This unit details the importance of managing information systems. It covers the planning, implementation and control phases of IS management. The unit introduces techniques used to plan an Information Systems strategy and expands on the various aspects that need to be considered to ensure that the strategy is implemented and managed correctly in order to support and enhance the corporate and business strategy. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — recognise the importance of managing information as one of the more critical resources of an organisation; — demonstrate the role of information systems in the management of information and knowledge; — be in a position to manage information and information systems in order to enable an organisation to maximise the potential to gain a competitive advantage; — define an information systems strategy that will enable and support the corporate/business strategy using formal planning techniques; — define an information technology strategy to support the information systems strategy; — utilise technology to enable the organisation to manage business processes effectively and efficiently; — manage implementation and change, while considering the various relative ethical and social issues; — apply different methods for evaluating and justifying investment in IS and IT; — support management in applying business performance management techniques in order to maximise investment in IS and IT; — identify areas where the company would be better served by outsourcing certain functions; — identify potential security issues linked to IS and IT, and be in a position to implement policies, procedures, tools and techniques to combat these threats; — demonstrate the changing role of the Chief Information Officer to enable him to manage the Information Systems department; — demonstrate the role of end user development within an organisation, and how to manage the relationship between the IS and user departments to maximise the potential of IS and IT. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 30% Assessed Coursework — 70% Examinations
