Academic Life at St George’s
St George’s girls are enthusiastic and academically ambitious in the classroom and the environment we provide, with small class sizes and strong teacher pupil relationships, enables us to stretch the most able whilst allowing for individual support where required.
Our academic attainment continues to rise each year, spearheaded by high quality, diverse teaching, innovative educational technology and an effective tracking, monitoring and reporting system that allows our pupils to progress at every stage. Following on from two years without public exams, our Upper Sixth and Year 11 pupils embraced this year’s academic challenge and I was immensely proud of these girls and the two sets of excellent results they achieved.
Continuing the positive upwards trajectory of academic results in public exams at St George’s, our A-Level pupils achieved 100% A*-A in French, 57% A*-A in Maths and 100% A*-B in Geography, Chemistry, Politics, Drama and Fine Art among other impressive outcomes. In addition, nearly all the Sixth Form at St George’s undertake the EPQ, an independent research project highly regarded by universities, and this year’s results were outstanding with 71% awarded A*-A grades. Among the top performers, Head Girl, Milly secured her place at New College, Oxford to study PPE with excellent grades of A*AA. Deputy Head Girl Alice, also with A*AA, is studying Applied Sports Science at Edinburgh, and Performing Arts Scholar, Isabel achieved A*A*AB and is pursuing her studies in Musical Theatre.
The St George’s GCSE cohort exemplified the confidence and capability that is central to the school’s ethos as they prepared for their exams. A number of girls achieved all Grade 8s and 9s (the old A*) and many achieved grades above and beyond their baseline predictions, evidencing the value added for which St George’s is renowned. Strong GCSE grades have provided the girls with a firm foundation for their continuing journey into our flagship Sixth Form. It is a measure of the strength of our provision that nearly all of this year group chose to stay on at St George’s for their A Level studies and are joined by a large number of new day pupils and weekly, tailored and full boarders in the Lower Sixth.
Academic Snapshot
Although we operate a selective entry procedure here at St George’s, we deliberately encourage a broad range of abilities at the school. What we are looking for is potential, and we measure ourselves on the value that we add for our girls, enabling them to gain at least a grade higher in their GCSEs and A Levels than they would achieve without our specialist support, excellent teaching, small class sizes and extra clinics which we know really make a difference to our pupils’ results.
We test all our pupils when they enter the school which enables us to predict their likely GCSE grades and A Level in every subject based on their ability. Not every pupil who enters St George’s is a ten 9/8 grade at GCSE pupil. Most pupils are above national average ability, however, what we pride ourselves on is getting the best results we can in every subject and nurturing our pupils so that they have choices going forward onto A Level and when making their plans for university or other post 18 options and beyond.

In 2022, girls from St George’s secured a number of places at selective universities including Bristol, Durham, Edinburgh, Nottingham, Oxford and University College London amongst many others. 52% of the cohort achieved places at Russell Group institutions, with many others studying artistic disciplines such as fine art, fashion and visual effects.
Alongside Medicine at Newcastle and Economics and Management at Oxford, Georgians have applied to universities around the world gaining places at New York University, Iowa University, the University of Tokyo and Queen’s University (Canada) amongst a number of others.
Whilst university remains the choice of many St George’s leavers, we positively support girls who decide to pursue an alternative path. Whether taking a professional cookery course, finding a role in a legal firm, completing an apprenticeship or taking a gap year, we believe that all our leavers should be encouraged and enabled to follow their dreams.
Sixth Form tutors and leadership staff offer continuous support to pupils to ensure that their transition to life after St George’s is as successful and seamless as possible.
