Work starts on Sydney Cadillac Experience Centre
Sydney will be Australia’s first Cadillac Experience Centre with work starting at the Rosebery Engine Yards precinct.
The 841 square-metre centre features heritage-listed surrounds, modern architecture, and state-of-the-art showroom and service facilities.
Plans for Melbourne and Auckland centres are underway, with further details to be confirmed soon.
The Cadillac Experience Centre occupies an open-plan space in the newly developed Rosebery Engine Yards retail and lifestyle precinct.
It will include a dozen branded parking bays (five secured/garaged and seven external), three secured undercover servicing bays, and multiple delivery bays, alongside technician service facilities.
“It feels natural to bring Australia’s first Cadillac Experience Centre to such a contemporary, open, and authentic space,” says GM Australia and New Zealand managing director Jess Bala.
“Rosebery Engine Yards has a rich heritage which arms it for the future, with no shortage of simultaneous buzz about what’s coming next –that sounds familiar to me.”
The Cadillac Experience Centre was crafted in partnership with local design and architecture practice Gensler. The award-winning global firm was also responsible for designing Cadillac’s first European showroom – a futurefacing space in Zurich, Switzerland.
“Even the most iconic brands need to speak with their customers in open, inviting, and thoughtfully physical crafted spaces,” says Tom Owens of Gensler’s Sydney office. “That’s what we’ve delivered alongside Cadillac at Rosebery, offering a window into the next generation of luxury and electric driving in Sydney’s most transformative new creative hub,” he says.
The American marque has an array of nextgeneration models arriving soon in Australia, headlined by the electric Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV being built in right-hand drive at Cadillac’s Tennessee factory.
Uber to close car share business in Australia
Uber Australia will close down its carshare business after acquiring the Car Next Door start-up for $105 million in 2022.
The Australian Financial Review reports that Uber Carshare boss Will Davies did not respond to its request for comment, and an Uber spokesperson declined to comment.
According to the AFR, Uber is not the first company to struggle with the car share business model in the Australian market.
It reports that ASX-listed car subscription company Carly previously operated a service called DriveMyCar, but it ceased two years ago to concentrate on subscriptions.
On LinkedIn, Carly chief executive Chris Noone says it was disappointing to see that Uber Carshare has pulled the plug on the former Car Next Door business.
“Peer-to-peer is challenging, and it is even more challenging for a global business to get right. There are two customers for every transaction, and there is a lot of scope for disagreement about damage and vehicle condition,” Noone says.
“Realising this is why we pivoted from DriveMyCar to Carly Car Subscription. We can now offer better vehicles, lower prices and better customer service. Haven’t looked back,” he says.

Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old in the prime of her life. One Thursday afternoon Maddy complained that she was feeling sick. Work and Mental Health
Good work helps mental health and wellbeing. It can contribute to your daily activity. Your sense of purpose. Your income. And your social connection. But poor working conditions can harm your mental health and wellbeing.
Work can come in many different forms. But mentally healthy workplaces generally have a few things in common. They: Protect against risks to mental health. Mentally healthy work prevents harm to your mental health. Among other things, this means fair workloads. Fair work practices. And a safe environment.
Promote wellbeing and the positive aspects of work. Mentally healthy work means things such as fairness, inclusion, and employee development. Good culture thrives from good work.
Support people with poor mental health. In a mentally healthy workplace, your mental health is prioritised. Awareness, capability, commitment, and meaningful support exist. To help workers feel better, earlier.
In Australia, there have been significant improvements to become more mentally healthy at work, but there is more work to do. Nearly 1 in 5 people experience poor mental health each year. Nearly half of us will experience poor mental health during our lives. Many people spend a third of their lives at work.
Poor mental health costs the Australian economy from $12.2 to 22.5 billion each year (according to the Australian Government Productivity Commission).
Work is a key setting to improve and support mental health. For businesses, mentally healthy work: - improves productivity
- improves commercial outcomes
- helps attract and retain staff.
A range of work factors can influence your mental health. These include:
- clarity on what you’re doing
- the effort required (job demands)
- fair treatment
- good support
- how work is recognised and rewarded
- your environment
- your relationships and dealings with people (including clients or the public)
- having the training, skills and tools to perform your work
- communication and change at work
- exposure to traumatic events or information.
In Australia, workplaces need to manage factors at work which can harm mental health. Three key things that drive mental health at work:
- commitment from leadership
- participation for everyone
- ongoing communication.
If you’re concerned about someone at work, talk to them. When it comes to the actual conversation, there’s no one ‘right way’ to express things. What matters is that you’re thoughtful and genuine.
The National Workplace Initiative helps people navigate the range of tools and resources in Australia for mental health at work.

Australia Institute slams large pick-up truck LCT loophole
According to a new report from the Australia Institute, tax breaks for sizeable American pick-up trucks cost Australians more than $250 million in foregone revenue in 2023.
It says a loophole in Australia’s tax law effectively subsidises vehicles such as the Ram and Chevrolet pick-up trucks by avoiding the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) that other imported vehicles pay, regardless of whether they are used for work, recreation, or commuting.
The $250 million cost is more than ten times the Federal Government’s Active Transport Fund, which is used yearly to construct and upgrade cycle paths.
“The Australian public is subsidising these vehicles by hundreds of millions of dollars yearly,” said Rod Campbell, Research Director at the Australia Institute.
“These vehicles damage roads, reduce safety and increase emissions, yet they are given a massive tax break.
“Removing the luxury car tax exemption will not affect most ute drivers, particularly tradies.
“Instead, it targets those buying large luxury vehicles, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, for personal use.
“Economics 101 says that governments should tax things they want less of and subsidise stuff they want more of, and it is stunning that the Australian Government seems to want more large pick-up trucks.
“This tax break for luxury utes costs more than ten times the Government’s fund for assisting the states to construct or upgrade bicycle paths, the Active Transport Fund.
“Big pick-up trucks impose considerable costs on society, whether safety concerns or the impact on our roads and climate. Removing the luxury car tax exemption for these vehicles is a good first step in accounting for these costs,” he says.
Strong demand for new cars in August, excluding battery-electrics
Australia recorded 98,328 new vehicle sales in August 2024, making it the second-best August result.
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says this was a good result despite August 2024 being down by 10.6% from last year’s August number.
“This is a positive result in historical terms, with August 2024 recording the second-highest August ever in Australia,” he says.
“The outlier in the data is the 202 number, which broke the previous best August result (2017) by 13.8%. To date, the market has been up by 5.3%. Once again, the new car market shows signs of resilience as cost-of-living pressures and interest rates continue to impact the economy,” he says.
Consumer preferences for the types of vehicles they want to drive are demonstrated, with the passenger segment representing only 15.4% of the total market. The SUV segment represented 57.5%, and light commercial vehicles made up 22.9%, making these two segments more than 80% of the total market.
“Consumers continue to show a readiness to move into low emission vehicles with hybrid sales up 44.9% on August 2023 while sales of plug-in hybrid cars are up 119.8%,” Weber says.
“However, in line with the experience in many global markets, sales of battery electric vehicles could be better. This is despite the increase in the supply of battery electric vehicles with more brands and EV models coming to the Australian market,” he says.
Toyota was the market leader, with sales of 21,490 in August, followed by Ford (8890), Mazda (8263), Kia (6903), and Hyundai (6211).
The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s top-selling vehicle, with sales of 6712 in August, followed by the Ford Ranger (5431), Toyota Hilux (4496), Isuzu Ute D-Max (2548), and Toyota Landcruiser (2504).
Sales in the Australian Capital Territory were down 21.9% in August 2023 to 1338; New South Wales was down 13.9% to 29,831; Northern Territory was down 8.1% to 911; Queensland decreased 7.5% to 21,310; South Australia also decreased by 2% to 6813; Tasmania decreased 13% to 1604; Victoria decreased 10.6% to 26,039, and Western Australia decreased 9.9% to 10,482.
The August 2024 market of 98,328 shows a decrease in new vehicle sales of 11,638 (-10.6%) compared to August 2023 (109,966). There were 26.8 selling days in August 2024 and August 2023, resulting in a decrease of 434.3 vehicle sales per day in August 2024.
The passenger vehicle market is down by 4170 vehicle sales (-21.6%) over the same month last year, the SUV Market is down by 5772 vehicle sales (-9.3%); the light commercial market is down by 1535 vehicle sales (-6.4%), and the heavy commercial vehicle Market is down by 161 vehicle sales (-3.8%) versus August 2023.
In August, Toyota was the market leader, followed by Ford and Mazda. Toyota led Ford with a margin of 12,600 vehicle sales and 12.9 market share points.
A new battery electric vehicle (BEV) SUV from MG has been leaked online ahead of its Australian launch next year.
Called the MG S5 in China, it is reported to be similar to the MG4 hatchback and is expected to launch in Australia in 2025 with a reveal planned later in 2024.
Carsales.com.au says it understands the vehicle is no certainty to replace the MG ZS, currently Australia’s top-selling small SUV, nor be called the MG4 SUV.
Images and first details of the new small SUV were published by China’s Ministry of Industry
the 2025 MG S5 has a rear axle-mounted 125kW electric motor, a 170km/h top speed, will be 4476mm long, 1849mm wide and 1621mm high with a 2730mm wheelbase, will sit on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and

Toyota RAV4 scores 2024 best-selling hat-trick in August
The Toyota RAV4 has achieved its highest monthly sales in the model’s 30-year history, making it Australia’s best-selling vehicle for August.
It is the third time the RAV4 has been Australia’s best-selling vehicle this year and the fifth time overall.
In August, 6712 of the Toyota mid-size SUVs were delivered to customers, of which almost 95% were hybrids.
The August RAV4 total was dominated by the sale of 6342 hybrids—a tally that would have enabled those variants to top the sales chart in their own right.
The RAV4 was the most significant contributor to Toyota’s market-leading August total of 21,490 vehicles, translating into a market share of 21.9%.
August was RAV4’s sixth consecutive monthly record, and it was the first time the model exceeded 6000 sales in a month. The previous record of 5933 deliveries was set in July this year.
The only Toyota vehicle with a higher monthly total is Hilux, which had 7582 vehicles in June 2022.
Over half (55.5%) of Toyota’s August total, or 11,931 vehicles, were equipped with hybridelectric powertrains.
August was the third time in four months that Toyota’s hybrid deliveries topped 10,000.
It was also the third time in four months that more than half of Toyota’s sales were hybrids.
Toyota has sold 81,378 hybrids this year, representing 49.2% of the company’s total deliveries.
Toyota has posted more than 20,000 sales in the past five months, lifting its eight-month total to 165,496 vehicles – an average exceeding 20,000 deliveries a month.
The eight-month total is 31,749 vehicles, or 23.7% higher than the 133,747 vehicles retailed in the same period last year.
Toyota Australia spokesperson Sean Hanley says the sales results provide further evidence of the enduring appeal of hybrid technology in the Australian market.
“Right vehicle. Right place. Right time,” Hanley says.
