Maths for Graphics MQF LEVEL

6

STMARTINS.EDU/COMPUTING

TOTAL CREDITS: 5ECTS

This unit focuses on mathematics required for the 3D space by introducing mathematics in areas involving Co-ordinate Geometry, Complex Numbers and Vectors. In particular, this is in preparation for other units involving graphics. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — quote and apply a number of equations related to geometry of the straight line; — carry out numeric problems in co-ordinate geometry involving straight lines; — quote and apply the equations of the circle to numeric problems; — deal with problems involving tangents to a circle; — interpret problems relating to internal and external contact of two circles; — identify and work out problems involving orthogonal circles; — recognise the presence of complex (imaginary) numbers; — carry out basic operations involving complex numbers including the use of the conjugate; — represent complex numbers on an Argand diagram; — recognise and describe vectors in 2D and 3D space; — carry out basic operations involving vectors; — define position vectors, unit vectors and find the magnitude of vectors; — work out distances between two points and intersection of lines; — analyse and apply the concept of the scalar product; — analyse and apply the concept of the vector product; — recognise the presence and equations of planes; — carry out basic problems involving such planes; — recognise and utilise relationships for geometry involving lines and planes. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 40% Assessed Coursework — 60% Examinations
