Dear Parents and Students, St. John’s is steeped in a tradition of excellence that prepares our students for successful leadership and service to others. It is a school community that encourages and supports achievement both within the classrooms and on the playing fields. There is no greater example of excellence and achievement than Cadet Baseball. The St. John’s community was greatly disappointed when baseball was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we look forward to and welcome the 2021 season. This ball club is defined by talent, work ethic, teamwork, consistency and passion for the sport. Further, this nationally-recognized baseball program plays a crucial role in preparing students to play at the collegiate and professional levels. Each year, student-athletes from this program receive regional season honors, as well as offers to play for college teams. The St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame is filled with exceptional baseball players.
2
With the strong connection between the coaching staff and student-athletes, each game is an exciting display of America’s national pastime – a game in which success is only possible when the coach truly knows his players, and the players trust their coach’s leadership and ability to make strategic decisions that bring the team victory. Yes, this program prepares these young men for athletic and academic success. But most importantly, it grounds them in Lasallian values. We are proud of the way these players represent St. John’s. In fact, at the start of the season, an umpire made time to contact the school and share his experience with our freshman and JV teams. He was impressed by the professionalism and sportsmanship the St. John’s coaches and players displayed during tournament play. Finally, we would like to thank the entire team of coaches, players, families and alumni for their dedication, support and enthusiasm. Play ball! Sincerely,
Jeffrey W. Mancabelli President

ST. JOHN’S BASEBALL 2021
HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM
S
t. John’s has a long and storied baseball tradition. Founded in 1907, the baseball program was originally known as the St. John’s Preps. Sometime between 1909 and 1947, the program was disbanded and then revived as the Cadets by Gene Augusterfer and Joe Gallagher. The Cadets won three conference championships during the 1950s and nine conference championships from 1960-1978. When Ed Gibbs took over in 1993, however, the once proud program was in a state of total disrepair. The Cadets had not captured a championship for more than 15 years and had not been ranked in The Washington Post’s Top 10 in more than a decade. The Cadets had won only nine games in the previous two seasons combined and played in a poor facility that was in need of substantial upgrades. Gibbs resurrected St. John’s program and constructed a baseball powerhouse that became synonymous with excellence. Gibbs’ first team went 13-12. His second team went 26-4, won the WCAC regular season title and began a remarkable run of 13 straight 20-win seasons. Gibbs won 318 games, two conference tournament titles, eight regular season titles and saw his team ranked in the top 10 by The Washington Post in 12 of his 13 years. He was selected as Coach of the Year by The Washington Post in 2005 and on three different occasions was named WCAC Coach of the Year. Gibbs was inducted into the St. John’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. The 2020 season was Mark Gibbs’ 17th year in the St. John’s program and his 14th as head coach. During his tenure, the baseball team has grown from an area powerhouse to an elite program recognized throughout the country. St. John’s has been nationally ranked in nine of the last 17 years by the most influential high school baseball publications in the United States, including Baseball America, USA Today and Collegiate Baseball. St. John’s ascent into the national spotlight reached a fever pitch in 2008, when Baseball America ranked the Cadets as the eighth-best team in the country and featured the Cadets as its spotlight program in its national high school baseball preview issue. At the same time, Collegiate Baseball named the Cadets as the second-best high school team in the nation. The Cadets proved worthy of the preseason acclaim by placing fourth in the Anderson Bat National Classic in Southern California, the nation’s top high school baseball tournament. During the event, St. John’s defeated two teams ranked among the

top 25 in the country, both from Southern California, before succumbing to the eventual tournament champions in the winner’s bracket championship game. This marked the second straight year St. John’s had defeated two nationally ranked teams from California at the Anderson Bat National Classic. This success on the national level is unprecedented for a program from the mid-Atlantic region

and validated the program’s standing among the nation’s best. During Mark Gibbs’ 14 years as head coach, the Cadets have sent 110 players on to play college baseball, had 17 players drafted by or signed to free agent contracts with professional baseball teams and saw St. John’s players move on to some of the most prestigious baseball programs in the nation,
HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM including College World Series participants University of Mississippi, Mississippi St. University and University of North Carolina as well as College World Series champions University of Virginia and Coastal Carolina University. St. John’s has also produced 37 Washington Post All-Met selections, ten high school All-Americans and four WCAC Play-
ers of the Year. Gibbs was honored in 2008 by being selected as a coach at the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, which was televised live on ESPN. The Cadets have won or tied for 10 WCAC regular season titles (2007, 2010, 2012-2019), seven WCAC tournament titles (2011, 2014-2019) and two DCSAA
titles (2014, 2019) during his tenure. Gibbs has been named WCAC Coach of the Year three times (2012, 2013, 2016), USA Today Washington, DC, Coach of the Year three times (2015-2017) and was The Washington Post’s All-Met Coach of the Year in 2016. Following the 2019 season, he was selected as the DC State Coach of the Year.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Scranton and a master’s degree in education and human development from The George Washington University. Throughout his 30 years in Catholic education, Mancabelli has remained focused on creating and leading positive and inclusive educational environments. In March, 2020, St. John’s announced the appointment of Dennis Hart as the school’s new director of athletics. Hart will bring extensive experience as an administrator, teacher and coach to St. John’s. For the past 14 years, he has devoted himself to the students of his own alma mater, St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, an all-boys Catholic preparatory high school in Philadelphia, PA. He spent the past five years serving as director of athletics, overseeing a robust and successful program that included 40 teams, nearly 100 coaches and more than 700 student-athletes. Prior to that, Hart spent four years as dean of students and five years as a history teacher, including an appointment as the chair of the History Department. He also coached both baseball and basketball for St. Joseph’s Prep, the same sports he played as a student there. Hart served as associate head coach for the varsity baseball team for 13 years, helping guide the team to four consecutive division titles, back-to-back Philadelphia Catholic League championships and a 2009 appearance in the state semifinal game. He also spent three years as a coach for the school’s basketball program, including time with both the varsity and freshman teams. Prior to joining the faculty at St. Joseph’s Prep, Hart was a social studies and science teacher at People for People Charter School in Philadelphia for three years. He also coached the boys’ varsity basketball team, which he led to two Independent Charter School League finals. He began his coaching career at St. Matthew School, also in Philadelphia, where he served as assistant coach for the girls’ varsity high school Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) team. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Temple University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from St. Joseph’s University. Hart has also served on a number of professional committees, including the St. Joseph’s Prep Strategic Plan 2020 – Academic Excellence Committee (co-chair), St. Joseph’s Prep Middle States Committee (chair), St. Joseph’s Prep Board of Trustees Athletics and Student Life Committee, the Philadelphia Catholic League (vice chairman) and the Philadelphia Catholic League Board of Directors. In the time that he has been with the school, he has taught in two academic departments and held four positions in the administration. He was also part of the baseball coaching staff for six years and has worked extensively in other areas of the school’s extra-curricular offerings. Before becoming principal, Themistos was the director of admissions, academic dean and assistant principal for academic affairs. In his extensive work in the academic administration, Themistos has been committed to improving the education of students by attending to their immediate needs, while asserting his belief than an innovative mindset should be applied to the school’s fervent Lasallian pedagogy when developing new programs and opportunities. He and his wife Laurie have two daughters, Caroline and Kalliope, and enjoy being fully immersed in life at SJC.

He currently works at the Center for Integrated Manual Therapies (CIMT) in Columbia, MD, and Washington, DC, where he started collaborating with the elite strength and conditioning coaches at Optimum Performance Training Institute and developed a unique approach to exercise rehabilitation. Juzwak focuses on training foundational movement patterns, which effectively improve core stability, increase flexibility and build strength throughout the entire body. Juzwak specializes in the treatment of both basic and complicated musculoskeletal injuries, especially individuals with chronic pain. His passion is sports, and his experience includes working with athletes at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, particularly those competing in baseball and golf. Scott lives in Columbia, MD with his wife Stephanie, and daughter Maclayne.

THE UNDER ARMOUR CONNECTION
14
K
evin Plank, SJC class of 1990 and MVP of the 1989 championship victory against DeMatha, is the founder and owner of Under Armour, the originator of performance apparel. Plank started the company in 1996. Since then, Under Armour has been an industry leader. When Under Armour sold shares of the company for the first time in November 2005, the company posted the most successful initial product offering by an American company in five years, and the stock has continued to perform extraordinarily well. By 2010, the company was posting more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Under Armour is now an official supplier to Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, the National Football League and just about every Division 1 program. Under Armour holds roughly 80% of the market share in the compression performance apparel market. The line of clothing is designed to keep athletes cool in the hot weather and warm in the cold weather, while alleviating muscle fatigue and wicking sweat away from the body. In 2006, Plank was named the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in
the retail and consumer products category. In 2005, Plank was named Industrialist of the Year by The Baltimore Museum of Industry. In 2012, Forbes magazine listed him as No. 3 on the list of the most powerful CEO’s in America under the age of 40. Plank has also been inducted into the Baltimore Business Journal’s Hall of Fame and has served on the St. John’s Board of Trustees. Plank has stayed close to the St. John’s Athletic Department, specifically

the baseball program. In 2007, the Cadets became the first team in the country to wear the Under Armour baseball uniform. Since that time, Under Armour has been the primary outfitter for everything our players wear on game day, including cleats, socks, T-shirts, cold gear, batting gloves, helmets and hats. Under Armour is more than just gear to St. John’s athletes. For the students, it is a matter of pride to wear this athletic label created by a St. John’s alumnus.

VARSITY COACHES MARK GIBBS '96 HEAD COACH / 15TH SEASON 304-80 OVERALL RECORD / .792 WINNING %
28
Mark Gibbs heads into his 15th year as head coach for the Cadets. He played for St. John’s from 1993 to 1996 and was a three-time first team All-WCAC selection and a two-time first team Washington Post All-Met selection. Following his senior season, he was named WCAC Player of the Year and Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as one of College Sport Magazine’s Top 100 players in the country. Gibbs played four years of college baseball at George Mason University. He was a four-year starter at shortstop for the Patriots and finished in the top 10 in hits, games played, hit by pitches and fielding chances. After college, he was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Orioles and spent three and a half years in professional baseball, advancing to Double A (Bowie) with the Orioles. In six of Gibbs’ 13 seasons, the Cadets were nationally ranked by the major baseball publications (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, ESPN, Rivals.com, Perfect Game and USA TODAY). Before their 2008 season, St. John’s graced the cover of Baseball America and the Cadets enjoyed a profile article in the magazine’s high school preview. St. John’s was the first team from the mid-Atlantic to ever be profiled in the preview issue. Gibbs has sent 110 players into college baseball, had 17 players who were drafted by or signed to free agent contracts with professional teams and has an overall record of 304-78, including twelve 20-win campaigns. Players from St. John’s have advanced to some of the most prestigious college programs in the nation, including College World Series participants University of Virginia (Scott Silverstein, Nick Howard), University of Mississippi (Errol Robinson, Jake Steinberg), University of North Carolina (L.J. Hoes, Josh Leehmuis) and Coastal Carolina University (Cam Remalia) as well as SEC powers Mississippi State University (Nick Routt, Alex Deise) and University of Tennessee (Michael Flax, Brodie Leftridge). During his 17 years as the head infield instructor (2004-19), Gibbs had 19 different infielders earn college scholarships (31 total played college baseball). The Cadets have won or tied for ten WCAC regular season titles (2007, 2010, 2012-19) and seven WCAC tournament titles (2011, 2014-19). During that time, the Cadets have posted a 170-31 WCAC regular season record, which represents a winning percentage of .845. Gibbs was named as an assistant coach for the 2009 Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field in Chicago and the Washington DC Extra Coach of the Year in 2010. He was also named WCAC Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2015, the USA TODAY Washington, DC, Coach of the Year in 2015, 2016 and 2017, as well as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year in 2016. Following the 2019 season he was selected as the DC State Coach of the Year. Gibbs is heavily involved with youth baseball in the Washington, DC, area. He is a partner in Diamond Skills Baseball, a local baseball camp recognized around the country for its outstanding camps for junior high and high school players. In 2020, Gibbs brought in more than 60 college coaches to work at the Diamond Skills All-American Camp, which is designed to allow serious high school players
the opportunity to learn from top college coaches during the winter. His Diamond Skills Baseball Prospect Camp also brings in some of the top college coaches from across the nation to work with serious junior high players during the summer. His work with college coaches during recruiting season and with these camps has allowed him to develop an extensive network of close friends and contacts within the college coaching profession. Gibbs works in the Alumni and Development Office at St. John’s and lives with his wife Mindy, son Matthew and daughter Allie in Silver Spring, MD. MARK GIBBS BY THE NUMBERS CAREER RECORD

ST. JOHN’S BASEBALL 2021
2021 SEASON PREVIEW
F
ollowing the unexpected cancelation of the 2020 season and a shortened 2021 season on the horizon, the Cadets are still expected to put a team on the field that will compete in every game. Fourteen players, including 12 seniors, return this year. Despite not getting to play in a championship, the expectation of competing day in and day out will not change.
PITCHING
What the pitching staff lacks in experience, they make up for with competitiveness. Seven seniors and a junior return from 2020. Four-year varsity member and East Carolina signee Quinn Allen will be expected to provide leadership. Over his career, Allen has appeared in nine total games, amassing a .70 ERA. Virginia Commonwealth University signee Ethan Mishra (3 1/3 IP) and Towson University signee Dom Valis (2 IP) are the only other players who have thrown in a varsity game. Other pitchers expected to see significant innings include senior RHPs Jason Schiavone (James Madison University), Max Simpson (Towson University), Michael Hippchen (Wilson College), along with LHPs senior Vinny Walsh (Shenandoah University) and junior JT Gibson (Virginia Tech University). Newcomers fighting for innings include seniors Earl Skrine (Morehouse College) and Griffin Smallwood and juniors Adam Astacio, Flynn Howard and Sean Quinn. “I am super excited to see this group on the field. They have progressed nicely during the winter and should present a tough test for any offense,” said Coach Gibbs.
CATCHERS
Virginia Commonwealth University signee Casey Gibbs returns for his third year on the varsity squad but his first as the fulltime starter behind the plate. In his sophomore year, Gibbs earned honorable mention All-WCAC while hitting .435 with four doubles and 13 RBI. Fellow senior Jason Schiavone will be the primary back up. Gibbs remarked, “Having two catchers that are committed to play in college is a luxury that most programs do not have. Both of these guys can catch at a high level and give us security behind the plate.”
CASEY GIBBS
JASON SCHIVAONE
INFIELD
The infield returns three full-time starters along with one other who played in both games during the 2020 season. Senior Quinn Allen, a full-time starter at first base in 2019, returns from a serious medical condition to be the starting first baseman. In 2019, Allen hit .345 with three doubles, three triples and scored 21 runs. “The return of Quinn is a huge boost to our team. He can provide valuable leadership to guys who haven’t seen much varsity action.” Seniors Schiavone and Dom Valis were the only other players to start games in 2020. Schiavone will move from third base to shortstop and Valis is still expected to be a primary option at first base. Junior AJ Martin appeared in both games last year and will be the second base starter. Other returners include seniors Max Simpson and Connor Smith. Simpson will be heavily in the mix at first base, while Smith will provide depth at third and second base. Newcomers include juniors Vinny Hall, Flynn Howard and sophomore Brayden Martin. Hall and Martin expect to see significant action in the infield, while Howard will provide depth at first base and DH. “This position group should be stout defensively and provide both power and speed on the bases,” remarked Gibbs.

2021 SEASON PREVIEW OUTFIELD
Three of the four returning outfielders made starts in 2020, and senior DM Jefferson returns to play centerfield and provide the bulk of the experience. Jefferson, a Notre Dame University signee, hit .427 with 15 RBI, 21 runs and 12 stolen bases in his sophomore campaign. Fellow seniors Theo Pollack and Vinny Walsh both made single starts in 2020. Cooper May, another senior, was hurt at the beginning of the 2020 season and did not see any action. Juniors Anthony Escobar, Cory Hatcher, Cam Kennedy and Jack Lasota are the newcomers to this group and are expected to provide depth at all three positions. “The outfield group returns in its entirety from 2020 and will be a very good group both defensively and offensively,” according to Gibbs.
32
DH AND LINEUP
As in past years, the DH will depend on the pitching rotation. As many as seven different players could see time here including Quinn Allen, Max Simpson, Dom Valis, Flynn Howard, Jack Lasota, AJ Martin and Brayden Martin. The offense should be explosive from top to bottom. This lineup will provide both power and speed and will be able to score in multiple ways. “Our identity on the offensive side doesn’t change with personnel. We expect to put pressure on the defense in multiple ways and execute situationally,” said Coach Gibbs.
SCHEDULE
The shortened spring schedule includes a total of 12 games, playing all the WCAC teams once. The three extra games will include MIAA power Archbishop Spalding, Wilson and a second game with conference foe Gonzaga.
