Natural Building Centre

The Natural Building Centre are based at Plas Tirion, a 16th century manor house near Llanrwst, in the heart of North Wales and on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. They are one of our largest stockists of our materials in the North West, and offer courses in traditional building skills and consultancy services for the repair and restoration of traditional buildings. They have just completed their new shop and lecture room, and are installing a biomass heating system, enabling them to train throughout the year under cover. They are part of the European Future Heritage project bringing together Estonian, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Welsh partners to establish formal training in sustainable construction and the responsible retrofit of traditional buildings. In June they hosted the groups, along with Grwp Llandrillo Menai, demonstrating just how much Wales has to offer, in terms of working towards a sustainable future in construction. They are in the early stages of another exciting project in collaboration with the Tywi Centre in Llandeilo; The Heritage Bursary Scheme, offering training in building craft skills across Wales, which will run for two years. Fifteen apprentices will train each year to become skilled in masonry, carpentry and plastering. If you live or work in North Wales or are interested in becoming an apprentice, please visit The Natural Building Centre or visit our website www.thenaturalbuildingcentre.co.uk

Powys Business Finalists!

We at Tˆy-Mawr are delighted to be named as finalists in this year’s Powys Business Award in ‘the Development of New Markets’ category! We have already received awards and praise for our strong development of innovative and sustainable products, which has helped us move into different markets. As part of the award we will have short a film recorded at our distribution centre and new technical offices at Brecon enterprise park, which will showcase our expansion and innovative new products and systems for ecological and retrofit building. The results will be announced on the 3rd of October!

Farewell to Edward

In the summer, Edward Lewis, an architectural graduate from the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, leaves Tˆy-Mawr for pastures new in London. Edward has been working with us on technical drawings for our systems builds, development plans for our new unit as well as Tˆy-Mawr itself and Technical Sales. He will be greatly missed but we wish him all the very best in his new role with leading conservation architects - Donald Insall Associates.

To qualify for any funding, the measures you are putting in need to be recommended in a Green Deal Assessment Report prepared by an accredited Green Deal Adviser. A Green Deal Adviser will undertake an energy assessment of your home and ask to see your energy bills, to classify you as a low, medium or high user and predict your savings. Your advice report will spell out if it’s a good deal for you and you can decide if it’s the right time for you to make home energy improvements”. Tˆy-Mawr’s clients have started to benefit from Green Deal assistance using Tˆy-Mawr’s LABC registered insulation systems. Candace Brown from Llandeilo based Energy Saving Ltd said “Energy efficiency isn’t just about saving the planet, it can save you £100’s each year on your energy bills and just as importantly make your home a cosier place to live. The Green Deal gives you the opportunity to improve your property’s energy efficiency with no upfront costs and is paid back over a specified time via a charge on your existing electricity bill. You pay back only what you are predicted to save on bills, so there is no NET increase in cost, and your home will be more efficient.
