Wakefield is on the River Calder and enjoys a long and exciting history that is brought to life through its many museums and galleries. The area has a deep-rooted history in coal mining and its National Coal Mining Museum transports visitors back in time, taking you underground to get a real feel for life ‘down the pits.’
The majestic splendour of the 75-metre-tall Wakefield Cathedral blends medieval and Victorian architecture and boasts the tallest spire in Yorkshire. With a stunning Victorian interior, the Cathedral provides the perfect place for quiet contemplation and tranquillity.
The area features many beautiful and historic buildings including the 15th century ruined fortress, Sandal Castle. The National Trusts Nostell Priory is a Palladian mansion with opulent furniture and textiles, including a fabulous collection of Thomas Chippendale furniture.
In addition, Castleford Museum, Wakefield Museum and Pontefract Castle continue to tell the fascinating story of Wakefield’s fascinating past.
ART, FESTIVALS & FUN DAYS OUT
There’s a lot to see and do in and around Wakefield. Art features prominently here and sculpture too, celebrating the works of two sculptural icons: Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. The prize-winning Yorkshire Sculpture Park, set in 500 acres of woodland, fields and lakes, provides a haven of inspiration. The Hepworth Museum has also won the Art Fund Museum of the Year award. The city hosts a bi-monthly Artwalk with pop-up exhibitions, live music, and poetry.
Festivals play a big part in Wakefield including the famous rhubarb festival. Long Division is an independent music festival, whilst Seaside in the City combines street theatre with an enormous sand pit. Wordfest celebrates the written word; there’s truly a festival for all seasons.
And for fun packed days out the list of opportunities is endless. Angler’s Country Park, Pugney’s Country Park, RSPB Fairburn Ings, Newmillerdam’s gnome roam and Farmer Copley’s corn maze all offer great days out with the family. To celebrate its long history, Wakefield Council organises a fabulous Rhubarb Festival in February that not only includes purveyors of fine food and drink but features a huge variety of other options too. You’ll find market stalls (with tastings of course), plus a week long programme of entertainment including cookery demonstrations, street performers, live comedy, and music, plus it has its own ‘Rhu-bar!”
And you’ll find delights such as rhubarb flavoured chocolate, chutneys, fudge and of course, many flavours of gin - there’s even been a rhubarb and salmon curry with a rhubarb and coriander sauce that is sure to delight your taste buds.

There are so many reasons to consider investing in a new build property, not least for their energy efficiency, reduced impact on the environment and green credentials.
In addition, purchasers are saving money on new build properties, when compared to older properties. The Home Builders Federation released a report earlier in the year that highlights, on average, new builds save £2,200 per year in energy costs.
