Data Compression MQF LEVEL
6
STMARTINS.EDU/COMPUTING
TOTAL CREDITS: 7ECTS
This unit provides theoretical and practical experience on data compression techniques covering a range of source data from text to multimedia. It introduces the students to the idea of optimal codes and how compression algorithms can be evaluated accordingly. Students will also be exposed to the implementation aspects of these algorithms. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — outline important issues in data compression; — describe a variety of data compression techniques; — explain the techniques for compression of binary programs, data, sound and image; — explain how to distinguish lossless data compression from lossy data compression. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 30% Assessed Coursework — 70% Examinations
