Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old in the prime of her life. One Thursday afternoon Maddy complained that she was feeling sick. On Saturday, she presented to an Emergency Department where she was diagnosed with the Flu and sent home to rest. By lunchtime Tuesday she was in a coma and nine days later she was dead. Maddy’s death from Sepsis was preventable.
The Maddy Jones foundation works tirelessly to raise awareness of Sepsis and its symptoms, to prevent others meeting the same fate.

Rally for a Cause started when a group of Fraser Coast business owners were faced with the unthinkable. One of their friends had a vibrant healthy child suddenly struck down with an aggressive brain tumour.
Thus the concept of RfaC was born. The Dunga Derby is the major fundraising event to support the Rally for A Cause Charity in their efforts to support local Fraser and Sunshine Coast families with life-limiting medical conditions in need of financial and/or practical assistance.

Financial Wellbeing
Financial challenges can cause significant stress, which can impact our mental health and wellbeing. Similarly, the state of our mental health can make it harder to get on top of our finances.
What is financial wellbeing?
Financial wellbeing is about having the financial freedom to make choices that allow you to enjoy life. There are some things that affect our finances that we can’t control, like rising cost of living or unexpected expenses. But there are some things we can control.
Every day we make choices with our money. Each of these decisions, small and large, impact our lives, and these decisions also impact what we call financial wellbeing.
What are the signs of poor financial wellbeing?
• Delays recognising or acknowledging a problem, such as ignoring emails from banks or not reading bills
• Delays seeking help
• Prolonging unhelpful behaviours like overspending
• Withholding information from others, including our closest family and friends, and health professionals.
• Withdrawing socially from family, friends and work colleagues
• Self-medication and unhelpful behaviours like alcohol and substance misuse.
What factors contribute to financial wellbeing?
A variety of factors influence how people respond to money and mental health challenges, including stigma, shame and our social relationships.
What can you do to improve your financial wellbeing?
• Acknowledge the link between financial wellbeing and mental health and think about how this affects you personally.
• Get in control of your finances by setting time aside for money matters – try and get into the habit of doing this regularly.
• Don’t delay – the earlier you get on track with your finances the better.
• If you need a helping hand, ask someone close to you who will offer help without judgment.
• Make a plan and take a step-by-step approach, acknowledging each task ticked off your to-do list as an achievement.
• Seek help from a free, financial counsellor available through the National Debt Helpline.

BMW X3 30e xDrive PHEV launches Q1 2025
BMW Australia is adding a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant to its X3 lineup in Q1 2025.
The new PHEV complements the X3 20 xDrive and M50 xDrive and is priced at about $102,500.
It integrates an efficient petrol engine with electric drive for a wide variety of driving situations, developing 220kW power and 450Nm torque while doing the standard sprint (zero to 100km/h) in 6.2 seconds and has 91km electric range, says BMW.
Combined consumption is 1.6-litres per 100km and 38g/km of CO2.
The X3 30e xDrive PHEV will be the fifth PHEV model in the BMW Australia fleet, alongside the X5 xDrive50e, M5 Sedan, M5 Touring and XM.
BMW will continue offering the fully electric iX3 in both M Sport and M Sport Pro grade levels.
Next year BMW will offer 21 electrified vehicles to the local market and comes the same year the Federal Government will implement the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), where manufacturers must meet mandated CO2 emissions per kilometre figures across their fleets.
The new X3 30e xDrive delivers a high level of efficiency while achieving notable performance, says BMW Australia.
It deploys the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for PHEV models, bringing together a two-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, and high-voltage battery flat in the vehicle floor with 19.7kWh usable energy content.
The high-voltage battery charges at 11kW as standard – nearly triple the rate of the first generation X3 30e xDrive – and supports both single-phase and three-phase AC charging.
The battery can be fully recharged from empty in two hours and 15 minutes – a reduction of 90 minutes on the recharging time of the outgoing model.
The eight-speed Steptronic transmission enables all-wheel drive and the BMW X3 30e xDrive can reach 215km/h top speed and be driven in purely electric mode up to 140km/h.
The proactive energy management system has been improved, with the most efficient operating mode now always selected as a function of the route profile and the battery’s charge level.
When HYBRID mode is activated, the combustion engine is started prior to joining a freeway to allow the driver to accelerate at full power and, at the same time, optimising the battery charge, says BMW Australia.
In ELECTRIC mode, the engine is completely disconnected from the drivetrain using a separating clutch in the transmission.
It has a new look both inside and out, a highquality interior with sustainable materials and technology – including BMW Operating System 9 – and sharpened chassis dynamics.
Customers should contact their nearest BMW dealer for all pricing enquiries
Monash University releases 2024 used car safety ratings
Australians can now access updated Used Car Safety Ratings for 2024, providing comprehensive information to help intending buyers choose the safest used vehicles.
Based on data from the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), the 2024
ratings analyse 9.4 million vehicles involved in police-reported crashes and 2.6 million injured road users in Australia and New Zealand from 1987 to 2022.
The latest ratings indicate a significant improvement in vehicle safety. Drivers’ average risk of death or severe injury in the 2022 models was 36% lower than in the 2002 models.
In total, 534 vehicle models were rated out of five stars for Overall Safety, which is a reflection of combined performance across Driver Safety, Other Road User Safety and Crash Avoidance, with one star being the worst for safety and five stars indicating the best-rated vehicles for relative safety performance.
This provides consumers with 110 vehicles allocated a 5-star rating. This year, 54 vehicles received ‘Safer Pick’ status after scoring a fivestar rating for both Overall Safety and Driver Safety and having a four- or five-star Other Road User Safety and Crash Avoidance.
The 16 Safer Pick vehicles that received five
stars in every category are (in alphabetical order):
Audi A4/S4/RS4/All Road (MY 2008-2015)
Honda Civic (MY 2016-2021)
Honda Odyssey (MY 2013-2021)
Hyundai Tucson (MY 2015-2020)
Mazda 3/Axela (MY 2013-2019)
Mazda 6/Atenza (MY 2012-2022)
Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017-2022)
Mercedes Benz CLA-Class C117/X117 (MY 20132019)
Mercedes Benz E-Class W212/C207/A207 (MY 2009-2016)
Mercedes Benz GLA-Class X156 (MY 2014-2019)
Mitsubishi Outlander (MY 2012-2021)
Subaru Impreza/XV (MY 2016-2022)
Toyota Camry (MY 2017-2022)
Toyota Corolla (MY 2018-2022)
Volkswagen Tiguan (MY 2016-2022)
Volkswagen Touareg (MY 2011-2019)
For budget-conscious motorists, the ratings reveal that nearly all ‘Safer Pick’ vehicles are available second-hand for under AUD 25,000, with over half-priced at AUD 10,000 or less. This highlights the availability of safe options across various price ranges, particularly for young drivers.
The 2024 Used Car Safety Ratings show significant improvements in vehicle safety over the past twenty years. All ‘Safer Pick’ vehicles were made from 2004 onwards, with 91 per cent produced after 2008. This reflects the advantages of newer cars regarding safety features, design quality, and compliance with updated regulations.
Additionally, Electronic Stability Control has become widely available in vehicles since then.
“The Used Car Safety Ratings ‘Overall Safety’ rating reflects the balance of performance of a vehicle across all these aspects. Choosing vehicles that perform best overall will have the biggest impact on reducing road trauma in our communities,” Professor Newstead said.

“This announcement is a tremendous boost to consumer rights, business efficiency, and national productivity,” said AAAA chief executive Stuart Charity.
