People who have sensitive skin know that caring for it can be challenging. Having sensitive skin really means that the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, is hypersensitive to sun, dirt and other internal/external elements. Sensitive skin can be an inherited trait from your parents or it may be a related to your diet or fluid intake. Sensitive skin is something that you will have to pay special attention to, but that doesn’t mean you can’t maintain your active lifestyle. “The key to keeping healthy and younger looking skin is to apply sunscreen -- not only to your face and hands, but to all skin exposed to the sun every day,” said Eden Spa Altamonte Esthetician Veronica Jimenez. “By doing this your chances of damaging your skin decreases immensely.” Sensitive skin should be treated with care. Here are some recommended techniques for caring for sensitive skin from our Eden Spa Estheticians: Limit your shower time. Limit your skin exposed to hot water as possible. Hot water washes away the natural oils, and takes out the moisture from your skin. Be Gentle. Be careful when scrubbing your body. You need to keep in mind that the natural oils you’re scrubbing off your body are part of what keep your skin healthy.
Don’t Use Hand Soap. Be mindful of what soap you use. It is not recommended to use hand or bar soap products on your face because they can dry out and damage your skin. Limit your face washing. When you wash your face, you are essentially drying it out. Consult with your esthetician to make sure you are using the correct facial cleanser for your skin type. Avoid fragrance and color. These ingredients make soaps and products more appealing, but they can also be hazardous for those with sensitive skin. Moisturize. After you cleanse your skin the work isn’t done. You need to moisturize! Moisturizers sit on clean skin to form a protective barrier that helps your skin to not dehydrate.
Sensitive skin should be treated with care. Do not use regular soap on your face.

Living in the “Sunshine State” does have its perks -- but it also means we have to take extra precautions when it comes to our skin. With spring in full swing and summer just around the corner, it is important to talk about the risks of too much sun exposure. Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and more than 3.5 million skin cancers cases are diagnosed annually. Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidents of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. It is important to know what you can do to help prevent these painful situations from effecting you directly. Since it’s introduction in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher as one important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Statistics show that wearing at least 15 SPF should allow the average person to stay in the sun five times longer than they would without any sunscreen on. We would agree to this to an extent if sunscreen was permanently affixed to our skin but since sweat, water, clothing…etc. can interfere we strongly recommend re-applying every hour to ensure your skin’s safety. The sun’s rays are strongest from 11am to 3pm and depending on the person’s skin type, it takes

One week in the sun without protection can cause the same damage as being in the sun for a whole year wearing a sunscreen with SPF 15.”

Wearing sunscreen alone though is not enough to prevent harmful UV burns. Covering up with clothing, a hat and Ultra Violet (UV)-blocking sunglasses can also help. It is also important to examine your skin every month to ensure no noticeable changes in moles, freckles or other skin-spots.
Most people with a darker complexion produces a larger quantity of melanin which has a bit more natural sun protection versus people with “fair” skin. People with “fair” skin tend to produce more red melanin that has less protection against UV light. Sunscreen protects against the total amount of sun exposure and not just the duration of the time you are outside.

Pamper and Protect As many of us know, it is important to take care of our skin by keeping it hydrated and protecting it from the sun. Pevonia Hydrating Sunscreen is enriched with vitamins E, C, B, and has a SPF 30, which also protects your skin from the damaging effects of both UVA and UVB rays. Eden Spa skin care specialist recommend sunscreen that reflects, absorbs or scatters both kinds of ultraviolet radiation. This sunscreen also has “multiphase” protective action, where it not only hydrates and soothes dry skin, but it also protects our sensitive skin from premature aging on your face and body. The lotion leaves your skin feeling soft and silky without feeling greasy. Pevonia Hydrating Sunscreen is available in our retail boutique of Eden Spa. Please see spa staff for further details.
