Women Invested in Narrative

Exploration will gather to explore the book of Ruth. Special thanks to our facilitator, Lee Ley!

We ask you read the book of Ruth ahead of the meeting. While not required, it will help if everyone can familiarize themselves to add to our discussion.

The children and teens, as well as their families, will gather in the Sparks Fellowship Hall on Sunday, February 12 for lunch, card-making, and cookie decorating. All yummy cookies will be delivered to our homebound members on Tuesday, February 14.

Cost for lunch (sandwiches, chips, fruit, and drink) is $5.00 per person or $20.00 per family. RSVP requested by Friday, February 10; please contact Toni (toni@sjlcknox.org).

A Place at theTable will be making sandwiches on the 2nd Sunday of each month, and we need your help!

This Sunday, February 12, we will need help assembling the sandwiches after the 2nd service. We are also in need of donations of bread, meat and cheese, or peanut butter and jelly. We will be making sandwiches for 150 people, so we'll need 10 loaves of bread and plenty of sandwich meat. You can drop them off at church anytime during regular office hours or bring them Sunday. You can also make sandwiches at home and bring them on Sunday. Our neighbors are grateful for the meals we help provide.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the church Office at toni@sjlcknox.org.

Two Opportunities for Lenten Devotion

• A six-week intentional prayer emphasis, both online and in-person opportunities to pray for our neighborhood, congregation, lay leaders, staff members, and pastors

• An online book study of Thank God It's Friday, Encountering the Seven Last from the Cross by William H. Willimon

Details to follow via e-mail!

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, as we are marked with the cross of Christ and remember we are dust, and to dust we shall return. It’s a tender and beautiful thing, to remember we are not God, and we are not nothing, we are God’s creation, made from dust and filled with God’s own breath. We will have two services in our sanctuary, at noon and 6:30pm. The evening service will follow a light supper at 5:30.

Abbey Dinners with Communion

6-7pm, March 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29)

On Wednesdays during Lent, as a way to emphasize the connection between shared meals and Communion, we will have Abbey Dinners, an informal meal with table conversation around scripture and Communion all rolled into the meal, starting at 6 and ending at 7 (in time for kids’ bedtimes and choir rehearsal). There will be singing and toys available for kids. Mostly though, there will be shared food, conversation, prayer, and Communion!

Where’s the name come from? The earliest church met in homes, sharing a full meal and blessing part of it the bread and wine as Communion. In later centuries, as life got more complicated, some sought a simpler life, eventually forming abbeys, shared homes with a life grounded in prayer, shared meals, shared service in the world, and Communion. Life is complicated now too. Abbey Dinners are a way of going spiritually back to the basics.

What should I bring? Bring yourself, bring kids, bring parents, bring friends. It’s very informal and come-asyou-are!
