TOTAL CREDITS: 2ECTS

This unit is aimed at introducing the student to concepts in discrete mathematics involving logic and sets which will be used in other units within their degrees/programmes. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — use set notation to specify sets by means of the listing method and the rules of inclusion method; — use and interpret standard symbols related to sets; — define conditions for equal sets and for subsets and use their notation correctly; — define and work out the cardinality and power set of a finite set; — define and find the complement, union, intersection, set difference and symmetric difference of given sets; — illustrate operations of sets through Venn diagrams; — state and use the commutative, associative and distributive laws for set union and intersection; — use membership tables and Venn diagrams to establish relations between given sets; — define the truth set for a given proposition; — recognise when a given proposition is a tautology or contradiction; — state the negation of a given proposition; — construct truth tables for the connectives: and, or, not and exclusiveor; — construct truth tables for conditional connectives: if, only if and if and only if; — interpret alternative ways of wording conditional statements; — state contrapositive of a given statement; — use laws of logic to simplify a given expression; — draw block diagrams to represent the NOT, AND and OR gates; — construct a logic network to represent a given symbolic statement; — obtain an expression for the output from a given logic network. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 40% Assessed Coursework — 60% Examinations
