welcome Seeking Beauty Inside and Out Kristy has been part of the Florida Hospital board for the last year along with being a part of the Eden Spa Chair for two years (2011-2012). Her dedication and involvement with the building of Eden Spa Altamonte has made her a key person to its success.

In an intimate ceremony at Eden Spa Altamonte on May 9, Florida Hospital Altamonte’s Board Chair Kristy Dunlap was formally recognized for her gracious, personal donation to Eden Spa with a plaque honoring her parents, Dianne and Richard Zalack.

“I am encouraged by the commitment I see by every employee carrying out the Florida Hospital mission,” said Kristy.

JUNE 2013

Kristy’s mother Dianne, who is 69, has been battling ovarian cancer for the last 12 years further underscoring the importance of Eden’s mission.

|

1 Peter 3:3-4 refers to the fopllowing passage: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

|

“It’s not important what you see on the outside, all that matters is who you are on the inside…that is what truly makes a person beautiful,” Kristy explained. Eden’s Wig room gives a chance for women and men who are battling cancer to take a moment and examine their inner beauty and with a little help from Eden Spa staff they can have their outer beauty represent what is on the inside.”

Dianne lives in Ohio with her husband Richard. Kristy’s two sisters Susan Musal and Beth Henney live in Ohio as well and play a big part in the positive attitude her mother Dianne portrays on the daily basis. Even though Dianne has been battling this horrible disease for so long, she has been able to stay positive through it all and give encouragement to others dealing with the same challenge.

The plaque , which was placed outside the wig fitting room, reads: With Loving gratitude to Dianne and Richard Zalack for teaching His ways. 1 Peter 3:3-4

|

“I knew I wanted to honor my parents for about six months,” said Kristy, “but it took me about a month to come up with the wording for the plaque.”

She is one of the most generous women Florida Hospital Foundation has had the pleasure to work with and the entire foundation team is so grateful for her continuous contributions to the board. Kristy has helped Eden Spa create a loving, safe and caring atmosphere for all it’s patients especially those who are dealing with the devastating affects of cancer.

“With Loving gratitude...” that’s how the commemorative plaque honoring a mother and father begins. A physical representation of the indelible mark two loving parents have made and continue to make with their daughter.

Managing life with cancer can have many challenges. For many women the knowledge that they will lose some or most of their hair during chemotherapy causes added stress and worry. Understanding the process and being prepared for hair loss is important in facing this battle. The ďŹ rst step is to consider cutting your hair shorter. This will help make hair look fuller and ease the transition. You may want to start thinking about if you will want to wear a wig during this time. A wig can help increase self-esteem and regain conďŹ dence during treatment. Choosing the correct wig before or during treatment is the key. You must balance your hair color, style and price range to ďŹ nd the best one. For many women, wearing a wig during treatment depends on affordability. Be sure to ask your doctor for a wig prescription and contact your health insurance, as many private insurance companies will help cover the cost. You can also contact a local wig salon and see if they offer wig programs for cancer patients.

For appropriate hair color, consult with your oncologist or dermatologist before doing any chemical process. Also, contact a professional hair stylist who’s experienced with the delicate process and be sure to ask for organic, ammonia-free hair color. The goal is for your hair to grow strong and healthy. Have fun with your new look!

E D E N S PA e N E W S L E T T E R

As your hair grows back after chemotherapy, you will notice changes in texture and color.

Using organic hair products and brushing hair with a gentle brush will also keep your hair looking healthy. When washing newly grown hair, make sure to use a sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner. Dry hair by wrapping it in a towel to absorb moisture and to protect new hair follicles. Use vitamin-enriched volumizing foam to add volume and a light oil-treatment to enhance shine.

|

By visiting a wig or hair salon that sells wigs appropriate for cancer patients you can communicate with a certified wig fitter about the look you are seeking. If you want to keep it conservative, it’s best to match the wig to your natural color -or a shade lighter – as hair can lose its pigment in the process. If you want to try something different, short, asymmetrical and colorful wigs are fun and easy. The most important thing is to choose something comfortable that matches your style. This will help you portray yourself as the confident woman you are!

Your new hair will be fragile and very light. Once you can grasp hair between fingers, consider a trim. Eliminating the dry ends will help keep hair looking healthy and full.

i n TO U C H

There are two different types of hair used when creating wigs: synthetic and human. Synthetic hair is very lightweight and an inexpensive choice; however, it cannot handle heat and must be styled with a brush. Human hair is a bit heavier and more expensive, but can be styled with hot tools such as a blow dryer or flat iron to give a variety of looks.Try to choose a wig that will best fit your lifestyle and budget.

The Ancient Art of Reflexology Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes or pressure points in the feet and hands which correspond to every gland and organ of the body. Through the application of direct thumb and finger pressure on these reflexes without the use of lotions, creams or oils, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote natural function of the related areas of the body. Toxins such as lactic acid have a tendency to concentrate in the feet, leading to foot pain and fatigue. Reflexology massage assists to break up these areas of congestion, allowing for quicker and more effective recovery. Reflexology is not only therapeutic and can alleviate allergy symptoms, back pain and even chronic fatigue, but it also relaxes the entire body.

Experience this ancient art of healing” The concepts of reflexology therapy have been traced to pre-dynastic China…possibly as early as 3000 B.C. The fact that reflexology has withstood the test of time is a testament to the effectiveness of this treatment. Reflexology is extremely safe for most clients. However, a consultation with a therapist is recommended before any reflexology massage.
