Their journey. Our future. A battle through cancer. A fight with heart disease. A struggle with diabetes. These are the types of journeys faced by children treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital everyday. One day, it’s a visit with a pediatrician. The next, it’s being poked with needles. And the next, it’s waking up after surgery. Tens of thousands of children are treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital every year, each one on their own journey through illness or injury. With every step these children take, their families, the exceptional physicians and staff at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, and you, are there to help them along the way. Specialists. Leading-edge research. State-of-the-art equipment. All available to courageous children as they face critical health challenges… thanks to your support. Through the generosity of donors like you, in the last year the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation funded: • over $3.1 million for specialized pediatric equipment • over $1.1 million for research, keeping the Stollery at the forefront of pediatric care • over $635,000 for specialized services • over $600,000 towards the advanced medical education of pediatric specialists Our mission continues. However, medical advancements toward better cures and treatments for sick and injured children come at a price. Every year, as the Stollery continues to step out as a leader in pediatric health care, increased funding is required to meet the hospital’s most urgent needs. Today, funding for innovative research is becoming a top priority at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. An investment in research helps the Stollery achieve breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases. Your continued support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is another step in the journey to a healthier future for children. From all of them, to each of you… thank you.

…and did. Stollery Children’s Hospital Five short years ago, the doors to the Stollery Children’s Hospital officially opened. Its hospital-within-ahospital structure has become an exemplary model of excellence in pediatric health care facilities around the world. Today, the Stollery has advanced to become a world-renowned centre of excellence, delivering the best pediatric care to children from all over Western and Northern Canada. The little hospital that could is now attracting the best and brightest specialists in pediatric health care. Over the last year, nine pediatric specialists were recruited in the areas of pediatric cardiology, neonatology, and pedatric surgery, including: Dr. Jeffrey Smallhorne, Pediatric Cardiologist…one of the first pediatric cardiologists to use echocardiographic technology in the diagnosis of heart disease, work that greatly improves the delivery of care to children in need of heart surgery. Dr. Douglas Hedden, new Chief of Pediatric Surgery…a pioneer in scoliosis research, including the development of a titanium rib that allows the lungs of a child suffering from this disease to develop normally. Dr. Lori West, Pediatric Cardiologist…her research demonstrated that it was safe to use heart donors of mismatched blood types in infants, a protocol now adopted worldwide. The Stollery has also become the leading institute in Canada for complex pediatric heart surgery and transplantation. It was Stollery physicians who diagnosed a baby boy as having a congenital heart problem in utero, leading to transplant surgery just eight hours after birth.

The little hospital that could...

As the Stollery continues to grow as a leader in pediatric care, the need for increased research funding becomes more critical. Research conducted within the Stollery Children’s Hospital leads to better treatments and cures for childhood diseases and injuries. For example, Stollery researchers identified a genetic link to heart defects in infants, a breakthrough toward early detection and better treatment of heart disease. Five years ago, the little hospital that could - our Stollery Children’s Hospital - had a big vision: to become a leader in the delivery of excellent, family-focused pediatric care. It certainly did. Today, this leading-edge children’s hospital still dreams big, aiming to achieve a healthier future for children.

6

With your continued support, it will.

7

Their journey. Our future. Steps along the way to a healthier future for kids. Over the last year, donations to the Stollery Children’s Hospital helped fund specialized programs, stateof-the-art equipment, leading-edge research, and the recruitment and advanced education of pediatric specialists.

The children we serve... Each year, 140,000 patient visits occur at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. More than 50 per cent of children treated at the Stollery are from outside the Capital Health Region. The Stollery Children’s Hospital currently provides pediatric health care services to one of the largest geographic areas in the world - over 440,000 square miles.

Sick and injured children come from:

Specialists

Alberta Northern BC Saskatchewan Manitoba Yukon Nunavut Northwest Territories Other parts of Canada With two new Axioscope Microscopes and a Karyotyping Work Station, the genetics program at the Stollery Children’s Hospital will be better equipped to improve the number of prenatal tests of genetic conditions.

The Stollery’s Thrombosis team, led by Dr. Patricia Masicotte, provides highly specialized care to children at risk of, or suffering from, blood clotting disorders.

PICU Monitoring Systems and Ventilators are automated pieces of equipment used for precise monitoring of patient vital signs like pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation of the blood.

Dr. Lori West is a specialist in pediatric cardiology. Her research demonstrated that it was safe to use heart donors of mismatched blood types in infants.

Making their mark

Miracle Makers

Through the doors of the Stollery Children’s Hospital is a world-renowned centre of excellence providing incredible pediatric care for sick and injured children each year. The many success stories of children who battled the odds with the help of the Stollery are due in part to the generous gifts of time given by our Miracles Workers.

Children’s Miracle Network national sponsors are a special part of our journey towards achieving a healthier future for children. Special thanks to each national sponsor for continued support of the Children’s Miracle Network, including the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Our Miracle Workers make all the difference with their generous gifts of time

This year, more than 1,500 Miracle Workers donated over 10,000 hours to help raise funds for priority needs at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Research is the key to a healthier future...

...just like Nathan’s. In the summer of 2003, five-year old Nathan Spasiuk started complaining of headaches. His mom, Connie, took him to the emergency room at the Stollery Children’s Hospital where CT and MRI scans showed he had a mass growing at the back of his brain. Two days later, an expert surgical team performed delicate brain surgery. The surgery caused Nathan to temporarily lose his sight, and his ability to walk and talk. He began rehabilitation to relearn these basic skills.Ten days after surgery, the pathology report came back, and the news was not good. Medulloblastoma: cancer in the brain. Nathan began rigorous treatment and was put on a clinical research trial. The treatment was tough on Nathan; he was often sick and spent weeks in the hospital. Treatment finally ended for him in November 2004 and the positive results of the clinical trials were recorded. There is a possibility that the cancer can reoccur, and he could still develop secondary cancers later in life. But for now, Nathan is cancer free. Kids like Nathan who undergo treatment are followed throughout life to evaluate effects of chemotherapy and radiation. The data collected will help researchers in their work toward finding better treatments for cancer. Research at the Stollery Children’s Hospital is key to a brighter future for sick children.

Annual Foundation Events

Special Thanks...

Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes inspiring and sometimes just plain fun, our fundraising journey each year includes some special annual events.

...to the many individual and corporate contributors who gave sick and injured children treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital a chance for a miracle and the strength to achieve it.

Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon Each year, four of Edmonton’s top radio stations broadcast live from the Stollery Children’s Hospital to raise money for miracles. Children, families, and hospital staff share personal and inspiring stories of their experiences at the Stollery. Since its inception, Radiothon has raised more than $6.2 million.

Tee Up For Tots Each year, rain or shine, Edmonton golfers tee up in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. In six years, this first-class event has raised over $1.5 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Snowflake Gala As Edmonton’s premiere black-tie family gala, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Snowflake Gala is an annual favourite. It’s a unique night of celebration, dining, dancing, and fundraising, with activities for the whole family.

Miracle Builders Breakfast A new and unique fundraising event: the Miracle Builders Breakfast gathers together Edmonton’s business community leaders for a one-hour breakfast to raise funds towards a specific priority need for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. At the 2005 event, $500,000 was raised towards an Intra-Operative MRI.
