Sunshine Toyota on the Sunshine Coast has been a locally owned and operated family business dedicated to the motoring needs of the Sunshine Coast community. Previous owners Ian McDowell and Zac Bojanic purchased the business in 2001, after moving from Sydney where they operated a very large Toyota business in the City Centre. Sunshine Toyota experienced many successful years winning major awards including Dealer of the Year on 3 occasions. In 2011, the business was purchased by its currently owner, the Servco Group which is now the largest Toyota group in Australia with 18 dealerships.
Sunshine Toyota is proud of their commitment to giving back to the community. We take great pride in our many partnerships on the Sunshine Coast We are proud sponsors of the Buderim Foundation, The Alex Surf Club and Wishlist and we regularly volunteer for these organsations. We participate in National School Tree Day with Talara Primary College and The Currimundi Special School and we sponsor the Sunshine Coast Grammar School Basketball team. At Sunshine Toyota on the Sunshine Coast, employees are encouraged to be active in community groups and our team’s interests range from fishing groups, fitness programs, coaching kids rugby, Oztag and volunteering for Surfing for the Disabled.
With over 90 employees, we are always looking for great people. We are big believers in the
continuous improvement of our business and have a Kaizen Committee dedicated to just this. Our committee is made up of team members from different sectors of our company who meet regularly to discuss how to better our business. We love our team to be involved and they are encouraged to put forward ideas and rewards are given for any ideas implemented. An idea that we are currently focusing on is finding ways to significantly reduce the amount of paper used in our business. Our Service Advisors have already switched from paper repair orders to tablets on our Service Driveway and we are excited to explore more options this year.
With our dedication to helping Wishlist raise funds, many of our staff are involved volunteering their time supporting Give me 5 for kids, and various other projects throughout the year. Currently Sunshine Toyota is raising funds to purchase electric wheels chairs for people with mobility issues to be used within the SCUH hospital during their stay. At $18,000 for each wheelchair, any person who mentions Wishlist when purchasing a new vehicles will have $250 donated to Wishlist to support the foundation.
Sunshine Toyota has 3 sites across the coast. Currimundi (Sales and Service), Warana (Parts and Pre-Delivery) and Sippy Downs (Service)

SUPERCARS RETURNING TO NEW ZEALAND IN 2024
Supercars has announced that with support from the New Zealand Government and Taupō District Council, the Repco Supercars Championship will return to New Zealand and race at Taupō International Motorsport Park from 2024.
“It’s fitting that Supercars is coming back to NZ and hats off to everyone who has made it happen,” commented Tony Quinn, owner of Taupo International Motorsport Park. “The Kiwis are going to love the excitement of it all. While some people might be surprised that it’s at our Taupō Track, we think it’s a winning combination – the track will provide excellent racing, the consents are all in place, Taupō and their community have a proven track record in hosting world-class events, and we know that Supercars knows how to make the magic happen.
“Since purchasing the park at the end of 2021, we’ve been full steam ahead bringing it up to “TQ” standard and it’s special for our organisation to be part of the team making Supercars a reality back in NZ, in one of the most stunning regions in the country.
“I’ve no doubt that the Aussies that make the trip over to NZ are going to be well impressed with the Taupō region and all it has to offer and will go home and spread the good word!”
Following productive discussions, the New Zealand Government via the Major Events Fund has confirmed its backing for an event to take place at the North Island circuit from 2024 until at least 2026.

FRENCH BROTHERS JOIN TCR WORLD TOUR GRID
FRENCH Brothers Teddy and Jimmy Clairet will join the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia field when the Kumho TCR World Tour arrives in Australia later this year.
The French Clairet brothers will share the Hangcha Forklifts Peugeot in the pair of rounds - Race Sydney at Sydney Motorsport Park and the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International - later this year, with the pair returning as teammates to Ben Bargwanna. It is yet to be decided which rounds Teddy, 29, and Jimmy, 32, will contest this year.
Teddy raced at Mount Panorama in last year’s Supercheap Auto TCR Australia finale, while Jimmy will make his debut on Aussie soil.
Ben Bargwanna will continue his international journey with news that he will contest the final round of the TCR World Tour at Macau, also later this year. He will switch his regular Burson Auto Parts-backed Peugeot for the Hangcha Forklifts car to contest the final round of the Kumho TCR World Tour at the famous Macau Grand Prix circuit.
It will be Bargwanna’s fifth TCR World Tour round of the year, having raced at Portimao, Portugal and Spa Francorchamps in Belgium earlier this year, plus the two Aussie rounds.

AUSSIE-FIRST FOR BATHURST 12
HOUR
An Australian-first ‘Full Course Yellow’ system will be implemented at the 2024 Bathurst 12 Hour (February 16-18 ) next February. It’s part of a series of new innovations put in place by the event, with information now available for prospective teams and drivers and entries now open for the race.
Designed to give Race Control another tool to aid recoveries and safely manage on-track incidents during the race, the new Full Course Yellow (FCY) system will see all cars required to slow to 80 km/hr on the instruction of Race Control, potentially reducing the use of the Safety Car.
Cars must slow to the 80 km/hr benchmark within five seconds of the yellow flags being
displayed and proceed at single file – with any car exceeding the FCY speed limit penalized.
Once the issue is resolved, a five second countdown will be given before the FCY period is ended and cars are allowed to resume at racing speed. Alternatively, a full Safety Car could subsequently be deployed should the situation require it. The pit lane will remain open during the Full Course Yellow periods.
The race will again start at 5:45am AEDT and finish 1 lap after 17:43pm that afternoon.

The Dunga Derby started in 2015, when a group of local businesses came together after a friend’s child was struck down with an aggressive brain tumour. Shortly afterwards, a teenage dancer in the community was diagnosed with bone cancer.
The group of businesses wanted to raise money to support the families’ medical, travel and loss of income expenses. And so the Rally for a Cause Dunga Derby concept was born.

MADDY JONES
Every year over 55,000 Australians are diagnosed with sepsis and sadly, more than
8,700 lose their lives.
WHAT IS SEPSIS?
Maddy Jones was an 18-year-old Honours Law student in the prime of her life. She was intelli` gent, beautiful, very independent, wickedly funny, sarcastic, and sometimes irreverent. She died from Sepsis in October 2017.
Had there been greater awareness around Sepsis, Maddy's symptoms would have been recognised by both family and healthcare professionals. Maddy's death was preventable.
Sepsis is a life-threatening infection that may look like the flu or gastro and start with any infection such as chest, throat, skin or urinary tract.
The Maddy Jones Foundation aims to eliminate preventable deaths and disabilities resulting from a lack of Sepsis awareness, speedy diagnosis and immediate medical treatment.
If you detect even a few of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
Just ask, “Could this be Sepsis?”

Aiming for the impossible
Craig’s experience of depression and parenting
Craig always had certain expectations of what it meant to be a man. When he became a father, his perspective changed. From a young age, Craig Killian believed that he would one day have to become ‘the impossible man’.
Someone who was masculine and strong. Someone who worked hard and earned lots of money. Someone who kept their problems to themselves. To Craig, being that person seemed... impossible.
Growing up tough
Craig and his two brothers were brought up in a country town in New South Wales.
“I was raised in that old-school tradition of ‘boys don’t cry’, and these standards were even more ingrained when I was with my brothers,” remembers Craig. “There wasn’t much time for weakness.”
But this didn’t mean he disliked his father. On the contrary.
“My dad was the most amazing man I knew. He taught me so much about love and family, and he did his best with what he was taught as a kid.”
When Craig got to high school, the pressure to ‘be a man’ intensified.
“I never really fit in at school. They would talk about girls and fights and sport. I was never good at any of it, but the pressure was always there,” says Craig.
Mental health concerns surface
After Craig finished high school, he was still often confronted by unrealistic and sometimes toxic male standards.
He found himself overthinking a lot, critiquing every little decision he made. He started to feel stressed all the time, which led to feeling tired. But sleeping proved difficult too, as Craig couldn’t calm his thoughts and was constantly restless.
This cycle continued for years. Yet Craig never felt he could talk to anyone about how he was feeling.
When he was 25, Craig’s dad died. In the same week, Craig was evicted from the house he was renting. He had his mobile phone cut off. And he found out his then-partner had cheated on him. Still, Craig dealt with all of this himself because that was how he thought the impossible man should handle it.
Dealing with fatherhood
Two years later, Craig moved to Newcastle. By this stage, the notion of the impossible man had faded. Not long after the move, Craig met Brooke, who would later become his wife. They hit it off straight away and it wasn’t long before they were engaged.
Then came the news that excited and terrified Craig at the same time. They were going to be parents.
“The thought of being a dad never scared me. It excited me. But when my wife told me she was pregnant, I imagined the impossible man waking after years of slumber,” says Craig.
“I suddenly needed to take my career more seriously. I needed to act and sound more professional, and less like the goofball I usually was.”
Craig started putting in longer hours at work. He was promoted to a highlevel manager position with his own office and budgets to manage. Craig’s wife noticed the changes. They worried her.
“It took a lot of energy out of me trying to be someone I wasn’t, and this hurt my wife. I was not the man she fell in love with.”
When Craig’s son was born, he was overjoyed. But he was so busy at work, he was barely home to spend any time with his family.
And when he did get home, he was so drained all we wanted to do was be left alone, or to sleep.
Losing control
By this stage, Craig was drinking five coffees a day, sleeping poorly and had lost a lot of weight. His performance at work was declining. And he was still struggling to be present at home.
One day, Craig was sitting in his car, having just pulled up at the office. Suddenly, it was like he didn’t have control of his own body.
“I could feel everything, yet I felt numb at the same time. Like someone had stripped my skin down to the bare nerves. I started to sweat, I couldn’t move. I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack,” says Craig.
As it turned out, this was Craig’s first panic attack. It was the catalyst to book an appointment with his GP.
Seeking support after his panic attack
Talking with his GP, Craig was finally able to open up about how he was feeling. Craig’s GP referred him to a psychologist, who diagnosed him with anxiety and depression. He was hesitant at first but slowly, Craig began to heal.
He cut back at work, limited his coffee intake and worked on improving his sleep. He was more present with his wife and son.
Coming to terms with the impossible man
These days, Craig is extremely conscious of the expectations he places on his son. It’s not about being the best, or the strongest. And he wants his son to know that too.
“I want him to be kind and emotionally intelligent. I want him to be happy.” Craig no longer feels the pressure to become an impossible man. He sets his own standards now.

MOTOR CULTURE AUSTRALIA OPENS NEW BRISBANE HEADQUARTERS
Motor Culture Australia (MCA) has opened the doors to its new headquarters in Morningside, Brisbane. The new facility opened this month, spanning two levels and 1800 square metres.
MCA’s facility features offices, break out zones, immersive car racing and gaming, a lounge area for staff, merchandise and a vehicle showroom.
MCA founder and executive Thomas Fu says the expansion to Morningside was a strategic move to position the business in the perfect area and showcase more vehicles.
“Finding the right location, which could both house many vehicles and was also within Brisbane’s inner city, was really important to us. Our aim was to create a showroom like no other in Australia, which could act as a hub for people to gather for events while also showcasing some of the world’s best vehicles,” Fu says.
“At the same time, we wanted to create a HQ which was reflective of MCA’s vibrant energy, a place where our staff could be inspired and interact in a creative environment,” he says.
It can accommodate 100 vehicles, ranging from classics to custom built cars, alongside JDMs and supercars.
MCA will run its main operations from the Brisbane office whilst continuing to offer premium car events across the nation.
FIRST SAFETY RATING USING NEW TEST CRITERIA GIVES LEXUS RZ BEV TOP SCORE
The battery electric Lexus RZ gained a five-star Australasia New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety rating – the first vehicle model to undergo the test under expanded 2023-2025 criteria.
It recorded 87% for adult occupant protection, 89% for child occupant protection, 84% for vulnerable road user protection, and 84% for safety assist.
Score thresholds of 80% (adult occupant protection, and child occupant protection) and 70% (safety assist) continue to apply for a vehicle to be eligible for a five-star rating in 2023, however the breadth of safety aspects and test scenarios assessed under the new protocols has expanded, says ANCAP, adding that crash protection remains its safety ratings’ foundation.
ANCAP is now placing a greater focus on vehicleto-vehicle crash compatibility through an increased penalty of eight points (previously four,) improved restraint design, a vehicle’s ability for motorcyclist detection, autonomous emergency braking (AEB) in
head-on and intersection crossing scenarios, cyclist protection (including anti-dooring), child occupant (systems which notify the driver of a child inadvertently left inside a vehicle) and child pedestrian protection (reversing), vehicle submergence egress capability, and driver monitoring systems.

ESTRE IN DEMAND AS ENDURO GET UNDERWAY
International sports car ace Kévin Estre is in high demand this season racing in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The French-born Estre made his Supercars debut at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 in Melbourne and is no stranger to endurance racing.
The 34-year-old took a class win in the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018, and currently races a factory Porsche Hypercar in the World Endurance Championship. He has won some of the most prestigious GT races in the world including the Spa 24 Hour, Nürburgring 24 Hour as well as the 2018-19 FIA WEC GTE Driver’s Championship, bringing with him a wealth of endurance racing experience.
After driving a Supercar for the first-time at Winton Motor Raceway, Estre flew to Japan where he finished third in the 6 Hours of Fuji aboard his Porsche Hypercar. The Frenchman then returned to Australia to prepare for the Sandown 500, driving alongside fast Kiwi rookie, 20-year-old Matt Payne, in the No. 19 Penrite Mustang. He will next return to Australia to compete at the Repco Bathurst 1000. He is no stranger to Mount Panorama having previously competed in multiple Bathurst 12 Hour races with Porsche.

ZERO ANNOUNCES 2ND-GEN LAND CRUISER EV FOR MINING INDUSTRY
ZERO Automotive, specialists in electrified light vehicles for the mining space, has unveiled its secondgeneration Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series-based ZED70 Ti, which features an unprecedented 50 per cent more power, with fast charging in under half an hour.
Founded in Adelaide in 2018, ZERO Automotive’s aim is to produce the world’s safest and toughest electric underground vehicle, with founder Dave Mitchell using his extensive engineering background to shape the future of the space.
Barminco, an underground mining services company, has signed on as the first customer to accept delivery of the model, while CarBon Leasing & Rentals, a zero emissions leasing company, has confirmed an order of 200 ZED70 Ti’s to be added to its leasing roster, commencing quarter four in 2024.
The design features ZERO’s proprietary HEPS (Hazardous Environment Protection System) underbody armour protection, which will help to increase the longevity and safety of the vehicle’s chassis in underground applications.
HEPS will also be available as an upgrade for current diesel-powered vehicles.
ZERO Automotive has recently enlisted industry leader Joe Di Santo as its new chief executive, amidst wideranging expansion plans.
“Across the board, mining companies have a desire to lower their environmental impact, ZERO Automotive has been working side by side with many in the industry to provide a solution that caters to the very specific needs of underground mining,” Di Santo says.
“Following five years of development, and two years with prototype vehicles under test by Barminco and AusMinerals, we now officially unveil the ZED70 Ti.
“We know we have gone above and beyond to develop this ADR approved package that is up for the task.
“For instance, our HEPS solution can withstand use in highly corrosive environments, which will genuinely increase the longevity and safety of the vehicles in the long term.
“Ultimately, the goal for ZERO Automotive is to become a leader in electrified vehicle drivelines, which is why we are working with trusted industry partners such as
ZERO’s Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) battery supplier Toshiba, as we look to continue to develop quality solutions that will improve the sustainability of mining.”
“We know that vehicle life span is a determining factor when it comes to fleet choices for the underground mining sector, the benefits offered via our innovative partnership with CarBon coupled with our HEPS solution, is the perfect example of how responsible business practices and economic success can be achieved,” Di Santo says.
Under the bonnet, the ZED70 Ti features a Toshiba 60kWh Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) drive battery, which retains over 70% capacity after 20,000 full-use cycles.
The architecture features 22kW Level 2 onboard fast charging and is enabled for Level 3 DC ultra-fast charging, which with a 160kW charger, results in a charging time of less than 25min.
The 3 Phase asynchronous electric motor is complete with regenerative braking, with a peak power of 200kW and a peak torque of 1,200Nm.
All important functions of the vehicle can be monitored by the GeoTab telematics platform.
Based on the single or dual-cab Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, the ZED70 Ti features many of the legacy systems that have given the model an outstanding reputation in the mining field, with items such as the transfer case, front and rear suspension, brakes and rear differential carried over from Toyota.

ARE EVS A FIRE RISK FOR INSURERS?
Most EV batteries are considered a low fire risk and rigorous standards apply, however a perception persists among media and the public that EVs are a high fire risk, some insurance stakeholders say.
That’s according to Insurance Business Australia which quotes an International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) source after the Fremantle Highway car carrier fire as saying EV fires are not more dangerous than internal combustion engine (ICE) fires and just need to be addressed differently.
IUMI has published a best practice guide for transporting EVs on ships with research about EV fires.
An accompanying release suggests shipping community concerns are growing about fires on car carriers but says research shows fires in battery EVs are not more frequent or more dangerous than ICE fires.
For instance, while media speculation initially pointed to an EV contributing to the Fremantle Highway fire, Insurance Business Australia says more recent news reports say the fire cause is still unknown.
From March 2024, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will consider ways to reduce fire risks involving shipping.
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has previously said any fire risks around EVs usually concern their charging stations or areas where batteries are stored, adding insurers have seen a rise in claims related to such incidents.
Insurance Business Australia is seeking feedback on the fire issue.

AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS SPEND A$836,640 IN LIFETIME MOTORING COSTS
CarMoney Australia found that drivers are spending A$836,640 in a lifetime paying for motoring maintenance, which is A$13,944 annually in costs.
That’s almost A$31,810 less than the average lifetime cost across all six countries that were analysed in the study, which comes in at a hefty A$868,450.
Australia was the third most expensive country analysed when it comes to paying for your vehicle.
Lowering the cost of motoring is Australia’s cheaper car prices.
The 10 cars Australian motorists will own on average during their driving lifetime cost A$397,951 in total, averaging A$39,795 per car. This is the cheapest of all the countries analysed, and significantly less than the overall average of A$55,364 per car across all countries.
However, when it comes to insurance and road tax, on average, an Aussie driver will pay A$56,389 over their lifetime to tax their vehicle – almost double the A$23,362 average across all six countries surveyed.
In New Zealand it cost A$691,409 (NZ$747,972) over a lifetime of driving which makes the country the second cheapest when it comes to paying for driving costs over a lifetime, only behind France.
With many countries moving away from petrol and diesel cars, it’s now likely drivers will own an EV in their lifetime.
CarMoney Australia looked at how much over a year and a lifetime it will cost car owners to charge an electric vehicle, based on current rates.
To charge an EV in Australia, drivers are expected to pay A$42,945 in charging costs over a lifetime right now.
Compared to other countries, Australia was ranked in the middle of the table, behind New Zealand, which is the cheapest country, and also France.
It costs A$673 (NZ$725) to charge an EV annually in New Zealand, the cheapest of all the countries analysed – a lifetime cost of A$40,404 (NZ$43,512).
Other findings included that the United Kingdom has the highest fuel and EV charging costs of all the countries analysed, the US is the most expensive country to own a car, costing more than A$1.2 million (about US$790,000) over a lifetime, France is the cheapest country to own a car over a lifetime, car repairs and fuel costs are the most affordable in Germany, and New Zealand is the cheapest country to charge an EV with lifetime costs exceeding A$15,000 (NZ$16,100) below average.

CARSALES NAMES ITS BEST ELECTRIC CAR FOR 2023
The Tesla Model Y has won Carsales Best Electric Car for 2023 from six of Australia’s most affordable EVs.
With more than 50 EVs now available in Australia – priced from under $40,000 to almost 10 times that amount and covering almost all body styles – Carsales whittled the field down to six new or upgraded finalists priced under the luxury car tax (LCT) and fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption thresholds for fuel-efficient vehicles ($89,332), including three hatchbacks, two SUVs and one fastback.
Each of the six finalists was then assessed against more than 100 criteria across five key areas – safety, technology, comfort and convenience, driving performance and ownership costs, as supplied by RedBook.com. au.
The Tesla Model Y came up trumps after solid scores in all assessment areas, which included energy density, driving range and recharging times.
“The Model Y’s overall package made it a deserving winner and a genuine force
outside the expanding EV space – providing a compelling reason for those considering hybrid and petrol cars to look at an electric SUV,” says Carsales consumer editor Nadine Armstrong.
“With one of the biggest load areas of any fiveseat SUV and among the most affordable to run, the Model Y still wins on tech and charging, and makes it a Best EV winner.
“Our recent Carsales onsite survey found 42% of respondents have considered purchasing an electric vehicle and around 24% say they believe they’ll be driving an EV by 2030,” says Armstrong.
Carsales Best Electric Car 2023 finalists included the Cupra Born, GWM Ora, Hyundai Ioniq 5, MG4, and Polestar 2.
The EV Live Stage at the Carsales Melbourne EV Show September 22-24 features Watts Under the Bonnet: The Electric Vehicle podcast hosts Greg Rust and Nadine Armstrong.
