Our Mission

To provide high quality parks, facilities, and recreation services that enhance residents’ lives through responsible and effective management of resources.

Park Watch Dear St. Louis County residents, As the days grow cooler, our parks burst with the colors of fall and outdoor activities abound. Our dedicated park staff has been diligently preparing for fall and winter visitors. Fall hayrides with live music and refreshments have been a popular attraction in our County parks for years. Some hayrides include narrated tours of historic, candlelit homes. With tickets as low as $7, our hayrides offer affordable family fun. At Halloween, we’ll have ghost stories at Jefferson Barracks Park, a Haunted Extravaganza in St. Vincent Park, and a Halloween Boo-Nanza at the North County Recreation Center. These events include pumpkin races, haunted tours and Halloween candy for the kids. Come winter, St. Louis County parks will welcome visitors from throughout the region to our Winter Wonderland at Tilles Park. Our staff members work for weeks to assemble this display of hundreds of thousands of lights. We are again offering Winter Wonderland Walk dates this season. At these events, visitors can walk through the exhibit with children, dogs (on a leash), strollers and wagons. Desserts, hot chocolate and other beverages will be available for purchase. The Walk dates are Nov. 22-25 and Dec. 2, 9 and 16. For senior residents, four of our recreation centers – The Pavilion at Lemay, the North County Recreation Complex, the Affton Community Center and the St. Vincent Community Center – will again offer the Renew Active and SilverSneakers programs. These programs provide free membership for swimming, walking and fitness classes for seniors who qualify through Medicare or group retiree health plans. Our staff will be happy to check to see if you qualify. We also offer ice skating (and skating lessons) at the Greensfelder and Kennedy recreation complexes. And please check this guide’s listings for schedules of nature programs, geocaching, trail rides, hikes and other activities. I hope you will join my family and me as we enjoy the terrific attractions at our parks this fall and winter. Sincerely,

Sam Page St. Louis County Executive

Volunteer Opportunities

Join the team! Individuals, families and groups will have fun and make friends while giving back to their community by working as a St. Louis County Parks volunteer. For more information call our Volunteer Coordinator at (314) 615-8865 or email parksvolunteers@stlouisco.com.

Honeysuckle Removal

Invasive bush honeysuckle is destroying forest understory by blocking sunlight from other species. Contact our partner, the Open Space Council, to volunteer for weekend honeysuckle removal and other environment-enhancing projects. Email infor@openspacestl.org or call (314) 835-9225 for project dates and sites!

GET INVOLVED

Corporate and school groups can schedule weekday honeysuckle removal projects with us to fit your group’s availability and site preference. Group projects usually run 2-3 hours and must be planned a minimum of 1 month in advance. Groups provide their own lunches if applicable, but can use available park shelters at no cost. To schedule a weekday honeysuckle removal project, email parksvolunteers@stlouisco.com or call (314) 615-8865 at least 4 weeks prior to your preferred project date.

Trail Watch

Trail Watch is a volunteer program in which hikers, cyclist, skaters and equestrians assist Park Rangers in monitoring the many trails in our St. Louis County Parks to keep them safe and enjoyable for all! Volunteers, ages 16+, must attend an initial two-hour orientation (one held every spring and fall) where Park Rangers teach trail etiquette and reporting procedures. Trail Watch Volunteers serve as ambassadors, but do not intervene in dangerous situations (only report them). Advance registration is required by calling (314) 615-8865 or emailing parksvolunteers@stlouisco.com. Call (314) 615-8865 for times and dates.

Trail Crew

Help build new trails, extensions to existing trails or repair trails. Project include limb removal, erosion control, tree trimming and general maintenance. We collaborate with Gateway Off-Road Cyclists to design, build and maintain our trails! Tools, gloves, water and lunch are provided. Volunteers ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult. Advance registration is required by calling (314) 615-8865 or emailing parksvolunteers@stlouisco.com at least 2 weeks prior to project. Call (314) 615-8865 for times and dates. 26

EXHIBITS & EXHIBITIONS

Sam Falls

Indoor Exhibition / August 24 - December 22, 2019 Laumeier Sculpture Park, Aronson Fine Art Center Organized by Dana Turkovic, Curator Los Angeles-based artist Sam Falls treks into the wilderness, traversing many of America’s national parks and even submerging himself underwater to create compositions on large sheets of canvas that capture the formal qualities of the local plant life. Using only colored pigment and the sun, Falls creates paintings that sublimate the nature world, recording a particular moment in time as well as the human impulse to connect with nature. In his sculpture and ceramic work Falls layers scavenged branches, twigs and leaves to create intricate patterns that constitute a vague definition of “place.” For Laumeier Sculpture Park, Falls will create two on-site large scale paintings documenting the Park’s forest floor by using his distinctive painting techniques with dried pigments, dew drops, rain and mist. Working with Laumeier’s master gardener to grow a customized garden, Falls will use the resulting flora on two-monumental sculptures using I-beams and brightly glazed clay tiles. The two hard-edged towers will only represent a sliver of the overwhelming space and abundance of nature.

Looking Back From 75: The Liberation of Northwestern Europe

As a reflection on the liberation of Northwestern Europe from Nazi domination, the events of 1944 will be the focus of the Old Ordnance Room in this, their 75th anniversary. As the year 1944 progressed, the story of the race across France travels through the liberation of the Netherlands and culminates in the push into the Rhineland. December finds the Germans making a desperate counterattack in the Allied lines on the Western front initiating the Battle of the Bulge. September 7 - December 30, 2019 Age

Looking Back From 75: Victory in the Pacific

As the war in Europe ended the Allies prepared for an all-out effort to end the war in the Pacific and Asia. The events in the Far East in 1945 will be the focus of the Old Ordnance Room in this, the 75th anniversary. The island hopping forces of the Allies head to the heart of the Japanese islands as the turbulent fight for democracy and freedom waged until the war’s end and the men and women fighting the war could return home to seek their peaceful, hard-earned life. Military Miniatures: Toy Soldiers from the Collection

Toy soldiers have been used for centuries as playthings and as tools of military planning and strategy. Their popularity grew in the early 18th century due to the campaigns of Frederick the Great. These modeled figures offer tremendous detail depicting actual soldiers and specific units of various armies of the world. The exhibition will feature toy soldiers from the Daniel Bissell House Collection. Schedule a visit to learn about these toys and the time period they represent, including where the units they portray served and what battles that they participated in the past, as military historians describe their uniforms and provide insight into their history. Closes on September 3, 2019. Call (314) 615-8800 for a tour. Age Fee Location All ages

Staffordshire Pottery: Selections from the Permanent Collection

Staffordshire pottery is produced in the Staffordshire potteries area of the United Kingdom. This area is in the Midlands and center around six separate towns of Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall, which are now Stoke on Trent. This location became the powerhouse of pottery production in England in the 1700-1800s and its items were sold worldwide. Staffordshire has plenty of clay, lead, salt and coal in the area which made it a perfect place for pottery production. In its heyday there were many manufacturers producing pottery in Staffordshire, some are still doing so to this day such as Wedgwood, Spode, Minton, Aynsley, Doulton and Twyford. The Bissell House has a modest yet interesting collection of Staffordshire works which are featured in this exhibit. Open September 20, 2019 - August 31, 2020. Age
