contemporary gigs
live at St George’s Jan – Apr 2011 0845 40 24 001 stgeorgesbristol.co.uk
This season sees a spectacular line up of contemporary music at St George’s. We have two great new series curated by Phil Johnson (music and arts writer for The Independent) – TAKE THE COLTRANE and CAGE 99 – and a host of top name artists spanning jazz, folk and world music, all playing in one of the city’s most prized and intimate music spaces. Our jazz programme boasts a number of coups, including the appearance of saxophonist Joe Lovano (Tue 29 Mar, page 17) and his acclaimed band US Five as part of our take the coltrane series. We also have ‘Tapestry Unravelled’, Christine Tobin and Liam Noble’s deeply emotional and highly entertaining tribute to Carole King’s multi-million selling album (Thu 10 Feb, page 11), and the ECM duo of Ralph Towner and Paolo Fresu (Thu 3 Mar, page 15), who play with such pure, unforced beauty that the match of music and setting could not be bettered.
John ‘Trane’ Coltrane (1926 – 1967) Perhaps the most influential saxophonist of all time, John Coltrane produced an intensely soulful and spiritual sound that reached way beyond the jazz audience to become one of the defining artistic statements of the twentieth century.
“Trane was the loudest, fastest saxophonist I’ve ever heard ... it was like he was possessed when he put that horn in his mouth. He was so passionate – fierce – and yet so quiet and gentle when he wasn’t playing.”
Meanwhile our cage 99 series (Sun 17 – Tue 19 Apr, page 02) offers a rare opportunity to hear live performances of some of the major works of the visionary John Cage, time-bender, rulebreaker, and one of the most influential composers of our time. And with the likes of legendary composer Jimmy Webb (Wed 2 Feb, page 10) and the iconic three-day Bristol Acoustic Music Festival (Fri 14 – Sun 16 Jan, page 07) this is definitely the place to be for music aficionados this season – hope to see you here. Take The Coltrane
Our migrations world music series mixes big stars and cult attractions, with a special focus on singers. It includes an audience with the great superstar of Senegal, Baaba Maal (Mon 21 Mar, page 16); the astonishing Occitan group from Marseille, Lo Còr De La Plana (Thu 24 Feb, page 13), and the wild, visceral and deeply moving massed voices of the Creole Choir of Cuba (Tue 1 Feb, page 09).
St George’s landmark 50th anniversary celebration of John Coltrane’s signing to the revered Impulse! label – which led to one of the greatest sequences in the history of recorded music – offers a real in-depth look at various aspects of Coltrane’s legacy, and opens with Andy Sheppard’s shimmering interpretation of Coltrane’s classic album ‘Ballads’ (Thu 13 Jan, page 06).
take the coltrane continues with an incredible double bill of the Manchesterbased Matthew Halsall and Nat Birchall Quintets (Thu 27 Jan, page 08), whose recent albums on the Gondwana label have wowed critics with their contemporary update on Coltrane’s spiritual Impulse! sound; the Mercury/ MOBO award-winning saxophone colossus Denys Baptiste brings his incandescent post-Coltrane power to ‘A Love Supreme’ (Thu 17 Feb, page 12); and the world’s premiere post bop jazz saxophonist, Joe ‘cat in the hat’ Lovano, lends his endlessly entertaining artistic fire to an adventurous, kaleidoscopic session (Tue 29 Mar, page 17).

Andy Sheppard residency The man who has emerged as one of Britain’s most lyrical and consistently inventive saxophonists was introduced to the music of John Coltrane at the age of 19 and immediately went out and bought his own saxophone. Now, star saxophonist Andy Sheppard returns to St George’s as artist-in-residence for the next three seasons, kicking off take the coltrane in January before launching into a series of stunning collaborations with bass powerhouses Arild Andersen and Michel Benita and Polar Bear’s down-toearth mystic drummer Seb Rochford. ‘ Eclectic, compulsively tuneful, his playing casts a powerful spell.’ THE INDEPENDENT

Cage 99 The John Cage Celebration One of the leading avant-garde composers of the twentieth century, John Cage was a minimalist enchanted with sound, whose works have long been a driving force in the world of music, dance and visual art. A pioneer of the prepared piano and of chance as a compositional tool (often using a computer-generated random number programme similar to the ancient Chinese oracle, the ‘I Ching’), Cage’s music, and ideas about music, are extraordinary. The 100th anniversary of Cage’s birth falls in 2012, so with a ‘purposeful purposeless’ beloved of Cage himself, St George’s steps ahead of the game with cage 99. A three-day festival on succeeding days in April, cage 99 starts (Sun 17 Apr, page 20) with the conductor Charles Hazlewood’s half-marathon version (420 repeats in 10 hours) of Erik Satie’s epic ‘Vexations’ – the first ever ‘loop’ composition – originally staged by Cage in New York in 1963, when the Velvet Underground’s John Cale was one of the pianists. An all-day happening, the beautiful, ambientfriendly music forms the decorative backdrop to the passing of time itself, as the light changes, the earth turns 02 Box Office 0845 40 24 001

Learn With Us Children’s and Family Concerts live at St George’s and day turns to night. Played by a relay team of fifteen pianists including surprise guest stars from pop, jazz and the classical world, this is Bristol’s ‘new music’ event of the year. ‘Vexations’ is followed (Mon 18 Apr, page 21) by the foremost Cage pianist Margaret Leng Tan in a programme of the rarely performed early masterpiece ‘Four Walls’ – a work heavily influenced by Satie – as well as the playful ‘Suite for Toy Piano’ and ‘Dream’. cage 99 closes on Tuesday 19 April (page 22) with a glimpse of the later, philosophical and Zen-inspired Cage in the text-with-music piece ‘Indeterminacy’ presented by the pianists Tania Chen and Steve Beresford with the celebrated comedian and writer Stewart Lee (‘Jerry Springer: The Opera’). There will also be a lively supporting programme of talks, events and films exploring other aspects of Cage’s wideranging interests (see website for details).

Andy Sheppard / Dan Moore Trio Take The Coltrane 01 Ballads
Bristol Acoustic Music Festival 2011
As well as creating the tumultuous, ‘sheets of sound’ approach that defined tenor and soprano sax playing for every generation that followed, John Coltrane was also a killer ballads player, as ‘Naima’ and the famous Impulse! album, ‘Ballads’, remind us. Coltrane’s mix of impassioned hardblowing and supremely tender lyricism inspired virtuoso Andy Sheppard to take up the saxophone. Here, he brings one of the most recognisable sax sounds in British jazz to the first of the take the coltrane series, a hypnotic exploration of ‘Trane’s ballad repertoire. Joined by a superb group of Bristol stalwarts, the impassioned pianist Dan Moore, Thad Kelly on double bass, and powerful drummer Daisy Palmer, Andy brings a sensitive creativity to Coltrane’s glittering gems.
A triumphant return to St George’s for Bristol’s iconic, three-day acoustic music festival celebrating the breadth and diversity of Bristol’s unplugged music scene, with a mesmerising programme, from gently seductive folk-pop melodrama to subversively spellbinding drum and brass soundscapes, and shimmering performances by Barry Walsh, Isabelle, Bashema, Moscow Drug Club (Fri 14 from 7pm); Vapor, Colin Smith, the Trish Brown Band,
Gaz Brookfield, Keith Warmington, Owl in the Sun, Parrington Jackson, Nuala, Beth Porter, The Cedar (Sat 15 from 1pm); Bath Community Big Band, Voice of Choice Winners, Suzy Condrad, Troubadour Hook, Back to the Lake, Something of the Night, The Duckworths, Eyebrow, Roger Tarry and Daisy Chapman (Sun 16 from 12noon). ‘Back with another world of wonders celebrating just what a brilliantly talented place Bristol is.’ VENUE MAGAZINE For full programme and running times please visit: stgeorgesbristol.co.uk £7 day tickets Promoted by Jelli Records and TinHut. A big hit at last year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival, this is singer Christine Tobin and pianist Liam Noble’s bare-bones reworking of Carole King’s 25 million-selling 1971 ‘Tapestry’ album, a much-loved staple of the singer-songwriter era. Reflecting on the recent death of her older sister, Deirdre, who first introduced her to the original songs, Christine was moved to return to the material and reinterpret it anew as a deep, intensely emotional suite
carried by her voice and Liam Noble’s stark yet subtle piano arrangements alone. Their versions of ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘Beautiful’, ‘Home Again’, ‘It’s Too Late’ and the rest evoke a very powerful response. It was also extremely popular, selling an estimated half a million copies by 1970. CONNECTING JAZZ A MUSIC TALK BY JONATHAN JAMES For many, jazz is one of life’s greatest gifts: the coolest, freest and deepest music humans have ever made. Others dwell in disorientated confusion as to its unusual sounds and techniques.
Occitan is the ancient language of Provence, once indigenous to much of southern France and exported to overseas colonies where it continues to evolve. WOMAD favourites Lo Còr De La Plana are six vocalists and percussionists
from Marseille who specialise in wildly exuberant Occitan songs and chants, and whose attitude to their lingua franca is less a museum-style, folkloric recreation of the past than an exciting amalgamation of the ancient and the modern, where Arabic, African and Gypsy influences meet Gregorian chant and renaissance polyphony. £14 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

Ralph Towner / Paolo Fresu ‘Chiaroscuro’ (ECM) by the duo of acoustic guitarist Ralph Towner and Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, is one of the great cult albums of recent years, creating its own sound-world of quiet, contemplative and slightly melancholy beauty in the tradition of Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny’s ‘Beyond the Missouri Sky’. Towner, who founded his band Oregon 40 years ago, and has been recording for ECM for almost as long, is the consummately tasteful jazz guitar player, favouring classical and 12-string
acoustic guitars (plus, on ‘Chiaroscuro’, baritone guitar) and writing delicate, impressionistic tunes that recall the pianist Bill Evans, a great influence. Fresu, who plays with Andy Sheppard in Carla Bley’s Lost Chords group, has been the wunderkind of European jazz for years now, his style on trumpet and flugelhorn frequently compared to both Chet Baker and Miles Davis. ‘Fresu’s Miles Davis-like trumpet opens new windows on Towner’s delicate songs.’ the guardian / ‘Beautifully spare and mournful.’ the independent £21 Promoted by St George’s Bristol. Baaba Maal One of Africa’s greatest voices, the Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal is on brilliant live form, his supercharged sets pushing back the boundaries of West African music: weaving the earthy ebb and flow of acoustic, gently exquisite, traditional griot music with high-kicking Mbalax pop and brilliantly infectious Afro-western dance hybrids.
‘ Baaba Maal’s rapturous noise is music at its very best … as beautiful, as glorious and as joyous as any that you will hear.’ the daily telegraph
With the magnetic Maal tirelessly circling the stage in priestly robes, his magisterial Fulani vocals – by turns intimate, passionate and rousing – testify over the tight, rhythmic ranks of his exhilarating and unstoppable band, and envelop all in their swoops and arcs of sound. This is the African-music event of the year, the intimate atmosphere of St George’s amplifying the party-feel just as it does the insistent warmth and irresistible force of the music. baabamaal.tv £23; £19; £13 Promoted by St George’s Bristol.

JOE LOVANO US FIVE TAKE THE COLTRANE 04 Described by the New York Times as ‘one of the greatest musicians in jazz history’, saxophonist Joe Lovano has been the world’s leading figure on his instrument for two decades now, and a true heir to his hero John Coltrane. But on his latest album for Blue Note, ‘Folk Art’ (his 21st for the label!) with a brand new quintet, US Five, Lovano has also re-established his position as the most innovative and adventurous leader in jazz today. With influences as varied as Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and Cameroonian saxman Manu Dibango, Lovano and his young, very hot, band (which features two drummers) play some of the most rhythmically intense music you will ever hear. The opportunity to see them do this live, in Bristol, is a jazz event of huge proportions: it’s an audience with the absolute king, at the absolute top of his form, playing with the hottest new band on the planet.

Based in Chennai, a southern city of the state of Tamilnadu, India, the Madras Quartet transcends the Western classical repertoire with creative explorations of Carnatic ragas arranged for string quartet, capturing Indian music’s meditative spirit and producing music that is astonishing, accessible, visionary and mesmerizing. Erik Satie’s Vexations
Margaret Leng Tan The Art of the Toy Piano / Dream / Four Walls
11am: pre-concert talk by Charles Hazlewood 12noon onwards: half-marathon performance (420 repeats)
Margaret Leng Tan piano, voice, toy piano
Charles Hazlewood writes: “Beethoven was wrong!” So exclaimed John Cage in 1952, in his obsession that Beethoven had misled music by creating goal-oriented harmonic structures, instead of letting it play out, gesture by gesture. This determined rejection of all that was sweet, known and reasonable in music led Cage in 1963 to stage what is now an iconic moment in musical history: a complete performance of Erik Satie’s ‘Vexations’, a short piano piece to be repeated exactly 840 times. The audience included Andy Warhol, and actor Karl Schenzer who exclaimed at the end, “Time? What is time?” ‘Vexations’ is a unique experience, the equivalent to a long vigil or meditation. A completely different way of experiencing music. As Satie states in the score, the pianist must prepare “in advance, and in the utmost silence, through serious immobilities”. 20 Box Office 0845 40 24 001
Come to St George’s for a unique musical enlightenment, an experiment orchestrated by Satie, and seized upon by Cage as The New Testament, or perhaps as The Original Testament: “We live in a time not of mainstream, but of many streams, or even, if you insist upon a river of time, that we have come to delta, maybe even beyond delta to an ocean which is going back to the skies”.
The music for ‘Four Walls’ (1944) was written for a ‘dance play’ in two acts by Merce Cunningham. Renowned John Cage pianist Margaret Leng Tan gave the first complete performance of this work in New York in 1985 and its UK premiere at the 1989 Huddersfield Festival, where the Yorkshire Post called it the ‘revelation of a masterpiece’. A powerful, hour-long exploration of the disturbed mind using only the white keys of the piano, ‘Four Walls’ embodies Cage’s innovative use of silence, repetition and processes of gradual change. It is also strikingly beautiful. Margaret Leng Tan precedes her performance of ‘Four Walls’ with an opening set in which she

talks about her friendship with John Cage and some of the background to his work, and performs ‘Suite for Toy Piano’ (1948), a toy piano arrangement of ‘Dream’, Cage’s exploration of silence ‘4.33’ and ‘Water Music’. Margaret Leng Tan, described as ‘the queen of the toy piano’ by the New York Times, was born in Singapore and studied at the Juilliard School in New York, where she was the first female student to earn a doctorate. An interest in exploring the overlaps between the music of Asia and the West led her to John Cage, whom she met in 1981. They remained in close collaboration until his death in 1992. margaretlengtan. com £15 Promoted by St George’s Bristol

Tania Chen Steve Beresford Stewart Lee Indeterminacy Tania Chen piano Steve Beresford piano Stewart Lee storyteller Writer, performer and comedian Stewart Lee is perhaps best known for his work in sketch and stand-up comedy, and for co-writing and directing the acclaimed stage show ‘Jerry Springer: The Opera’. Lee is also a lover of experimental music, and he here joins fearless contemporary pianists Steve Beresford and Tania Chen for a performance of John Cage’s text and sound piece ‘Indeterminacy’.
‘ A wonderfully curious way to hear stories.’ stereophile
‘Indeterminacy’ was originally recorded in 1959, with David Tudor playing the piano and John Cage reading aloud fragments from 90 stories chosen at random. Tonight’s concert consists of two halves. In the first, Beresford and Chen will perform selections from Cage’s music for piano, illustrating the composer’s pioneering use of nonstandard instruments and chance procedures. In the second half, they take David Tudor’s role to accompany the ‘Indeterminacy’ texts as read by Lee. This is a performance which disorientates and transfixes an audience, and leaves an impression which is very hard to describe. “There’s no word for it”, says Steve Beresford, “Which is why it’s worth doing.” taniapiano.com / stewartlee.co.uk £13

As a registered charity, without this support we simply could not put on the breadth and quality of music that our audiences enjoy. We could not run our award-winning Education and Community Programmes which are encouraging new generations to enjoy and make music.
