TOTAL CREDITS: 7ECTS

This unit compares two main approaches in the design of information systems. It emphasises the importance of building high quality systems, and how to achieve optimal product and process quality. The unit is based on Object Oriented techniques and includes a high practical content in Unified Modelling Language (UML) diagram notation and creation. At the end of this unit the student will have acquired the responsibility and autonomy to: — undertake a software engineering project based on an Object Oriented approach; — design a software application using Unified Modelling Language (UML) techniques; — present the design to management and users, and be able to discuss and explain the design in order to ensure that the system requirements have been understood and mapped correctly; — enhance the UML diagrams, once agreed and signed off by users, with sufficient detail to enable development staff to develop a functional system that meets business requirements; — plan and manage the various stages of testing to ensure that the system is developed to a high degree of quality; — ensure that best practices are utilised during system development to further enhance the quality of the system under development. The assessment for this unit will be computed using the following weighting system: — 40% Assessed Coursework — 60% Examinations
