Overview With academic direction from Goldsmiths, these programmes prepare you to pursue careers in a wide range of sectors and fields including games development, user experience and virtual reality. Irrespective of whether you are planning to embark on your first degree, transfer from another programme or return to the university, our approach allows you to study for a world-class degree in Malta, without the necessity to relocate to London. Saint Martin’s Institute is a long standing teaching institution for the computing degrees under the academic direction of Goldsmiths, with a track record of excellent results and classifications attained by alumni of the Institute. Academic staff at SMI provide the theoretical guidance as well as the practical mentoring at the Institute’s laboratories, apart from providing feedback on examinations sat for at the end of each semester. Saint Martin’s follows a student centred pedagogy having a department of highly qualified and dedicated academics with decades of experience in teaching at this level.

BSC (HONS) COMPUTER SCIENCE The BSc (Hons) Computer Science provides the academic span and rigour to equip you with the skills and competences that are increasingly sought after by employers. The programme provides you with a rich, dynamic understanding of coding and computer technology and prepares you for the demands of a rapidly evolving application of computing in creativity. You may choose one of the following three specialisations: • Games Development; • User Experience; • Virtual Reality. The BSc (Hons) programme empowers you to develop a wide and practical skillset in computing with strong programming and mathematical skills, as well as softer skills in project management, presentation and teamwork. You will also have a portfolio of work to present to potential employers. Depending on the specialism you choose, you can direct your learning towards particular areas of interest such as mixed reality, user experience and video games by selecting related electives from the list of courses on offer in the third year of the programme.

Structure The programme is made up of courses totalling 180 ECTS (360 UK credits) read over a period of three academic years as a full time student or five academic years as an evening student. At Saint Martin’s Institute, the academic year is organised in three semesters, followed by semester examinations, with Christmas and Easter recesses in between. The following show the course sequence for a three-year completion timeline (these are subject to change at the discretion of the Institute). Upon successful completion of the first year, you will be awarded an MQF Level 5 Diploma in Computing with Games Design & Development.

Introduction & Intermediate Programming in Java SMc10306/07 7 ECTS / 7 ECTS The first section covers the basic programming principles, rules and syntax used for the Java Programming Language, whilst the second part provides more advanced principles in Java. Introduction to Front-End Web Development SMc10315 4 ECTS The student will learn how to design and develop a website without prior knowledge. Conceptual Game Design SMc10327 7 ECTS This unit addresses the fundamental ideas behind the design of electronic and nonelectronic games including gameplay, storytelling, challenges, and basic interactive design. Audio Design Fundamentals & Visual Narratives SMc10328/29 3 ECTS / 3 ECTS These units include a range of theoretical and practical audio-related areas, as well as visual design fundamentals both on and off the computer, across a broad range of media Maths & Science for Computer Games SMc10330 7 ECTS The student will learn aspects of computer science, software engineering, the physics and the mathematics specific for programming games.

Principles of Computing Architecture SMc10337 4 ECTS This unit provides learners with an introductory and basic understanding of the fundamental architectural techniques used in today’s computer systems. Introduction & Intermediate Databases SMc10339/40 3 ECTS / 3 ECTS These units give the learner a practical approach to the design, implementation, testing and maintenance of databases with a focus on relational database systems. Introduction to Interaction Design SMc10344 4 ECTS This unit provides an introduction to the philosophy and motivation of Interaction Design. The students will be exposed to the psychological and sociological background of users. Logic, Sets, Graph Theory & Trees SMc20381/82 2 ECTS / 2 ECTS These units introduce important concepts in discrete mathematics. Basics of Web Development SMc00432 2 ECTS Students get a grasp of developing web sites and other web enabled assets.

Mathematics for Computing SMc10333/35/434 4 ECTS / 4 ECTS / 4 ECTS These units build upon secondary school mathematics to provide students with further skills in algebra, graphs and functions, as well as introducing matrices and calculus.

Object-Oriented Programming in C++ SMc20341 7.5 ECTS This module will provide you with an object-oriented programming skillset using the language C++. Software Design & Development using Python SMc20446 7.5 ECTS This module will help you write more robust and complicated programs, learning how to use defensive coding to check data and handle unforeseen occurrences. Programming with Data SMc20435 7.5 ECTS This module introduces you to Python to learn how to source different data sources and processing it to make it useful and shareable. Agile Software Projects SMc20445 7.5 ECTS This module requires that you work in a distributed team, using online collaboration, project tracking and version control tools using the agile development methodology. Computer Security SMc20448 7.5 ECTS This module gives you an understanding for the need of securing computer systems, and the practical elements.

Graphics Programming SMc20436 7.5 ECTS This module deals with the synthesis of graphics and how to process visual signals. Algorithms & Data Structures SMc20348 7.5 ECTS This module will improve your understanding of searching and sorting and learn new algorithms to solve new problems. Databases, Networks and the Web SMc20458 7.5 ECTS You will learn theory and practical skills focused on the modern web, internet and client-server applications.

Artificial Intelligence SMc31387 7.5 ECTS You will learn AI techniques such as agent-based approaches to software design, decision making and problem solving under uncertainty. Virtual Reality SMc30449 7.5 ECTS The VR module combines the theory and psychology as well as the practical development skills to design compelling VR environments. Games Development SMc30450 7.5 ECTS This module introduces you to game engines and the process of game development. 3D Graphics and Animation SMc30451 7.5 ECTS This module covers advanced methods used in state-of-the-art graphics and animation systems. Interaction Design SMc30386 7.5 ECTS In this module you will examine the notion of interaction with technology, known as user experience (UX).

Advanced Web Development SMc30453 7.5 ECTS This module teaches you how to build dynamic, data-driven websites using databases, front-end frameworks and server-side programming. Physical Computing and the Internet of Things SMc30454 7.5 ECTS This module will explain and demonstrate how the environment can be monitored by sensors, then captured and analysed using a computer. The Final Project SMc31390 15 ECTS You will undertake a substantial independent project that allows you to demonstrate a wide range of skills in your specialist area.

Admissions Our students possess varying levels of academic and professional experience. Some students are pursuing their first undergraduate degree and preparing to enter the workforce. Some are seeking to update their skills with an additional degree or embark on a new learning opportunity after beginning their studies elsewhere. Others are returning to university after accruing valuable work experience.

We encourage applications from prospective students who are curious about the world around them and eager to apply their knowledge in ways that promote positive social change. Our admissions criteria help us determine whether your academic background is in line with our institutional standards.

Entrance Requirements If you are age 20 or younger, you must have passed qualifications that satisfy the General Entrance Requirements as noted below: • equivalent to 3 UK GCE A-levels in nonoverlapping subjects where grade EED or above is achieved or; • international equivalents to the above requirements will be considered and the decision taken at the discretion of SMI or; • one year of university credits (60 ECTS or 120 UK credits or 30 US credits).


If you are 21 years and over, you may qualify under our maturity criteria: • 1 UK GCE A-level at grade C or above or equivalent, or; • international equivalents to the above requirements will be considered and the decision taken at the discretion of SMI, or • an acceptable equivalent (30 ECTS or 20 US university credits or 60 UK credits). • work experience may also be taken in to consideration in lieu of or in conjunction with academic requirements. Applicants must be at least 17 years of age by the registration deadline. Our Admissions Panel will consider each application on its own merits, and assess whether your other credentials or work experience qualify you for entry. Thus, you may still be eligible for admission should you not meet the above criteria.

Mathematics Requirements You are required to demonstrate competence in Mathematics and as a minimum must possess at least a UK GCSELevel at Grade C or above or equivalent.

English Language Requirements You are required to demonstrate proof of competence in English, such as a recognised test of proficiency, which is acceptable to the Institute. We normally accept IELTS with an overall grade of 5.0.

In-Person Examinations Assessment of your academic work includes examinations, which are conducted in person in Malta or in any of the 500 approved centres around the world. You need to pay the University examination entry fee, in addition to an annual examination centre fee which varies depending on location. Application Requirements To be considered for admission, you must submit a completed Application Form together with the following documentation and settle the one-time non-refundable fee of €125.00: Complete / Incomplete Post-school Certificates or Transcripts We need to see evidence of the relevant qualifications before we can process your application. Option 1 Arrange for the awarding/examining authority to send us a statement or transcript of your results. The statement/transcript should include your name, date of birth and University of London student reference number (if available). Option 2 Have your original documents verified by an official authority, business or organisation. Verification means that your original document has been seen and a photocopy has been stamped and signed to be a true copy of the original. We may ask for further evidence after you have submitted your application. • Personal Statement Your personal statement (100–250 words) at the end of the form should indicate your reasons for wanting to pursue this programme. Please include details about your education, work experience and current responsibilities. • Evidence of your full name and date of birth You need to provide a copy of your passport or national identification card or driving license.

The fees ahead relate to students registering for academic year 2021-2022. These fees are subject to annual review and may be increased by up to 5% every year. You may also need to budget for textbooks (which could amount to around €400 per year) and exam centre fees. Please note: For students resident in Malta, our fees and those of the University of London are exempt from VAT.

An administration charge of €1500 per annum will apply for non-EU students without Schengen resident permit.

The Institute offers the opportunity to EU students to pay the annual tuition fees on a monthly basis, payable by the 10th of each month in advance. The fees quoted on this page are subject to annual review by the Institute. Students who resign following the start of the programme will incur a penalty of 25% of the EU tuition fee due for a single academic year, which will be decreased by the value of payments offered up to date of resignation. Students who default in two monthly payments will need to effect payment via direct debit and incur any additional administrative fees in doing so. Students opting to read for the University of London degree are required to settle the respective University of London registration and examination fees separately and directly with the University. These fees may be attained through the University’s own website http://www.london.ac.uk/fees.

The BOV Studies Plus+ loan offers students a maximum of 5 years interest and repayment free financing to meet institute fees, and other study-related costs. The loan is repayable after graduation.

Stipend & Maintenance Grant* The Government of Malta offers full-time students monthly stipend and grants payable under the Malta Government Undergraduate Scheme (MGUS). This also applies to EU students who have been residents of Malta for the previous five years. For full information check the MGUS website: https://education.gov.mt/en/studentsgrants/

Get Qualified Scheme* The Get Qualified Scheme will reimburse a maximum of 70% of the total fees paid over a period of ten years upon successful completion through income tax credit, applicable to both MQF Level 5 and MQF Level 6. The scheme applies to both EU and third country students and is conditional on the student being employed in Malta after graduation. Parents who are employed and pay income tax in Malta are able to benefit from this tax rebate scheme instead of their child if they are paying the tuition fees on behalf of their children.

In addition to the fees payable to the Institute, the student needs to budget for the cost of textbooks (SMI provides guidebooks but students are encouraged to purchase other reference textbooks) and a laptop/computer with internet access.

Evening Students Students who wish to read for a degree as an evening student while keeping a full time job must be an EU citizen or have freedom of movement in Malta, and be over 20 years old. About Your Qualifications When you graduate with a degree from the University of London you will receive the following documents:

Specific rules for the classification of awards are given in the Programme Regulations, under Scheme of Award.

• Award Certificate

The Final Diploma indicates that you were registered with the University of London and awarded a University of London degree.

• Diploma Supplement Undergraduate degrees of the University of London are awarded with Honours. Your final award certificate will include the classification of the degree you have achieved, based on the marks you are awarded for all completed assessments. The standard classification system for undergraduate degrees with Honours is: • First Class • Upper Second Class • Lower Second Class 18

• Third Class • A Pass Degree or Ordinary Degree is a degree without Honours.

Gives the name of Goldsmiths, University of London as the member institution that developed the syllabus and provided assessment. Features the University of London crest and the Vice Chancellor’s signature. The Diploma Supplement describes the nature, level and content of the programme you successfully completed and includes the transcript of courses taken, marks achieved and overall classification. It also states the role of Goldsmiths, University of London and the method of study.
