Z.E.N. Trio - Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Tue 3 Oct | 7.30pm Emotion recollected in tranquillity: the young Brahms was tormented by an impossible love. Years later, he recrafted his Opus 8 into a trio which distils youthful ardour into music of soul-shaking power and profound beauty. Combined with the playful wit of Joseph Haydn and the folk inspired dances of Brahms’ great friend Dvořák, it’s an impressive Liverpool debut for the all-star Z.E.N. Trio – of which two members will each perform a concerto with the Orchestra this season. Where: The Concert Room

Clark Rundell conductor

‘Tis the gift to be simple: when Aaron Copland put an old Shaker hymn at the climax of Appalachian Spring, he’d stumbled on something fundamental about being American. Not that “simple” means unsophisticated: Steve Reich, Andrew Norman and Nico Muhly all show that minimal means can lead to thrillingly unexpected ends – and even bridge the Atlantic.

Where: The Concert Room

That’s the starting point, vibrant with potential, for a concert that, like everything Ensemble 10/10 does, is all about new musical worlds – which tonight means a premiere from the young Liverpool composer Richard Miller, our second Christopher Brooks Composition Prize winner, in association with the Rushworth Foundation.

Performed by Gerald Dickens – Actor and Great Great Grandson of Charles Dickens presents two short stories. The Signalman is a fabulously atmospheric ghost story. In a deep, damp railway cutting a lonely signalman tells his terrible tale to a complete stranger. The signal box, the tunnel, even the telegraph wires seem to haunt him at every turn Doctor Marigold (one of Charles› most popular performances during his reading tours) is a market cheapjack, addressing the audience directly with his fast-paced sales patter. As he talks, he begins to tell his life story, which is at once funny, tragic, heart breaking, uplifting and ultimately life affirming.

Dave Spikey – Juggling on a Motorbike Fri 1 Dec | 8pm Dave had been working in the NHS for 19 years as a Biomedical Scientist when in 1987 someone uttered the immortal words,“You’re really funny, you should be a comedian” and for some reason, he took them seriously!! Only a few short months later he was crowned the winner of the national talent show “Stairway to the Stars”. Larry Grayson, one of the judges, told him that it was a close run thing on the night but what clinched the award for Dave was his routine about a juggler on a motorbike. Fast forward 13 years (Is that possible?) to Friday 13th October 2000 , the day Dave switched off his microscope for good and found himself, the following Monday, sitting on rain swept local car park dressed as a giant berry!! So now in 2017 he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his comedy career.
