WELCOME TO YOUR UNION As your elected Sabbatical Officers and fellow students, we would like to welcome you all to Your Union and look forward to meeting you in the coming year! The University of Stirling Students’ Union is an organisation dedicated to Making Students’ Lives Better. The Union is a democratic body led by students, ensuring that at the centre of everything the Union does, there is a beneficial impact on students’ lives. As you read on, you’ll see that we work across a huge range of areas for you – from representation to Clubs & Societies/Sports, volunteering to environmental projects. The previous Sabbatical team worked hard on various campaigns, including mental health awareness, a housing grant for students who can’t afford their rent and even securing a fee waiver for Palestinian and Syrian students. This year we want to build on these successes and further enhance your student experience. We want to help you get active and support you to look after your own physical and mental well-being. Read on to find out what we’re here to do for you, with you and alongside you; from Clubs and Sports teams to environmental changes, volunteering in the community to course representation and activism. You will also find out about our great bar and catering outlets which will become your second home. The Union was able to do great things last year and we hope to continue this, but we need students to make it happen. Join in.

ABOUT YOUR UNION Your Students’ Union is a student-led organisation with you at its very core. Each year you elect a set of part time Officers and 4 full time Officers, all chosen to run your Students’ Union alongside our team of Union Staff. These Officers are accountable to you - so make sure you use your vote at election time and your voice at General Meetings to get the best out of your Union.

OUR PURPOSE & MISSION Our mission is to provide representative leadership when it comes to furthering and protecting your experience here at Stirling University. Fairer grading for your coursework, lower rent costs or more mental health support for all students are just some of the issues on which we campaign. Our job is making sure that you have somewhere to go when you’re in need of help and guidance. We also give support to Clubs and Sports teams as well as providing that essential pint/coffee after a hard day in classes. The Union cares about its membership and will do everything it can to provide you with the best possible student experience.

REPRESENTATION The Union has different levels of student representation. Firstly, the Sabbatical Officers are full time Union Reps who work day to day to improve your University experience as a whole. They are available from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm in the Union Offices. A key part of this role is the academic representation they provide so if you have any queries, questions or concerns, be sure to get in touch. Your Executive Officers are another important aspect of your representation, especially if you have a specific interest or issue, and they can also be contacted via the Union Office. All of the Union Officers are elected by you in elections which usually happen in March every year, with by-elections in October. Check out the Union website to find out info on the upcoming byelections and discover how you can get involved. Visit: www.stirlingstudentsunion.com

YOUR EDUCATION ZONE Hey, I’m Matt and as your VP Education it’s my job to ensure that no matter how long you’re at Stirling, be it for a semester, a year or a whole degree, you have the best student experience possible. I lead up the Union’s Education Zone and through this we work to improve the student experience for all. We want to know how you’re finding studying at Stirling – what the University does well and what it could be doing better. We use this feedback to keep on improving your time at Stirling by bringing about changes that you want to see.

BECOME A REP

Why not volunteer as a rep for your module or degree programme? Our reps work in partnership with University staff to improve the student experience for all, transforming learning and teaching and tackling any issues. CAMPAIGNS | EQUALITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION | MENTAL HEALTH | EQUALITY STEERING GROUP

EQUALITY IN YOUR UNION My name is Astrid and I am your Union President for this academic year. I’m here to represent students’ opinions, wants, and needs to the University (and to hand out free condoms!). Short on study space? Waiting for counselling? I’m on it.

CAMPAIGNS

This year I’ll be working with Student Support at the University to increase and improve the mental health provisions that they offer, running bi-weekly mental health events and advertising external resources. I’ll be ensuring that the Accommodation Enhancement Fund, which came about through our Big Rent Campaign is working for students who are struggling financially. I am also keen to work with the University to create more study spaces for students at Stirling and show current study space availability online. Finally, I want to make sure that the University of Stirling and the Students’ Union are inclusive and encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion amongst the student population. I really look forward to working with the Equalities Steering Group to ensure that we represent all of our students effectively.

EQUALITIES STEERING GROUP

The Equalities Steering Group is a space for elected representatives of minority groups to discuss issues, plan activities and share knowledge and understanding. The group focuses on how we can make our University environment, but also the wider world, more equal, inclusive, and safe. Elected students who sit on the equalities steering group do this through running campaigns, lobbying for needed change and other forms of student activism. We love to see student activism and liberation campaigns as they are a great way for people to come together to create change. Meeting info is posted regularly on the Union website at www.stirlingstudentsunion.com/unionmeetings We are always here to listen to any issues you might be facing as a Stirling student, so please don’t ever hesitate to get in touch if there is anything you want to change. The more you tell us about what is or isn’t working, the more we can do to Make Students’ Lives Better.

Astrid Smallenbroek | Union President e: president.union@stir.ac.uk t: 01786 467167

Hi I’m Rebecca, your Sports Union President for 2017/18! Sport can play a key role in many students’ University experience so make sure you get involved – there is plenty to choose from!

SPORTS TEAMS Within our Sports Union, we currently have 50 clubs! These range from the mainstream sports such as football, hockey, rugby and netball to more niche sports such as underwater hockey, American football, polo and ultimate frisbee. Each of our Sports Teams are run by students and each have their own club committee. Committee membership can be an opportunity for you to get involved further in the team and you can gain valuable experience in doing so! If you are interested in joining a sports club, check out the full list on our website at: www.stirlingstudentsunion.com/sportsunion

COMPETITIONS

Our sports teams take part in regional, national and international competitions throughout the year. BUCS Wednesdays are renowned as the day of sport and we are fortunate enough to have no compulsory classes during this time, giving every student the opportunity to represent the University at sport. Stirling students can trial to compete for Scottish Universities National Squad at Home Nations tournaments or even on a global scale with Team GB!

PARTICIPATION

We have many participation events throughout the year and this is your opportunity to get involved outwith team sports. The annual 5K-A-Day campaign takes place over the month of November and has huge campus-wide involvement. Get ready!

HEALTHY BODY HEALTHY MIND

There are many ways we encourage students to look after their mental and social wellbeing. We offer opportunities for students to engage in a wide variety of activities, all with the aim of living a healthy lifestyle. We proudly hold a 4 star award for Healthy Body Healthy Mind from NUS Scotland and Scottish Student Sport! Keep up with all things Sport at our meetings or #bleedgreen on social media! www.stirlingstudentsunion.com/unionmeetings

SUPPORT & ADVOCACY Your Union recognises that many things can affect your student experience and even affect your studies. We offer confidential support, information and guidance including specialist support and representation for academic appeals, disciplinary proceedings, academic misconduct, fitness to practice referrals, professional progress referrals and complaints. We are independent from and complement the services offered by the University. No matter how trivial or how serious the issue seems, you don’t have to deal with it on your own. We won’t judge you but we will do what we can to help you achieve the best possible outcome for your situation. Call, email or drop in to the Students’ Union office and your enquiry will be handled in confidence and directed to the person who may best help you, or we will signpost you to other services where appropriate. You don’t need to be on the Stirling campus to access support. Your Union can support you by phone and email and can also make arrangements, when required, for you to have Union representation in person at your campus.

In Stirling, the Private Rented Sector plays a vital role in the local housing system and in the last few years the sector has been subject to increasing regulation of the sector through central and local government policies and legislation. Stirling Council has a dedicated team dealing with all aspects of Private Rented Housing queries mainly covering the licensing and regulation of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and the regulation of Private Rented properties. We also cover complaints regarding illegal practices, repairs and other general advice queries. All HMO properties require a licence and it is illegal for your landlord to let out a property to 3 or more unrelated persons without a licence. A copy of the HMO licence should be displayed in the property for your information. If you suspect that you live in an unlicensed HMO then please contact the Private Rented Team on 01786 237678 or email hmo@stirling.gov.uk Documentation that you are legally entitled to view include a copy of the fire risk assessment (including log book for testing fire alarms and emergency lighting), gas certificate, lease agreement, Energy Performance Certificate. Ensure that any deposit paid by a tenant is lodged with the relevant tenancy deposit scheme. Stirling Council, in conjunction with the University of Stirling Students Union, has issued a booklet titled “Student House Guide” which covers the essential information you need to know when looking for a private let. A copy may be obtained from the Student Union or online at www.stirlingdigs.co.uk If you live in a private let that is not an HMO then your landlord is legally required to register as a private landlord and register the property with the local authority. If you wish to check to see if your landlord is registered then you can carry out a public search at www.landlordregistrationscotland.gov.uk or alternatively you can contact the Private Rented Team if you have any queries or complaints on 0845 277 7000 or email landlordregistration@stirling.gov.uk You can also obtain advice on the private rented sector at the following websites: www.shelterscotland.org.uk – offers advice for all private tenants and people who are homeless; for any queries please contact 08088004444 www.prhpscotland.gov.uk – guidance for tenants & landlords on repairs issues & complaints www.edinburgh.gov.uk – type in Letwise to the search facility to check templates of lease agreements, end of tenancy documents and your legal rights. www.stirlingcab.org.uk – Citizens Advice Bureau based in Upper Craigs, Stirling. www.rentingscotland.org – Practical guides for Private Renting in Scotland for tenants & landlords (covers tenancies, tenancy deposits, repairs and tenants information pack)
