This unit discusses the issues arising with the general management of keys in cryptosystems and how such problems can be addressed. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — understand the problems associated with the general management of keys; — understand how public key systems are used to transfer private keys safely; — describe when the Needham-Schroeder key exchange protocol is used and how it works; — describe when the X.509 protocol is used and how it works; — describe the idea behind key escrow and how it works; — describe how the web of trust works. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 30% Assessed Coursework — 70% Examinations
