Your #1 BFF!

Dear Readers, What is it about fashion that brings everyone together? That get’s everyone excited about what they will see at the next fashion week? It’s been almost two years that Stilo Magazine:: Style Diary has been bringing you our inner most thoughts and aspirations about our innovative fashion industry and we are glad to say, we are not going anywhere. This issue we present to you “BLACK, WHITE, & ABSTRACT.” This issue is a prime example of who we are. We are not bound by any rules or political enclosures, but will forever express our freedom to express what we want and when we want to. Stilo has finally made its place in the fashion industry. And being, Editor In Chief, and evolving from Carolyn Sylvester to my new industry title, Carol Moda, I too have found my place. I am proud to become a part of a magazine that is a trend setter and not a follower. I remember when, being a digital fashion magazine was frowned upon, now everyone is trying to climb aboard. Blogs... yes we have that too, and though they have become our new BFFs, we can never move away from the glossy... well digital glossy, I should say. What would we do without a Fashion Pictorial shot in Paris or Barcelona? That is my favorite part about creating this magazine. Let take the time to tell all of you that here at Stilo, we work very hard to bring you fashion from our hearts. What you see, is what we truly believe, not what will make us money. If you truly have a passion for fashion, then this is where you belong. Because we follow our hearts, and will forever strive to have a place in yours. Thank you for being a reader.

Pierre Cardin

The fall season is all about being both sophisticated, sexy and avant-garde. The designers have updated classical styles and mixed them with electrifying forms. The cape coat from Pierre Cardin allows movement and makes the layering easy. Pierre Cardin - the man who made his mark on the 20th century with far-reaching, futuristic designs, once worn by The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, reclaimed his auditorium in order to prove his “name” is still a viable force in the 21st century: something already demonstrated by the fact Lady Gaga recently wore one of his metallic, chainmail creations. Futuristic jumpsuits in bright fuchsia, cobalt blue, metallic and brown, little, mini

cocktail dresses in futuristic and avant-garde colors – all galaxy of Pierre Cardin is about a spirit of avant-garde and futuristic painters, architectonic designers and poets - geometric forms and poetic elegance mixed in styles of 20th and 50th. Casual and cocktail dresses, futuristic rain coats and bridal gowns showed great specter of Pierre Cardin vision and creativity in mixture of different styles epochs, profound light trough of 100 years of our history, culture, dreams about universe and still being under sign “down to Earth”. Personally I adore his hats and futuristic silhouettes what came from classy fifties, which gives amazing elegance of creative and mode r n woman.

ICTORIA’S SECRET

WHAT’S YOUR FANTASY? Victoria’s Secret has taken runway show production to another level. This year's grand event was taped in New York, featured musical guests, AKON and Katy Perry. Producer Done and Dusted, Inc. played on Victoria's Secret's latest colorful collection and created a Rainbow Bright meets Wonder Woman, Super Hero Theme. As the Super Models, strutted down the runway to the musical performances by Grammy Nominated artists, Akon and Katy Perry, the runway was also filled with prismatic lights and shimmery balloons. So as Victoria's Secret has given us a sneak peak into our own fantasies, has Runway Show Production become more about entertainment than business? The Runway Show is no longer about the buyers, but seems now to be about reaching out to the consumers. VIctoria's Secret has ventured out on its own as a stand alone brand that does not need the support from the rest of the industry. Rather we love them enough, for them to be a leader. If they can do it, who else will also be brave enough to stand on its own? We have yet to see who will ever dare to be so MMAD!

Dear Diary, I get plenty of people telling me how lucky I am to get to go on all these shoots, to be pampered, and get pretty pictures of myself taken. I think anyone could argue that their job is harder than people may think. I’m no exception. I believe being a model is so much more than being beautiful. I’ve looked the same since I was 16, but why is it that I am a better model now than ever? Not just experience, but the act of coming to peace with oneself. I was raised to think that occupations like modeling or acting were a waste of time, especially if you weren’t making money. I never really believed it, but today it is more untrue to me than ever. Growing up, I was never praised for how I looked, I was awkward, skinny, shy, and completely uncomfortable in my skin. I was taught one standard of beauty: that to be beautiful, you had to have fair porcelain skin, and long hair. My olive skin was basically not accepted as beautiful in my culture. Although I grew up hearing this, a part of me really believed there was more than one way to be pretty. When I was introduced to the world of modeling, I saw endless ways and reasons to be/feel beautiful. I may not be rich, or incredibly famous, or even statuesque and tall...but I do have one secret that I always remember. When I’m walking down the street, smiling from ear to ear, and people are looking at me wondering what I know?

Beauty is a state of mind.

The Lisa Blue Story:: ‘Lisa Blue began with one girl’s dream’ A few years ago I, Lisa Burke, traveled to Tonga with the sole purpose to swim with humpback whales. I came face to face with these 15 meters, 20 tonne, gentle, ancient giants of the ocean. No words can describe this experience. The mother and baby whale approached me. The baby came so close to me as though to touch me that I backed up. The eyes, only a foot away, looked straight into my soul. My heart burst open. In that moment I promised that I would do what I could to help protect them and their environment. In spite of the history of humans killing these angelic beings they look at us with such immense unconditional love. Two years later, in Byron Bay, after I had been ill for several months and so had not been in the water, I saw whales near the horizon about 6 kms away. At the time I had no fitness, was frail, underweight (due to having been seriously unwell) and was very sad. I decided to paddle out on my surf board to get a closer look. I paddled out about 2 kms and at that point could see the whales breaching a couple of kms away. From my heart I began to call the whales. I longed to be close to them. After about an hour of being out there I decided that I was kidding myself and began to head back to shore. I turned to paddle and wondered how on earth I got out so far. After several strokes I stopped to rest. And for some reason I turned my head around. About 3 metres from me a whale surfaced and looked me directly in the eye. I screamed with joy! An eagle circled above and a stingray appeared also. I was so elated I powered back to shore. I got my sign.

I remembered my promise. It was time to take action. I decided to not give into my illness and I flew to Bali to surf. After having surfed two seasons in Oz I felt I was ready for Bali. I was dropped off by a canoe 2 kms into the ocean (high tide) at a reef break, named Airport Middles, to be faced with 15 foot waves. I was shaking with fear and excitement. I managed to ride a ten footer and then got ‘majorly’ wiped out. It felt like I was under water forever. No wonder there were only five blokes out there. It was on of the greatest moments of my life. And the fact that I was a 37 year old, single mother beginner was sensational. That day I felt I could do anything. I thought about my promise to the baby whale. Sitting out on my board in the ocean I pondered– “Surfing, fashion, whales, dolphins, swimwear, modeling…”..-hence began my plan to create a swimwear label that could help protect the whales and the dolphins. From the Blue was born my dream. One of our pro female surfers in Byron told me that the greatest female surfer in the world will be the girl who can surf the big waves and be feminine and sexy at the same time. I see ‘surfing’ as a metaphor for life. ‘Lisa Blue’ represents the girl of the future who can be sexy, beautiful, powerful and environmentally aware at the same time. She is not afraid to share her beauty with the world and so shows other girls that they too can shine.

About the Designer, Lisa Burke: Designer Lisa Burke, makes a connection between the authentic Australian culture and its modern society to create a one of a kind swimwear collection. Her love for whales and the ocean has driven her to make a difference through her designs and her philanthropic spirit towards the Australian Whale Conservation Society (www.awcs.org.au). About the Art: The aboriginal style prints for 2010/11 are derived from Rosie Miller’s exquisite Australian Aboriginal paintings. Rosie is from the Mirning tribe (whale tribe), South Australia. Lisa Burke, the designer, has united with friends Rosie Miller and Bunna Lawrie, a close relative of Rosie and one of the last traditional whale dreamers on earth, to help win the good fight to save the whales and dolphins. Lisa is delighted to bridge the ancient world with the modern world and bring a greater appreciation to the original cultural beauty of Australia. Lisa has been given permission from the elders to the honor of using the art work and the face paint designs. 40@40 Signature Series

The 40 @ 40 Collection evokes the struggles, passions, talents, accomplishments and enduring strength of our ancestors. As we explore our peoples’ history—the pyramid builders, physicians, metaphysicians, alchemists and mathematicians—and the great men and women who are alive today—the athletes, musicians, composers, writers and activists—I entreat you to be inspired by their legacy.

It is a familiar saying: “A People with no history have no future.” This single truth has motivated and inspired each brushstroke I have swept across a canvas. While the immediate subject or series changes, the purpose behind my art remains the same: educate, empower and unite. I use art as a means of sharing the rich history and beauty of the motherland - Africa. By creating a positive and authentic image of Africa, we can begin to embrace the land, the history, and ourselves - its

Like fine silk thread, each image in this collection weaves together to form a vivid tapestry that chronicles the collective story of our past. The lessons from our history resonate through these paintings as they do within each of us; we must use the present to embrace our past, and

Charles, Miles Davis, and even Sarah Vaughan, takes you right to that moment where you can almost here the melody. His art is filled with the right combination of colors and the strokes brings the art to life.

EDITOR’S THOUGHTS:: Having artistic talent is one thing, but having the power to move your soul through your art, is another. What makes people want to just stop, stare and be taken away to another time? What makes people appreciate how a work of art has even been created? It takes life, talent and of course creativity. Mark Stoddart, A.K.A., Kurupt, has all three. Influenced by life, music, and art, Mark Stoddart, Kurupt has proves that visual expression is the window to one’s soul. Having a diverse background in not only Fine Art, but also Graphic Design and Commercial Art, Mark has found a way to express his view of the world in a style of art that truly has something to say. Mark has a way of capturing the best of his muse. His paintings of some of the greatest music artists of all time, such as Billie Holliday, Ray

Music Christina has sold over 25 Million albums worldwide, has won four Grammy Awards, a Latin Grammy Award and has had two Top Five Albums in the US. You might know her well as Brittany Spears Rival years ago, but the young teen you once knew, singing “What a girl wants” is all grown up.

Christina comes back on the seen releasing

her latest album, “Bionic.”

It is not easy being a music artist these days. The music industry is changing. In order to be noticed you have to be unique and very, very talented.

With popular artists

like, LADY GAGA that is making big waves, for a music veteran to reclaim a crown, you have to be able to come back with better. Christina Aguilera is doing just that. She is a beautiful woman with a stylish flair.

With extraordi-

nary talent and a vision to do what she feels, Christina Aguilera is one of the few artists that can maintain flexibility in style of music, while still pleasing her fan base.

You should definitely check out her latest album on www. christinaaguilera.com. Trust me, its very abstract.

Carol Moda:: During the NY FASHION WEEK festivities, I was given a complimentary stay at the five star, The Mark Hotel in New York CIty. From the moment, I walked in, I was greeted with an extraordinary quality of hospitality and comfort. During my stay, I was located in one of their 77 King guest rooms. Among the room’s amenities, was a room control panel, black and white, marble bathroom, a deep-soaking tubs, double sinks, a separate shower, granite mini bar, 32-inch HD Television and audio system, with a universal MP3, laptop and of course the plush bathrobe and bedroom slippers. It was like heaven, the king-size bed was made with soft goose down comforters and pillows. In the morning, I was greeted to a mouth watering breakfast of bacon, eggs, homestyle potatoes, freshly squeezed orange juice, and green tea. The silver tray was decorated with flowers and equipped with little miniature jars of honey, jam, sugar, ketchup and utensils. Also during my stay, I came into my room and found a complimentary bottle of Chardonnay and a thank you note issued by the hotel’s Marketing & PR department. All in all, I had a grand time there and will recommend The Mark Hotel as definitely one of the best places to stay in NYC.
