Thanks to the generosity of many, the Stollery Children’s Hospital continues to be a leader in pediatric care. In a year of economic uncertainty, we are truly thankful for the number of people who supported the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in helping to ensure the hospital continues to provide leading-edge care for our children. There were more than 150,000 patients treated at the hospital last year. Through your support, we continue to care for sick and injured children from all over central and northern 4

Your donations ensure the funds raised by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation are available to provide funding for state-of-theart equipment, specialized services, advanced medical education, and research. In the last year, a few of the things the Foundation funded include: • • • • • •

$1 million for advanced medical education $4 million for research $300,000 for ambulatory care $100,000 for cardiac sciences $450,000 for child and family support $1 million for the surgical Pediatric O-Arm providing surgeons with real time images during surgery

In 2010 we will embark on a fund raising campaign to support needed research, programming, and equipment, along with

an emergency expansion. Our community has outgrown our emergency centre. It was originally built to handle 11,000 visits a year and we now have more than 24,000 visits each year—that’s twice the number of children it was meant to support. The expansion means we will be able to double the number of emergency spaces, which means a greater capacity to treat children in need. There will also be a separate entrance for kids and a separate waiting room. For families who have spent time waiting in emergency, they know how important these separate areas are to the specific care of children. You’re making it happen--donors, sponsors, event organizers, volunteers--in ensuring our children have a healthy future. On behalf of the children treated at the Stollery, thank you.

Children’s Miracle Network Creating real miracles by raising funds for children’s hospitals. The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is a proud member of Children’s Miracle Network. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of sick and injured kids in local communities. It raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospital – 14 of which are in Canada. Our relationship with Children’s Miracle Network brings with it many special partnerships with national corporate partners, who make a big difference in the lives of sick and injured children each year through their fundraising efforts. A special thanks to each of our national sponsors for making a difference in the lives of children.

Making Their Mark Our Miracle Workers make all the difference

Fund Raising Support in the Community

Thanks to the financial support of donors, and incredible gifts of time and talent from dedicated volunteers, the Stollery Children’s Hospital has become a national leader in pediatric care. During the past year, more than 700 volunteers devoted over 6,800 hours to help raise funds for priority needs at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is fortunate to have many individuals and groups in the community who create their own fund raising events. From car washes to golf tournaments to bake sales, the ideas are endless and so is the energy in the community.

Miracle Workers put their hearts and hands to work in many different ways – whether they are taking pledges at Radiothon, building scenery for Snowflake Gala, or helping in the Foundation office.

Each year there is an average of 150 community events, and during the summer there can be as many as four or five per week.

To each and every one of our Miracle Workers…thank you. We simply couldn’t do it without you.

We appreciate all of the support and look forward to more community events in the future.

Stollery Miracles Hayden Gil In his first few years of life, Hayden’s heart condition was treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Despite his condition, he was doing well. In the spring of 2009, Hayden’s parents became concerned when he began complaining of aching and very sore legs. On July 7, a doctor’s examination and tests confirmed that Hayden had Leukemia. During the next month, this little guy had four bone marrow aspirations and five spinal taps. At the time of diagnosis, Hayden’s bones were 99 percent full of cancer cells and it had transferred to his blood and spinal fluid.

10

The next five months were filled with treatments; Hayden had three red blood cell transfusions and four platelet transfusions, along with numerous treatments of chemo. On January 12, 2010, Hayden started his maintenance protocol. He now takes daily medication at home, and only needs to go to the Stollery once a month for treatment. “So many specialists and staff have meant so much to me – and all of them were readily accessible without me asking,” said Catherine, Hayden’s mom. “The Stollery has all the people in place that you need in a time of crisis, which is just what it was – our own crisis.”

Jillian Pineau She had been feeling exhausted and wasn’t her usual energetic self, so Jillian saw a doctor and was sent for blood work. The results showed that her platelets were dangerously low and she was rushed to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Hours later, a bone marrow aspirate confirmed their fears and Jillian was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The oncology team met with the Pineau family to ease their worries and lay out Jillian’s seven-phase, two and a half year treatment plan that would include both chemotherapy and radiation. Beginning that day, Jillian spent much of the next year as an inpatient at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The first year of treatment was an aggressive attack on the cancer cells and took its toll on Jillian, physically and emotionally. She struggled with nausea, vomiting and dehydration. She lost 20 pounds and required feeding tubes to deliver muchneeded nutrition to her ailing body. 11

Beyond the physical toll, the diagnosis and treatment impacted Jillian’s emotional wellbeing. Every effort was made to brighten her day, make her feel special and welcome her family. The Teen Room, her favourite place to spend time at the Stollery, allowed her to hang out with other teenagers and not be self-conscious of her bald head, swollen face or feeding tube. “I had to put my daughter’s life in the hands of doctors and nurses at the Stollery and they provided incredible comfort and security,” says Jillian’s mom, Suellen. The worst of Jillian’s battle with cancer is over and she is in the maintenance phase of her treatment. Each day, Jillian is getting stronger and healthier. She is taking singing lessons and acting in a school play. With the help of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Jillian has survived cancer and is able to dream of her future.

Signature Events Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon Each year, Corus Radio Edmonton’s CISN Country 103.9, 92.5 Joe FM and 630 CHED broadcast live from the Stollery Children’s Hospital to raise money for miracles. Children, families and health care professionals share their personal and inspiring stories of their experiences at the Stollery. Since its inception 11 years ago, Radiothon has raised more than $12.1 million!

Tee Up For Tots

12

Over 10 years ago, Sam Abouhassan and Kevin Lowe started the Tee Up For Tots Golf Invitational. Now, every August, golfers tee up in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. Last year, Tee Up for Tots raised $2 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital emergency expansion. To date, this first-class event has raised more than $6.3 million in support of sick and injured children.

Caring for Kids Astral Radio Broadcast Astral Media Radio Edmonton teams up with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation to hold the annual Caring for Kids Broadcast. In five years this event, which is held in the heart of the Stollery Children’s Hospital at a play area called The Beach, has raised more than $2.75 million for priority child health needs.

Snowflake Gala Now Edmonton’s premiere black-tie family event, Snowflake Gala, presented by Don & Marina Ghermezian, is an annual favourite for both children and adults. It’s a unique night of celebration, dining, dancing and fundraising, with activities for the whole family. Over the past 13 years Snowflake Gala has raised more than $5.3 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

13

A special thanks Thank you to the many individual and corporate contributors that helped make it possible to fund state-of-theart equipment, specialized services, research projects and advanced medical education this year. Your contribution gave sick and injured children treated at the Stollery Children’s Hospital a chance for a miracle and the strength to achieve it. (This list acknowledges donations of $1000 or greater for the period of April 1, 2009 – March 31, 2010. The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation has made every effort to ensure all donors have been properly acknowledged. Please phone 780.433.5437 with any corrections or omissions).
