LETTER So, here we are in the home stretch of 2018. As I reflect on the past year, I’m overflowing with gratitude for the beautiful relationships that have flowed into my life and throughout the pages of this magazine. I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some truly remarkable individuals who have transparently shared their journeys and invaluable life lessons. Each story is a testament that resistance is necessary for growth, and perseverance is key to success. That is what Women with Ambition magazine is all about; A tribute to female entrepreneurs to celebrate their passion and purpose, and to honour the organic growth of their success. If there’s one thing that these women have in common, it’s that they worked hard to make their dreams happen. They didn’t settle into comfort by remaining on one path, but instead, detoured many times along the way until they reached their desired destination. That is the beauty of following your dreams; it’s what you learn along the way that ultimately shapes your future. This issue is not just about honouring the women with ambition, but also the men that stand behind and beside them to help make it all possible. I’m thrilled to introduce our newest addition, #COUPLEGOALS. A tribute to those oh-so incredible couples who have gone through the struggles and triumphs, have grown together both personally and professionally, and are raising families and businesses along the way while working endlessly towards a shared vision. You can look forward to this celebratory feature making an on-going appearance in upcoming issues of WWA, along with many new and exciting things to come! Cheers to a fabulous 2018 and I look forward to celebrating all that the new year will bring! With love,
LISA AQUILINA Editor-In-Chief of Women with Ambition® and Founder of Stilettos and a Stroller

INTRODUCTION She has been on the cover of countless magazines covers, filled pages within global publications with fitness routines and advice, and has been featured time and time again on television shows like The Social, Breakfast Television, and The Morning Show. She is a mother to four boys, a former police officer, a transformational coach, and one of the most inspiring women I’ve ever met. I’m honoured to dedicate this issue to the remarkable Nichelle Laus. A woman who exemplifies strength, perseverance, and compassion, with an insatiable dedication to helping people create sustainable change both inside and out. I feel privileged to share her story; a very emotional and transparent journey about pushing through the resistance, overcoming traumatic times, and her endless dedication to creating positive change. 4
Who is Nichelle Laus and what is your brand and business? I am a health and fitness transformation specialist. My business began in 2005 and is primarily an online service that offers transformation packages, as well as competition packages that cater to women. All of my programs are designed and tailored to the individual needs of my clients whether they are an athlete, fitness competitor, mother, or just someone who is serious about creating sustainable change and leading a more fit and healthier lifestyle. Being a mom of four and having gone through so much with my own body, I wanted to create programs that offer both mind and body transformations. It’s about feeling good and comfortable in your own skin throughout the entire journey.
What inspired you to create your brand? What is your why? I really stand for women empowerment. I want to be a leader in this industry and show women that if they apply themselves and put in the work, they can achieve their goals no matter the obstacles. I have four kids, multiple businesses, and a crazy lifestyle. I am a mother, wife, athlete, former police officer, and business owner. I know what it’s like to juggle it all and still make yourself a priority. I also know what it’s like to work and grow through some of the most difficult and traumatic experiences and come out on the other side stronger. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

My “why” started when I was very young, but like most things, it didn’t unfold and really make sense until later on in my life. The reason I am the way that I am and have this desire to pay it forward is that when I was a kid, I was sexually abused for seven years by my step-father. I never said a word to anyone, and as a result, I had a very terrible childhood. When I turned 14 years old, I stopped the cycle and finally said, “This is enough.” At this point in my life, my innocence had been compromised, and I was struggling with an assortment of emotions like guilt, anger, and shame. It was also very difficult because once the story became public knowledge, I was bullied at school and talked about daily and we all know how hard those teenage years are to begin with. I had to go to court several times and deal with the backlash, and so did my mom, so I desperately needed an outlet to help me cope with all of the stress, hurt and humiliation. In my vulnerable state, I could’ve turned to unhealthy choices such as drugs or alcohol, but instead, I turned to martial arts. At 16 yrs old, I decided to take up boxing and had no idea my entire life would change the minute I walked through that door. I literally fought my way through all of the emotions, and it was a massive turning and healing point in my life. It completely changed my life, and to this day, I could never let go of that martial arts mindset because it’s in my blood. Not only did I become a very strong and skillful boxer, the sport itself literally saved my life. Eventually, I left Montreal to become a Police Officer in Ontario. I wanted to become a cop because they helped me so much during the worst time in my life and I wanted to give back and help as many people as I could. I continued boxing and loved being a Police Officer, however I never shared my story for years until I began working with schools. Through my presentations, I began to share more and more of my personal story, and as a result, many of these young girls who were between the ages of 14 and 16 began opening up about their similar experiences. 6
I was able to give back and help in ways that I never imagined. I wasn’t just the “bad-ass” police officer anymore; I was someone they could relate to and was helping individuals who have been sexually abused come out of their shell and deal with their experiences. It was healing for them, and it was healing for me. I began sharing my story in my fitness boot-camps and helping more and more women overcome their painful pasts or current circumstances and use fitness as a healthy, therapeutic outlet. I want to get as big as I can - but not because of the success, because I want to be able to help as many people as possible overcome whatever it is that’s going on inside. I want to help transform lives mentally, physically and emotionally. I didn’t allow what happened to define me, and neither do you. You can overcome whatever it is that you’re going through if you want it bad enough, and I want to help make that possible.
What inspired you to explore a career in fitness? I love the competitiveness – not necessarily with others but with myself. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and because boxing is a very individual sport, I am very used to be committed and fiercely focused on my own mental and physical goals and gains. Once I started having children, I transitioned from kickboxing to fitness competitions because it was easier in the sense that it allowed me to train on my own time. It had a goal and a competition component to it, and it was suitable for my new lifestyle.
Tell us more about your fitness and coaching programs. There’s the Competition side and the Transformation side. The Competition side is a more intense training program that is very specific to competition conditioning, stage presentation, and etiquette. This program is designed for fitness competitors.
I want to be able to help as many people as possible overcome whatever it is that’s going on inside.

The Transformation side is made up of three components:
begin with a consultation to ensure that you connect well and feel compatible.
1. 12-week downloadable transformation program that includes 6 generic meal plans and 3 generic training routines designed to build lean muscle and burn fat. This program is ideal for those who are self-motivated and are looking for professional guidance without direct coaching.
Another key element is mindset. If you want to begin a health and fitness journey, you need to start by making the decision to change because once you’ve decided, you are already on the right path.
2. 12-week program customized to your specific needs which includes check-ins, meal plans, training routines, and online guidance and coaching. I’m with you every step of the way! 3. The 8 weeks to fabuLAUS package includes all of the above and more! This is a group program designed to accommodate 8-10 women who go through the journey together. There is a start and finish date for maximum goal setting, private boot camps and coaching, complete with a celebratory photoshoot at the end that includes hair & makeup and three different photo looks. Once my clients have completed their program of choice, I offer maintenance programs on a month to month basis for on-going structure and support. In addition to meal plans and training routines, these programs offer empowerment and provide a community for women to connect and relate to one another. I implement strategies from my background in policing, martial arts and fitness and help you apply the fighter-mindset to your everyday life to help you push through the resistance – whatever that may be both in life and in fitness – and get to the other side.
What advice would you give to those who are just starting their health and fitness journey? Align yourself with an experienced industry professional and do your research. Check out their roster, testimonials, before and afters, website, etc. You want to align yourself with someone who is credible and loves what they do. And you should always 8
As with most things, you get what you pay for so make sure that you are investing in yourself properly and choosing quality over quantity always. Don’t just go for what’s cheap – go for what promises results and sustainable change.
What is your motivation? Who and what inspires you to keep moving forward? My kids! (Biggest happy face ever!)
If you could change anything about your business journey so far, what would it be? What would you have done differently? Nothing, I wouldn’t change a thing. The growth of my business happened so unexpectedly and very organically. Everything that I’ve been through has led me to where I am today, and I am very grateful for that.
What is the most surprising thing you learned throughout your career in the fitness industry? That it’s not just about fitness - it’s truly about life experience on so many levels. There are so many things I have learned along the way about myself, others, business, and the industry as a whole. It was very surprising to see how many people are so quick to judge or to join you in your success but never be there when you fall. The lack of authenticity is another big one. There are so many people hiding behind titles and pretending to be someone they’re not, both personally and professionally. So, I choose to stay focused on who I am and on my business. You do you, and I’ll do me.
How do you deal with negativity, obstacles, and lack of motivation?
never reach your goal. Detour along the way, but get there.
I like to think of myself as a very happy person. I’m rarely ever in a bad mood. If I have an off moment, I don’t allow it to last long. I don’t settle for staying stuck in a negative state – it doesn’t serve me or the people around me. If the negativity is coming from outside sources, it’s typically something on “them.” I don’t entertain or let it affect me. If the negativity is coming from my clients in terms of self-doubt, I always get them to see the positive in their progress or help them get to the root of why they are feeling that way. I always try to come from a place of compassion.
On the days that I feel unmotivated, I lean on Dave or my best friend for that extra kick in the butt. But mostly, motivated or not, I just do it anyway because I would be more disappointed in myself if I didn’t. With my team of clients, I like to send out a positive note or Facebook live video to help them stay motivated, and I’m always receiving feedback saying, “Thanks so much, I really needed that today!” We all do. So, I try to do the same for myself and let that athletic mindset kick in to talk myself through it.
I honestly don’t allow obstacles to get in my way. I actually have a quote hung in my gym that says, “Focus on your goals, not the obstacles.” I wrote this quote because I’ve been presented with so many obstacles in my life and made the decision to move forward in spite of them. You have to, no matter what the obstacle is, otherwise you will
With four boys and two businesses of your own, how do you balance being a mompreneur? Honestly, family first. For example, during the week, nothing else starts before 10 a.m because I’m getting the boys ready for school and they are the priority. After that, I fit in as much work as I can until 2:30 p.m and then I pick up the boys. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018
9
The rest of the night is dedicated to family time and their activities, and once the kids are asleep, I focus back on work. It’s all about structure, creating healthy boundaries, and prioritizing what matters most.
What advice do you have for fellow #mombosses? Structure is very important but so is keeping an open mind that things can change at any given moment. I could have a perfectly planned day and then get a call from the school that one of the kids got hurt or is sick so then the entire day changes. You have to be super flexible no matter what so that you’re prepared for change if need be. That’s 10
why I’ve designed my businesses the way I have; to allow for flexibility and a schedule that is suitable and realistic to my lifestyle. It’s also essential to schedule time for yourself. Put yourself on the calendar and set yourself high on that priority list so that you are taking care of your needs and prevent feelings of resentment or burn out. When you take care of yourself, you feel good and perform better in all other areas of your life.
What do you hope your children say about you? That I was a kick-ass mom (Again, biggest smile ever!)
How do you balance being life partners and business partners with your husband, Dave? It just happens. We honestly just work. Every single day, it literally all fits together like a puzzle. There’s this understanding between us that we’ve had from day one, and somehow, we automatically make it all happen. We didn’t grow up the same, but we share the same values, ethics, and drive, and those similarities make us, us. We’ve never had to “work on it”, it just works, and I’m so grateful for that.
What are some of your favourite little luxuries? I love having my hair and nails done! I couldn’t have my nails done when I was policing so I think that’s why I love treating my hands and nails even more. I also have a bath every single day, even if it’s a quick one. It’s something I love to do to immediately relax, even if it’s only for five minutes. And lastly, I really love those quiet (rare) moments that I have just to myself. I’m usually very social, but sometimes I just want to be alone for a short time to tune out the noise and reboot. I’m sure every mother can relate!
What is your favourite motto/quote? I have two: “Focus on your goals, not your obstacles.” And, “You can do anything you want, you just have to want it bad enough.”
With such a thriving career and being an inspiration to so many, what do you hope your clients take away from their experience with you? That it’s not just about food and weight-loss. That they’ve learned to love their body at every stage of the journey, and that it’s not just about how they look at the end of the transformation. My clients won’t be with me forever so if they’re going to be with me for that short period of time, I want them to get the best out of their experience, and more importantly, the best out of themselves. That’s why I’m so grateful for the community I’ve created and
the ongoing support that’s available to help them continue to grow in every way, even after the program is completed.
Where can we get more of Nichelle? Which platform are you most active on? I’m active on all social media platforms, but primarily Instagram. Instagram allows me to show all areas of my life and connect with a broader audience. It reflects more of what’s happening in my life right now or how I feel which allows me to be more of my authentic self.
There comes a point when we have to decide if we want to remain stuck on a page or begin a new chapter. Nichelle’s journey is a powerful reminder that we don’t have to be defined by the past, or allow our current circumstances to inhibit us from moving forward. Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle. With a growing family, and adjusting to new roles at work, it was difficult juggling both careers and being a mom. I loved being a Police Officer and still miss it to this day, but I was building a bigger brand and name for myself that allowed me to help transform lives in ways I never imagined. DL: I was always into photography. As Nichelle got more and more into fitness competitions, she began doing more photoshoots which were really costly. I thought, “Why are we paying for photo shoots when I can do this myself?” So, I purchased a semi-pro camera and totally sucked haha. I had a lot to learn and just kept trying. I decided to buy a pro-camera and proper lighting and would
use Nichelle as my guinea pig. I invested so much time and money into training myself to get better and better and was completed committed to becoming the best I could be. I met another photographer at one of the shows, and he gave me a lot of professional pointers and advice and shortly after, he extended an opportunity to shoot with him at his studio. The shoot was a great success, and I began renting out the studio more often for my own photoshoots. I started working with Lori and Val from Two Chick & Some Lipstick and learned the importance of professional hair and makeup. It wasn’t long before I started to get really busy and realized that this was turning into a full-blown business. At this point, I had opened my own studio and I was now managing two fulltime jobs and a family. Being very active with my NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

kids is really important to me, so I knew I had to choose one over the other eventually. Although I loved my job and had dedicated 15 years to my career as a police officer, I knew it was time to retire and pursue photography solely. When I was typing up my resignation, Nichelle came in and said, “When you’re done, change your name to mine.” I was like, “What?!” And she said, “I can’t go in with both feet unless I have both feet in.” So, we resigned together and never looked back.
How did OTC & Studiotwo22 come to life? DL: I wanted to expand my business into a bigger space and have a gym component and photography studio all under one roof. I went
our businesses intertwined; I shoot primarily for fitness magazines, and many of Nichelle’s clients were booking me for photography, so we decided to create a unique package and program that was all-encompassing of fitness, training, and a professional photo shoot. That’s when we created 8 weeks to fabuLAUS – a group program that includes exclusive training, fitness routines, meals plans, and a celebratory photoshoot at the end. We’ve completed 20 of these programs so far, and it’s still one of our most popular packages! In addition to personal training, we have become a primary space for commercial and advertisement projects with global brands. We also work with many renowned publications, and

with Val to check out our current location and immediately wanted this space. It was the perfect location! I had a vision and needed the right amount of square feet, but it wasn’t an option. This space was either “take all or nothing,” and at the time, I wasn’t considering expanding that big. But after meeting with our good friends and business colleagues, they helped us see the potential and opportunity to create a much bigger vision. And so, we did! We took on a huge space and commitment and turned it into a multifunctioning business. We wanted to create an environment that offered a space for personal training, boot-camps, private training for elite and pro athletes, photoshoots for both personal and commercial projects, and magazine advertisements. We also saw how

these magazines were asking for fitness routines so Nichelle would design and choreograph the workout, as well as write the article, and I would shoot the routine. This has become a package we now offer to both fitness models and magazines which has also been a huge success!
What is the best part about working together? DL: First and foremost, it gives us flexibility with the kids which is most important. Another big factor is trust. Being where we are now, we’ve come across a lot of good people, we’ve come across a lot of bad people, and we’ve come across a lot of bad people that we thought were good people. But no matter who we meet along the way, we can always rely on one another – she has

This whole thing wouldn’t work without each other. I know a lot of people couldn’t work with their spouse – I couldn’t work without mine. NL: We are also very busy working on our own ends of the business, so there are days where we barely see each other. He’s in the studio shooting, and I’m working at the gym, or he’s away on location, and I’m looking after the business and the kids. With such demanding schedules, there really isn’t much time to get on each other’s nerves. We just focus on what has to get done, and somehow, it all works!
What do you find to be the most challenging about working together? NL: Trying to set healthy boundaries because we’re both such dedicated, Type-A personalities that want everything to be perfect all the time and with multiple businesses and the kids, we really strive to stay open-minded and flexible. We juggle work commitments, family time and afterschool activities as best as we can. No matter what, we are there to drop off our kids at school, and there again to pick them up. Some days we have no idea how we’ll do it all, but we make it work, and do our best to balance everything. Although having structure is so important, we’ve learned to stay very open-minded because our schedules could change at any given moment.
How do you keep each other motivated? NL: I ask Dave for help, or he just knows when I’m off and vice versa. We are really good at communicating with one another. We always find time to check-in with one another throughout NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2018

A major part of making it all work is having open communication so that we know where we need to be and when, and mainly how we can support one another to help get whatever it is that has to get done, done. DL: We push each other when we need to be pushed. No is not an option, and we are dedicated and committed to completing our non-negotiable tasks. We believe that strong communication is vital to help us keep each other motivated when we need it most.
How do you “tune out the noise” with being in a such a competitive industry? DL: There’s a big misconception in this industry about the amount of work and hustle that’s actually involved to establish yourself as a professional, as well as to grow and build your business. There’s a lot of jealousy and direct competitiveness, and we just do our best to ignore it, tune them out, and choose to remain humble and focused on our own business. We pay zero attention or take interest in what others are doing – there’s room for all of us, and we wish everyone success. Is there anything you would change about your business journey so far? NL: I don’t think so. Everything happened very organically and the way it was meant to. Although there have been some negative experiences along the way, we wouldn’t change those either because they were necessary to learn and a stepping stone for us. If everything in business were perfect, we would never grow, so we’re grateful for it all because it has pushed us to become more and do better.

You should always be on the same page when it comes to the big picture. NL: I completely agree - wanting the same things and being on the same page is very important. This way you are never resenting one another or have any regrets. For example, we both retired from policing at the same time for our own reasons and were completely comfortable and happy with our decision to do so. We both knew that we wanted to merge our passions and create a business together and were ready to jump into a new career with both feet. We’re a unit, and continuously growing together as a couple and as business partners.
