Report to the Community 2004
hoping. believing. achieving.
Message from the Board Chair and President & CEO When baby Emma underwent heart surgery shortly after birth, her family hoped they would be able to take her home... Tanner’s family never stopped believing he would receive the double lung transplant he needed to breathe on his own... Meaghan was convinced she would one day achieve her dream to ride her horse again... Over the past year, so many children came to the Stollery Children’s Hospital filled with hope. At the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, we believe that every child deserves a chance to realize their dreams. We believe we can help make their hopes come true. Together, we have helped them believe. Together, we have achieved miracles. Thanks to you, the past year has been full of achievements. With our ongoing commitment to funding the most critical priorities of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, we continued to provide significant support to both equipment and research needs. We believe that our children deserve the best pediatric equipment available. This year, we funded over $1.6 million in state-of-the-art equipment, including a C-Arm that allows surgeons to view real-time, precise x-rays while they operate. We believe that new leads in medical research offer hope for the future. This year, we funded $360,000 for research into treatments and cures for childhood injury and disease. As the volume of pediatric visits to our hospital grows, our commitment to achieving miracles grows ever stronger. With your continued support, we will make a bold promise to sick and injured children who come to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Help us reach our 2005 fundraising goal of $6.2 million...and make children’s hopes come true. Thank you for helping us achieve miracles! Dennis Miller Chair, Board of Trustees
Dianne Young President & CEO

You help give children hope As a supporter of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, you are part of something amazing...a network of donors, volunteers and sponsors committed to helping children hope for, believe in and achieve miracles. With your support over the last year, we were able to make a difference in the lives of Stollery patients and their families in many ways...we purchased critical equipment and funded research, fellowships and other important initiatives. The purchase of cutting-edge equipment continues to be a high priority need at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. With the space created by the Alberta Heart Institute, we have the opportunity to build and equip permanent pediatric Operating Rooms – enhancing surgical services from four temporary ORs to eight state-of-the-art suites. Because you hope...we were able to purchase $1.6 million worth of critically needed equipment, including Digital Radiography. We were also able to fund 10 research grants, furthering the Stollery’s reputation for cutting-edge medical innovation. Grants awarded this year have helped researchers explore areas such as major pediatric injuries, brain tumours, liver problems in newborns, the treatment of adolescent asthma, chronic lung disease, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. We also provided $300,000 in educational funding, including fellowships in emergency medicine, endocrinology, neurology and neurodevelopment. Because you believe...we were able to continue our support of the Cochrane Collaboration – an international network that connects medical experts with the latest medical evidence from around the world. The Stollery has taken the lead in gathering the latest research and evidence in pediatric health, and connecting experts to that information. The Cochrane Collaboration is helping pediatric doctors make the best treatment decisions possible. We were also able to recruit new physicians in the areas of pediatric emergency, hematology, infectious disease, neonatology, developmental medicine, cardiology and general pediatrics. Dr. Patricia Massicotte and her Pediatric Hematology Thrombosis team were recruited from Toronto’s Hospital For Sick Children, allowing the Stollery
to develop local expertise in the management of blood disorder complications. With your continued support, we can ensure state-of-the-art pediatric services will be there for future generations. Thanks to you, we are achieving the most important result of all...miracles for kids.

Because you believe... Teresa Roque, R.N., is using a Doppler, a hand-held device used to assess blood flow in the arteries of infants and children.
Darren Dockter, Equipment and Supply Coordinator, is standing beside a Narkomed 6400 anesthetic machine. Anesthesiologists use this specialized equipment to provide anesthesia to infants, and to accurately control breathing in patients from tiny infants to larger children.
Physiotherapist Lynn Petersen tests a treadmill donated by Matthew’s Challenge that has been modified so children of all ages can use it to improve their leg muscles, gait and general fitness after lengthy hospitalization.
Charlene Pidwerbeski, R.N., reaches for a warm baby blanket. These blankets are used to warm infants and children following long periods of exposure to tests or procedures.
Lori Apostal, R.N., prepares the ECLS (Extra Corporeal Life Support) machine for a patient. ECLS is a heart-lungs bypass machine used for patients recovering from heart surgery or severe lung disease. The machine does the work of the heart and lungs while the child’s own organs are healing.
Darren Dockter, Equipment and Supply Coordinator, stands beside a Skytron surgical stretcher that has the flexibility to accommodate patients from premature infants to full-grown children.
Karen Phillips, R.N., and Michael Szidorov, R.T., members of the Neonatal Transport Team, stand beside Stork I, a specialized transport isolette used to move critically ill infants from Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

...we achieve! Emma Willey Cleft lip and palate, and heart surgery Just weeks after Emma was born, she underwent heart surgery at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The surgery was a success, but Emma’s troubles were far from over. She was also born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. A serious challenge was helping her get adequate nutrition so that she could grow and thrive. With the help of special feeding equipment and dental appliances, she has done well. In 2003, she had surgery to repair her cleft lip and palate. Today, Emma likes to smile, laugh and play with her voice.
Tanner Adams-Flood Double lung transplant Tanner Adams-Flood breathes easily these days. But this little miracle spent most of his life on oxygen...24 hours a day. Tanner was born with a rare form of lung disease called Lymphangiectasia. He was on the transplant list for over two years. Then, in 2002, he received a double-lung transplant at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The five-hour procedure was a breakthrough for Canada’s largest thoracic transplant program. It was the fifth pediatric double-lung transplant performed in Canada on a child under the age of ten. Today, thanks to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Tanner is learning to skateboard and enjoys bike riding.
Meaghan Mitchell In remission from cancer Three years ago, Meaghan lost the lower part of her left leg. She had been diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma and after three months of intense chemotherapy, amputation was the solution to saving Meaghan’s life. Following her surgery, Meaghan continued with her chemotherapy treatment, suffering every side effect imaginable. But, this brave girl never cried over the pain she was feeling. Rather, Meaghan understood how important the surgery and treatment were for her health. Today, Meaghan is in remission and is a strong, determined girl winning her battle with cancer. Meaghan is the 2004 Foresters Champion Child ambassador for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Charlotte Keiller Diaphragm and heart problems As an infant, Charlotte was diagnosed with Failure To Thrive. She started tube feedings, but her breathing was irregular. Charlotte had a hole in her heart and her weak diaphragm was causing her liver to move up into her chest cavity. Doctors decided that surgically repairing the diaphragm might improve her health. Following surgery, Charlotte had trouble breathing and gaining weight. Her liver was enlarged and she was increasingly dependent on oxygen. She was in the early stages of congestive heart failure. In February 2003, Charlotte underwent successful open-heart surgery. But her breathing difficulties persisted, and doctors surgically inserted a tracheostomy tube. Charlotte is still on a ventilator, but is making steady progress and one day will no longer need it.
Kaitlyn Pas Spinal Muscular Atrophy Kaitlyn wasn’t expected to see her first birthday. She was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA), a degenerative, lifelimiting disease that affects the voluntary muscles used for crawling, walking, head and neck control, and feeding. There is also general weakness of the muscles used for breathing and coughing. Today, a “cough-assist” machine helps two-year-old Kaitlyn clean secretions from her lungs, a feeding tube reduces the chances of food entering her airway and, at night, a bi-pap machine helps fill her lungs as she breathes. She does chest physiotherapy and exercises every day. Her parents know they might not see their daughter Kaitlyn grow up, but, with help from the Stollery Children’s Hospital pediatric palliative care team, they make the most of each day they have left.
