Cork Insulation System gets approval in UK! 1
In the UK, 1 in 4 of our homes has ‘solid’ walls, and around 45% of the heat lost in an un-insulated solid walled home is through the walls. In the drive towards energy efficiency and carbon savings, we are all being encouraged to insulate our homes. If all solid walls were insulated, there would be a massive carbon dioxide saving of 16,000,000 tonnes per annum - equivalent to the emissions from 2.7 million homes for a year. Solid walled buildings are often described as ‘hard to treat’ because they need more care; it is important not to simply add a high performance insulation material as solid walled buildings need to allow moisture to evaporate, therefore any insulation solution must work in the same way as the building, to avoid the problems associated with trapped moisture such as mold growth and condensation. Ty-Mawr ˆ is one of the UK market leaders in developing insulation solutions for solid wall buildings using natural materials and have recently received LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Registered details for the SecilVit External Wall Insulation system using cork boards and renders. Blaenavon Ironworks benefit from a Ty-Mawr ˆ Consultancy Visit
Following a Consultancy Site Visit by Ty-Mawr’s ˆ Heritage Asset Advisor, Sam Hale, accompanied by CADW and UK Restoration Services, the Stack Square cottages at the Blaenavon Ironworks World Heritage Site have benefited from being re-limewashed with our External Limewash, and their windows and doors have been painted with our Beeck’s Stand Oil paints. The area around Blaenavon is one of the finest examples in the world of a landscape created by mining and ironmaking in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The BBC television series, ‘Coal House’, was filmed on the site, and subsequently attracted thousands of new visitors to witness how difficult life was for working families there.
Cardigan Castle refurbishment
Courses
As well as our popular annual programme of lime courses, we have been delighted to deliver courses for CADW Stonemasons, for Women in Heritage Construction: Traditional Building Skills Bursary Scheme administered by the Tywi Centre, and a Heritage Skills Course for pupils and the local community in Pontypridd.
We were delighted to have supplied contractors Welsh Heritage Construction with Riven Oak Laths and traditional Fat Lime Plasters for the repairs. Cardigan Castle reopened to the local community on Tuesday 14th April 2015 following a four-year, £12m restoration. For 15 years the Ceredigion community campaigned to save the site which has been restored into a heritage attraction and events venue, with holiday accommodation and a restaurant. The site opened to the general public on Wednesday 15th April 2015.

GLAPOR
Since winning the LABC Cymru ‘Best Technical Innovation’ Award, sales of our Sublime® insulated limecrete floor have gone from strength to strength. A key component of the system is GLAPOR – recycled foamed glass (RFG) gravel. It has the ability to compact to a weight bearing surface and has the benefit of being sustainable in that it is manufactured using 100% recycled glass. Glapor’s foamed glass gravel is now an industry leader for compressive strength and insulation performance (0.78 W/mK) while providing drainage and protection from moisture due to its natural wicking barrier. For further details or to discuss your project, contact Jon Allen on 01874 611350 or via technical@lime org.uk.
BBA Certification for Intello Plus
This month we learned that the pro clima Intelligent Airtightness system, including the pro clima INTELLO PLUS intelligent airtightness and vapour control membrane, has met all the requirements set out by both the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and the NHBC. Ty-Mawr ˆ Lime’s Technical Director, Nigel Gervis, commented: “BBA is the UK’s major authority, offering approval and inspection services to manufacturers, installers, construction products and systems.” Nigel added: “It’s a high performance vapour retarding and airproofing system used to create an inner boundary for thermal insulation in roofs, walls, ceilings and floors. It provides maximum protection from structural damage and mould, even in complex or demanding structures such as impermeable flat/pitched roofs, green roofs and in extreme environments such as high mountainous regions.”
EcoPro Emulsion
We’re delighted to extend our Earthborn range. As an addition to Earthborn Clay Paints, we now stock Earthborn Ecopro Emulsion - a healthy, high performance, environmentally sound alternative to conventional emulsions. Its colour range features both traditional classics and sassy contemporaries. Check out www.lime.org.uk for details.
Cork Insulation System gets approval in UK! Continued from front cover Cork is natural and renewable (extracted from the cork-oak tree every 9 years), it offers a breathable insulating material, free from any chemicals, synthetic resins or carcinogenic materials. The cork’s low thermal conductivity (λ=0,040 W/m.K) offers a high energy efficiency, thus contributing to a reduced environmental impact as well as offering economic savings. This system extends the already successful LABC registered EWI range at Ty-Mawr ˆ using Homatherm Woodfibre Boards. This woodfibre board is manufactured using a modern dry process without glues; it’s vapour permeability, high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity have
all contributed to the success of this system in the UK. Call our technical sales advisers on 01874 611350 to discuss your insulation requirements.
“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” AA MILNE (Winnie the Pooh)
It’s not often that Ty-Mawr ˆ Lime, Winnie the Pooh, and Alice in Wonderland are mentioned in the same sentence. However, this summer, Ty-Mawr’s ˆ products featured in Royal Horticultural Society Award-winning gardens. Designer Lorna Davies won a Silver medal at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival where her ‘Alice in Wonderland’ creation used Ty-Mawr’s ˆ pigmented glaster®, which was rendered onto our Wood Wool Boards, which together provided a stunning backdrop for the entry. This was followed by a Gold medal for designer Anthea Guthrie at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show for her amazing creation, Winnie the Pooh Begins His Journey, where Ty-Mawr’s ˆ external limewash was used for AA Milne’s woodland shelter. Ty-Mawr’s ˆ Heritage Asset Advisor, Sam Hale, commented: “These are amazing achievements and our congratulations go to them both. It is always so nice to hear about the projects that our products are used on... it is the joy of the business really.”

Ty-Mawr ˆ Lime on target to make excellence a habit!
Ty-Mawr ˆ Lime Ltd’s green credentials were given a significant vote of confidence as it passed an Environmental Audit with flying colours. Ty-Mawr ˆ is proud to have achieved and operates under the BS8555 Environmental Management System, a British Standard introduced in 2003 to promote best environmental practices for SMEs. The system challenges businesses to develop environmental management systems with the aim of becoming more environmentally friendly. Managing Director, Joyce Gervis, said: “Caring for the Environment is one of our founding core principles and is at the heart of everything we do … it always has been and it always will be. This audit was an important milestone in the ongoing refinement of our working policies and practices. Passing a rigorous audit like this does not happen by chance but is down to a lot of hard work and dedication by the team here at Ty-Mawr.” ˆ Joyce concluded: “An increasing number of customers now expect their suppliers to be able to demonstrate a commitment to environmental protection, and this is an unequivocal objective endorsement of our progress and commitment towards that. It shows that we really do practice what we preach!”

New distribution network in the North Ty-Mawr ˆ products are now available through JT Dove Ltd, a major stockist of building materials. Established in 1869, in Newcastle and one of the city’s very earliest merchants to supply the building industry, JT Dove is a major stockist of Timber, Plumbing & Building Materials, with 15 outlets serving every sector of the construction industry in the North of England and Scotland.
The Directors and staff at Ty-Mawr ˆ Lime Ltd were delighted to receive a letter from the Dean of Leicester Cathedral expressing his thanks for the part Ty-Mawr ˆ played in an event of historical and international significance, namely the reinterment of King Richard III. Ty-Mawr’s ˆ involvement in this event started in 2014 when it was selected by the architects to Leicester Cathedral, van Heyningen & Haward, to design the floor to hold the tomb being prepared for the reinterment of the last Plantagenet King of England. Ty-Mawr’s ˆ original brief was to undertake the design, as well as the supply of the materials for our innovative Sublime® limecrete flooring system which was subsequently installed in the Cathedral as part of its £2.5m refurbishment works. The Very Reverend David Monteith explained that eyes of the world witnessed a historic series of events that will never be repeated. He said: “We have received numerous expressions of thanks and good wishes at the Cathedral, and on behalf of the city and county, relating to all aspects of the project, not least the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the physical works carried out in the Cathedral to make it all possible.”
