unspoiled and rugged beauty up close and personal as they made their way south. The couple are writing a blog as they travel, detailing some of their experiences and posting photographs of their adventure. Their trip to Whananaki in the far north is an indication of their travelling lifestyle. After camping at a DoC campsite, they road-walked before leaving the roads for a 13km bush walk to Whananaki North. “Road walking sucks, it kills my feet,” Di says. “We stayed at the camp ground there. What a great place. The managers there were awesome. Had home made hamburger chips and beer for $12 then we got apple pie and cream and bread and spreads for breakfast. We will be the only Te Araroa walkers going

After a low-tide walk from Waiwera to Silverdale, then a few days later a coastal walk from Browns Bay to Devonport, they spent the night in Blockhouse Bay before a boat ride to Awhitu. By the time they reached Waiuku on Tuesday it was time for some treatment on Di’s feet from local podiatrist Treena Harris, (pictured above), before they set off again on a kayak trip up the Waikato to Mercer and then on to the rest of their trek. They expect to have Christmas in Wellington and will complete the 3000km journey early next year. You can follow Wayne and Di’s trip on their blog: wayno-di.blogspot.co.nz.

News Bites Community help after crash Give polocrosse a go!

AA says council parking charges miss the point

The AA says that if Auckland Transport (AT) wants to reduce the number of private cars commuting to Auckland’s CBD, the focus needs to go on making public transport a more realistic option, not raising parking charges. AT yesterday announced that Early Bird parking (priced at $13) would be removed from Auckland Council-owned parking buildings from 1 December 2014, and replaced by an all-day rate of $17. Prices for leased parking spaces would also be raised.

Glenbrook market gardener Reupena Kovati says he owes a massive thank you to the local community. He’s appreciative for the support following a truck crash, the subsequent discovery that he had previously-unknown serious medical issues, and his emotional battles during recovery. Just over three years ago, Reupena fell asleep at the wheel of his truck on the Waiuku-Drury highway, crashing into a power pole and suffering a broken leg. At the time, he felt fortunate to have escaped with just that injury, but while in hospital, testing showed he was suffering from a

Below: Reupena Kovati says a truck crash may have been a blessing in disguise after he was diagnosed with previously-unknown conditions while in hospital.

Valuation checks crash website Auckland Council says an unprecedented level of activity on its website was likely to be the cause of technical issues last week. The council expects problems to continue as long as activity remains at levels experienced last week. The website experienced a more than 1,000% increase in page views for a single day. The site gets between 80,000 to 90,000 daily page views, but on one day last week, despite the problems, there were 977,968 page views. People can phone the council’s call centre on 0508 000 021 if they are unable to access their property value via the website.

Pituitary Adenoma, with his pituitary gland in his brain swollen to three times its normal size. He was also diagnosed with sleep apnoea at the same time. As he says now, in some ways the accident was fortunate, as without it, and the hospital tests, he would not have been aware of the pituitary gland issues - a medical condition which in some cases can lead to blindness. Those discoveries, and the damage from the accident itself, saw Reupena facing what turned out to be almost two years of recovery through several operations and hospitalisation. “At times through my recovery I had also battled with depression and suicidal thoughts. But thanks to the support of my family and friends, the wider community of Glenbrook and my church family from Waiuku and Districts Combined Churches, I managed to make it through,” he says today. “A big thank you goes out to Lynn Ralph of Glenbrook, who organised a roster to cook meals for my family. We thank the residents of Glenbrook who were involved in this,” he adds. Reupena says members of the St Andrews Church helped in many ways - picking tomatoes and doing other physical work at the market garden, while others offered expertise and help with business and finance during the difficult times. “There was so much help and support that there are too many names to name,” Reupena says, “but I just want to reiterate my gratitude. “From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank everyone who helped me get through such a difficult time. May God bless you in return for your generosity.”

Local schools get new ratings Local schools will find out this week what their new decile ratings are. Decile ratings are assessed after each census and any school is entitled to seek a review of its new decile rating if it believes the rating doesn’t accurately reflect the socio-economic circumstances of its students. Of the country’s 2406 state and state-integrated schools, roughly one-third have moved to a lower decile rating, one-third have moved up, and onethird have remained the same. A total of 800 schools have moved to a lower decile rating, while 784 schools have moved to a higher decile rating. For another 822 schools, there has been no change.

Elijah and Mt Carmel

In this Article we will travel way back in time

to when Israel thought that they actually had their worship all together, but they were in fact, way off track. So far off in fact, that they were actually worshiping a Pagan Deity “Baal.” Now Baal; which means “Master” or “Lord” or even “Husband” was the “Weather God” or “Rain God,” so he allegedly blessed with good rains and good fertile lands. Latter ages called him “Hadad” and he is sometimes referred to as “Baal Hadad.” One can even find his symbol in lots of interesting places today, so keep a look out for the Baal Hadad symbol; it has even crept into some Churches. Now you can understand why Israel was most confused when Creator God turned off the rain and dew, and their Baal could not turn the taps back on again, so they had a big problem, and Elijah put it plainly, choose which God you want, “The Weather God” or the weather god, so the people on Carmel answered not a word.

All these Titles attributed to Baal are great but should be only applied to Jesus Christ who should always be our Lord and Master, Husband (Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Revelation). But here was Israel worshiping what appeared to be the true God, but they were in fact worshiping a fake or clone. John the Baptist was preaching what was in essence the Elijah Message, of repent, be baptized, or to forget false god’s and return to the only real God, the God of Israel, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, and All things therein.

Jesus preached the very same thing, he challenged the Leadership when error crept in, and so did the Apostles even Paul and Timothy (who appears to have stepped into Paul’s shoes when Paul was finally imprisoned and executed) and all the early Church. Satan is a master at shifting our focus from what we believe to what he wants us to swallow, “hook line and sinker.” As Christians, we have only one ruler to measure everything by, and that is scripture. Isaiah gives us this good admonition in Isaiah 8:20 “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them.” The Law is loosely the first five books, the books of Moses, and the Testimony is all the rest. As Christians, everything comes from and is tested by Scripture, “it is written,” but how many of us actually read it, let alone study it. How often do you hear that this section, or these Bible books are no longer relevant, but Paul told Timothy that “All Scripture” is God breathed and important. Jesus told Satan that man should follow “every word” that God speaks.

not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” In Hebrew the leaves of the Tree of Life are for healing, and the leaves equate to portions of Scripture, we call leaves, book pages, so how many pages a day do you consume of scripture? Have you studied for yourself to check out that what you believe is actually what scripture really actually says? We need to let scripture expound and interpret scripture, and not some human who says well I think this is what it means. We need to check verses with other verses to make sure it all lines up straight and true. Check theme with theme. We need to remember that God will not change, or deviate from what he has said in the past, so be very careful of anybody who tells you that God wanted this back then, but this totally different thing now, God will not change, that is why we can rely on him keeping his word in the future. Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Malachai 3:6a “For I

[am] the LORD, I change not.” In Daniel we have a portion where a false power arises in our days and does actually change things, a Baal Hadad? Daniel 7:25 “And he shall speak [great] words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” We can have a committee and vote and decree that “Gravity” has been abolished, we can firmly believe it, but can we actually achieve it? Nor can God’s decrees ever be changed, we can vote, decree, hold meetings, or whatever, but God’s word stands immovable, unchanged and eternally trustworthy and sure. In the parable of the 10 Bridesmaids, what tested their god; was the shock announcement found in Matthew 25:6 “And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” This is Mt Carmel all over again, in our comparison, five followed the Creator God and were ready, and five followed Baal Hadad. In 2 Timothy 3:5 “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” Paul admonishes us to have nothing to do with clone god’s, we need only the Creator God. In the book of Revelation 14:6-11 we have depicted three messages of warning, these are the last ever to Planet Earth, because Jesus comes next, the Bridegroom. These messages are identical in theme to Elijah and Mt Carmel, and we are admonished to worship the Creator, Revelation 14:7 “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.” So we have the Elijah cry from Carmel once more, while we still have time before the cry goes out that the Bridegroom is here, let us make sure that we are serving the Creator and not Baal Hadad (in whatever guise he may be in), or you may be locked outside of the door, Christ Jesus our Lord.

Successful times at Eden Academy Eden Christian Academy in Tuakau is celebrating recent student and school successes. A joint fundraising event run by LaValla events centre and the Academy to raise funds for a Primary playground, saw about 200 people enjoying two hours of comedy presented by self-professed ‘Crazy Mamma’ Suzie Johnson. The evening also included eight stalls displaying professional make-up, jewellery, flowers, hairdressing and more. Eden Christian Academy students were responsible for setting up before the event, helping with the organisation on the evening and the tidy up afterwards. The $2775 raised will be used for the installation of the Primary playground during the December holidays. The school is also celebrating the achievement of student Paiton Taylor who came second in the North Island Titles BMX championships for 6 Year girls recently, and will feature in the National Championships next year. The school is also looking forward to its first formal school ball at LaValla next Saturday, where the first prefects will be announced. Top right: Paiton Taylor with her trophies. Knitting on display at CMA

The Waiuku CMA (Community Morning Activities) Group held a well-patronised Sale of Work at the Baptist Church Hall in Kent Street, Waiuku recently. The sale featured sewing, cards, home baking and preserves, raffles and a white elephant stall, as well as a large range of knitted items. Admiring some of the knitting were Waiuku’s Lorne Bulte and Noelene Burr. Many of the items were knitted by CMA’s Marlene Hughes, (left). Lorne Bulte said she was looking for some knitted items as, with knitting for 26 great-grandchildren, she was finding it difficult to keep up!

Help sought for needy local families Waiuku Family Support is hoping community members can assist local residents who are less fortunate as they seek donations for this year’s Christmas parcels. Every year the group makes up parcels of Christmas gifts for families who are unable to buy presents for their children. Locals make this possible through donations of new toys, books and lollies suitable for children from new-born to 12 years old. Anyone able to help is asked to leave their donation with the team at Waiuku Family Support, 56 Queen Street, Waiuku, prior to December 10 to allow the team time to sort, wrap and distribute the gifts to needy local families. “Your generosity can make all the difference,” a spokesperson said.

Hourly weekend trains announced Auckland Transport yesterday announced a makeover to train services from December 8 which includes hourly trains to Pukekohe on weekends. Train timetables are being updated following the introduction of electric trains on the Eastern and Onehunga Lines. Auckland Transport’s Group Manager Public Transport, Mark Lambert says “We are pleased to be able to give our customers more choice. We can now schedule a service on all lines at least every half-hour day and night, seven days a week.”

Auckland Transport will be introducing a weekend train service to Pukekohe, there will now be hourly trains from Papakura to Pukekohe on Saturday and Sunday. Through the week there will also be an additional evening service leaving Britomart at 8.58pm and arriving in Pukekohe at 10.07pm The Eastern and Southern Lines will now have six trains an hour at peak times on each line, three trains hourly during the daytime inter-peak and half-hourly services at night and on the weekend.

The Onehunga Line will have halfhourly services all day, seven days a week. On the Western Line services will remain at 15 minutes during peak and half-hourly off-peak but there will be extra trains on the weekend. Mr Lambert says these extra services will help manage the big jump in the number of people travelling by train. In the year to October there were 12.1 million rail trips, an increase of more than 17% on the same time last year. The Southern Line is next to get electric trains in early 2015

Raewyn McCormick hardly had a chance to settle in as the new owner of the Waiuku New World supermarket before she was handing out prizes to some lucky New World shoppers last week. Raewyn took over the store in October, and last week presented the winners of three in-store promotions with their prizes. Mandy Andrews purchased Lipton Iced Tea and found she had won a twoburner barbecue, while Lex Priestley’s purchases of Mortein in a recent promotion saw her win a large covered barbecue. Having just returned from a holiday and having already purchased a new barbecue recently, Lex says chances are one of her four adult daughters may end up with a new one! Robin Walter’s purchase of

products as part of the New World ‘Little Shop’ promotion turned out to be a winner as well, as she won an

News Bites Best franchises honoured The Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards were held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Auckland on 15th November 15. The highly contested Westpac Franchise System of the Year award went to Specsavers New Zealand Limited in what was their first ever entry to the Awards. The systems that Specsavers have developed, their customer focus and their successful business partnerships gave them the edge to take out this award. The Westpac Franchisee of the Year award was won by The Coffee Club, Bethlehem for the third successive year.

Smartphone rush Around 79% of all adults in New Zealand will have a smartphone by September next year according to a Horizon Research survey which founds 69% of people aged 18+ now have smartphones. Another 10.4% say they intend to get one by next September, leaving just 20.6% of the adult population without one. That means around 332,700 more using smartphones by September 2015. By that time around 2,540,000 adults will have one of the devices.

The 16-year-old employee spent nine days in hospital as a result of his serious injuries. “Serious workplace injuries are often caused because of inadequate machine guarding or machines not being used properly. Young people in particular are at risk when using machinery and it is important that health and safety systems ensure they are protected,” said WorkSafe New Zealand Chief Inspector, Keith Stewart.

All About Business - because business matters

Retail confidence high in Business as usual despite 100% fire run to Christmas trading The latest Retail Trade Statistics show that the retail sector is continuing to move forward, despite some economic challenges, with retailers looking forward to a positive Christmas trading season, according to a recent poll of retailers by Retail NZ, the organisation representing both traditional and online shops. “Today’s Retail Trade Statistics show a 1.5 per cent rise in retail spending over the last quarter. There’s lots of competition in the retail market - but today’s statistics show that trading is continuing to improve and that consumers are spending,” Retail NZ Chief Executive Mark Johnston said. “Competition from offshore retailers continues to challenge Kiwi firms and, while spend by New Zealanders on overseas websites is thought to be substantial, it is not included in the official statistics. “We’ve just completed a snapshot survey of our members which shows that 43 per cent of retailers think the last quarter has been better than the previous quarter, and 33 per cent think it’s been about the same. Just under a quarter of retailers have found business to be more challenging over the last three months. The results are similar right around the country and our poll reinforces the official Statistics New Zealand view of slow but steady increases in retail spending. “There’s good news on the horizon too. Kiwis are getting ready for Christmas, and retailers are looking forward to their busiest trading period of the year, with nearly two-thirds of them expecting a good Christmas sales period.”

Seasonal worker warning as summer approaches With summer just around the corner, Inland Revenue is reminding employers to get their tax right if taking on seasonal and casual workers. Eleanor Young, Group Manager for Customer Services at Inland Revenue said businesses shouldn’t overlook their tax obligations as they gear up to cope with the Christmas and summer demand. “People employed on a casual agreement play a vital role in the country’s economy over the holiday season and employers need to ensure they are prepared for taking on these new staff,” said Ms Young. “At this time of year, thousands of seasonal and casual workers are employed as fruit pickers, shearers or as casual workers in the entertainment and hospitality industry. “If you intend to employ seasonal or casual workers there are a few points to be

aware of when it comes to your tax obligations,” she said. Employers of seasonal or casual workers need to make sure all new staff complete a Tax code declaration (IR330) form. “All new employees choose the tax code that reflects their particular circumstances,” said Ms Young “and will need to provide their IRD number. Employers must deduct the amount of tax (PAYE) that relates to each employee’s declared tax code and pay those deductions to Inland Revenue by the due date each month. “When a casual or seasonal worker starts or finishes work, the employer must show the start and/or finish date for each worker on the relevant Employer monthly schedule (IR 348). All employers should also keep employment records for all their casual and seasonal workers.

Waiuku retailer Gary Pye says he has had a great response from members of the local community helping with a clean-up after a fire was contained in his store on Saturday afternoon. The fire, in Gary Pye’s 100% Your Electric Store, is believed to have started in a light fitting, and spread into the ceiling. Gary says his staff handled the situation ideally, and he also paid tribute to the Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade, who not only arrived promptly, but also took care to extinguish the blaze without causing too much damage to the store. The following day, local residents helped out with a clean-up in the store, and by Monday it was business as usual, although Gary says with a laugh that people should keep an eye out just in case there is a fire sale on some items in the next few days!

From spectator to racer in a heartbeat Watch it! Race it!

Some lucky person could go to watch the action at the Waiuku Dirt Track in January and suddenly find themselves on the starting grid with their own fully-built race car, complete with race gear and membership to the club. That prospect is up for grabs as the Dirt Track Club launches its fund raising raffle, with the prize being a readyto-race V6 Commodore and a season’s membership. Dirt Track enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to this season, with the Waikato Council having granted the club the opportunity to have up to ten race days, (up from six) which means the club ran a practice round last weekend and is set to open its season with a full programme of racing on Sunday, November 30. “It’s a great family club, and it’s great entertainment for the crowds as well, with up to 55 races scheduled per day,” committee member Nick Speedy says. The club has a membership of

around 120, making it one of the bigger clubs in the region, and the family atmosphere is reflected in the race schedule with events for men, women

and juniors from 13 years of age. 12-year-olds can ride as passengers during races, and Nick says it’s possible to put together a racing saloon car for around $2000, with about half of that cost in building the roll cage and investing in safety equipment. Annual membership is just $60, and Nick says that’s great value for money for a family sport. However, someone may get the chance to go racing during this season for just $15, as that’s the ticket price for the raffle, which has just 200 tickets. “Kenny Bracken of Waiuku Radiators and Mufflers has installed a roll cage in the raffle Commodore, while Votex Racewear has sponsored a full race kit of boots, balaclava, overalls and gloves for the winner,” Nick says. The raffle will be drawn during the driver briefing for the club’s raceday on January 11, so as the start flag drops on racing on that Sunday, it could turn into a very exciting New Year for someone.

Counties Power keeps pace with local growth The Franklin region is developing at a rapid pace as more businesses and families move to the local region to enjoy a great lifestyle close to two of New Zealand’s largest cities. Franklin’s own electricity lines provider, Counties Power, has responded with a range of new network construction projects to meet this rise in demand. Counties Power has built 8km of new high voltage 110 kV line between Pukekohe and Tuakau since June. The project is part of an initiative

to cater for new housing developments and commercial growth in the Tuakau area and to support the new dairy factory being constructed in Pokeno. The overall project involves building a new power line between Pukekohe and Bollard Road, and replacing lower capacity lines from Bollard Road to a new, high capacity sub-station developed at Tuakau. While some crews are building the lines, others are working on the substations at both ends.

Night owls who are travelling between Pukekohe and Tuakau last week may have seen one of the 40 Tonne transformers from the Pukekohe substation making its way by truck to the new Tuakau substation. A new transformer is being shipped from the manufacturer to take its place in Pukekohe and is due to arrive later in the month. The Pukekohe-Tuakau line is part of a larger scale upgrade project. In January poles and insulators are being replaced

around Tuakau to increase the capacity of the local network. The high voltage construction team will be working on this project until midwinter next year, building a second 110kV link to the Tuakau substation for extra reliability. The initiative is part of Counties Power’s plans to provide for local housing growth, the needs of the new Yashili Dairy plant and other exciting commercial developments planned for the region.

The Reserve Bank’s announcement last week that Loan to Value (LVR) restrictions will not be lifted is hard news for provincial New Zealand, where written sales and prices continue to dip or remain stagnant, says the CEO of Harcourts. CEO Hayden Duncan says the restrictions have not had a large effect on the property market in Auckland and Christchurch, where they

were designed to. Instead first home buyers outside of these two cities have been most affected. In Auckland and Christchurch there has been a clear recovery from the winter lull that is traditional in real estate, with written sales up and average prices continuing to increase. “The Auckland and Christchurch markets are driven by low supply and

high demand. LVR restrictions have not had an effect on prices, which continue to rise, because demand is growing and construction is not keeping up with it. “Instead our provincial markets, which were never overheated, have been badly affected and average Kiwis trying to break into the property market have been prevented from doing so,” Mr Duncan says.

Whakaupoko Landcare, with a $25,000 donation from Auckland Council, has continued its environmental work, a meeting was told last week. Native trees have been purchased from Te Whangai trust and six properties (including a community planting at St Brides church) now have riparian plantings along sections of the Mauku stream. The group is planning to support more landowners to continue this project in the coming years and will look into becoming part of the ‘Million Miles of Streams’ initiative. The group is also looking at ways to raise the profile of the Whangamaire walkway at Patumahoe and enlist more people to help with ongoing maintenance. The walkway is a great asset to the community and, botanically, a very valuable local resource. Auckland Council has been very supportive of the group and the meeting was also attended by Alan Cole (Local Board member) and Michael Ngatai (AC Biosecurity). The group says new members are always welcome and can become involved in a range of activities such as Bird counts; animal and weed pest control; planting/weeding days as well as field days, walks and other social activities. A coming event is a working bee to weed the recently planted St Brides Mauku Stream riparian planting - all are invited to bring gloves and a spade to St Brides Church Findlay Road on Saturday December 6 from 8.3oam. Another venture is the creation of the ‘Patumahoe Village Planters’, a social group of people interested in learning and sharing knowledge about plants, gardening and related subjects. The group meets at 10am the first Wednesday of each month at St Brides’ Ivy Hogwood centre. “This is a very casual, fun, morning tea with a plant theme or a speaker - to date we have had a floral art demonstration /propagation workshop/ plant Identification session as well as general discussions. Anyone is welcome to come along,” says one of the organisers. For more information, contact Fiona on 2358301.

The Labour Party’s Housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says a Commerce Commission inquiry is needed in anti-competitive practices that are driving up the cost of building materials. “Competition in the building materials market is essential to lowering building costs, according to the Productivity Commission’s analysis. “But Knauf Plasterboard has said it is reviewing its position in New Zealand after posting a loss in its first nine months after struggling to break through the building materials monopoly,” he says. “Fletcher’s subsidiary Winstone Wallboard has 94 per cent of the market. “That’s bad for the building industry, for home buyers struggling to afford a new house and the rest of the property market. “Plasterboard is 41 per cent more expensive in New Zealand than Australia, meaning it would cost $12,000 for a standard house in New Zealand compared to $8000 in Australia.”

Rental prices rocket in 12 months The median weekly cost to rent a house in New Zealand has risen more than 6 per cent on a year ago, according to the first edition of the Trade Me Property Rental price Index released last week. The median weekly rent was $399, up from $375 in October 2013. Head of Trade Me Property Nigel Jeffries said the increase was underpinned by the ‘scorching’ rental market in Christchurch where median weekly rents have soared 20 per cent year-onyear to a new record high of $510 per week. A month ago the weekly rent was $465 per week and a year ago it was $425 per week.

Auckland remained ‘reasonably stable’ with a year-on-year increase in median weekly rent of 2 per cent ($460 per week) and Mr Jeffries said this modest rate of annual increase has been consistent over the past six months. The Auckland rental market is dominated by three and four-bedroom houses which saw a 5 per cent increase. “With 12,000 houses removed from the city and an influx of workers moving in for the rebuild, the rental market remains under pressure in Christchurch,” he said. The new Index measures trends in rents for all properties rented through

Trade Me Property by private landlords and property managers in October. It provides tenants, landlords and property managers with information about the rental market across the country by property size, type and region. Mr Jeffries said the rate of increase in rents across New Zealand had been steep over the past three months. “In August, September and October we’ve seen median rents all breach the six per cent mark, with September up 7.8 per cent year-on-year. Rents look to be rising faster property asking prices, which indicates things are tightening up for tenants.”

the operations model for the halls whereby the local board will be responsible for governance and strategy, while day-to-day operations will be managed by hall committees appointed by the local board. “Franklin Local Board received a strong message from our communities in the Wairoa sub-division about how they want to operate their halls – run by the community, for the community. Currently, management of halls is undertaken differently within the rural areas of Wairoa, Pukekohe and Waiuku,” says local board chair, Andrew Baker. “We’ve used a communitymanagement model across some parts of Franklin, so we know that with the right support and agreements it can work well. “Communities in rural locations take responsibility for their own local halls, giving them more flexibility and encouraging greater use

of the halls as a community resource.” Through the new model, there will be one way of operating as chosen by the community and supported by the local board. This means operations across Franklin will be consistent, transparent and efficient. “It also means all of the halls will have strong local connections – we know rural communities have a high level of ownership over their venues,” adds Mr Baker. The EOI will be used to identify those community groups with an interest in operating each hall. Each group must be an incorporated society or trust, or have the ability to become incorporated. • Auckland Council will remain the landlord, but the hall committee will manage it together with a funding agreement. The council will retain responsibility for major maintenance of the buildings.

THE POST NEWSPAPER, november 18, 2014

Concern over drugged drivers The Auckland Development Committee last Thursday received the third annual Auckland Plan progress update which tracks the progress of the plan’s actions and achievements over the past year. Although the implementation of the plan has just begun, areas that still need improvement to reach set targets include levels of alco-

hol or drug impaired driving, low home ownership levels and lower than average export growth. Auckland Development Committee Chair Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says the report is encouraging, however as expected some areas need improvement. “This report shows many positive developments and progress we should be proud

Kindy fundraiser success

Helping out at the George Street Kindergarten garage sale on Saturday morning in Waiuku were Leilani Cloete, Lisa Ryan and Helen Smithson. The event, which drew good crowds, was to raise funds for a new playground. The kindergarten is waiting on concept plans at the moment, and is hoping for further community support and grants funding to make the project a reality. The kindergarten celebrates 40 years next year.

of as a region,” she says. “We have launched the new electric train services, completed the roll-out of the AT HOP card system, and we heard last month how Aucklanders are now making 12 million train journeys each year, overtaking Wellington for the first time. “More children are enrolled in early childhood education and there is an increase in people gaining post-secondary qualifications which is really important as we strive to become the world’s most liveable city,” she adds. The report says the council can look to events like the NRL Nines, which delivered $9.35 million in GDP to Auckland, to highlight the economic strength of the city and help boost visitor numbers. “However it is not acceptable for us to still have so many people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or that the levels of homelessness are still high in Auckland,” says Ms Hulse. “These challenges cannot be solved by council alone so we must continue to work with all Aucklanders and our key partners as envisaged by the Auckland Plan. “The key is that we are aware of these challenges, and can adjust where we need to and improve our efforts in the right areas.”

‘Needless’ deaths for gambling

The recent deaths of two Melbourne Cup horses highlights the cutthroat nature of the racing industry say animal welfare advocates. Aaron Cross from the Greyhound Protection League says: “These two tragedies are sadly a predictable outcome when you combine racing activity with a hugely powerful gambling industry. Last year’s Cup also brought a needless death. “The sheer amount of money that is funneled through the TAB clouds the judgement of everyone involved, and it’s the animals who pay the deadly price for this cruel form of unnecessary entertainment. “In greyhound racing there are around 50 deaths on the track every year, and in New Zealand we love dogs. Treating them this way is completely out of step with mainstream Kiwi values, and the government needs to seriously think about phasing out greyhound racing.”

Pet accident warnings

A dog eating glue, a cat which fell into a tin of paint and a dog biting an electric hedgecutter highlight some of the risk pets face in our gardens this summer. Southern Cross Pet Insurance head Anthony McPhail says that because of their curious nature, dogs can sniff, lick and chew their way into a case of poisoning or injury in the blink of an eye. McPhail says the claims Southern Cross Pet Insurance pays out as a result of garden and garage accidents serve to highlight that when it comes to pets, owners need to be just as vigilant as parents of young children. “Commonly used fertilisers and pesticides can contain harmful chemicals that are poisonous to your pet. If you’re going to be spraying the lawn, put your dog inside – along with any of their toys and feeding bowls that may be nearby – and don’t let them out until the treated area is dry.” Even the humble compost heap can cause problems if it contains dairy or meat products, grains, nuts and legumes. McPhail also recommends storing products in chew-proof containers that are locked out of reach. “One of our customer’s had to take their dog to the vet after it had chewed through the cardboard packaging on a box of slug and snail pellets and eaten the contents.” Other claims that highlight some of the dangers lurking in the garden and garage include: •. A BBQ rack that had been sprayed with oven cleaner was put on a high shelf but one dog jumped up and knocked it down. All

four dogs had licked it so were taken to the vet to be checked for caustic burns. •. A dog that bit an electric hedge cutter when it was on the ground, requiring suturing for lacerations. •. A dog ate a tube of polyurethane adhesive glue which conformed to the shape of the dog’s stomach and turned into a mass that had to be surgically removed. •. A dog required treatment to have a fish hook removed from its groin. One of the most common conditions in the summer months is heatstroke. Dogs can’t cool as efficiently as humans, as we sweat freely through our skin while they rely on evaporation from their tongues and air cooling through their noses. This means dogs with short noses - such as boxers, pugs and bulldogs – and older dogs, dogs with heart or lung disease and overweight dogs are at higher risk. Although it’s typically dogs that end up in trouble, cats aren’t immune. One moggie fell into a can of high sheen acrylic paint and the owner ended up at the emergency vet, who sedated and shaved the cat.

Fireworks ban backed Mazda drives zoo conservation Veterinarians are supporting a petition before parliament to ban the private use of fireworks. NZVA Head of Veterinary Services Callum Irvine says it is of huge concern that every year veterinary clinics see injured and traumatised animals because of private fireworks. “Animals can suffer from horrific injuries, not just from fireworks directly, but some are so terrified that they escape from their homes or paddocks and put themselves in danger’s way.” Dr Irvine says that fireworks have been banned in Australia and other countries, and New Zealand needs to do the same.

Mazda New Zealand has joined Auckland Zoo as a principal partner, provid-

ing three vehicles for the Zoo to relocate or release animals, transport staff, and

also transport equipment for fieldwork activities. The Zoo’s Ectotherms team were the first to road-test the new alligator-themed Mazda CX9. “The CX-9 enabled us to chaperone one of our five alligators, Doris, to a Northland facility and carry out the important role of settling her in with an amorous male,” says Ectotherms team leader, Don McFarlane. Writing win for Abby

Students and residents mark Armistice Day Students from View Road Primary School, Awhitu Primary School and Waiuku College joined RSA members and local residents at an Armistice Day commemoration at the Waiuku Cenotaph at 11am last Tuesday. Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War One and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning—the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’ of 1918. The commemoration was the first official duty for next year’s Waiuku College head students Sam Yelchich and Caitlin Browne, while Awhitu School sent a delegation of its Student Council, which includes members of the school from Years One to Eight. View Road School students also laid a wreath before they remained after the commemoration to draw pictures of the cenotaph as part of their art curriculum.

View Road School’s Abby Engelbrecht is one of six winners nationwide who won in the ‘Colour Your Classroom’ writing competition. The theme she chose to write about was ‘Who is your role model?’ Abby won a bag of goodies (label maker and pens from the sponsors) as well as a pack for the class worth $250, and $750 cash for the school. The proceeds will be used to take the class to the movies in Pukekohe, McDonalds, and will also be going towards projects to beautify the school. Abby’s role model for her writing was her friend Neve Diamond-Brown, pictured above with Abby.

Golden wedding

Waiuku’s Colin and Judith Hull celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with around 30 family members at a celebration in Perth, Australia recently. The couple were married at St Andrews Anglican Church in Pukekohe on November 7, 1964, and were in Perth for the marriage of their first grandson, Luke Ryniker, to Kelly Sleep.

Horse and jockey safety under microscope as Counties Cup approaches On the eve of the 2014 Counties Cup, the racing industry is still reeling from the recent double tragedy of this years Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse. Japanese champion stayer Admire Rakti the pre-race favourite - died after suffering heart failure, while seven-year-old stallion Araldo was put down after breaking a pastern (bone in the leg) when it was spooked by a young flag bearing fan while returning to the mounting yard. Just when the annual spotlight shone brightly on one of Australasia’s most iconic sporting events, a little bit of the gloss was etched away. But can these types of incidents be avoided in future? And if not, could horse racing actually be banned? Lets all take a deep breath for minute and try to see the full picture from both sides of the railings. Firstly I would like to note that the racing industry is a big deal in this country. According to the New Zealand Racing Board, one in every 83 New Zealand residents is employed (paid or unpaid) by the New Zealand Racing Industry. Between those who are employed directly by racing (52,700) and those who attend the races (1,000,000), a significant proportion of the New Zealand population have a direct involvement. The industry that also encompasses harness racing (trots) and greyhounds, is responsible for generating more than $167

As the local racing community readies for the Counties Cup this Saturday, Tim Gregory takes a look at some of the controversy around animal deaths in the racing industry. million in export revenue for the country, with the government receiving more than $39 million from wagering taxes alone. The bottom line in all of the number crunching is that racing is worth a lot to Kiwis and is here to stay. Our Australian cousins also enjoy a very similar trend-line but on an even bigger size and scope. While statistics convey the image of a bright and vibrant industry that entertains millions, they can also reveal the darker side of the sport. A race horse dies on average every 2.9 days on Australian race tracks alone. Only a day after the Melbourne Cup, a horse called ‘Rich Love’ succumbed to an almost identical fate to Admire Rakti at an event in Grafton, New South Wales. Public opinion tends to flare up during the spring carnival period, with some quarters even re-igniting their extreme view of banning horse racing altogether. The most notable of these groups is the non-profit organisation called the ‘Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses’. A group that has famously lobbied against steeplechase racing on the grounds of it being in-humane. “We are an animal welfare organisation, and we are calling for chang-

es in the industry” says spokesman Ward Young. Mr Young believes that one of the key factors that contribute to horses breaking down on the race track is the use of the whip. “All the whip serves to do is push the animals beyond their physical capabilities,” said Ward “The simple fact is if the whip didn’t hurt the horse it wouldn’t be used” To the sports’ credit, they are now imposing more severe penalties for jockeys who excessively use the whip. Pre-eminent racing expert Richard Freedman believes groups such as the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses are “Professional outragers. Moving from one outrage to another in a bid to get attention.” Freedman speaking on Triple M radio in Sydney also puts balance into the Melbourne Cup situation: “The Araldo incident was very unfortunate, where a horse kicks out and fractures a bone. That could happen anywhere, even the wild. “With Admire Rakti, he was a high performance athlete revving his motor at the highest revs possible and unfortunately his heart gave up. These things can happen. There are very careful stats kept that show this only happens to 0.07 percent of race horses.”

As a former trainer and winner of the Melbourne Cup, Freedman also believes that thoroughbred race horses are very well looked after, and that we should be educated before forming our own perception of the industry and its treatment of the animals. Another dark cloud that has been suspended above the sport in 2014 is the ongoing safety of jockeys. Earlier this year Apprentice jockey Caitlin Forrest, 19, was killed after a fall at Murray Bridge race course near Adelaide, the second jockey to die in the space of a week in Australia preceding Carly-Mae Pye, 26, who died from injuries sustained when the horse she was riding broke its front legs during a training run at Rockhampton, throwing her head-first into the track. The sports administrators remain steadfast that these are freak accidents and continue to roll out new safety initiatives, such as introducing plastic railings in the hope it will help minimise the risk of competitors sustaining any further catastrophic injuries. So, as thousands of Franklin residents prepare their suits and fascinators for this Saturdays Counties Cup, it seems the party will continue to be as big as ever. At the end of the day racing is as ingrained into Kiwi culture as rugby and beer. Style, Speed and Grace are all great hallmarks of a sport that we love. But for both equine and human competitors alike, safety must remain at the peak of the agenda.

Budding young Calendula pizza businessman winner named Visitors to the Post Newpaper over the past few weeks will have seen local teenager Tayler Newall with his stall of home-grown produce and baking. Tayler has been raising funds for a trip to Australia in the new year, and has been raiding the family’s local lifestyle garden for fresh produce and free-range eggs. He’s also been up in the evenings baking cookies, making his own lemon honey and potting up seedlings for local gardeners. He says the response from the community has been great, and adds that he’s learned a lot about business, especially that it helps to have a Mum to provide transport and logistics!

We had a great response to our competition from last week for a Calendula Cafe voucher to celebrate the launch of a new pizza oven at the popular cafe. The correct answer to the competition was ‘A wood-fired pizza oven’, and drawn from all correct entries was Gemma McKay.

Researcher talks gender issues with Indian women Indian women born in New Zealand can face conflicting values when it comes to defining gender roles and establishing romantic relationships. The issue is being studied by University of Waikato masters student Ishta Singh. She says it can be difficult for young Indian women to align the values and culture of their families with the ideas they’ve picked up living in a more liberal New Zealand environment. For her study Ishta would like to talk to New Zealand-born Indian women aged between 18 and 25 through a series of focus groups to find out how they deal with issues such as arranged marriages and living in patriarchal relationships. She says her research may clarify why some women stay in abusive relationships. Ishta’s supervisor, Dr Neville Robertson from the university’s School of Psychology, says the research may also assist different service providers better deal with situations of family and culture conflict. THE POST NEWSPAPER, november 18, 2014

Something to think about While we accountants seem locked into thinking the end of a year comes at 31 March and a new year starts on 1 April, the rest of the world knows the year really ends on 31 December and starts on 1 January. That is why they have all the celebrations and fireworks then. Maybe we accountants just don’t get out that much! Christmas decorations are up around town, plans are afoot for summer holidays and plotting is underway to see if you can get away with wearing jandals to all those family functions without ending up in the dog house. It is also time to start thinking about what you are going to do next year that will be different from this year. There will be the regular ones that will be lost by mid January – exercising more and losing weight etc. But what about your business? What plans do you have for that? If a form of insanity is defined as doing the same things while expecting a different result, we are all a bit insane at times. There are a hundred and one sayings in this realm: Failure to plan is planning to fail; or don’t work so much in your business you fail to work on your business. We in the business consulting area have hundreds of these. But what do your really need? How do you really go about planning and making changes? The best place to start is to look at where you are now. What is going really well and then, what could be improved? Again using the cliché (but this one is actually quite useful) list down your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Be honest – after all nobody has to read it but you! Once you have done this, a picture will start to emerge as to where you are and where you need to head. Even if you have done this process before, do it again and refresh it. There are no right answers, only your answers. Once you have your plan then list down your tasks. Don’t make the list so long you can never finish it – be realistic. Order your tasks from most important to lesser important. If you are going to need extra resources to achieve that task, plan how that is going to be achieved. Then put atime frame beside each one. If you have a diary, write those deadlines into your diary. If you find you are really having some trouble getting started with this, then give us a call at Chatfield & Co Limited and we can help get you on your way.

next month / Christmas is coming ...
