World Champs call-up out of the blue in Peru A former Waiuku man who learned to surf at Karioitahi found himself unexpectedly in the World Surfing Championships in Peru last week.

Sean Dillon was in Peru teaching English at Markham College when he found out the New Zealand team at the World Championships were a man down after one of the members withdrew. A friend of Sean’s suggested Sean could take that place, Surfing New Zealand approved the decision, and Sean found out two days before his heat that he was in the World Championships. He admits to being a bit nervous at the call-up: “I competed a bit at boardriders level when I was younger and have done a couple of national circuit style contests as well as the Christian surfers contests. I actually hadn’t surfed a heat in about three years so I was a little rusty and nervous going into the first heat,” he said. “I had been super busy with work so I hadn’t surfed for two weeks either so it was a bit rough. It seems to be a bit of a Waiuku trend getting late call ups for international events. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pull a Beaver, but the intention was there,” he says, referring to Stephen Donald’s late call-up for the All Blacks in the World Cup. Continued P3

He received life threatening injuries from the assault from which he has spent two months recovering in a rehabilitation unit. Following publicity about the case, Police arrested a 16 year old local man in September who was charged with the assault. Detective Kiley Dalbeth of Counties Manukau South CIB says that the arrest would not have been possible without the assistance from the Pukekohe community. “However the investigation is still ongoing and we firmly believe that the man we have arrested did not act alone. We are still interested in hearing from anyone who can help to identify the man’s cooffenders. We believe that someone local to the Pukekohe area will have this information and we strongly encourage them to come forward to assist the investiga-

As plans were put in place last week for a fundraising event this Thursday for a local man brutally beaten in August, police investigating the serious assault announced an arrest. On August 1, 24-year-old Adam Benefield, of Otaua, was at a relative’s address on Sapling Place, Pukekohe. He left on foot at around midnight. It is believed that he was heading to meet up with friends in the area. Shortly after leaving Sapling Place and not long after midnight, he was found unconscious on the road outside the block of shops situated at the intersection of Princess Street and Beatty Road, Pukekohe, by members of the public. Prior to him being located, yelling was heard outside the shops and people were seen running from the scene.

their young daughters Aaliyah and Layla witnessed their father in the Emergency department. “Initially it was just awful. Our oldest daughter (Layla, 2) saw Adam when he was being resuscitated and had recurring nightmares about it. We were all struggling and unsettled. It is better now but life is a lot different and it is hard to adjust to.” Tim Gregory of Saloon Saloon says the trivia night is designed to be a welcome distraction for the family, while raising enough money to make a small difference to their lives. “This is an emotional story for the locals of Franklin. We need to band together here and reach out for Adam.” Booths and outside tables can be reserved by calling Tim on 238-8304. The event is $5 per person.

Last week youngsters throughout the Franklin region dressed up in ghoulish costumes and charged into their trick or treating and Halloween festivities, often to the annoyance of some local residents. Each year we have stories of groups of ‘children’ harassing people for lollies and there is no doubt it can be intimidating for some. In past years I’ve had groups at my front door demanding confectionery with all the insistence of the IRD, but without their humour. Trick or treating is essentially a foreign thing that adds little to our society, much like Ebola or Justin Bieber. But don’t go blaming it on the Americans. While our steady diet of American television shows is probably the most familiar presentation of Halloween dress-ups, the tradition goes back to the Middle Ages, when people would beg for food on ‘Hallowmas’. It even gets a mention from Shakespeare, in the 1593 play Two Gentlemen of Verona, where one character is accused of whining ‘like a beggar at Hallowmas’. Of course this week we have another English tradition, with Guy Fawkes Night, which had its origins in the Gunpowder Plot just 12 years after Shakespeare’s play referenced Halloween. Apart from the Christmas pavlova and losing a test cricket series against Australia, we don’t really have any New Zealand traditions that have taken off. Waitangi Day may one day become that day but it isn’t yet, Anzac Day is more of a memorial than a festive occasion, and Queens Birthday weekend is just a day off. We need to start our own traditional festive day. There’s been little support at work for a National Nigel Day, so my vote is for May 29. Hillary Day; where we can celebrate achievement by all New Zealanders on the anniversary of the climbing of Mt Everest. What do you think?

The proposal to introduce a toll on Auckland’s motorways is increasingly looking to be the only real option to fund Auckland’s massive transport funding shortfall. Tolling motorways is a user pays system, which would make it the fairest system, with those that use vehicles and the transport system, paying. There must however, be an alternative in place with a comprehensive public

transport network running frequently across all parts of Auckland. This includes passenger train services on all rail lines including to Waiuku, Pokeno and Huapai, and bus lanes or new light rail tram routes on arterial roads which will become very congested with traffic avoiding the motorways. Animal owners prepare for fireworks ‘nightmare’ Fireworks; and the nightmare for animal owners is nearly here. Over the last few years our community has grown as people move here to enjoy their idealistic rural living. And that has brought more and more fireworks. We are very lucky in that many of our surrounding neighbours either have livestock and horses, or appreciate the danger of fireworks. Unfortunately that is not the case generally. At this time of the year horses are foaling and other livestock are birthing. Horses particularly are flight animals. The first hint of danger and they will bolt, often blindly. If you saw first-hand some of the consequences, whilst waiting desperately until someone arrives with a gun to put an animal out of its misery, you would never light another firework, ever. The worst scenario is the periodic sudden and short bursts over a period of time means that owners of animals are on high alert for up to two weeks at a time, remaining at home at night and dashing out at the first sound to try and calm frightened and anxious animals. It seems some new arrivals in the district have contempt for the rural environment and selfishly insist on prolonged periods of fireworks regardless of pleas from neighbours not to. If you really must see fireworks, go to a public display where you will see far

more than any home display. They are well managed, well-advertised and like the Waiuku event, come with associated entertainment to make a great family event. Although we can’t go because we have animals to care for, I can imagine (from what we see from our pad“If you saw docks standing with horses) it is a great first-hand event. some of the Last year we had consequences, someone nearby having a boozy party with whilst waiting endless fireworks desperately until which meant we were someone arrives out in the paddocks until after midnight with a gun to until we were certain put an animal our animals were out of its misery, calm enough to be left alone. you would never Whilst ideally there light another would be no firefirework, ever.” works, at best there should only be public managed displays. However, all we get to hope for is that people, especially those in rural areas will show some respect for the community they are part of and certainly some consideration for their neighbours. Last week’s Post Newspaper carried an article stating the Franklin Local Board felt that the Uniform Annual General Charge for all ratepayers should be raised to its maximum. The actual resolution at the Franklin Local Board meeting read: That the Franklin Local Board recommends that the Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC) is set at a higher level than currently to ensure that a higher proportion of total rates is covered by the UAGC than that based on the capital value of a property, and that the LTP consultation material includes options for increasing the UAGC from the current level to the maximum permissible.

Local politicians at odds over funding gap As Auckland Council considers a range of options to fund what it says is a multibillion dollar shortfall in transport funding, Franklin Local Board Chair Andy Baker and Hunua MP Andrew Bayly have differing views on how to raise those funds. Options including motorway toll roads or a regional fuel tax have been touted as solutions, and Andrew Baker says his personal preference would be tolls on the motorways, although he notes the issue hasn’t yet been discussed formally by the Franklin Local Board. Andrew Bayly says tolls on motorways would raise a jurisdiction issue - “They (Auckland Council) don’t own the motorways,” he points out.

“It is interesting that National has spent $11bn on transport over the past three years and is planning to spend $12bn over the next 10 years on new highways and $1.8bn on local roads in partnership with Councils. So Government has been and continues to play it part in further building good transport links in Auckland.” But Andrew Baker says his experience in Tokyo has shown just how effective good public transport can be: “What keeps the place moving is their public transport – five different rail systems or networks – above ground, below ground and a mix. Along with connecting buses, they like most other major cities have wonderful and fully patronised public

transport. “My personal view is that we have to do something and from what I am aware of, the tolling of the motorway system is the fairest and most simple. “At the end of the day it comes down to simple maths – what does it actually cost now to move around, how can we do it more efficiently or economically and who should pay. “This is certainly one issue that there will never be agreement over and it is going to take some political guts to make a final decision. It will also need the Government on board as it is their roads we want to toll.” But Andrew Bayly says central government has already done a lot for Auck-

land, and plugging this funding gap is an Auckland issue. “The issue is how Auckland Council shoulders its burden. The government is not, however, keen on imposing additional taxes on New Zealanders by way of a fuel tax. The issue of rates is for the Council,” Andrew Bayly said. Whatever is the ultimate decision, one thing is for sure; it’s going to cost more to live in Auckland.

Unfortunately he dislocated his shoulder at the end of the next heat and couldn’t surf the remainder of the event. I ended up surfing two more heats and getting placed 37th overall, while he would have been something like 40th.” The surf match-up coming soon after the NZ Rugby League team had beaten the Aussies, Sean admits to mentioning that result to further rub it in to the Australian supporters. New comedy a hot ticket item Waiuku Theatre Group is currently rehearsing their latest play – ‘Wife after Death’ a comedy by Eric Chappell. The show is being directed by Jo Scobie with Alan Thomson as Assistant Director. With strong sales and sold out shows already, the cast and crew are excited to be counting down the days until opening. Joining some Waiuku Theatre regulars in the cast is ‘new girl’ Nicole Sims, who says the group has a real family atmosphere and that the support from them has been fantastic. “Wife After Death has been an awesome journey,” she says, adding that her character, Jane, has been lots of fun. Also returning for a bigger role after a cameo as a maid in last year’s Secret Bridesmaid’s Business, is Julie Hammond, who has “enjoyed being part of this production, having a larger part this time. I feel that I learned so much more from the rest of this great cast.” Comedian and national treasure Dave Thursby has died, and on the day of his funeral, friends and colleagues gather beside his coffin to pay their last respects. There’s Harvey, who wrote Dave’s material; Vi, Harvey’s wife; Kevin, Dave’s agent, and Kevin’s wife Jane. Dave’s glamorous widow Laura has arranged a funeral to remember, complete with

Student talent on display at View Road

The Waiuku Schools’ Year Seven and Eight Art Exhibition is on currently at View Road School’s hall and features an amazing 661 pieces of art on display, created by over 400 students. The display features work from nine primary schools in the Waiuku area and the pieces exhibited have largely been chosen by the children themselves. Co-ordinated

by View Road School Visual Art Specialist Sue Walsham, the display is held every two years and will be open until November 6. “There are a host of outstanding pieces of art on display,” Sue says. “There is a lot of talent and imagination in our young folk, all of which should be celebrated, nurtured and fostered.”

The exhibition is open from 8.30am to 4.30pm until Thursday this week, and from 8.30am to 2pm on Friday November 7. Wise and Foolish Bridesmaids. Righteousness by Faith We all know this story well, so we will just skip to the punch line at the very end. All ten in the story were loyal Church members of good and regularly standing, all had a “Title to Heaven,” but sadly only half of them had a “Fitness for Heaven,” and so those who were foolish and were found unfit for the purity of Heaven were locked out or shut outside of the door, outside of Jesus. Remember John 10:9 Jesus said, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” Also in Hebrew the word Door and Decision is essentially the same thing, so you must decide to come in at the door Christ Jesus for remember a similar theme in Revelation 22:14-15 “Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without [are] dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” Here we have the same theme of gates and doors all with the same connotation, it is a divider between those inside and safe and those kept outside. It is also a “Cities of Refuge,” imagery.

“The proud heart strives to earn salvation; but both our title to heaven and our fitness for it are found in the righteousness of Christ. The Lord can do nothing toward the recovery of man until, convinced of his own weakness, and stripped of all self-sufficiency, he yields himself to the control of God. Then he can receive the gift that God is waiting to bestow. From the soul that feels his need, nothing is withheld. He has unrestricted access to Him in whom all fullness dwells. {DA 300} “And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. John 17:19. The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed; the righteousness by which we are sanctified is imparted. The first is our title to heaven, the second is our fitness for heaven.” Summing this all up; Righteousness - Justified - Imputed – Title to Heaven (Instant upon conversion) Righteousness – Sanctified – Imparted – Fitness for Heaven. (therefore your body should always remain a pure and holy and living sacrifice, by our daily lifestyle)

So you can have a Title to Heaven, and still not get there. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Belief is of no value because the devils; believe and tremble, but they do not get Heaven. Romans 5:20b “But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound,” Grace, Title to Heaven, Sinlessness, is all poured out in a bountiful abundance, of so much more quantity than sin could ever be, so there is no good reason for any of us to miss out on Heaven. The lost just did not avail themselves of abundant and bountiful Grace. “As the penitent sinner, contrite before God, discerns Christ’s atonement in his behalf, and accepts this atonement as his only hope in this life and the future life, his sins are pardoned. This is justification by faith. Sanctification is not the work of a moment, an hour, a day, but

of a lifetime. It is not gained by a happy flight of feeling, but is the result of constantly dying to sin, and constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in the character by feeble, intermittent efforts. It is only by long, persevering effort, sore discipline, and stern conflict, that we shall overcome. It [sanctification] is not merely a theory, an emotion, or a form of words, but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking, and dressing be such as to secure the preservation of physical, mental, and moral health, that we may present to the Lord our bodies--not an offering corrupted by wrong habits but--”a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.” The Scriptures are the great agency in the transformation of character. . . . If studied and obeyed, the Word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute. There is no such thing as instantaneous sanctification. True sanctification is a daily work, continuing as long as life shall last.” {FLB 114} “Righteousness within is testified to by righteousness without. He who is righteous within is not hard-hearted and unsympathetic, but day by day he grows into the image of Christ, going on from strength to strength. He who is being sanctified by the truth will be selfcontrolled, and will follow in the footsteps of Christ until grace is lost in glory.” {MYP 35} “Heaven with its attractions is before you, an eternal weight of glory, which you may lose or gain. Which shall it be? Your life and your character will testify the choice you have made. I feel the more anxious because I see so many indifferent upon the subjects of infinite importance. They are always busy here and there about matters of minor importance, and the one great subject is put out of their thoughts. They have no time to pray, no time to watch, no time to search the Scriptures. They are altogether too busy to make the necessary preparation for the future life. They cannot devote time to perfect Christian characters and in diligence to secure a title to heaven.” {OHC 44} “If you have life eternal, you must be earnest and work to the point. . . . Glorify God by choosing His way, His will. He will be your wise counsellor and your fast, unchanging friend.” {OHC 44} Love to God and love to man will give the clear title to heaven. {OHC 73} (Jesus condensing of the 10 Commandments) Matthew 22:3740 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” This is telling us with Hebrew poetic imagery, that all scripture or the whole Bible stands or falls on this one “Love” principle. “I know that there is nothing of so great importance as to be getting ready for heaven. Nothing but the righteousness of Christ can entitle us to the blessings reserved for the redeemed. I am trying most earnestly to commit my all to Him without one reservation. Faith in Jesus’ efficacious blood is my only hope, my only stronghold. Jesus is a faithful Saviour. I love His name. I love His cross. I love His Word. I shall never be ashamed while I trust in Him. The promise He has given me, He has signed and sealed with His own blood.” {9MR 319}

Students build skills and community assets An initiative developed between Waiuku College, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway and industry training organisation BCITO has already reaped benefits for students and the wider community with the construction of a new jigger shed for the Railway. The programme has its roots in a suggestion put to the College some years ago by GVR Marketing Manager and Heritage Officer Ross Crook, who was looking to work with students on a building project. At the time, it wasn’t possible to put it all together, but last year he approached John Robinson, Head of Faculty of Technology, at the College and the idea blossomed. The result is that the College now offers a Level 3 Building and Construction class, something which previously students would have had to undertake at a tertiary institution such as MIT. John says there were around 16 students in the class initially, but as the year progressed some have gone into further education or into apprenticeships. Students still complete regular classwork in other subjects, but throughout this year have been gaining a qualification through this course. Interest has been high, and John says it is looking likely the College will offer two classes in the subject in 2015. Ross Crook says the plans for the jigger building are based on 1946 NZ Rail plans, and then amended to meet current standards and designed so the students could construct the building as a ‘flat pack’ at the College, then transport, assemble and finish on site in Glenbrook. Local tradesman Jim Collie laid the footings for the shed and some of the students have offered to continue working on the project to complete it after school finishes for the year. Both Ross Crook and John Robinson say the project has been a winner for all concerned, and add that BCITO representatives who have seen its progression have been very impressed with the concept.

GVR’s Ross Crook and College Head of Faculty John Robinson with students Jed Thomson, Bryan Roberts, Sam Daniels and John Coulston. A further benefit has been that the GVR has paid for the materials, which means the students did not have to pay for course materials to attain their qualifications, as they would have had to do in other courses. “We appreciate that very much,” commented student Jed Thomson. Ross Crook adds that the concept has worked very well, and the GVR would be happy to look at a similar arrangement for future projects, while John Robinson says the combination of gaining the qualification and experiencing a building project on-site has been excellent for the young trainees. He adds that anyone looking to take on an apprentice builder can contact Waiuku College and he can pass the details on to the students.

New row for Tara?

Cherril wins prize pack The Post Newspaper’s recent competition regarding the launch of the book ‘Play in the Garden’ by local author Sarah O’Neil saw Waiuku’s Cherril Thorburn win the prize of a copy of the book and a $100 gardening voucher. The book presents a range of fun outdoor activities for children, and Sarah said the book, available at Pukekohe Paper Plus, was a lot of fun to write. Lucky winner Cherril is pictured with the Post Newspaper’s Head of Graphic Design Lynn Douglas.

Waiuku’s trans-ocean rower Tara Remington is considering re-joining the boat ‘Unfinished Business’ in the Trans-Atlantic Rowing Race from the Canary Islands to the West Indies. Tara was part of the team of four women rowers who competed in the 2007 race. They finished in 51 days, 16 hours and 31 minutes and became the new world record holders for a women’s four. This record remains unbroken. She first entered the race in 2005 with her rowing partner Iain Rudkin but suffered immense seasickness and had their boat battered by a three-and-a-half metre shark they nicknamed ‘Abby’. The pair had to abandon the race.

Maiden speech for new Hunua MP New Hunua MP Andrew Bayly has made his maiden speech in parliament, highlighting his rural roots, and his family’s arrival in New Zealand in the 1800’s as well as his aims for the future of his electorate. He spoke of his experiences as a businessman, adventurer and tank commander in the army, and paid tribute to former MPs from the region. He also talked about the challenges facing the country and the Hunua region, and stated one particular matter that he wishes to achieve is to work with the people of Ngati Te Ata to conclude a just and equitable settlement with the Crown. • The full text of Andrew Bayly’s speech is on the Post Newspaper’s website.

The day was topped off with a barbecue donated by Gubb Pump & Well Services Ltd, Barbs Bar and the WB&DA. Pukekohe’s Les Morgan, (pictured right), has collected one of the major awards at the Westpac Auckland Business Awards – South final event earlier this month. The award was in recognition of his role as General Manager, Sudima Auckland Airport. At the final event, Les was announced as the winner of the Excellence in Leadership category, to which he says is an honour bestowed upon his whole team. “From the beginning, I felt somewhat uncomfortable putting myself forward for the award, as I am a big believer in celebrating the achievements of the collective efforts of the wider team. However, this prestigious acknowledgement is something our entire team can feel proud of. I am lucky to be surrounded by a team of dedicated, hardworking and passionate professionals,” he said.

Having worked in the hotel industry for nearly 20 years, and in senior management roles for the past eight, Mr Morgan first joined Sudima Auckland Airport ahead of its opening and was promoted to the trans-Tasman director of operations role in early 2012.

Service with a local smile

Local protesters urged to think The Egg Producers Federation is urging those sympathising with the proposed demonstration today (Tuesday) against Craddock’s new egg farm in Pukekohe, to stop and think. If colony farming were to be banned, they say, New Zealand’s egg supply would be significantly more vulnerable to biosecurity threats such as avian influenza which can decimate whole flocks of birds at a time. A spokesperson for the Federation said colony birds have equivalent welfare to those in barns and free-range and the eggs are a costeffective option with high biosecurity status.

Does the aroma of freshly baked bread makes us kinder to strangers?

It’s comforting, homely and – to almost all of us – undeniably delicious. But the smell of freshly baked bread may have positive effects far beyond the obvious ones. Researchers believe it may also make us kinder to strangers. They found that shoppers were more likely to alert a passer-by that they had dropped a belonging if, at the time, they were also passing near a bakery giving off the mouth-watering aroma. Their findings, published in the Journal of Social Psychology, suggest certain smells trigger a positive mood that leads

Pukekohe microlight ‘My World’ opens in Pollok crash injures two Shortly after 2pm on Saturday Police and other emergency services were called to a small private airstrip in Runciman Road, Pukekohe where a light plane classed as a microlight had crashed. Two people onboard the microlight suffered serious injuries and were initially tendered first aid by friends and fellow flying enthusiasts who were part of a small gathering at the field. The two occupants of the microlight, aged 61 and 63, were thought to be experienced pilots and the microlight was

a professionally constructed machine. Both men were taken to Middlemore Hospital and were thought to be in a serious but stable condition. It appears the microlight crashed whilst landing, the cause is yet to be determined. Weather conditions were fine and not thought to have contributed to the crash. Civil Aviation were advised and will follow-up with the pilot and passenger in due course. The owner of the microlight was present at the airfield but was not one of the occupants.

Food and fun at College

There was plenty going on at Waiuku College last week with mufti days for Halloween and for community support. Above: Year 13 students from Waiuku College enjoyed Friday’s Halloween theme. Pictured in their costumes are Laura Wilkins, Dawn Dodd, Devon Morris, Brooke Quilty, Tylah Curran, Josh Steele, Naylor Browne and Owen Schonewille. Below: earlier in the week students from class 10LA held a mufti day to collect food items for the Waiuku Food Bank. The response was fantastic, and almost 800 items of food were delivered. Below are Laura Torpey, Jade Thomson, Claudia Price and Jewel Henderson with some of the collection.

Labour Weekend saw the opening of the latest art exhibition and competition for the Pollok Arts and Crafts Cooperative. Following a growing tradition, this year’s competition attracted plenty of local artists and craftspeople. The theme was ‘My World’, which brought out a range of interpretations and unique perspectives. Guest judge for the event was Ron Left, Head of Department at the School of Art and Design, at AUT. He was genuinely impressed by the quality and passion he saw in the range of works. Also as usual, there was a wide range of media represented, including painting, photography, fabric art and some quite stunning assemblages. Many in the audience at the opening function commented after how impressed they were with the insightful comments Ron made about the choices he made. For a man involved in the higher echelons of the Auckland art world, he was genuinely supportive of the local art scene, noting how universal the ‘story telling’ of the visual arts can be, irrespective of its origins. The quality of so many of the works made choosing a single winner difficult, so he also awarded seven ‘Highly Commended’ certificates, and commented on the reasons for his choices. Overall winner this year was Leonie Richardson for her photographic image entitled, ‘Entrance and Exit’. This stunningly simple image of a hallway with a door at the end, “invited the viewer to bring his/her own story to the situation, making it a catalyst for their own world of memories, experiences,” as Ron remarked. Highly commended were: Robin Short: ‘Pohutukawa Planet’ (photograhy). E Jackson: ‘Boy’s World’ (photographic assemblage). Doug Fisher: ‘My World of Waste and De-

AFFORDABLE ELEGANCE AT GABLES Above: Leonie Richardson’s photographic entry ‘Entrance and Exit’ won first prize. struction’ (assemblage). Thelma Dorricott: ‘Paper Dresses’ and ‘Cushions’. Phil Jordan: ‘View of Puponga’ (mixed media). Barbara Warrender: ‘Nana’s Kitchen’ (assemblage) The exhibition runs to November 17, and visitors to the gallery are invited to pick their ‘Viewer’s Choice’.

Big bang ban Locals wanting to celebrate Guy Fawkes are urged to find a public display or keep to their backyards – and not let off fireworks in public places, where the activity is banned. The ban came into force in May this year. While fireworks were banned in some parts of the region, they are now banned year-round in public places across the whole of Auckland. Cr Cathy Casey, chair of Auckland Council’s Community Development and Safety Committee says the ban protects vegetation and property from fireworks damage “Public fireworks displays are a great way to enjoy fireworks with your community and the health and safety risks are well managed,” Councillor Casey said.

Family feel to new local gym The newest gym to open in Waiuku is a family-run business, with local sporting couple Mac and Nikki Hira the driving force behind RX Fitness 235. Mac has played rugby to rep level for Counties and was heavily involved in Waiuku Rugby from the age of five, through college teams to club premiers. Nikki played a variety of sports, but played England Students Rugby League, and trained with the GB Rugby League Squad, before giving it up to study. She still plays Saturday netball for Loyal. Nikki says the gym idea arose after she got interested in Mac’s Crossfit training which he had been doing in East Tamaki, and when he set up some equipment at home she found herself hooked as well. “Then a couple of friends were interested, so there was a few of us just working out together at home. The wonderful thing about Waiuku is word spreads! So we just got to a stage where we had more people interested, and not enough room, so we looked to bigger premises.” Mac has a Level 1 Crossfit Coaching Certificate, and Nikki was completing hers on the weekend, so they aim to coach together as a family gym. With a background in Sports Therapy, Nikki is a Sports Masseuse, currently with Franklin Physiotherapy, and she says the gym training and sports therapy make a great combination. RX Fitness 235 also works with another local, Selwyn Herewini, who has a background in the armed forces, expert knowledge in group training, and has a great philosophy on exercise and how

to get the best out of people. Selwyn takes the circuits and bootcamp sessions during term time. The gym focuses on functional movement, with mechanics and technique a priority and sessions are designed for all levels of fitness. “We are teaching people ‘to do the common, uncommonly well’,” Nikki says. “We train individuals to go back to using the body at a functional level, and combine weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio. “Everyone’s intensity levels are dif-

ferent, and are respected.” RX Fitness 235 offers a complimentary class on a Sat morning for those with no experience who are wanting to try it out (bookings essential). They then offer a block of six Intro Classes over three weeks to bring people up to a level where they can jump into any of the mainstream classes. They have monthly special memberships and look forward to helping locals meet their fitness goals.

Property sales jump Provisional residential data from real estate group Harcourts for the month of October shows written sales have jumped by 5% compared to August. Stock levels are up by 16% on the same time last year, however the number of properties available are still not keeping up with demand. The average sales price in Auckland and Northland sits at $666,740, which is up 3% on the same time last year. Prices continue to trend upwards, and auctions continue to be the sales method of choice for Aucklanders, accounting for over 40% of new listings.

Hearings tackle growth Issues of growth and the rural/urban boundaries for Auckland came under the scrutiny of the Auckland Unitary Plan Independent Hearings Panel last week. The Panel will consider more than 1000 submission points raised by 340 separate submissions covering eight key issues including: urban growth, economic well-being, historic heritage, Mana Whenua issues, natural resources, coastal environment, rural environment, and responding to climate change.

Council backtracks over fireplace ban

Just days after announcing a proposed new bylaw which would have required homeowners to remove noncompliant fires when selling a home after May of next year, Council has hurriedly back-tracked on the proposal. However, despite the decision, Council is still saying the timeframe of an indoor fire ban within four years will still happen. Auckland Council’s Governing Body says it made the decision last week to postpone the passing of the Air Quality Bylaw. Councillors agreed that fur-

ther discussion was needed with the government to meet their legislative requirement and garner support for the large number of Aucklanders this bylaw will affect. Councillor Calum Penrose, Chair Regulatory and Bylaws Committee says, “We have over 80,000 households in Auckland that currently use open fires and old wood burners. We would like the government to work with us in providing people with clean heat alternatives and support the more vulnerable in our community whose only form

Mayor Len Brown has proposed a change to Auckland Council’s rating policy for its upcoming Long-term Plan 2015-2025, in light of recent changes in property values across Auckland. The latest revaluation figures in Auckland have altered the balance between business and residential ratepayers. While the average capital value in the business sector rose 15.8 percent, residential properties rose by an average of 34.8 percent. The Mayor is proposing to offset the impact of revaluations by holding the business sector contribution to rates at the same

proportion as 2014/2015 (33.3% of $1.4 billion), this will prevent additional rates being transferred to residents. From 2016/17 this proportion will start to decline again until it reaches 25.8 percent in 2025/2026. The Mayor is also proposing that the Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC) – the single fixed rates charge – remains at the current level, adjusted for the 2.5 per cent rate increase, of $381. “Differences to the UAGC have an impact on how rates are distributed across our communities and is always hotly debated,” the Mayor said.

of heating is open fires.” Cr Penrose says the proposed bylaw needs to be put through to meet the AQNES and also for the overall health of the wider Auckland community – 110 people dying a year from illnesses due to fine particle emissions from indoor fires is another vital reason to rectify this problem. The proposed bylaw will go back to the Regulatory and Bylaws Committee in February 2015. The overall timeframe of an indoor fire ban in late 2018 is not expected to change.

9.6% rates rise for some Rates policy change Responding to media reports that some Auckland households will face a rates rise of up to 9.6 per cent next year, Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says: “Len Brown’s pledge to cap rates rises at 2.5 per cent will come as little relief to Albert-Eden ratepayers who will face an average 9.61 per cent increase.” “87,000 Auckland ratepayers will be whacked with rates rises of over 10 per cent. That’s on top of Mr Brown’s efforts to find new ways of taxing Aucklanders with fuel duties or a motorist tax.” “Auckland Council only needs more money because it’s top heavy, wastes money, and hasn’t worked to achieve any of the promised ‘super city’ efficiencies.“

Skin Problems - The Inside Story

By Carol Eggleton, N.D., M.H.D., BHSc, Registered Naturopath and Medical Herbalist Our skin faces the external environment and protects us from the elements but it is also a reflection of conditions within our bodies. Skin conditions may be the result of internal imbalances or of an inappropriate response to internal factors eg; hormonal or immune. Bacteria, fungi and viruses can also cause skin problems especially when our defences are low. The skin is also one of our eliminatory organs and works alongside the kidneys and liver in removing waste products from our bodies. A natural approach to skin conditions often requires improvements in digestion, assimilation and elimination of nutrients and wastes. Stress, anxiety and emotional factors can also play a part in the development of skin conditions. Holistic treatment for skin problems is tailored to the individual and usually requires both internal and external components, as well as changes to diet and lifestyle. It may involve cleansing, strengthening of the digestive system and the immune system, balancing of hor-

mones and dealing with the psychological, social and emotional factors involved. Addressing all of these takes time and may require professional help, however there are also some simple ways to help yourself deal with the symptoms of skin conditions: To ease itching and inflamed skin make an infusion of chamomile tea bags, allow to cool and apply the teabags to the area or bathe with the tea. Creams containing chickweed, comfrey, marshmallow, licorice and aloe vera are also helpful. For bacterial infections including boils and acne herbs such as echinacea and golden seal can help to combat the bacteria and boost the immune response. Tea tree, manuka and lavender essential oils are also antiseptic and can be applied locally. Colloidal silver may also help with bacterial infections and can be applied locally and taken internally. Viral infections such as herpes - including cold sores and shingles may respond to topical applications of St John’s wort infused oil. Herbs that are restorative to the nervous system including passionflower and St John’s wort may also be taken internally. Oats included in the diet are also good for the nervous system. Good nutrition is essential for a healthy skin so a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and high quality proteins is important. Supplements such as Vitamin C and Zinc may help with bacterial and viral skin problems by boosting the immune system. Vitamin A and Betacarotene may be helpful for chronic skin conditions including acne and eczema– good sources are apricots, carrots, dark fish and green vegetables. Fish oils may assist with inflammatory skin conditions so include dark fish or flax seeds (linseed) in your diet. Your local health shop can help with supplements and topical treatments. If you require further help call in on Wednesday’s to Way of Life for a chat or call (09) 2387806 to make an appointment for a consultation.

By Diane Breen DipHom NZCH (Intern) Technically this is extreme anxiety about sitting exams, amounting almost to a phobia. It consists of feelings of panic and inability to concentrate while studying and during exams. It may be severe enough to cause stomach upsets, diarrhea, headaches etc. Mostly it is an over sensitivity or over anxiety problem, however often there are problems in the home which make study difficult; or the student may feel overwhelmed by pressure to achieve high marks. An underlying lack of self-confidence and inability to concentrate can be deep seated and may benefit from constitutional homeopathic treatment to decrease the underlying sensitivity, however you

baby grows e.g the bladder and the diaphragm (the muscle under the lower rib cage). Muscles will be required to work to support the low back and also to assist in guiding the baby into the minor pelvis (e.g psoas muscle). Osteopathy can help to release these structures.

By Helen Wright BSc(Hons) Ost(UK); CMIOSH (UK); PGDip (Hlth. Erg) (UK) NZ/ACC/UK Registered Osteopath Human Factors and Ergonomics consultant During pregnancy mum-to-be needs to be able to provide the support for a developing fetus and her body needs to be able to adjust/adapt to major changes in a relatively short period of time. It would be great if all this could occur with minimum pain/discomfort. Osteopathy can help to support this process. The most obvious support that an osteopath can provide is to help to ensure that the body can adapt to support and accommodate the growing fetus and adapt to the changes that enable child birth. The increase in the uterus, girth size and weight will lead to postural compensations, compensations that the spine and soft tissues have to accommodate. The pelvis will need to be able to adapt in preparation for child birth. Structures will get compressed as the

The less obvious, but no less important, support that an osteopath can provide include: - release restrictions of the base of the cranium (skull) to support the function of the pituitary gland and facilitate the release of hormones. - ensure that there is mobility around the lower rib cage and the underlying muscle, the diaphragm, to ensure that mum and baby receive a good supply of oxygen and to encourage the diaphragm to function as a ‘pump’ to prevent fluid retention/edema. - ensure that the blood and nerve supply to important structures is not compromised by restrictions in the spine (e.g the nerves from the lower mid spine supply the uterus, the blood supply to the liver to secure optimum health to assist in detoxification of mum and baby). The list goes on. So much to think about? Let us do some of the thinking for you. At least feel free to call us and talk to us about whether we can assist you or ring the shop for an appointment. There are currently osteopaths practicing at the Way of Life Health Shop Mon - Sat (inc) - shop hours.

Best D-Ribose featuring BioEnergy Ribose™

Dr’s Best Suntheanine

Are you tired of being tired? Give your heart and muscles the energy they need! Ribose is an essential 5-carbon sugar (pentose) utilized by the body to produce energy and synthesize DNA and RNA. It does not raise blood sugar levels or lead to diabetes. Ribose is the building block of ATP, the substance found in every cell in our bodies that gives us energy. Without Ribose ATP could not be formed and our cells would become energy deprived.

Suntheanine contains the patented pure form of the amino-acid LTheanine, produced in Japan from green tea leaves. It is pure natural and safe.

As long we stay reasonably fit and our cells get the oxygen they need, this cycle of energy can keep turning unimpeded. However, problems occur when conditions affect how well oxygen flows to our cells or how well our cells use the oxygen. D-Ribose can enhance the energy recovery process, supporting healthy energy levels in heart and muscle tissue. Supports normal heart and muscle function - Support for ischemic heart disease, congestive heart failure and muscle disease such as fibromyalgia – these conditions force the affected heart and muscle to consume energy more quickly than it can be restored. Supplying the affected tissue with ribose stimulates the process of energy recovery and helps the heart and muscles refill their ‘energy tanks’. Ageing - As ageing occurs the muscles lose energy recycling efficiency - ageing muscle generally has fewer mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) than younger muscles. The muscles then run out of energy with exertion, becoming stiff and sore after only mild exercise. High active lifestyles - Athletes or anyone doing high-intensity exercising will drain energy from heart and muscles. Taking ribose before, during and after exercise can maintain energy levels. Practice News

During November our Health Promotion Focus is Prostate Awareness. If you are over 50 years old, or younger with a family member who has had Prostate cancer, or you are having symptoms please make an appointment to discuss this with your doctor. In New Zealand, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, around 3,000 registrations each year, and about 600 deaths from prostate cancer each year (based on the statistics from the Ministry of Health 2007 – 2009 which show an average of 3082 registrations and 602 deaths).

Men who develop prostate cancer are mostly over the age of 65. It rarely occurs in men younger than 55. About one in 13 men will develop prostate cancer before the age of 75. In very elderly men, prostate cancer often grows very slowly and may cause no symptoms. Some men are more at risk of getting prostate cancer than others, but the most

important risk factor is ageing. Men with a family history of prostate cancer have a higher risk; that is, if the father, an uncle or a brother has had prostate cancer. Doctors do not know what causes prostate cancer. They do know, however, that the growth of cancer cells in the prostate is stimulated by male hormones, especially testosterone. Most prostate cancer growth is influenced by testosterone. The speed at which prostate cancer grows varies from man to man. In some men the cancer grows very slowly; in other men, it grows more rapidly. A man with slow growing prostate cancer may live for many years and die of other causes, without ever having symptoms of prostate cancer. If the cancer grows too much, however, the prostate usually squeezes the urethra, which it surrounds. Symptoms may then start, such as difficulty in passing urine. As the same symptoms can be caused by other problems, difficulty in passing urine does not always mean that prostate cancer is present.

HEARING LOSS? YOUR NEXT HEARING AIDS WILL BE AT COST PRICE

November & December Offer - Pay-As-You-Go Hearing Care Plan Far too many of us only think about taking care of our health after all the other daily chores are done. Even if we know that the early diagnosis of many health problems can lead to quick and successful treatments, it is all too tempting to put off a visit to the doctor for fear of hearing bad news or having to discuss intimate details. But an annual checkup does not have to be an unpleasant experience. With a bit of preparation, it is possible to have a rewarding doctor-patient relationship that is based on solid information and self-knowledge. First of all, listen to your body. That is the best way to know when it’s time to see your health care professional. How often you schedule a consultation with your doctor depends on your state of health, age, and gender. Talk to him or her about how often you should have checkups. Above all, remember that you are in charge of your own body. If you have health worries, you can insist on being told all the facts. Here are a few ways to take control of your health.

Get the most out of your annual checkup

SAVE THOUSANDS ON YOU HEARING CARE TEL: 09 239 2826 info@hearinghut.co.nz www.hearinghut.co.nz

Thyroid gland If you think that your thyroid gland is not functioning properly, take note of your symptoms (weight gain, depression, loss of concentration, weight loss, excess energy, hot flashes, heart palpitations, or trembling) and consult your doctor. A thyroid disorder can be detected with a simple blood test.

Eyes Adults aged 20 to 39 years old should undergo an eye examination every two to three years. For people aged 40 to 64 years old, every two years is recommended, and those 65 and older should have their eyes examined on an annual basis.

Ears

The Hearing Hut 171A Manukau Road | Pukekohe | 2120

Heart An electrocardiogram (ECG) could be recommended if you are suffering from arrhythmia, chest pains, or palpitations. This test checks for problems by measuring the heart’s electrical activity.

Breasts

Teeth Visits to the dentist for a dental exam and cleaning are recommended for every six months, but dentists could modify the frequency of these visits. When women become pregnant they should inform their dentist and pay particular attention to their oral health.

A mammogram (an X-ray of the breast tissue) is the most efficient method of detecting breast cancer. It is recommended that women aged between 50 and 69 years of age have a mammogram every two years. The advantage of having regular mammograms for women in other age groups is uncertain.

Chest The doctor will use a stethoscope to listen to your heart and lungs. He or she will ensure that your heart rate is normal.

Anyone who is suspected of suffering hearing loss or an ear problem will be referred to an audiologist for an evaluation. Hearing loss can be caused by aging, genes, ear infections, ear disease, or exposure to high noise levels.

Bones Osteoporosis is detected by means of a bone density test or DEXA scan; the technology used is called quantitative computed tomography. Who should undergo this test? Everyone over 65; those aged between 50 and 64 who are at risk of fractures; and those younger than 50 who suffer from a disease related to bone loss or who have low bone density.

Blood Ideally, blood pressure should be checked once a year. You can ask your doctor for a complete blood evaluation, which involves an analysis of a blood sample to evaluate the number and quality of red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets. Lastly, keep in mind that it is your age, health, and family history of cardiovascular disease that determine how often you should have your blood cholesterol levels checked.

Reproductive system It is important for women to undergo regular pelvic examinations (also known as gynecological examinations). A pelvic examination could also be necessary if there are unusual vaginal secretions or bleeding or if pelvic pain is present.

Feet

Skin Brown marks, lesions, bumps, skin rashes, and beauty spots that have changed colour or size should be pointed out to your doctor.

If you’re at risk of diabetes (family history, obesity, and high blood pressure) your Podiatrist can check if there has been any loss of feeling in certain areas of the foot.

Christmas

10 King St Pukekohe

It’s true that there are still a few weeks before all those Christmas parties begin, but there are plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t procrastinate on this. By looking now for the ideal restaurant, bar, pub, reception hall, or hotel for your party, you’ll have many more possibilities to choose from as you search for a place that will suit your needs. Another advantage of making early reservations is that you’ll be able to choose the nicest room or the best-placed table, an undeniable privilege during this busy time of year when places are snapped up quickly. If you get on the ball now, you won’t end up with the table that no one else wanted, like the one next to the main entrance or the kitchen. Either one of those scenarios are enough to ruin the party mood, whether it’s a romantic dinner for two or a huge reception. If you reserve now, you are more likely to be treated well, as a good customer. One last reason to get busy: if you reserve early, the success of the party is sure to earn you a ton of compliments!

Stunning weekend of BMX racing at Puni The North Island BMX Titles held at the Sunset Coast BMX track on Saturday and Sunday of Labour weekend was a hugely successful event, with two days of action packed racing in good weather, and some excellent results from the host club riders. Bevan Brown and Mackenzie Roberts-Craig were crowned North Island Champions in their classes, Bevan in 35-39 Cruiser Male, and Mackenzie 14 year Girls. In the 35-39 Cruiser Male final, Brown jumped to healthy lead on the first straight, and was never threatened after the first corner. Heath Long was trailing in fourth place heading into the last corner, but pulled off a sensational cornering maneouvre, powering his way into second behind Brown. Mackenzie Roberts-Craig was fast and consistent over the six qualifying motos, with four first placings and two seconds. Then in her 14 year Girls final, she avoided trouble through the first corner, and went on to win, in front of

Australian Number 3 and test team rider Iesha Anderson, a fantastic result. Paiton Taylor backed up her NZ 2 ranking, with a North Island 2 in the six year old girls, and Stu Stenhouse rounded out the podium places with a third in 25-34 Male Cruiser final. Other finalists were Paul Dillon, fifth in 40-44 Cruiser

Male, Cody Lush, sixth in 15 year boys, and Lockie Brown, seventh in 10 year boys. The Brown family results were most impressive, after having their race bikes stolen from Manukau last Monday, and competing on bikes borrowed at short notice. The Trans-Tasman competitions of the “Mighty 11s’ and Senior Test teams saw

New Zealand win the Mighty 11 boys and girls, and the boys senior test team, but the Australian girls senior test team won their competition against the kiwis. Sunset Coast BMX club now look forward to Easter 2016, when the BMXNZ National Championships will be held at their Puni BMX event centre.

Pukekohe rider takes top spot A father’s wise words seemed to be the key to success for Pukekohe’s Kurtis Lilly (right) on Sunday. The 19-year-old Lilly led a Husqvarna 1-2 to the top of the senior 125cc class at the annual two-day Waikato Motocross Championships, on the outskirts of Te Kuiti at the weekend, heading off multitalented moto trials, motocross and enduro exponent Liam Draper (Husqvarna TC125), of Auckland. Lilly was at the top of the standings, three points ahead of Draper, with just one race to go. With Draper finishing back in fifth, this was enough to give Lilly the outright class victory by a flattering seven points. And, it was revealed afterwards, that Lilly was able to clinch the outright win was probably as much due to words of advice from his father, Howard, as it was to

his own undoubted riding talent. “Dad put out a message on my pit board that said ‘settle down’. I was trying pretty hard to put a pass on Turnwald and he just wanted me to back off, settle for third, take the points and the overall win. So that’s what I did. Lilly’s performance on

Sunday revealed him as a serious contender for 125cc class honours when the nationals kick off in Taranaki early next year.. The next major event for Lilly is the annual Auckland Motocross Championships next month. - Words and photo by Andy McGechan, www.BikesportNZ.com

A champion Ute win for Cory combination

Ten year old Leah Kelly from Awhitu, riding Mr Boombastic, was the show hunter category B Overall Champion at Northland’s 2-star show over Labour Weekend.

For the first time as a stand alone event, both of New Zealand’s premier Touring Car series (NZ Supertourers and NZ V8 Touring Cars) came together at Hampton Downs to race on the same bill in what is an encouraging sign of solidarity. In a real win for motorsport fans, both categories provided their own unique brand of racing throughout the three day event. Of note for local enthusiasts was the ground breaking performance of Waiuku driver Cory Holmes. Holmes won the second of three races for the newly formed SsangYong Actyon racing series. With a grid of 28 Utes and a lot of young up and coming drivers, this really underscores the talent Cory possesses and will be right in title contention throughout the summer rounds. The next event on the calendar is the Fuchs 500 at Pukekohe scheduled for November 29 and 30. - By Tim Gregory

Deadline for the receipt of EOI applications is 5pm Monday 1 December 2014. Mail applications for the attention of T. Mossman to Auckland Council, Private Bag 92300, Auckland 1142 or email ruralhalls@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

For more information: contact Ian Alexander or Tracy Mossman on 09 301 0101.

Blue Light Halloween disco a great success It was Waiuku Lions’ member Ivy Tapsell who was the brainchild of bringing a Blue Light Disco to Waiuku for Halloween this year, and the Blue Light Disco team and local Board Member Brendon Compton were really keen to get involved. The group would love to see it become an annual event in the future. Ivy has been a member of the Lions for 10 years and is currently in the Youth Committee who have assisted the Police in organising the event.

The Police Blue Light team provided the DJ, music, lights and prizes and Police for security, while the Waiuku Lions decorated up a storm, set up the hall, arranged additional prizes and giveaways and provided a light canteen. Organisers thanked the Waiuku Memorial Town Hall group, Gary Pyes, SuperValue and all the other volunteers who helped make the night a success. Brendon Compton said the evening was a great success, with over 200 attending.

Brendon Compton puts on his ‘scary face’ with youngsters Charlize Chandra, and sisters Amelia and Ella Rogers on Friday evening.

Your A-Z of Trades & Services

The plasterer knows what he’s doing! Need a ceiling resurfaced, a wall done? It could be time to call a plasterer to be sure of having an impeccable end product. His experience and his little tricks of the trade will meet your expectations. The plasterer applies limestone compounds such as plaster, mortar, cement, stucco and others; he installs mouldings, metal trims and angles, makes and fills joints in drywall panels, works on plaster mouldings and the casting and installation of plasterwork. After having cleaned the surface to be plastered, he mixes the ingredients to obtain a plaster of the desired consistency. With the help of various tools (trowels, brushes and guns), he applies smooth, even coats of plaster. Depending on the

CARAVANS

work required, he could apply coats of roughcast on the exterior walls of a building in such a way as to create surfaces which can resist the elements. The plasterer is also skilful at creating decorative motifs in the finishing coat as well as moulding and installing panels, cornices and ornamental mouldings made of plaster. Unless you are confident, and have some prior plastering experience, it is probably best to leave plastering jobs up to the professionals – the finish will be much better (if not, you can always tell them you expect more and have them improve it), and you will save yourself a lot of time and potentially money. Besides this, a plasterer will have years of expertise and know-how, and will often be able to finish a job far quicker than you will.
