Sacrifice recalled at Glenbrook

Above:Waiuku RSA President Doug McNally pays his respects after laying a wreath on the memorial steam train Passchendaele at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway on Monday. A special ceremony, attended by representatives from New Zealand Rail, the New Zealand Defence Force, RSA members and members of the Passchendaele Society marked the arrival of the steam engine, named after one of the bloodiest battles of World War One. A flypast performed by historic warplanes followed the ceremony, the sounding of the Last Post and the reading of The Ode. In 1925 the then-Minister of Railways, Gordon Coates, agreed to a proposal to name a steam locomotive ‘in memory of those members of the New Zealand Railways who fell in the Great War’. More than 5000 railwaymen served overseas between 1914 and 1918 (out of a total workforce of 14,000), and 450 were killed. Having a couple of days off over Labour Weekend we decided to head away on a couple of day trips to see the sights. Naturally, this meant taking out a second mortgage to put gas in the car, but I managed to put my usual grumpiness to one side, looking forward to the trip. As usual, the morning of the first excursion saw total chaos at home, as we debated whether we needed to take the cat to the vet (it had been attacked by a rival overnight), whether to take the dog with us, (we were puppy sitting for friends overseas), and whether we needed a map, (I’m a bloke, we don’t use them.) The upshot was we forgot to get gas in Waiuku and ended up in the Hauraki Plains with a fuel light flashing. We popped into the first station, which turned out to be a pre-pay thing that took me 15 minutes of button-pushing to find out it couldn’t read my card. The next station looked more promising, in that it had actual humans behind the counter, so we decided to get oil as well. This turned out to be a mistake. The man and woman at the counter were obviously recent arrivals to New Zealand, and after some length of time trying to explain that I wanted to know how much a litre of oil would be, they had a lengthy conversation in a language I couldn’t understand, before saying the manager was away, but they could phone him. I was halfway through enquiring whether they perhaps sold peacocks or cut-glass chandeliers in their shop as clearly they felt oil was something strange to have in a garage when the House Boss dragged me out. Maybe I’m being old fashioned, but WHY can’t we have petrol stations where actual people serve you what you want, when you want it?

Teenagers setting a good example After the dreadful stabbing last weekend, there is still hope for some of our Waiuku teenagers. On the Saturday night my husband and I hosted a party for our sons 18th birthday. There was at least 50 teenagers, drinking, socialising, danc-

Waiuku Probus members were pleased to welcome Simon Palmer and his wife Jane to their meeting this month. Simon gave a very informative talk about the Police Force, as well as explaining how many thefts can be avoided by just being sensible and not putting temptation in the way of potential thieves. Locking sheds, barns and front doors, not leaving items on the car seat and by being aware at all times do deter many would be thieves. “Although Simon is doing so well at his new station it is heart-warming that he still takes such an interest in Waiuku. Thank you Simon and Jane for spending the morning with us sharing all this “sensible” advice,” one of the members said.

quirement mostly does not apply. The group hope that work can commence before Christmas. This area is so big, that it is expected to take many years to clear. As before, Mudlarks will supply all labour for cutting, bundling, and transporting to a landing. However, the Mudlarks understand that Council are stopping, or seriously reducing their funding for operating costs, so monies for other expenses like chipping, will have to be sourced from elsewhere. At this stage Mudlarks have cleared about 8ha, which includes the East side of Tamakae Estuary down to end of View Rd, and on the West side, past the Mudlarks bridge and beyond Riverside drive. When consented, the current intention is to carry mangrove clearing on (Estuary) West side, all the way to Sandspit. This will then clear the way for the mooted boardwalk section of Tamakae walkway, completing footpath access from behind the Fire Station

to Sandspit reserve. This will make a loop walk possible, and have benefits for local folks’ access to town, and for tourism. The next area cleared would probably be the East side, making the Tamakae Estuary completely clear. A major factor in such a complete removal will be no seeding, seriously reducing the regrowth. The Mudlarks are enthusiastic about the aesthetic, recreational, and tourism benefits of their work. They are a group of mostly retired guys, and work generally is for a morning, with a tea break with time for banter and a chat. • Mudlarks welcome help from folk interested in giving a morning’s work now and again, when tide and weather are right. Interested people should contact Ian Scobie 235 2246 or Dave Gribble 235 8867. Or if you are able to be a Mudlarks’ supporter, your subscription of $10 will be welcomed. The Waiuku Mudlarks, the volunteer group who have cleared hundreds of tonnes of mangroves from the Waiuku Estuary, are delighted to have heard from Auckland Council that Council will procure a consent to continue with mangrove clearing in Waiuku Estuary. However, that good news also comes with news that the volunteers may need to find alternative sources of funding to pay for their operational costs and mulching of the cut mangroves. The Mudlarks had halted virtually all clearance work after consenting issues meant further work required them to leave a 10m ‘buffer zone’ of mangroves around clearing areas, and were left unable to proceed with new areas in the absence of consents. The Mudlarks say the good news with the latest consent proposal is that it looks likely to cover a huge amount of shoreline. It will be all the way to The Needles, with the exception of three smallish areas. The ten-metre buffer zone re-

160 years Waiuku centre hailed as celebrated the future of recycling

Two days of activities on the weekend of November 15 and 16 will mark 160 years of settlement in the Awhitu region. At 11am on the Saturday is a gathering at the Awhitu Regional Park carpark before a drive to the start of a walk through the ‘Valley of the Settlers’ kauri plantation. People who wish to attend are asked to take along a hat, drinks, possibly a folding chair or similar, and a picnic for the picnic lunch. A vehicle will be available to carry gear to the viewing point. In case of inclement weather, contact Wayne Aspin (235 1074) or Jock Massey, (235 1152). The second day of the celebrations will start with an 11am service at the Awhitu Central Church, which will be followed by the unveiling of two memorial plaques marking the contribution of local people to the area.

Local residents in and near Waiuku will have the chance to experience the future when a new community recycling centre opens next month. The Waiuku Community Recycling Centre will open on 7 November - the first facility of a planned Resource Recovery Network that will provide recycling hubs in communities across Auckland, to significantly reduce waste to landfill. Auckland Council’s Regional Strategy and Policy Committee chair Councillor George Wood says the centre is an important milestone to implement the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP). “The Resource Recovery Network is a core project for the WMMP, and opening our first centre in Waiuku is an exciting step forward. Over time, the network will grow and support the aspirational goal of zero waste by 2040, and deliver benefits to local communities.” The new centre will open

at the site currently known as the Waiuku Transfer Station, at 5 Hosking Place. Franklin Local Board chair Andy Baker says Waiuku residents can help shape the future of community recycling on behalf of the region. “Our community has a chance to become leaders and innovators of resource recovery. I hope local people embrace this innovative service and philosophy of using waste as a resource.” Visitors to the site can still dispose of their waste as they do currently. The new operators, Waiuku Zero Waste Trust, will also develop new services that will focus on reusing materials. The Trust is a joint venture between local community group the Waiuku and District Community Workshop Trust and nationally recognised recyclers, Xtreme Zero Waste, which runs a similar model for community recycling in Raglan. The group has a contract with Auckland Council to operate the centre for five years.

Legal high sales to be debated Local residents are being urged to have their say on where psychoactive substances, commonly known as legal highs, can be sold in the region. The council’s Local Approved Product Policy consultation, which will decide where the products can be sold, opens today (Tuesday October 28) and proposes: Licenses to sell legal psychoactive substances in all of Auckland (apart from the city centre) will not be granted in: • areas of high deprivation • neighbourhood centres • within 500m of a school teaching students year seven and above • within 200m of a school teaching students between years one and six inclusive • within 500m of a mental health or addiction treatment centre • within 500m of an existing psychoactive substances retail licence • areas identified as restricted areas. Councillor George Wood, chairperson of the Regional Strategy and Policy Committee says the council is working hard to ensure the proper, responsible balance is found. “We have done extensive work on this draft policy, to try and minimise the risks to those most vulnerable in our community,” he says. “Our vision, to become the world’s most liveable

city, will be achieved in part through Auckland being a safe and healthy city. These proposed measures will help ensure that is the case. “By setting up our policy on the sale of the products before they are licensed by government, we will be prepared for when they are once again legal to sell. “And while we can’t stop their sale altogether, the council is being as responsi-

ble as possible by proposing these restrictions of sale. “So we want as many people as possible to have their say on the policy, as the sale of these products has the potential to affect everyone in Auckland. Making your views heard now on this issue is absolutely vital.” The consultation is open from 28 October-28 November and can be completed via shapeauckland.co.nz.

College says ERO report a ‘highlight’ Waiuku College principal Tom Van Der Laan says the school is very happy with the Education Review Office report released last week which was very positive about the school, particularly in the ‘increasingly strong learning culture’ displayed. Referring to it as an ‘amazing’ report, Tom Van Der Laan said the report endorsed the positive culture, attitude and achievement of Waiuku College, its staff, students and Board of Trustees. The report said the school has a positive culture, based on the college’s values of respect, pride and safety, and noted students are ‘friendly, secure in their environment, and positive about their learning”. The report also said a steady improvement in the number of students continuing to Year 13 reflects the school’s increasingly strong learning culture. “National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results across the school at Levels 1, 2 and 3 continue to improve. The proportion of students leaving school with NCEA Level 2 or better and the numbers of merit and excellence endorsements in 2013 are increasing. The significant improvement in the percentage of school leavers with NCEA Level 2 reflects teachers’ focus on teaching strategies that support students to be successful,” the report stated. Figures supplied by the College show there has been a major improvement in the percentage of school leavers with Level 2 or above in the past five years. In 2008, that figure was just 55.6%, but last year went to 78.7%. This figure is also well above both the Franklin average of 69.9% and the New Zealand target of 72.7% “The school’s increasingly broad curriculum is very effective in engaging students in learning. It provides a range of options for Years 9 and 10 students, and relevant academic and vocational programmes at senior level,” the report went on to say. “High expectations for learning are evident across the school. Students respect and appreciate teachers’ skills and subject knowledge. Coordinated, creative and strategic approach-

Principal Tom Van Der Laan with students Tayla Thornton and Lucas Smith who won the Rewards Assembly Prizes to have lunch with the Principal at Agave Restaurant recently. es to e-learning, digital competencies and modern learning environments are supporting students and preparing them for future learning. Teachers are increasingly using digital technologies as effective teaching and learning tools.” Although delighted with the report, Tom Van Der Laan says the school is not resting on its laurels: “We are continually seeking ways to improve as a learning institution. As this year draws to a close I believe that we, as a school, are on the cusp of surpassing within three years, our five-year goal to achieve NCEA pass rates of over 80% at all levels. 2013 NCEA rates for Levels 1,2 and 3 were 81%, 90% and 74%. Indications are that all Levels will be above 80% for 2014 and it looks like some will surpass 90%. This is a great testament to both the ability and efforts of our outstanding teachers, but also of course to the hard work and application of our fantastic students.”

Job Ploughing

Let us for a little bit of fun, explore the landholdings of Job, and his potential expansive empire. His first entry of the size of his empire is noted in Job 1:1-3 “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.”

From my understanding, camels were like “Linehaul Trucking.” This was used for import export and trade, yoke of oxen were in today’s terms plain old tractors. And this is where we want to focus our attention upon today. Job had in his shed some 500 tractors to do his farm work. Now Wikipedia – “oxgang”, tells us that a yoke of oxen can plough about 30 acres per season, so 500 will plough 15,000 acres or some 60 square kilometres. Now taking that he was a good cropper, he actually used all tractors/yoke of oxen, and that got about normal yields, he sowed about 600 ton of seed and harvested about 5 ton per acre or about 75,000 ton of wheat. Now if he sold the whole lot at a medium today’s price, his bank balance jumps up by some meagre $26 million, give or take a few million for good or so so harvests, or prices rise or fall. Now this is at his starting point, so now we move to his later days which are even more bountiful, and have fun with that.

Job 42:12-13 “So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. He had also seven sons and three daughters.” From this we find that Job has doubled his empire and now if we play our fun and guess work, this is what we get. Now a thousand yoke of oxen will plough some 30,000 acres per season, or some 120 square kilometres and in an average season his bank balance jumps a meagre $52 million. We have not added to his income what the Camel Trains brought in or what the She Asses were doing, what wool clip he got from the sheep or what he garnered from the stock sales of excess animals from his breeding systems, we actually have a huge corporation sketched out here for us. From this we can guess that the whole economy of the area was very much reliant of Job being productive, so when Job lost all his wealth in a single moment, there were many many households and connected industries shut down. The Flour Mill had no grain, the weavers had no yarn as there was no wool for the spinners, shearers and shepherds, stockman and connected industries came to a sudden stop. The Import Export trade stopped as there was no cash to buy and no produce for them to move to another location. This is a total community disaster and all overnight, the areas whole economy had just disappeared.

Question; if you or I were Job, and had that

considerable income at our disposal each year, would we be an outstanding Christian and community spirited as Job. Pretty much everyone worked directly or indirectly for Job. Far flung cities and economies were all directly connected to Job for wool, meat, grain, herbs and spices, silks and Jewels, Gold, Silver and so much more that came back and forth on those camels from their hauling produce to and from markets by Job’s Camel Trains. God has entrusted each one of us with his precious treasure, the Gospel, are we feeding

the spiritually starving about us with the Bread of Life or the Water of Salvation, or even feeding ourselves? Are we looking after the assets he has entrusted us with, maintaining them and multiplying them? What about Gods funds, are we supporting the Gospel Spreading, or just hoarding it up for Moths and Rust?

Jesus is coming back very soon to shut down this world system and installing his Empire, have you warned your friends and neighbours to give them opportunity to live in Heaven or will they look at you and chastise you with, “you knew all along, why have you not warned us and shared the Gospel with us so that we could be saved?”

“If we neglect these opportunities, the time will come when there will be spoken to us by those we have not warned, words of reproach and bitterness: “You knew of these terrible judgments that were coming. We were associated together, but you did not tell us. Why did you not warn us, that we might have escaped?” May God help us that we may not have upon our garments, because of our neglect, the blood of souls! We have a work to do in our world, a work similar to that which Christ performed. This spiritual work must precede every other interest of our lives. That which is temporal must ever be made secondary to the requirements of God. It will not profit us to put ourselves forward in this world, at the expense of our Christianity.” {RH 1907 }

a child. She was recently a semi-finalist for the Elizabeth Connell International Dramatic Soprano competition. Her musical studies include a music degree with first class honours and a post graduate degree in linguistics from the University of Waikato. A 14-voice choir, the Rushland Singers, and flutist Deirdre Neilsen will also perform in an exciting programme of classical favourites including well-known works such as ‘Over the Rainbow’ and the fiendish ‘Single Sting Variations’ by Paganini. The concert begins at 2pm at St Andrews Centre in Waiuku and the $5 cover charge includes afternoon tea and the chance to mix and mingle with the performers.

Axemen, horses and live acts at Cossie Carnival The Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club’s Carnival Week next week will include a display by the club’s Axemens Group; a group which will be having a busy time of it during November. Displaying the variety of entertainment options available at the club, Carnival Week commences on Monday November 3 with a Country Music Club show in the evening, before a special Melbourne Cup day on Tuesday. The Tuesday entertainment includes a live ‘talk show’ with local celebrities from the equine industry, and will feature VIP tables, fashions in the field, a punters club and mystery prizes. On Wednesday attention turns to the Axemen, with an indoor wood chopping demonstration, while there is live entertainment on Friday and Saturday (as well as an outdoor woodchopping show on Saturday), before a buffet finale dinner on Sunday. Contact the Waiuku Cosmpolitan Club for full details on Carnival Week. The 7.30pm indoor wood chopping is just part of a busy month for the axemen, as on November 8 they will hold an outdoor display at 12 noon and 2pm. The next weekend of November 15 and 16 will see axemen from New Zealand, Australia and Canada including past NZ and world champions competing in 10 different chopping events at the Cosmopolitan Club, from 10am each day. The club’s axemen have had some overseas success this year, competing at the Sydney Royal Easter show with a collection of wins and places. The Sydney Show is

known as the Wimbeldon of woodchopping where a lot of the top axemen compete. David, Nathan and William McDonald and Jesse Whitehead all competed for ten days at the show and gained a lot of experience. David once again showed he could compete amongst the best, placing second in the World title single saw and in the Handicap single saw. He also won the 300mm standing chop and was fourth in the 275mm underhand. He then combined with Nathan and Jesse to win the Combination event. William represented NZ

in the Under 21 test series doing the standing block in the first race then the single saw in the third race unfortunately the young Australia team was too strong and won the series 3 nil. Nathan and David also competed at Brisbane Show in August where they both gained places and Nathan won a 300mm standing event. They combined to place third in the championship double saw. William represented NZ in the Under 21 team that went to the Adelaide Show in September and was captain for the team.

Arrest after Local author pens book for migrants rash of phone thefts Police in Pukekohe have been investigating a series of incidents related to the thefts of cellphones. A 21 year old man has been arrested and charged with 11 charges of theft, 2 charges of obtaining by deception and one charge of robbery. It is believed the phones were advertised on Facebook buy/sell groups and victims travelled to Pukekohe from as far as Matamata or Whangarei to sell their phone. “If you have been contacted on Facebook by anyone wishing to purchase a cellphone off you by meeting in Pukekohe, Police would appreciate you coming forward to assist with the investigation,” says Senior Constable Malakai Tohi of Pukekohe Police. No stolen phones have been recovered, so anyone who has purchased an iPhone or Samsung S5 in the Pukekohe area which has been subsequently blocked is urged to contact police. Anyone can record IMEI or serial numbers as well as photos of your phone or any other personal property at www.snap.org.nz.

“I would just like to have a coffee with my mother,” Ellie Baker has thought many times since arriving in New Zealand. 27 years ago Ellie came to New Zealand as a traveller. She met a man here and decided to stay, just a little longer… Over the last 20 years she and her husband have brought up their four children in Mangatangi. Ellie says her immigrant life has been good, but there were times when she wished she had a book to help her through some of the tougher times she had as an immigrant especially in her early days in New Zealand. These included not having extended family around in sad and happy times and having to miss sibling weddings and celebrations or funerals in her homeland. As there was no self-help book around she started to write one. Ellie realised from talking to other immigrants that there were ways of dealing with the challenges that immigrants face. She interviewed 25 immigrant women and identified some of the core issues and solutions to them. The interviewees were delighted to share their stories and have an opportunity to voice their struggles with being an immigrant. She hopes that the book will offer immigrants ways to be more settled in the country they have chosen to live and for non-immigrants to understand that there are difficulties living away from your homeland, even though you may be happy to be in your adopted county. Ellie Baker recently launched her book in Pukekohe’s Columbus Café and over the last year she has given away tips and discussed issues faced by immigrants on her website www.migrantemotions.com. Her book is available from her website, and locally at Chapters Bookshop, King Street Pukekohe. Anyone who would like to hear her speak or ask questions about her book and life as an immigrant, can attend her talk on Wednesday November 5, 11.00am at Pukekohe Library. After the brief talk there will be an opportunity for questions and to have a book signed by her.

All About Business - because business matters

Fireworks, floats and fishnet stockings! Waiuku has a lot to look forward to in the next few months, with the NZ Steel Christmas Parade, a town clean-up and a chance to dress up with Movies in the Park, as Sharlene Druyven reports. Firstly, a huge thank you to all those that attended and supported the Waiuku Blast to the Past. Despite the terrible weather we were really happy with the more than 7000 people who attended and braved the elements to enjoy the markets, entertainment and the display. We are so grateful we have a community that make an effort to attend and support these events. A huge thank you must go out to our sponsors, Waiuku New World, WB&DA, Franklin Local Board, Waiuku Auto Electrical and of course the main sponsor of all the fireworks and the display, Bruce Allan from Top Hat Magic. The Waiuku NZ Steel Christmas Parade is happening on December 13. This is a fantastic community event that is enjoyed by thousands so please get involved and encourage your school, groups and businesses to enter a float. The theme this year is Music and Movies. Application forms are now available to be downloaded from our website www.waiukutown.co.nz, by contacting me on waiukutownmanager@gmail.com or from the Waiuku Information Centre. We are also taking stall bookings now for the market so get in quick. We are organising a town centre tidy up on November 1 through the Manukau Beautification Trust to give our lovely town a bit of a spruce up. We are looking for volunteers to clean windows,

Update from Waiuku Town Manager Sharlene Druyven scrub, garden and paint. This is a fantastic way of giving something back while instilling pride in our community. It starts at 8.30am and will all be finished by lunch time. Obviously many hands make light work so if you would like to help please call the office on 235 6231 or email me. We will finish with a sausage sizzle to thank the workers. The Waiuku Information Centre, run by some fantastic volunteers, is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 3pm. It is proving to be a very informative asset for tourists and visitors and a valuable asset for the town. Please remember to utilise the centre to advertise and publicise upcoming events. You can contact the Information Centre on 235 6201. As you will have noticed, the grip-tread on the boardwalk and all the programmed works are now completed. Although some vehicles are racing through the roundabouts at a rate of knots,

everyone seems to be getting the hang of them now. We are constantly logging service requests for broken signage, rubbish, fallen trees and dirty toilets, among other things. Please remember you can also register a service request by phoning Auckland Council on (09)301 0101. Remember to ask for a log number so if your request is not actioned you are able to follow it up with your log number. A huge thank you to the people that took the time to send in their opinion on the public transport document and the proposed bus routes for Waiuku to Pukekohe and/or Papakura. Unfortunately it has been mentioned that if we don’t get people making their feelings known now we may lose this opportunity to get public transport into Waiuku for a very long time. The Waiuku Business & Development Association has a website; www.waiukutown.co.nz and a Facebook page. We invite you to go onto these sites, have a look and utilise them for advertising events and keeping informed on issues in our community. In closing I would like to advise that we have been given the opportunity from the Franklin Local Board to have another Movies in the Park evening next year on January 16. The movie that has been allocated to us is the Rocky Horror Picture Show. This is a great opportunity for all you guys and girls out there to pull out those fishnet stockings that have been collecting cobwebs in that bottom draw. We will have more details to follow.

Maori success Maori-operated small businesses have outperformed the SME average over the last year, although operators are less confident of growth in 2015 according to a nationwide survey. The latest MYOB Business Monitor survey of over 1,000 business owners and operators saw 43% of Maori-operated reporting improved growth in the year to August 2014 – above the average SME growth level of 39%. Around 5% of the businesses included in the research were owned or operated by Maori. Despite doing well in 2014, Maori SME operators are more cautious in their outlook for 2015. Just 27% believe economic conditions will improve in the next 12 months (compared to an average of 35%).

Ever wondered why that morning coffee tastes really great, why you just have to have it and why you feel really great getting it? A lot may have to do with the service and the feel-good smile. Of course in this case a really good flat white does also help! Doing business locally is really rewarding when we are able to build relationships with local business owner’s and staff. Families celebrate 150 years in the region Approximately 100 descendants of the families who arrived in New Zealand on October 14, 1864, aboard the ship Steinwaerder attended a reunion at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club earlier this month. The original families mainly originated from Ireland, and after spending four years in Capetown, they took the opportunity to move to New Zealand when work dried up in the Cape, settling in Whiriwhiri after an arduous sea journey. These immigrants were allocated five-acre allotments as per the Cape’s rules. Upon arriving in Waiuku, the men set to work to build the road to Whiriwhiri with picks and shovels, also assembling timber for bridges over creeks. It took until February 2nd 1865, before some Steinwaerder passengers were finally shown to their allotments. Whiriwhiri, an old Maori clearing with a Ngati Te Ata pa next door, was not a bad place to be. The soil was good, watered by reliable streams and plenty of timber at hand. These settlers were given a week on full rations in which to build themselves a raupo whare. A weather-

It was many years before the families who stayed were able to build better homes and pay off their debts, but some of them managed to buy out neighbouring properties, increasing their acreage, and conditions began to improve. Waikato Council meets with Onewhero, Tuakau residents

Waikato District Council is encouraging local residents to attend a meeting and hear what’s planned for their communities in the next 10 years. Early next month, council staff and representatives will attend a meeting in Glen Murray to outline plans for the area over the decade, and to seek views. The Onewhero/Tuakau meeting, one of several through the region, will be held on Monday, November 3, from 6.45pm at the Glen Murray Community Hall. Council is currently developing its Long Term Plan 2015-25 which highlights key business projects for Waikato district and identifies items which could affect those projects. Chief Executive Gavin Ion

says over recent months, staff and community representatives have given their feedback on issues and opportunities which could affect the sustainability of their district and prepare chapters for their 10 year story. “We’ve taken the opportunity to engage with various community partners on a number of topics and we’re keen to continue that activity by joining the local community committee at their monthly meeting. Residents are encouraged to attend so they hear a consistent message from both Council staff and their elected representatives. “In November we’re coming to your community to share what we feel are key issues for the district’s fu-

ture and how they could affect your community. This is an opportunity for you to come along, learn about opportunities in your community and help us decide what should be in the next chapter of our story, the Long Term Plan 2015-25. “We’ve identified three key areas we need to focus on over the next 10 years; managing growth including economic development, affordability and community engagement.” “This means ensuring we have the right infrastructure in place to support economic development or just making sure we have enough money to pay the bills. We now need the community to confirm whether or not we’re on the right track.” Mr Ion says it’s important

T S D JU NE E P O

for everyone to be part of the conversation. “Regardless of the role you play you can help our district head in the right direction for the next 10 years.”

Local Board wants UAGC raised The Franklin Local Board’s view that the Uniform Annual General Charge portion of rates should be raised to its maximum level to even out rates increases has been supported by the Employers and Manufacturers Association. At its meeting earlier this month, the Local Board passed a resolution recommending that the UAGC is set at a higher level than currently, and that the Long Term Plan consultation material includes options for increasing the UAGC from the current level to the maximum permissible. The UAGC, currently set at $373, is a base amount charged on all properties re-

gardless of a property’s location or valuation. The Council was advised the average valuation increase on all properties was 29 per cent. The Council will receive no windfall from the change in valuations, with individual ratepayers paying more, or less, depending on how their property compares with the 29 per cent overall valuation increase. However the Employers and manufacturer’s Association says business rates are treated unfairly and an increase in the UAGC and a faster reduction in the business differential is required. “Auckland Council should expedite an urgent increase

in the UAGC,” said Kim Campbell, EMA’s chief executive. “This would greatly assist ‘Council distribute rates fairly based on the capital value of each property,’ which Councilor Penny Webster says is the Council’s objective. “The UAGC should be doubled to its legal maximum of about $750 over three years, to 30 per cent of the total rates bill, rather than tempt the Council to continue to rate business unfairly. “Rates would not go up as a result of doing this, but it would have the important effect of flattening out the rating structure.

Dairy farmers looking to grow their family business will soon have access to a new source of funding, with the launch of an innovative new investment vehicle, the NZ Dairy Farming Trusts. The Trusts – a joint venture between New Zealand farm investment company MyFarm Limited and German alternative-fund manager Aquila Capital – is seeking to raise up to $100 million from international and domestic wholesale investors. The fund plans to lend money at interest rates tied to milk and land prices, providing dairy farmers with alternatives to taking on equity partners. ACFNZ and MyFarm Ltd, Executive Director, Andrew Watters says during the life cycle

of any family farm there are several periods where additional capital may be required unexpectedly. “These loans could help young sharemilkers with limited levels of capital get into their first farm through to established farmers faced with the once in a life time opportunity to buy their neighbour’s farm, expand production, invest in productivity improvements or measures to improve their environmental compliance. “We know also that the average age of farmers is now 60 – these loans may be an important tool to assist with family succession,” says Watters. Loans will be structured as a second mortgage behind a conventional first mortgage from any trading bank.

Osborne’s Open Home: Sun 1.00 – 1.30pm 4 Noble St

New bylaw spells the end of the home fireplace A draft new bylaw adopted by Auckland Council last week looks likely to spell the end of the traditional open fire in Auckland homes. The bylaw proposes that by May next year anyone selling a property in the Auckland Urban area must permanently block the fireplace or remove it before selling a property, and must also remove or replace any woodburner made prior to 2005. Coal is banned from open fires as of May next year under the proposal. Although the draft bylaw applies only to the Auckland Urban area at this stage (referred to as the Urban Airshed), planning documents show Pukekohe and Waiuku town centres have been designated as ‘Rural Town Airsheds’, which suggest similar measures will be coming for those areas. Auckland Council says the proposed bylaw has been recommended as a way of meeting national air quality standards, as required by the Government. In winter, 75 percent of Auckland’s air pollution is due to fine particulate emissions (PM10) from open fires and old, non-compliant wood burners. The inhaling of fine particles - which can lodge in the lungs - has raised the level of respiratory illness in the region, a surprise to many who thought that vehicles or industry pollution was to

blame. The proposed Air Quality Bylaw will focus on the management of indoor fires to reduce the emissions of these fine particles, Council says. The bylaw proposes a phased in approach to allow time for owners of open fires and older wood burners to plan and consider alternative types of heating. For most people this will mean several more winters of an open fire. Auckland Council is proposing the following timeline: Air Quality Bylaw in effect – phase 1 (1 May 2015) • Point of Sale comes into effect • Ban burning of coal in open fires, clean wood only in urban areas Phase 2 (1 October 2018) • Ban on open fires comes into effect (approx 17,000 fires) • Pre 2005 wood burners to be removed/replaced by this date (64,000) The ‘Point of Sale’ rule imposes an obligation on any vendor selling a property containing a non-compliant indoor fire to remove or replace it at the point of sale. The standard sale and purchase agreement includes a vendor warranty that he/she has notified the purchaser of any outstanding requirements that were notified by the local authority. • Old Wood Burners - The owner of

an old wood burner must replace or remove it before transferring ownership of the property. • Open Fires - The owner of an open fire must permanently block the fireplace or remove it before transferring ownership of the property. There is to be a prohibition on the use of open fires in the urban airshed after 2018. The council can issue a notice to an owner of an operational open fire requiring it to be permanently blocked or removed after 1 October 2018. There is also to be a prohibition on the use of old wood burners in the urban airshed after 1 October 2018. The council can issue a notice to require removal of the old wood burner after this time. New and existing wood burners installed from 2005 onwards that meet the emission and efficiency standards will still be able to be used after the bylaw comes into effect. Installation of any new indoor home heating fire will require a building consent. Calls for public submissions on the bylaw will begin on 10 November. Once the submission period closes in December, a hearings process will commence which allows an opportunity for submitters to speak about their submission to Councillors. This is expected to be in early 2015. Waiuku

Schools’ art show starts this week

Special moment

The Waiuku Schools’ Year Seven/Eight Art Exhibition has its Official Opening this evening (Tuesday) from 7:30pm at the View Road School Hall, with hundreds of artworks on display. All are welcome to the opening and a gold coin donation is requested. After the opening, the exhibition will be open from 8.30am to 4.30pm during school days until November 6. Additionally, the exhibition will be open from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday November 1 and from 8.30am to 2pm on Friday, November 7. This exhibition is on every two years, and features work by many, many local youngsters, as View Road School’s Carmen Buckley explains: “The time and effort that goes into it by the Teacher Sue Walsham and helpers is huge. “The art work is amazing, and presented at an excellent level, and takes up the whole hall with work from all Year Seven and Eight school students around the Waiuku area.” Schools featured in the exhibition this year include Aka Aka, Awhitu, Glenbrook, Otaua, Pukeoware, Sandspit, Waipipi, Waiuku Primary and View Road School. “The children are so proud to see their art displayed, and adults are blown away by the results,” Carmen says.

David and Julie Williams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends at Castaways on Sunday 19th October.

Most fuel-efficient tyres announced The New Zealand government agency, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), has identified 186 tyres as fuel efficient as part of its new Energywise programme. Of these products, 101 are Goodyear or Dunlop branded passenger and SUV tyres. EECA has recently launched the Energywise fuel efficient tyre approval mark and website tool to inform consumers of their fuel efficient tyre options. Approved tyres must meet strict criteria for both fuel efficiency and safety in wet conditions, in line with internationally accepted test methods and standards.

Head of technical, product and aviation at Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres New Zealand, Bill Prebble said: “Traditionally, tyre treads were primarily constructed from a mixture of rubber and carbon black. Advances in technology mean that functionalised polymer tread compounds ensure high molecular bonding between rubber and silica. The introduction of this technology lowers operating temperature, improving fuel efficiency without diminishing grip.” Making the switch to Energywise-approved tyres such are said to help save a driver up to $500 over the life of a set of tyres, or up to 15

cents per litre. For Energywise fuel efficiency approval, a tyre must not only show a low rolling resistance, but also achieve a minimum wet grip performance. This combination of specifications can now provide drivers with increased confidence in a tyres’ fuelsaving performance, as well

as levels of safety. “There are a number of things people can do to reduce their fuel use and CO2 emissions. One of those is to make a more informed choice when it comes to replacing tyres, which doesn’t have to be at the expense of other performance attributes,” said Prebble.

RockStar Pukekohe Economy According to Margaret Holmes, President of the P.B.A: “Each quarter we receive statistics generated from Eftpos transactions on how we are performing compared to selected town centres and Auckland overall. For the last quarter to June we were continuing our trend of 11% growth compared to the same period 12 months ago. We have been trending this way for the last 18 months. This compares to 6.5% for Auckland as a whole and 3.9% for New Zealand. This is predominantly driven by increased transaction numbers rather than bigger transactions, so there is still plenty of room for continued improvement. Pukekohe truly is a mini Rockstar Economy!”

Saloon Saloon bar & restaurant in Pukekohe is preparing to host a trivial pursuits night with a difference on Thursday November 6. The evening will be dedicated to raising donations for the family of 24-year old Otaua father of two Adam Benefield who recently became the victim of a cowardly attack. On the morning of Saturday the 2nd of August, Mr Benefield was found unconscious on a pavement in Northern Pukekohe, having been left for dead minus his wallet and other personal possessions. Adam suffered life-threatening head injuries and remained in hospital for over nine weeks while undergoing an extensive rehabilitation program in Auckland. Currently he is back living at home but is suffering from extreme anxiety, levels of fatigue and short term memory loss. The next phase of Adam’s recovery is to continue physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy. Saloon Saloon’s event manager Tim Gregory said the staff were all affected by Adam’s incident in August. “Between our small team we have eleven children of our own so it really hits home.” “A lot of us also know Adam personally. He is such a good-natured, humble, family man which makes the situation all the more tragic.” Adam’s partner Rachel Thompson has been by his side throughout the whole journey and speaks of the challenging time when their

Product used Matrix, Nioxin, Nak, Keratin. Rachel, Adam and daughter Layla (pictured last year) young daughters Aaliyah and Layla witnessed their father in the Emergency department. “Initially it was just awful. Our oldest daughter (Layla, 2) saw Adam when he was being resuscitated and had recurring nightmares about it. We were all struggling and unsettled. It is better now but life is a lot different and it is hard to adjust too” A deluge of positive messages have given Rachel and their extended family strength to move forward in a positive way. “We have had well wishes from so many people. I had constant messages of support and people offering to help which is so awesome” Unfortunately Adam will not be in attendance at

the trivia night as he now struggles to go anywhere in public. “He is very wary of people he doesn’t know and flatly refuses to go anywhere where there are big crowds” says Rachel. “I also feel he thinks people will treat him differently now.” Mr Gregory says the trivia night is designed to be a welcome distraction for the family, while raising enough money to make a small difference to their lives. “If we can raise enough money to give the girls an experience that puts a smile on their faces we will be very happy as they have had a rough time of late.” “This is an emotional story for the locals of Franklin. We need to band together here and reach out for Adam.”

Pukekohe tramper found A 59-year-old Pukekohe man who was missing for two days in the Coromandel Ranges was found on Wednesday. The man entered into the ranges on Kauaeranga Valley Rd near Thames last Monday, and was due to return later that day. His wife had reported him missing when he had not returned by Tuesday morning. Waikato District Search and Rescue co-ordinator Sergeant Vince Ranger said the man was found near a gully in the search area at 1.20pm Wednesday. The man was not injured but was flown to Thames Hospital for a precautionary check up before being reunited with his family. Trampers in the area are warned of potential dangers of venturing alone, and are encouraged to enter the ranges in groups.

Man using walking stick to drive faces charges

Counties Manukau Police were shocked last week to find a man who was driving a car with a stick. The man, who has no use of his legs, has a condition on his licence to only use a car that has been modified to have hand-held controls. However, he was operating the foot pedals with a shortened walking stick. He also carried two passengers and only held a learner licence. Neither of his passengers are licenced to drive. “It’s very disappointing to see that in spite of all the efforts being made by Police and our community to reduce the road toll and make the roads safer, there are still people out there who have a blatant disregard for the safety of themselves and other road users,” a police spokesperson said. The man has been charged with dangerous driving and was due to appear in court.

A 5 star safety rating is ANCAP’s ultimate measure of vehicle safety protection for occupants and pedestrians. The demanding assessment includes a 64km/h frontal offset test and a 50km/h side impact test, along with a 29km/h pole test, a whiplash test simulating a 32km/h rearend crash, and a 40km/h pedestrian impact protection test. A minimum number of active safety assist technologies (SATs) are also required. The Genesis’ tally of 36.88 points includes a frontal offset score of 15.88 out of 16 and a side impact protection score of 16 out of 16. Genesis also scored 2 out of 2 in the pole test and a whiplash protection test rating of ‘good’. The vehicle uses advanced high-strength steel throughout its body structure, and has been designed from the outset to pass the world’s most demanding crash tests.

Children at risk are aged between 1 and 3 years old,” said Ann Weaver, Director of Safekids Aotearoa. “Most child driveway run overs happen in spring and summer, and sadly fathers are most often at the wheel,” Ms Weaver added. If you have the following driveway danger signs, be aware these have increased risks for children. • A long driveway • A driveway in a quiet road or

one down a cul-de-sac area. • A driveway that also provides pedestrian access to house (no separate pedestrian pathway) • A driveway leading to lots of parking – cars need to be moved around to make room or allow vehicles to leave • No physical barrier (i.e. fence) between driveway and outdoor play area. CHECK, SUPERVISE & SEPARATE • CHECK for children before getting in the car or driving off • SUPERVISE children around vehicles at all times • SEPARATE play areas from driveways to keep kids away.

Did you know that... Transmissions have evolved a lot over the last few years? Some automatic transmissions have become extremely complex, as they are now an integral part of the power train and are managed by a computer chip.

New bylaws in force Auckland boaties are being urged to ‘suit up’ with lifejackets this summer as part of new navigation safety bylaws which came into effect on Labour Weekend. Auckland Council wants people to keep safe on the water this summer and this means being aware of new rules regarding lifejackets. The long weekend was the first time the council’s new Navigation Safety Bylaw came into effect – the updated regulations focus on navigation safety for everyone on the water. “The most significant change, and the one that attracted a lot of public feedback through the public submission process, is a new rule requiring anyone on board a vessel of six metres or less to wear a lifejacket,” says the council’s Regulatory and Bylaws Committee Chairman, Calum Penrose. “Sadly, it’s all too common to hear that someone who has drowned, or nearly drowned, were not wearing a lifejacket or had one on board but didn’t have time to put it on. We want to reduce the risk of that happening.” He says as a result of consultation council has given skippers the discretion to determine when lifejackets can be removed, if the conditions are suitable. “Our message to anyone going out in a boat is to take a lifejacket and wear it – it’s not going to save your life if you don’t have it on.” Auckland Council Harbourmaster Andrew Hayton says his team will be focussing on educating people on the new rules over the summer. “Our staff will be out at boat ramps and on the water talking to people and educating them about the new rules and creating greater awareness of the need to be well prepared.” The council is also simplifying signs at boat ramps, for greater understanding and compliance. “We have developed a set of five icons and key messages that represent the important messages we want to get across to boaties – even those with limited maritime knowledge. These will be rolled out through signage and other collateral so that over time they become widely recognised.”

New events calendar released for the coming year - book your diaries!

Difficult conditions, but still some big ones to be caught! It’s been difficult fishing for most of Smudge us this last month. Our last effort got us three snapper, six gurnard and half a dozen kahawai from the harbour so it was worth the effort. Two days later though my father in law also had a quiet day in the Papakura Channel, until a snapper took his bait. On his kitchen scales it weighed 9.1kg! That was an exceptional fish but not unheard of for this time of year. Scallops are in great condition and the beds have recovered well although I’ve heard that shore based gatherers are having real problems trying to find any of legal size. Snapper fishing over the coast has been good for those venturing out to 60 metres. Fishing in closer has seen a lot of sharks. The biggest problem has been finding a weather slot that ties in with the demands of a day job! Longlines set off the beach have been doing well earlier in October when I heard of snapper up to 7kg be-

ing caught. There have been some says..... great whitebait catches in the river and many are calling this the best season in years. Counties Sport Fishing Club have our annual Snapper Slam comp on November 2. This one is for club members only and the aim is to catch a snapper closest to 2.5kg. Events such as these are a lot of fun and are really just an excuse to go fishing and mix with like minded people. Club membership forms are available at our local tackle shop for those interested in joining up. Unfortunately we are still waiting for repairs to the Te Toro pontoons and on behalf of the club I ask all those using the boat ramp to exercise care and consideration to others when using the facility. We are doing everything we can to get this matter resolved. In the meantime, stay safe on the water and enjoy the fishing!

Local Bowling Club results

The Waiuku Golf Club recently held its Mens Club Championships, with the winner in the senior section being John Ferregel, (pictured above at right with runner up Jonathan Morley). The Intermediate A section was won by Leon Robbie over Brent Dawson. While the Intermediate B winner was Travis Miles who defeated Luke Dillon in the final. The Junior winner was Wayne Nepia, and runner-up was Cam Fleming.

Buckland Bowls: The Mens’ and Ladies’ Singles Championships were decided over the week-end of 18th and 19th October in weather that was fine and warm prior to rain and a biting wind. In the Ladies Division, Diane Main prevailed over Sue Walsham in the final. A few extra entries in the Mens’ Division meant that the final was not held until Sunday afternoon and was between Jim Ballard and Ova Saloma, the former being the first to the required 21 points for the title. On 22nd October, an Any Combination Triples tournament was held sponsored by Phil Beston, of Barfoot & Thomson, Malcolm Wrigley Insurance Services and PGSL (Pukekohe Growers Supplies Ltd). 20 teams enjoyed some super weather until about 4pm when the heavens opened in a big way. Happily, most of the participants had departed by then. A feature was that the winning team of Brian Duffin and John Deverall was skipped by 95 year old Jos de Jong from Pukekohe. Second were Joy Sinclair, Sam Compston and Peter Sinclair from Waiuku, 3rd were Blondie

Taupo, Ron Wellwood and Malcolm Sharp from Pukekawa with the fourth prize being claimed by Len Corney, Chris Walker and Barry Smith who also hailed from Pukekohe. The best Buckland team prize was won by new member Gladys Howard, Dave Shirley and Allan Brash. Clarks Beach Bowls The Clarks Beach Bowling Club’s October Tournament was held on Thursday the 24th with overcast conditions but only one shower was heavy enough to cause some players to don their rain jackets. The competition is now getting very serious as players really believe they do have a chance to win the big prize on offer at the end of the season. The winners of this tournament and the meat packs put together by New World Waiuku. were: 1st. Houdin; Neil George, John Tukuafu and Glenn Newton. 2nd.The Amigoes. Raewyn Renell, Peter Ballard and Helen Aarts. 3rd. Papakura. Brian Goldfinch, Robert Woodbridge and Denis Waters. The sponsors were: Counties Toyota Papakura. and Longford Park Village, Papakura.

V8 Touring Cars back with a vengeance this weekend The NZV8 Touring Cars promise a season to remember with an exciting line up of drivers and race meetings throughout the country including a return to Christchurch’s Ruapuna circuit and the first appearance of the series at Hampton Downs. The opening round at Hampton Downs is upon us next weekend on November 1st and 2nd. Round One is expected to draw a crowd to what will be a high-speed weekend of V8 powered competition with the NZV8 Touring Cars TL and TLX cars setting forth to provide excellent and exciting on-track action for yet another season. With much work done over the off season and in the interests of the public next weekend the NZV8 Touring Cars will be at Hampton Downs alongside other popular formulas including the V8 Supertourers for their third shared meeting. Top billing V8 Supercar driver Jason Bargwanna from Australia returns for his third season of the NZV8 Touring Cars and will pilot Richards Team Motorsport’s Toyota Camry to take on defending champion Nick Ross in the New Generation TLX category. Ross and Bargwanna battled to the final race of the series earlier this year at the V8

Supercars meeting in Pukekohe with the driver from Cambridge eventually becoming victorious over the Aussie to pick up the trophy in his Holden Commodore. Ross and Bargwanna had battled continuously throughout the six round season swapping lead in the championship several times and providing some classic, exciting motorsport moments for the crowds. For this season Nick Ross will be driving Concept Motorsport’s brand new Nissan Altima with which he will fight hard to defend his title. Taking on a brand new car and an unproven brand in the series will be a risky move for the long standing NZV8 driver who has watched the V8 Supercar version of the Altima with much interest and saw a change into the brand as an opportunity not to be missed. The Altima will join the growing line up of TLX car brands which also includes Toyota, Holden and Ford. The New generation TLX cars share the same chassis and gear box with individually sourced V8 powerplants from the relevant manufacturer parity-tuned to around 500 horsepower. In the NZV8 Touring Cars TL category the resurgence of iconic Team Kiwi Racing is the

big news for the class as the team can see a wonderful opportunity in re-entering the national championship. Entering in style, TKR have signed another icon in New Zealand motorsport Craig Baird and have also purchased the 2013-14 championship winning car in a strong bid to win the series in their first season of return. Baird needs no introduction with a list of motorsport accolades from here and around the world earning him international acclaim, but is perhaps known best to New Zealanders for his time in V8 Supercars including his previous relationship with TKR in that series. TKR will also be running a second car with the job of driving it being awarded to an upcoming driver of their choice yet to be decided but as a scholarship to promote kiwi talent into professional motorsport. The classic NZV8 Touring Cars TL category is the perfect battle ground for not only proven top drivers such as Baird but those on the way up through the ranks and destined for great things on the world’s motorsport platform. Defending TL champion Ian Booth will not be competing this year as he concentrates on his off-track role as NZV8 Touring

Cars Chairman. Lower Hutt’s James McLaughlin could be the strongest challenge to Baird after leading the championship throughout the majority of last season only to lose the lead with a series of mishaps at the final round in April. Another tough challenger comes in the form of Auckland’s Kevin Williams who won the final round at Pukekohe in his Ford Falcon putting on a strong performance in front of the massive V8 Supercar crowd. Williams now moving into a Holden Commodore introduces the brand new NZV8 420-400WR powerplant into the series which he believes will be a very exciting option for the future of this popular championship. With two internationally acclaimed V8 Supercars drivers, a V8 Supercars team and a list of drivers both veteran and promising talents on the rise, the NZV8 Touring Cars brings all the action a motorsport fan could possibly want in two very competitive fast, V8 powered categories. The NZV8 Touring Cars begin competing around New Zealand from next weekend at Hampton Downs with their six round calendar including Pukekohe, Ruapuna, Teretonga, Manfeild and a grand final at the V8 Supercars event in April 2015.

If wires are not properly installed or repaired, hiring an electrician prevents such scenarios from happening and keeps your home and family safe. If ever there are any electrical issues that need to be addressed within your home then an electrician should always be your first port of call.
