“There are those who give with joy,
and that joy is their reward.” - Kahlil Gibran
A child in need of care is the smallest reason to give. At the Stollery

is the reward. Each year, thousands of little reasons pass through the doors of the Stollery Children’s Hospital…and, thanks to the support of our community, our reward is seeing hope and comfort in the eyes of parents, families and children. Our report celebrates the rewards we were able to achieve over the last year through the support of individuals and organizations in our community - rewards such as new state-of-the-art equipment, and funding for leading-edge research and specialized health services for kids.
As the volume of children in need of critical care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital continues to grow, so does our commitment to continuous improvements in pediatric health care. With ongoing support from our community, we will continue to reward our children with access to advanced medical care. Though we were able to highlight only a small number of the community champions that make miracles possible at the Stollery Children’s Hospital
In 2004/05, the Foundation funded: • • • •
$100,000 for the Pediatric Thrombosis program $500,000 towards the advanced medical education of pediatric specialists $1 million for leading-edge research, keeping the Stollery Children’s Hospital at the forefront of advanced pediatric care. $1.5 million towards the purchase of specialized pediatric equipment
in this report, we are grateful for the support of every individual and organization who has contributed to the Foundation. Your continued support will help ensure a healthy future for all children. Our 2006 fundraising goal is $8.2 million…with your help we can reward sick and injured children with a chance for a miracle!

YOU gave Josh
a chance
5
Little Josh Hui
is one reason why supporting the Stollery Children’s
Hospital Foundation is so important. When Josh was two and a half months old, he was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia, a rare liver disorder. Some of Josh’s bile ducts were missing and others were blocked, causing toxins to back up into the liver, which was creating serious scarring. His mom Nora, shares her experience…
“They thought that he would need a liver transplant right away, but an emergency procedure was performed. The surgeon took part of Josh’s bowel and attached it to his liver to act like a large bile duct. With this procedure, they gave him only a 30 per cent chance of not needing a liver transplant. This meant that in the four to six months following the procedure, he would start to deteriorate, lose weight, get jaundice, and go into liver failure.
Today, Josh is five years old and is the picture of health. He attends kindergarten, loves tarantulas, semi-trucks, guitar and golf. The exceptional care that we received at the Stollery Children’s Hospital made a huge difference in the life of our child.”

What better reward is there
than the health and happiness of children?

As a supporter As a supporter of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, you are part of an amazing network of individuals and organizations that give sick and injured children a chance for a miracle and the strength to achieve it. With your support, we were able to fund $1.5 million towards the purchase of specialized equipment, which plays a critical role in the lives of the children we serve.
Phototherapy Light This specialized light source is used in the care of infants suffering from jaundice due to poor liver function. Syringe Pumps Used to accurately measure the amount of medication a patient receives, this pump administers small doses at a rate specified by the care provider. Zeiss Akioskop 40 Microscope With a high-tech microscope, our researchers and lab specialists can greatly magnify organisms (taken from patient samples) and identify them, resulting in a more accurate diagnosis.
Skytron Surgical Stretcher This stretcher has the flexibility to accommodate patients from premature infants to full-grown children and teenagers. Full Trend Physiologic Monitor An essential machine for the provision of high quality care, these machines continuously monitor a patient’s respiratory rate, blood pressure and temperature. Neuro Navigational System The new Neuro Navigational System is a guidance system for brain surgery that uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to direct surgeons to problem areas inside the brain with pinpoint accuracy.

Over 55% of the children who benefit from the advanced care available at the Stollery Children’s Hospital come from outside the Capital Health Region. With a referral base of over 1.7 million children, the Stollery Children’s Hospital provides health care services to one of the largest geographic areas in the world.

Shiri MacPherson Casebeer Yellowknife, NWT
In September 2003, Shiri was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumours in her kidneys. The cancer had also spread to her lungs.
Conventional treatment of Wilms’ tumours involves removing the kidney the cancer originated from followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Due to the advanced state of Shiri’s cancer, specialists decided to fight the disease with chemotherapy first.
After two months of treatment, it was evident the chemotherapy wasn’t having the impact Shiri needed. Stollery surgeons decided to remove Shiri’s left kidney and the tumour in her right kidney. “The success of the surgery exceeded expectations all around,” said Shiri’s dad, Marino. Following this, Shiri underwent surgery to remove tumours from her lungs, and her treatment accelerated.
Today, Shiri is in remission, and leads a busy life back home in Yellowknife, NWT. Her parents say that along with the expert care she received at the Stollery, it was Shiri’s spirit and attitude that contributed to her victory over cancer.

A message to our Miracle Workers Each year, hundreds of Miracle Workers offer hands that help and hearts that care by donating the generous gift of their time to support the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. Our Miracle Workers help bring our fundraising events to life! Whether they are on the phone bank at Radiothon, supporting the silent auction at Snowflake Gala, or registering participants at the Forzani’s Mother’s Day Run & Walk, our Miracle Workers are making their mark on the lives of sick and injured children. Last year, more than 1650 Miracle Workers made their mark by donating over 8,600 hours to the Foundation! Through their gifts of time and energy, our Miracle Workers are helping ensure sick and injured children in our community and beyond have access to advanced medical care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Thank you for giving sick and injured children hope…the strength to fight…and a chance for a miracle. A special thank you to Enbridge Inc. for their ongoing support of the Foundation’s Miracle Workers volunteer program.

YOU gave Wyatt
strength
13
Just
days after Wyatt Morissette was born, his parents, Jody and Pete, were told their new baby boy had a
critical heart condition – he was born with a small left ventricle and a condition known as aortic stenosis. The day after his diagnosis, Wyatt underwent surgery. Things were going well and the family returned home to Calgary. Though Wyatt seemed to be getting better, he wasn’t gaining weight. He was airlifted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, where doctors decided to try another surgery to repair his heart.
Then, Wyatt went into cardiac arrest. He was placed in intensive care and was listed for a heart transplant. For one month, his parents could only sit by their baby boy and read to him, unable to hold Wyatt because he was so fragile. Finally, the call Jody and Pete had been waiting for came through. That day, Wyatt underwent successful heart transplant surgery and was soon on his way to a full recovery. Today, Wyatt is a healthy little boy with a bright future.
