This unit aims to give students an insight into the properties of hash functions in relation to cryptography. The unit also discusses the MD and SHA families and outlines the uses of cryptographic hash functions. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — describe what is understood by a hash function; — describe the main concept of how a hash function works; — describe the properties which contribute to a cryptographically strong hash function; — distinguish between the MD and SHA families of hash functions; — relate to different applications which use such hash functions. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 30% Assessed Coursework — 70% Examinations
