Ancient Beginnings and Roman Influence

The story of Bordeaux wine begins in the Roman era, around 60 BC, when the Romans first planted vineyards in the Bordeaux region to produce wine for their soldiers and local settlers. Middle Ages: The English Influence

A significant turn in Bordeaux’s wine history came in 1152 when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry Plantagenet, who shortly became King Henry II of England. This union gave the English Royal Court a taste for Bordeaux wine, leading to a period known as “The English Reign” over Bordeaux. During this time, from 1154 to 1453, Bordeaux wine became highly popular in England, known affectionately as “claret”. The region’s wines were given privileges and exemptions from duties, encouraging extensive export that created a boom in Bordeaux’s economy and wine production.

17th Century: The Birth of Châteaux

The 17th century marked the emergence of the great châteaux of Bordeaux. Wine merchants began investing in vineyards, and the concept of a wine estate, or château, became integral to Bordeaux’s wine culture. This period also saw the development of techniques such as barrel aging, which significantly improved the quality of the wine.

18th Century: Classification and Expansion

By the 18th century, Bordeaux had firmly established its reputation for producing high-quality wines, leading to a structured trade system. The classification of Bordeaux wines, which began un-

officially through brokers’ lists, laid the foundation for the official 1855 Classification, introduced at the request of Emperor Napoleon III for the Paris Exposition. This system, which categorized wines based on prices and quality, still influences the Bordeaux wine market.

19th Century: Phylloxera and Innovation

The late 19th century brought devastation to Bordeaux through the phylloxera epidemic, a pest that killed many vineyards. The solution—grafting European vine varieties onto American rootstock resistant to the pest—saved the industry but also changed the viticultural landscape of Bordeaux. This period also led to significant scientific advancements in wine production and pest management.

20th Century to Present: Modernization and Global Recognition

The 20th century was a time of modernization for Bordeaux wine.
