Welcome to Your Students’ Union! Everything that we do is aimed at making your time at Stirling amazing and over the next few pages we will give you just a taste of all of the things on offer to make your time at University the best it can be! The Union has a huge range of activities from sports teams, clubs, societies and events to keep you busy. Getting involved with groups like Hockey, Ultimate Frisbee or our Drama Soc gives you a chance to meet new people! The Union is also a place to come if you need a chat or just want to get your hands on the free condoms! During Freshers Week you’ll not only have loads of events, clubs nights and freebies to enjoy but you’ll also get to chill out with Starbucks Coffee in Underground and enjoy a full Scottish Breakfast in Studio for those mornings after the night before. Freshers Week is the most exciting time of the year and everyone in the Union is hyped to meet you all throughout the week, which this year is set to be the biggest ever! You’ll get a tonne of free stuff and a load of student offers at our Freebie Fayre and with over 80 clubs, societies and sports teams, there’s always something to do. Freshers Week is your essential guide to student life in Stirling so here are some must do Freshers Week tips! Be sure to look out for the F Team, our Freshers volunteers on hand to answer all your questions and dish out the must have Official 2013 lanyard! Pick up your Official Union Guide, with built in diary for all those important dates, when you get your student card. Freshers Week 2013 is set to be the best week of your life! We’ve got some amazing nights lined up. From the Welcome and Back 2 Skool parties to big name acts, live comedy and the famous Freshers Foam Party, we’ve got it covered! The Union is the only place to party during Freshers Week so make sure you don’t miss out on all the action. The only way to make sure you are at the party is to grab an F Pass. The Sports Union has a proud tradition in providing opportunities for participation and competition within the 40 various Sports Union clubs which exist. There is a wide variety of sport available ranging from American Football through to Ultimate Frisbee! To see them in action, find out about membership and sign up for Sports Union membership, visit the famous Sports Union Bazaar in the Sports Centre on Wednesday 11th September 2013. Your Union is not all just about the clubs nights, sports and banter. It’s also a place for representing your voice and making sure you’re getting the best Uni experience you can! Last year through campaigns and lobbies we not only took student opinion to the decision makers, we also won for students securing a 24hr library, free drinking water fountains across campus and fighting for equal marriage and much, much more! As a Union, we campaign on the issues which you think matter, from improving cycle paths or opposing nuclear weapons to campaigning from more gender equality or against tuition fees. So you really can have an impact in where our priorities lie and what we do! Just come along and speak to us. It’s not all lobbies and petitions though, we are also here to provide help and support throughout your time at University whether you’re needing someone to talk to or some advice on your studies.
Another huge part of our work is through our class reps and school officers. These volunteers are students just like you who work to improve your course and deal with any issues which come up. If you’re interested in shaping your studies from the start then why not volunteer to become a Course Rep in your first week. Our Energy Ambassador team are trained volunteers who carry out ‘energy checks’ in privately rented student accommodations to lower your utility bills and to save CO2. They will give you valuable advice and show you some tricks on how to insulate your home and generally save energy. Although you may be living in halls this year, if you would like a Home Energy Check next year or are interested in becoming an Energy Ambassador just pop in to the Union office or email: lcuccstirling@gmail.com. Living in halls? To win tasty goodies such as Ben & Jerry’s ice cream all you need to do is sign up and show that you are reducing your energy usage via our monthly photo competitions. Creativity and innovative ideas will win you prizes. You will also automatically be entered into the inter-hall energy saving competition where the hall who saves the most energy wins a party at the end of semester! Furthermore, you can become a Green Champion in your hall to help advocate the campaign and be in with a chance of winning even better prizes such as money and vouchers. Like the Stirling Student Switch Off page to keep up to date. As a Fresher moving into accommodation you will need lots of new things to fill your room and kitchen. This can be expensive but fear not, SURU is here to save the day! Every semester we collect unwanted reusable items from students who are leaving, store them over the summer and give them all out at the beginning of the new semester FOR FREE to new and returning students.
