Toyota Australia drops petrol-only passenger models in favour of hybrid

Toyota Australia says it will no longer sell petrol-only variants of the RAV4 SUV and all other models where hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) are available.

The move means that Corolla and Camry sedans and the Corolla Cross, RAV4 and Kluger SUVs are now 100% HEV for customer orders.

This expands Toyota’s HEV-only family to nine models, joining the Yaris Cross SUV, Corolla and Yaris hatches, and the new C-HR SUV.

Toyota Australia spokesperson Sean Hanley says this development will accelerate a sales trend of hybrid sales at record levels.

“Toyota has been implementing our HEV strategy over an extended period and remains committed to innovating across a diverse array of powertrains, which is the essence of our multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation,” Hanley says.

“Around the same time, consumer demand in Australia for hybrid models was rising consistently, including in 2020 when our overall hybrid share near-doubled to more than

one-quarter of our total sales – and it has continued to grow since.

“Faced with this demand, we were confident in the future of HEV as the dominant powertrain of choice for most passenger cars and SUVs,.

Hanley says ongoing developments, including the upcoming mandated new-vehicle efficiency standard, confirmed the foresight of Toyota’s strategy.

“Toyota has more than two decades of experience in batteries, motors and other electrification technologies with recognised fuel efficiency and emissions benefits.

“So far this year, our total HEV sales have more than doubled to 46,821 vehicles compared with last year, with all models continuing to attract strong demand.

“Simultaneously, we have worked closely with our production teams in Japan to increase supply, substantially reducing wait times on popular models like RAV4 Hybrid.

Australian auto loan defaults likely to rise –Moody’s Ratings

Key points of a Moody’s Ratings report on auto asset-backed securities (ABS) comparing credit traits of rated deals in Australia, China and Japan include macroeconomic conditions weighing on borrowers, with delinquency and default rates set to increase this year in Australia and China.

Electric vehicle (EV) loans are growing in auto ABS performance, creating some uncertainty about recovery rates as markets transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, says Moody’s Ratings.

Non-bank issuers dominate auto ABS markets, with varying credit effects across countries, it adds.

The report says Asia-Pacific auto ABS share common credit traits but also have key

differences in relation to issuers, borrowers, asset performance, deal structures, recovery rates, exposure to EVs and other key features. Most borrowers are individuals for the purchase of private vehicles, particularly in the Asia-Pacific auto ABS, but there is some SME exposure, it adds.

“Australia largely comprises high-creditquality borrowers who have shifted from banks,” says Moody’s Ratings.

“In Australia, we expect high interest rates and ongoing cost of living pressures to erode the capacity of some borrowers to repay auto loans, pushing up delinquency and default rates.”

Used car activity ramps up ahead of EOFY

The May edition of the Automotive Insights Report (AIR) shows the number of used cars for sale in Australia continuing to grow, putting downward pressure on prices, which in turn is leading to an uptick in sales.

Used car listings grew in recent months, increasing by 7.2% from the previous month, while used car sales increased by 4.4%.

‘Ongoing strength in the new car market means that we are seeing an increased supply of used vehicles coming to market, providing consumers with more options at more affordable prices,” says Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA) chief executive James Voortman.

“We expect this trend to continue, particularly in the next few months leading into the end of the financial year, which traditionally sees increased activity in both the new and used car market.

“Over the past month, we have seen a marked reduction in used cars listed by Dealers as more Australians seek to sell their vehicles privately. With the prevalence of online scams, odometer fraud and the lack of statutory

protections when buying privately, consumers must exercise due diligence when engaging in a private-to-private used car transaction.

“We are also seeing solid sales results for lower emissions vehicles with Hybrids (+6.6%), EVs (+8.0%) and PHEVs (16.6%) growing above average. EVs were the only fuel type to experience a reduction in supply, which is to be expected given the significant mismatch between demand and supply of used EVs.

“The average time to sell a used car has increased slightly to 45.5 days, a likely product of the improving supply situation, which also reduces retained values across all segments.

“Vehicles with the most vital retained values are primarily sought after and reliable Japanese makes in both the passenger car and SUV segments and in the 2-4 year and 5-7 year categories.

“The Ford Ranger has built on its impressive lead as Australia’s top-selling used vehicle and is close to breaching the 6,000 monthly sales mark. The Toyota Hilux comes in second well ahead of the rest of the pack, which includes four utes in the top 10,” he says

NSW Budget boosts EV infrastructure

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) welcomes the substantial commitment to EVs’ future and the infrastructure required in the New South Wales (NSW) State Budget.

“The NSW Government’s significant investment in electric vehicle infrastructure is a decisive step towards wide-spread adoption of the zero-emissions technology,” he says.

The measures announced are an important step towards the ambitious 50% target of all new car sales being electric by 2030, he says.

The NSW Government’s EV commitment includes a funding package aimed at expanding EV infrastructure across the state with $149 million to co-fund EV fast chargers, reducing the time needed to recharge batteries; $105 million to support businesses and local government fleets in procuring EVs and installing necessary charging infrastructure;

$20 million to co-fund EV destination chargers at regional tourist spots, promoting sustainable tourism; $10 million to co-fund EV kerbside chargers in metropolitan areas, aiding EV drivers without off-

street parking access; and $10 million to co-fund retrofitting of EV infrastructure in apartment buildings, making EV ownership more accessible for residents.

New BMW X3 here in Q1 2025

The fourth generation BMW X3 is set to launch in Australia early next year. It incorporates new design language, revised powertrains and the latest technology, while the luxury interior has a raft of new styling aspects and sustainable materials, says BMW Australia.

BMW reckons it does a standard sprint in 4.6 seconds – a 0.2 second improvement on the X3 M40i.

The new X3 20d xDrive is powered by a TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder diesel unit providing 145kW power and 400Nm torque, and it can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 7.7 seconds.

Australian models will have the BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting as standard equipment – as well as signature twin headlights with new L-shaped light elements.

The new BMW X3 includes short overhangs, a roofline extending deep into the rear end and flush door handles, along with prominent front and rear wheel arches. The LED taillights contain a T-shaped graphic and threedimensional sculpted glass lenses.

Multiple exterior paints include the newly introduced Dune Grey, while BMW Individual paints, including Frozen options, will also be available.

The new BMW X3 showcases notable improvements in agility, cornering stability and long-distance comfort, says BMW.

The cargo area can be increased from 570 litres to a maximum 1700 litres. It also has live cockpit professional, which features BMW head-up display and the augmented view function in the control display.

Used car prices declined in May as dealer stock grew

Average used car sales prices in Australian dealers fell a further 0.9% during May 2024 and are now 6.8% lower on average than last year, according to the latest Cox Automotive Australia (CAA) data.

While sales of dealer-listed used vehicles grew 6.7% for the month and are up by 4.9%

for the year, dealer inventory hit the secondhighest level in the past 12 months and is up 16.1% year-over-year (YoY).

Meanwhile, the wholesale auction market continues its recovery in terms of sales volume, with Manheim Australia recording the highest passenger and light commercial monthly tally in almost four years.

Manheim’s monthly auction sales surged 10.3% MoM and 40.6% YoY, driven by strong OEM,

fleet management, government, and dealer asset volumes.

Dealer-used car supply expanded by 2.3% MoM in May, with SUVs comprising 47.7% of listings. Despite inventory growth, Market Days’ supply ended at 64 days in May, below the benchmark of 70 days.

Dealer-used and demo vehicle sales rose 6.7% MoM and 4.9% YoY, aligning with new market sales growth. Transaction prices fell for a third month, with average dealer-used prices at their lowest since late 2021.

Manheim auctions saw robust sales volumes from dealers, OEMs, and FMOs, marking their strongest result since mid-2020.

RACV urges tradie tool protection as thefts rise

More than $33 million worth of hand and power tools were stolen from Victorian tradies in 2023, a 37% increase on the previous year, says the Crime Statistics Agency.

About 18,626 power tools and 14,911 hand tools were stolen across Victoria in 2023, an increase of 12% in the total number of items stolen Given the sharp increase in thefts, the Royal

Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) is urging Victorian tradies to check the security of their vehicles and properties.

Trade tools are particularly vulnerable to theft due to their high value and portability, posing a considerable risk to individual contractors, sole traders, and small businesses, says the RACV.

“The loss of tools can not only cause the financial setback of having to purchase replacement tools, but can also result in reduced work capacity, potentially costing thousands in lost earnings.”

RACV home general manager Bill Bloodworth suggests securing tools in a vehicle, using a robust truck bed or a lockable toolbox, anchored to the vehicle with a strong security chain if the tools are portable.

“Marking your tools with your identification details, such as your name and driver’s licence number, makes them difficult for thieves to sell, easier for you to report as missing, and increases the likelihood of recovery by police.”

RACV also suggests the use of small GPS trackers on high-value items, allowing owners to monitor the exact whereabouts of their tools through a smartphone app.

“To reduce the chance of theft, always ensure your tools are not left visible in your vehicle,” says Bloodworth.

“This recommendation extends to equipment stored on the roof, such as ladders, which should ideally be kept inside your home or garage at night.

“Thieves typically look for easy targets, so visibly securing and locking away your tools can deter them from attempting a theft,” he says.

“Securing your vehicle is equally crucial to prevent it from being stolen, potentially along with any tools inside.

“If you can, park your work vehicle, such as a ute or truck, in a secured garage.”

Tradies might want to consider the appropriate insurance coverage to minimise the hassle and financial impact of tool theft.

“RACV’s Business Insurance offers cover for loss, damage and theft for insured property such as tools, and if you opt to include business interruption coverage, may cover business expenses during tool replacement,” says Bloodworth.

“To facilitate the recovery of stolen items by police and the insurance claims process, maintain a detailed inventory of your tools, including make, model and serial numbers, and accurately declare their value. Photographs of your tools can also aid in their recovery.”

The race to secure the Southeast Asian EV market

According to JATO Dynamics, Southeast Asia is seeing a surge in demand for new electric vehicles (NEVs). In its report “Driving Change”, JATO Dynamics reveals that 2023 NEV sales in the region reached 134,000 units, marking a 199% increase driven by strong demand across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Until recently, slower adoption rates in Southeast Asia stemmed partly from a lack of innovation among current OEMs, which had previously dominated with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Chinese manufacturers have capitalized on this opportunity. In 2023, BMW, MG, Vinfast, NETA, and BYD collectively held nearly 64% of the Southeast Asian market share, with BYD leading the way with 80% of the top 10 NEV models.

“The dominance of Chinese OEMs in Southeast Asia’s NEV market will continue to grow as consumer demand rises and brand reputation strengthens,” says JATO Greater China country general manager Bo Yu.

SUVs and sedans remain popular in the region, with premium sedan models particularly favored. While historically dominated by BMW, Volvo, and Tesla, Chinese mass brands like BYD, MG, and NETA are gaining traction.

Consumer reports indicate that brand familiarity isn’t a significant factor for most Southeast Asian drivers, making them likely to embrace new Chinese brands.

Despite the potential, Southeast Asian consumers prioritize product quality (62%), vehicle performance (57%), and price (54%) when choosing vehicles, posing challenges for Chinese OEMs entering the market.

“It won’t be a one-size-fits-all approach for Chinese OEMs entering Southeast Asia,” Yu notes. “Macro incentives drive the NEV market regionally, while local price sensitivity and educational efforts vary, necessitating tailored strategies for success.”

Mitsubishi reconfirms its commitment to Australian dealers

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has reconfirmed its commitment to Australian dealers with a future product strategy to increase the product range and provide more electrified vehicles by 2030.

The strategy was announced during the 2024 Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) national dealer conference.

MMAL’s future pathway towards 2030 sees progressive electrification through hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric powertrains, new or refreshed products in multiple segments and further strengthening of the Triton product range.

MMC president and chief executive Takao Kato told the MMAL dealers that Australia is a core market for the brand and makes an important contribution to the global business.

“We will offer not only battery electrics but also plugin hybrids and hybrids and introduce appropriate products that will meet the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) set by the Australian government,” Kato says.

“As we approach the mid-point of this decade, it is important to share Mitsubishi Motors’ brand evolution and how this will underpin Australia’s future position as a key volume player for the next five years and

beyond,” MMC product strategy executive officer Koichi Namiki says

“MMAL is at a key point in its history, and the announcement confirms Mitsubishi Motors’ commitment to this market via a strong product pathway to the end of the decade. This includes delivering advanced powertrain technologies and a wider product choice,” MMAL chief executive Shaun Westcott says.

“We will continue to work closely with our dealer partners to ensure the network is geared up to support this exciting new era of Mitsubishi innovation,” he says.

Australia can go beyond EVs – Climateworks

Monash University’s Climateworks Centre’s new modelling underscores Australia’s potential to enhance transport decarbonisation through a diversified approach, urging governments to rethink planning and funding amidst modest EV uptake.

“Developing a credible plan to reduce transport emissions requires a shift in the way governments at all levels plan and fund transport – putting emissions reductions at the heart,” says Climateworks Transport Program lead Helen Rowe.

The Climateworks modelling, detailed in its latest report Decarbonising Australia’s transport sector: Diverse solutions for a credible emissions reduction plan, explores comprehensive strategies beyond EVs to effectively tackle Australia’s third-largest and fastest-growing emissions source.

“As transport emissions continue to ramp up, now is the time to be diversifying solutions, rather than placing our eggs in the one basket. This includes incorporating ‘mode shift’ –shifting the way we move people and goods to

more sustainable modes – and reducing some unnecessary trips, for example through making freight deliveries more efficient.

“Just like in the energy sector, where the nation is backing a whole suite of clean energy solutions, Australia can do the same with transport, by ramping up EV uptake while also supporting things like public and active transport, zero-emissions trucks and shifting more freight by rail.”

Investing in and implementing a diverse range of solutions can also increase transport choice, reduce congestion, and make travel more efficient and convenient, says Rowe. “If the nation purely focuses on replacing every car and truck on the road with a zero-emissions option, it is going to get stuck with the same congestion issues,” she says.

Based on the modelling, Climateworks recommends the Australian government implement a portfolio of solutions, beyond EVs, to mitigate risks and maximize benefits in decarbonising the transport sector.

Gumtree Group signs partnership with used car inspection provider

Melbourne-based Carinspect has partnered with The Market Limited, Gumtree Group, with fully qualified mechanics performing prepurchase inspections for used vehicle buyers.

The partnership, which will roll out in WA before expanding to NSW and VIC over three months, allows Gumtree customers to verify the condition of a vehicle they intend to buy.

Carinspect co-founder Zasch Weiler says that partnering with Gumtree comes at a good time for both businesses and second-hand car sales.

“We’ve had consistent growth in our customer base since Carinspect’s inception, and this new partnership has opened the door to even more opportunities to help second-hand car buyers know whether they’re buying a peach or a lemon,” Weiler says.

“With the used car market riddled in poorly maintained vehicles, it is more important than ever that second-hand car buyers enlist the expertise of a qualified mechanic who knows

cars inside and out, and that is what we’re here for,” he says.

After completing inspections for 10,000 used car buyers, Carinspect says it is poised to grow its influence with new access to Gumtree customers. It says used car sales in Australia are worth $39.9 billion, with inspection and ancillary services costing $800 million.

Carinspect engages over 100 fully vetted and qualified mechanics nationally on both a contractual and permanent basis.

The partnership is part of a plan being implemented by The Market Limited to enhance customer experiences.

“We look forward to unveiling further progress on other initiatives developed within our strategy in the coming months,” Logtenburg says.

Gumtree users can access Carinspect for their used car purchases from June 19.

Batteries on wheels

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) will provide A$3.2 million to Amber Electric (Amber) to trial battery electric vehicle (BEV) smart charging and provision of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services with residential customers.

Through this Australian-first residential trial, Amber is developing a software solution to facilitate BEV smart charging and V2G bi-directional charging for its residential customers, including the installation of 100 smart chargers and 50 V2G chargers into participants’ homes.

This is an exciting project that will provide insights into pathways for commercialisation of smart charging and V2G as well as uncover unique insights into consumer habits, says ARENA chief executive Darren Miller.

“With accelerating uptake of electric vehicles in Australia, this project will develop and demonstrate new ways for consumers to unlock value from their consumer energy resources and facilitate greater use of renewable energy.”

The solution will be built into Amber’s existing customer application to enhance its service offering, unlocking more value for BEV owners while accelerating the renewable energy transition, says ARENA.

This project will allow trial participants to turn their vehicles into “batteries on wheels” further supporting grid stability and the integration of renewable energy, says ARENA.

Amber co-chief executive Dan Adams says V2G and smart charging technology has the potential to be one of the most groundbreaking technologies to enter the Australian energy sector.

“Our customers will be able to directly compete with big coal and gas generators just by smart charging and discharging their EV battery.

“Our customers will be able to directly compete with big coal and gas generators just by smart charging and discharging their EV battery.

The ARENA-funded V2X.au summary report (delivered by enX) highlights that the proper implementation of V2G infrastructure, when complemented with supportive network tariffs, can have significant benefits for consumers.

The funding has been awarded under the Driving the Nation Fund which invests in cheaper and cleaner transport with a focus on supporting the uptake of BEVs through innovation in public charging and innovation in management of charging.
