ISI INSPECTION REPORT – NOVEMBER 2022
LIZ HEWER Head
When people tell me how much they have enjoyed visiting St George’s, I always ask them what it was that most impressed them. The historical buildings within a beautiful setting? The small class sizes? The ambition of the academic provision? The breadth of the co-curricular programme? The impressive theatre? The wonderful sports facilities? The professional and committed teachers? The busy and friendly atmosphere?
“Well yes,” they say. “All of those things. But it’s more than that; it’s the girls - there’s just something truly special about them”
So what is it about a St George’s pupil that is so recognisable and sets her apart as someone special, someone different, someone unique?
There is no such thing as a typical Georgian. While every pupil arrives here with her very own set of talents, we encourage each one to develop a genuine understanding of who she is and harness the qualities embedded within our ethos which, we believe, will prepare them thoroughly for adult life whatever future they choose.
You will always know a St George’s girl because she is CONFIDENT | CAPABLE | CONNECTED
CURRICULUM
At St George’s we are committed to giving our pupils a diverse academic and cultural experience that stimulates a lifelong interest in, and thirst for, learning.
Whilst our core syllabus is designed to be well balanced, flexible and academically challenging, we take great care to tailor teaching and learning to meet individual needs. Our small class sizes are one of our greatest assets, allowing our teachers to stretch the very brightest and provide plenty of support for those who need it, enabling every pupil to recognise their full potential. Expectations are, therefore, high for all of our pupils with each one encouraged and, most importantly, supported, to do their very best.
All of the staff here at St George’s are specialists in their academic fields and, collectively, strive for the very best for our pupils. By nurturing their love of learning, their academic potential and their individual talents, we successfully develop happy, well balanced and resilient young women; Confident, Capable and Connected to the world beyond our school.
YEAR 7
In Year 7 at St George’s, all girls study Art, Drama, English, Food and Nutrition, French, Geography, History, Computing, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Religious Studies, Science, Study Skills and Textiles. In addition, they have designated weekly curriculum time for PSHE and PE.
YEAR 8
In Year 8 the curriculum is extended to include Spanish. In addition, pupils may choose to study Classical Civilisation rather than Latin.
YEAR 9
In Year 9, pupils begin the GCSE Science curriculum.
ADDITIONAL
Pupils may study further languages as a paid extra. Languages available include Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian. There are also opportunities to have individual coaching in Equestrian, Polo, Strength and Conditioning and Tennis and St George’s works in collaboration with the Natalie Vinson School of Dance to deliver Ballet, Pilates and Tap, and group coaching in Pointe Work and Conditioning, Contemporary Dance, Acro and Modern/Street Dance. Additionally, Speech and Drama tuition is available as is tuition in a range of musical instruments.
7th
out of 344 schools for value added at GCSE using a Cambridge University measure
GCSE
While most pupils currently take nine or ten GCSE subjects, each pupil is advised individually as to the appropriate number to take, considering her strengths and weaknesses and any regular commitments to co-curricular activities, such as Sport, Music and Drama. We believe that it is better to aim for quality rather than quantity, as good grades are essential for university applications and future career opportunities.
All girls take English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (as two or three GCSEs), a Modern Foreign Language and a Humanity (chosen from Geography, History and Religious Studies). In addition, girls usually choose two further subjects: courses offered include a second Humanity, a second Modern Foreign Language, Art, Computer Science, Drama, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Latin, Music, Physical Education and Textiles. Girls also follow a course in Study Skills, PE and PSHE.
A LEVEL
Most girls study three A Level subjects in the Sixth Form and will also complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). A few girls will take a fourth subject. In most cases, this will be Further Mathematics or a second language in the case of a girl who is bilingual. In addition, the Sixth Form follow an Enrichment Programme based around four themes: British Values, Healthy Lives, Positive Relationships and Futures with workshops on Diversity built into the programme. They also continue with compulsory PE.
A Level subjects offered are: Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Drama, Economics, English Literature, Further Mathematics, Geography, History, History of Art, Mathematics, Modern Languages (French, Spanish and other languages by arrangement), Music, Photography, Physical Education, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Textiles.
St George’s is a place where girls flourish academically, creatively, physically and morally; where risks can be taken, lessons are learnt, and challenges are welcomed.
LIZ HEWER, HEAD
THE SCHOOL DAY
We fit so much into our School day at St George’s, boarders get up at 7.15am every weekday morning and breakfast is at 7.30am. After breakfast, pupils have 20 minutes during which they are expected to make their bed and tidy their dorm, before they meet their tutor for registration. Day pupils should arrive in school by 8.10am for morning registration at 8.15am.
Tea is served at 4pm, following which girls choose from the 70+ clubs currently on offer across the week. These include sports, arts, culture, service, music, academic extension and drama clubs. Prep finishes at staggered times depending on the Year group. Year 7 and Year 8 finish at 6.20pm, Year 9 at 6.35pm and Year 10 and Year 11 at 6.45pm. Day girls may leave after clubs on a Tuesday or a Wednesday and do their prep at home with permission from their Head of Year.
Day pupils may be collected when prep has finished. Supper is from 6.30pm or when prep is finished.
Bed times vary according to the year group, starting at 9.00pm.
CO-CURRICULAR & ENRICHMENT
70+
Co-curricular clubs activities each week
We believe that school does not end with the last lesson of the day and that enrichment out of the classroom is a very powerful part of our pupils’ education.
In addition to the regular clubs, academic clinics and educational trips on offer to the girls, St George’s offers a wealth of opportunities to broaden the girls’ cultural horizons.
Every girl performs in the House music competition, they collectively raise money and awareness for good causes including three charities for which the girls vote annually, as well as having the opportunity to work on their public speaking, compete for the school in sport and perform on stage.
Pupils also enjoy formal dinners and events with staff, parents and pupils from other schools. These are important rites of passage that young women cannot experience in a classroom, but are important to the development of their character. We value our links with other schools, including boys’ schools, and we are proud of the philanthropic work that our girls are increasingly doing within the local community.

We recognise that there are many aspects to consider when looking for the ‘right’ school for your family. We pride ourselves on taking a personalised approach to hosting information events which allow you the opportunity to get to know us properly and have your questions fully answered.
Depending on your daughter’s circumstances, attending one of our Open Mornings, termly Education Taster Days, or our Future Georgian Days would be an excellent way to become familiar with the School prior to assessment.
At all entry points, girls will be required to take examinations as indicated below. As part of the Entrance Assessments, girls will have a short interview with the Head or one of the Deputy Heads, and will be asked to prepare a two-minute talk on a subject of their choice.
Please note that the Mathematics/English and Science examinations are written papers, set and marked by St George’s. The CEM (Centre for Examination and Monitoring) is an online assessment consisting of Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Sample examination papers for English and Mathematics are available upon request. CEM do not provide any practice materials for pupils.
International applicants, for whom English is not their first language, will be required to sit a written EAL paper. For all applicants, school references, reports and any other additional information relevant to your daughter’s application will also be requested.

We are always happy to discuss alternative or additional routes with parents who would like their daughter to travel to school by bus.
Bus times and stops may change during the academic year based on pupil demand.
BOARDING
St George’s has a wide and flexible boarding offering, from those who weekly or full board through to those who choose to flexi board for a couple of nights a week.
The boarding houses at St George’s are a home-from-home and for many they are the place where strong friendships are built as girls live and learn together.
Boarding is a fundamental and special part of life at St George’s and has many benefits for your daughter. She will become more independent, resilient, self sufficient; she will experience the full extent of the provision on offer in the school community; she will have more time to concentrate on her work without the added time and pressure of a daily commute and, most importantly, she will learn to live with, get on with and respect other people and make great friends.
The boarding houses at St George’s are lively and welcoming. Each boarder is under the care of a Housemistress and a team of resident staff who live in the boarding house with the girls, take responsibility for their wellbeing and who create an environment that promotes a good work ethic and is caring, happy, fun and supportive.
MARKHAM HOUSE
The girls share study bedrooms and several relaxed communal areas. Year 7 and Year 8 pupils share one floor in the original Victorian house whilst the Year 9 dorms are located in the west wing of the house. The Year 10 pupils reside in an extended area of the property with purpose-built facilities.
Markham provides a supportive and relaxing home-from-home environment so that girls are able to enjoy their first years at St George’s with a listening ear and clear guidance.
Our location in Ascot means that our boarders are educated in a safe environment but are well connected and can easily go home or further afield for weekends and holidays.
TAILORED BOARDING
A unique boarding structure built to provide your daughter with an experience that truly suits her needs.
In addition to the traditional full boarding and day places, St George’s offers girls the option of boarding four, five or six nights a week, choosing the nights depending on her commitments in School. This is known as Tailored Boarding and encourages girls to get the best out of School and home life, while maintaining a stable core within the boarding community.
A weekly bus service to and from Central London departs from St George’s on Friday after School and returns to School on Sunday evening, allowing London boarders the opportunity to maximise time at home with their families over the weekend.
Day pupils can flexi board at a charge of £69.50 per night (for September 2024) when there is accommodation available. This is a good opportunity for girls to ease into the boarding experience, often choosing to stay one or two nights a week or when parents are away, or if they have late evening commitments. Often girls build up the number of boarding nights as they move up through the School in readiness to become a tailored (weekly) boarder.
WEEKEND ACTIVITIES
St George’s prides itself on the excellent range of activities on offer for the boarders in the evening and at weekends.
We aim to make the activities challenging and fun and to include important cultural experiences as well as informal days out and time to relax with friends after a busy week.
EVENING AND WEEKEND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
A range of sporting activities, such as use of the school fitness suite and swimming pool, horse riding lessons, arts and crafts led by our Artist in Residence as well as cookery. Additional prep time is also available for older girls.
External trips and activities take place every weekend in addition to sports fixtures. Each term your daughter may have the opportunity to take part in activities such as trips to the theatre, a water park, trampolining, laser quest or an escape room, to theme parks such as Thorpe Park or London Zoo, or to enjoy dance workshops, cinema trips, festive shopping or visits to the beach. We run a programme of social events and activities with Harrow School, Eton College and other local boys prep schools.
OVERSEAS ADMISSIONS
Pupils living overseas are invited to apply for entry to St George’s. For details of the
relevant assessment process please contact the Admissions Department.
All international pupils are required to sit St George’s entrance examinations at their current school, the local British Council office or at St George’s. All international pupils, for whom English is not their first language, will also be required to sit an EAL Assessment.
Prospective Sixth Form pupils may also be required to sit papers in the subjects they wish to study for A Level.
International pupils who do not have the required English Language qualifications for entry into a British university will be required to study for the IELTS examination in the Sixth Form.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Specialist Scholarships are designed to reward excellence and to celebrate exceptional talent.
In recognition of their ability and the added value they are expected to bring to school life, Scholars are offered a reduction in the tuition fees.
St George’s also awards Academic Scholarships to girls who excel across several subjects and who show evidence of all round academic excellence. This is assessed solely on entrance examination performance at 11+ and by supplementary papers at 13+ (English, Maths and a general paper).
All Scholarships are conditional on a girl’s satisfactory conduct and contribution to the school and are worth up to 10% of tuition fees. In exceptional cases, an Exhibition worth up to 5% of tuition fees may be awarded to girls with talent in one or more of the areas outlined.
Girls awarded scholarships at 11+ and 13+ will remain scholars into the Sixth Form subject to maintaining their level of performance and consistently contributing to School life in the particular area of their award, in accordance with our Scholarship terms and conditions.
We encourage parents of Scholars who anticipate that they may experience difficulty in meeting the balance of the tuition fees to apply at the same time for one of the School’s means-tested Bursaries when they register their daughter.
