10 ELLIE JAMES - BLOOM

If you’ve visited Royston town centre recently then you will have noticed an exciting new addition. Bloom burst open their doors in November and the local community have visited in their droves to see what it’s all about. Owner and Mother of two, Ellie James, previously worked in events management then decided on a career change after having her two children; Alfie (9) and Ivy (5). She trained at Capel Manor and The Cambridge Flower School and then worked with other florists whilst building her own client base at the same time. In 2022, Ellie decided to take the leap and open her own florist shop and spent some time researching the best location for it. Aa a frequent visitor to Royston, she was charmed by exciting new businesses like Kooky Nohmad opening, residents who are keen to shop locally and a thriving market - it seemed like a no brainer!

11 STONES PEOPLE & PLACES Ideas

Ellie loves everything about floristry, with a real passion for flowers and creativity. She loves to meet new people, seeing their reactions when presented with their flowers and being involved in their special moments.

14 WILL CLAYTON - BURY LANE

40 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Bury Lane Farm Shop was founded in 1983, by Jeremy and Jenny Clayton. It all began with a modest caravan, selling produce from the farm. Fast forward to today and Bury Lane has grown into the bustling farm shop, cafe, fun barn and beach we all know and love.

We caught up with Managing Director, Will Clayton, who shared a little about the huge part he has played in Bury Lane’s transformation.

Will has been running Bury Lane for the last 4 years which, of course, means that he was at the helm when navigating through the challenges that the pandemic brought with it. Will and his team considered all aspects of running a business through the pandemic and were able to adapt accordingly, introducing free home deliveries and maximum distancing inside the shop. By bringing these measures in, they were able to safely continue to provide a service for their customers.

From the biggest challenge to the greatest success, Will’s proudest achievement to date was creating and launching the wonderfully enjoyable and safe play space for families; The Beach. This is a man made, outdoor beach area with buckets, spades and large adventure zone that is a delight for children of all ages.

sustainability

Will attributes his leadership skills to competency, planning and listening to well informed and well intentioned advisors. It is also crucial to be reactive to changing circumstances and stay ‘ahead of the curve’. The essential values, which run through the whole team, are honesty, accountability and teamwork. Will told us that he is very lucky to have such an amazing team at Bury Lane who embody these attributes and lead him.

Bury Lane has undergone a brand uplift for 2023, with a new look and website to showcase all that’s on offer from the gift hall, fun barn and cafe to the butchers, fishmongers and events.

WILL CLAYTON - BURY LANE

So what does the future hold for Bury Lane? Continued development as a destinantion where people of all ages can merrily spend a morning or an afternoon. Also, to further enhance the farm and retail sides of the business. They are already the UK leaders in sustainably growing houseplants and amongst the largest growers of peonies, lillies and agapanthus and want to continue to expand PYO activities and events so that everyone has the opportunity to learn more about modern horticulture, agriculture and sustainability.

18 ROYSTON LABELS

Way back in the 18th century, Britain was at the heart of the industrial revolution. Our nation experienced great success in the global economy, expanding rural manufacturing industries and rapid urbanisation, but what is industrial Britain like today and how are industrial businesses supporting local communities to thrive?

Whilst the scale of employment is much lower than it once was, the manufacturing industry is responsible for the employment of a large number of households in the local area. As we face hard times and challenges ahead we look to local employers for stability.

We were fortunate enough to catch up with one of these amazing businesses, right on our doorstep; introducing Royston Labels.

Established in 1984 and based on Royston’s industrial estate; Royston Labels is a state of the art production facility which supplies many UK manufacturers with their sustainably produced labels. Supplying household names such as Bodyshop, Hotel Chocolat and Autoglym, Royston Labels is a business that really puts the town on the map.

Owner and Managing Director, Paul Clayton has grown the business from one small production unit on Orchard Road Industrial Estate, Royston to a purpose renovated, ultra modern, high tech facility spanning over 65,000 sq. ft, reminiscent of the ‘Starship Enterprise’.

19 STONES PRESENT

Technology Revolution

Since it's inception, Royston Labels has evolved and adopted new technology solutions, where they now combine their knowledge of traditional print technologies with the latest in digital innovations. This approach has allowed them to continue to deliver the most cost-effective, high-quality packaging solutions for their customers. Royston Labels offer a full range of label production, both conventional and digital, as a tailor-made service for their clients. Their in-house design studio support with pre-press services, including artwork updates and colour retouching to ensure the highest standards are always achieved.

With the implementation of modern technology, Royston Labels have seen advances in label production such as label embellishments and the addition of foil and raised varnishes through digital devices and new processes. They are now able to provide many options of label embellishment, which can enhance the label design and they can flex the technology implementation to deliver the best results.

20 ROYSTON LABELS

Royston Labels’ sustainability strategy is based around a ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ ethos.

“We ensure that our team have extensive knowledge and experience of the complete supply chain and recycling process, so that they can advise customers on the most practical solutions. More recently we have been able to widen our range of recycled materials, some of these really do look the part and provide brand owners with a compelling story. An example would be papers made from Grape, Citrus fruits and Barley. We also have a paper that is made from 95% sugar cane waste with hemp and linen. We are also committed to being a zero to landfill site. Working with our recycling partners, all production waste is recycled including the waste matrix, glassine and PET liners, inks and rags.”

Local Community

Not only are Royston Labels a significant employer in the area, but they don’t stop there and have been actively working on other ways to impact their local community. Most recently they have been working on an outreach programme with the local council and King James Academy, helping students transition from education into the world of work. The world of work can be daunting and competitive, leaving students feeling unsure about how to approach their next steps in life, however Royston Labels are trying to bridge the gap by delivering a number of life skill sessions. Sessions such as ‘how to write a CV’ and ‘how to interview for success’ are there to provide the support and guidance needed to make be a big impact when looking to find work. Whilst guiding and supporting the next generation, Royston Labels are always on the look out for hard working and talented individuals, whilst they open their doors for student tours and offer work experience opportunities.

Royston Labels are a success story of the modern era of industrial Britain and one that we should be proud of, as a home grown organisation.

RESTAURANT & BAR

34 EIGHT - BALDOCK

The STONES team were thrilled to be invited to the soft opening of a brand new restaurant in Baldock. The restaurant, called Eight, was a warm and welcome sanctuary on a cold winter’s evening. We were welcomed by friendly staff, as soon as we entered and taken through to an intimate dining space, just beyond the bar area. The ambient lighting, chitter chatter of other guests and the background sounds from the open kitchen provides a comfortable, bistro vibe and the exciting atmosphere of the soft opening was palpable.

The menu is made up of an interesting range of seasonal and modern dishes, as well as some more traditional favourites. We sampled the steamed mussels with cider, lemon and fresh herbs, followed by Peterhead halibut and fillet steak. We even managed to squeeze in some desserts and the decadent chocolate pot with baileys cream was to die for! Every dish was crafted with the upmost attention to detail and we can’t wait to return to try the pork ribeye, which looked incredible too.

Chef patron, Kish, is already a familiar face in the area and shared his story with us; With years of experience as a chef, in prestigious London kitchens, Kish brought his talent to Hertfordshire. Like many hospitality workers, he lost his job during the pandemic, but not one to sit still he put his energy into building a tandoor oven in his garden. His neighbours soon caught wind of this and it wasn’t long before they started ordering a weekly takeaway! This is where the Baldock ‘Chef at Home’ was born and it burst on to the takeaway and private dining scene. Kish was providing private dining as well as Asian street food from a converted horse trailer.

DRIVE FOR SHOW

44 HANSON SERVICES GOLF DAY

PUTT FOR DOUGH

Whilst wandering the fairways, striking the ball and spending time with friends can be fun, when it’s combined with fundraising for an incredibly worthy cause, there is no better reason to get out on the course.

Introducing The Hanson Services Golf Day, brought to you by local brothers Tom, John and James Hanson, who have raised over £79,000 so far across four golf days, and looking to exceed their target of £100,000 following this year’s event. Most recently the day has been hosted at the historic heathland golf course of Royston, where the Texas Scramble competition is accompanied with a host of fun activities throughout, inclusive for all. Activities such as the ‘junior clubs challenge’, ‘fastest hole’, ‘hickory clubs’, as well as the more traditional competitions. Most importantly, all of this contributes to the amazing Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, ACT. The Addenbrooke’s hospitals deliver expert care for patients locally, regionally, and nationally and contribute to some of the most important biomedical research in the world today. Charitable donations fund high-tech equipment, new buildings, specialist staff, extra comforts, and vital research to find potential cures and help save lives.

All for a good cause

Working closely with contacts at ACT over the years, the brothers have been

able to identify required equipment or services that make a tangible difference to their service and the care of children requiring treatment at the Addenbrooke’s hospital. Having first raised enough money to purchase ancillary equipment for a dedicated children's PANDr ambulance, they have continued to raise money for care on arrival, Eye Gaze machines and most recently the salary of a Specialist Stem Cell nurse, for a whole year. This specialist hire has allowed the the nurse to attend patient's homes in order to minimise the stress on children and their carers, by removing the need to travel, in some cases to specialist stem cell centres as far as Bristol and Edinburgh.

"We have been overwhelmed by support since we launched the golf day and couldn’t be prouder of the amount of money that we have been able to raise for a charity that is so close to our hearts. On having a personal experience at the Addenbrooke’s children’s ward, it opened our eyes to the fantastic services already provided but also to services and equipment required, which would make such a huge difference to so many other families” - Tom Hanson, Owner and Managing Director, Hanson Services.

Joe Sagoe, Corporate Lead at Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, said: “Hanson Services’ support means more than words can say. We already have some of the best doctors and nurses in

the world at our hospitals, but we also want the best equipment for diagnosis, the best tools for surgery, and the best research to understand how to treat people, all in the best possible environment. This support can make all of that a reality.”

Support

“We are only able to achieve this with the unrelenting support of friends, family and local businesses. To name only a few; North Herts Surfacing, Prestige Flooring, Ensum Brown, The Green Man, Carlo & Co, Sanders & Jay, Field Interiors and so many more.  They stagger me with their willingness and kindness each year and they are remarkable. We are always keen for more individuals and businesses to be involved, particularly by donating big ticket auction prizes, like experiences, memorabilia and gifts, that will help to raise more money. We do also have some sponsorship opportunities available.” - Tom

Bethnal &Bec

Sometimes you just need time away from the day to day in order to step back, reflect and spend time with one another. With our busy lives it is easy to sometimes forget what it was like, to have time to be about just ‘you’, but we have found the perfect place to have a little ‘us time’…Welcome to Bethnal & Bec.

Tucked away in the Hertfordshire countryside, just outside of Buntingford lies a beautifully presented retreat ready to help you relax, unwind and give you a chance to rekindle the magic.

The luxury, adult only accommodations, two of which are dog friendly, comprise of stylish, quirky, interior design with furniture pieced together in such a way that it just works. Bright, rustic, modern, retro, it’s got it all, but together it makes a warm and welcoming stay to inspire all that choose to retreat.

It’s discerning intimacy is felt immediately with cosy nooks to spend time together, whether it’s the sofa playing at the retro games station or the kitchen island enjoying a meal. To the bedroom snuggling up watching a film, or overlooking the beautiful wild flower meadow from the hot tub; there is a space to enjoy together no matter the mood or occasion.

You can be forgiven for missing the themed room of the Foaling Box to start off with as you just see style, but you can see the subtle theme of the horse stable running throughout with boots, saddle rack, hay trough and stable bars weaved in and around the space.

47 STONES PLACES

Amazingly, 95% of the Foaling Box’s fixtures, fittings and furniture are reclaimed, repurposed, recycled or rescued, so it is clear sustainability is at the core of Bethnal & Bec. Standard recycling, reworked plastics and composting food are all encouraged during your stay. But it doesn’t just stop there. They inspire you as guests to follow their values and even take home some of the changes and ways of thinking. From the upcycled bath and sink unit, to the restored kitchen island from a 1950s science lab. Even the outside mismatched tiles that were going to the skip, create a unique and eclectic mix and all these touches are the making of this beautiful retreat.

They challenge you to stop and ask yourself...‘can I buy second hand or get the item fixed first?’.

If you’re looking for an adventure full of culture, incredible people and arguably some of the best food in the world, then a trip around the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy is the destination for you. Whether it’s as a solo traveller, a couple or with your family, the Amalfi Coast really has something to offer everybody.

Guest writer and photographer, Aniello Fruncillo, shares his personal view of this stunning place in the world and his top recommendations of specific places to visit along the way.

The beautiful city of Naples is the perfect place to start your journey. Naples is a bustling city, populated with kind hearted people who will welcome you with joy, laughter and a plate full of food. This historic city is not only governed by people but also by Vesuvio; a beautiful but brutal volcano which has marked it’s place in history with the devastating detruction of Pompeii in 79 AD. Naples is a city like no other with the alleyways leading you to it’s many tourist attractions full of mesmerising sights and smells. Lined with vendors selling mementos and small restaurants with menus full of ancient recipes that excite the tastebuds. As the Italians often do, sorrow is transformed into joy when you visit the remaining ruins of Pompeii. It’s a tourist hotspot and visitors have the opportunity to walk through the walls of history. It’s a real glimse into the past and a stark reminder of the power of Mother Nature.

Just a short train ride will take you to a small town called Vico. Vico is a little off the beaten track and not quite so widely known as some neighbouring towns. With views back over Napoli and Vesuvio, Vico is packed with charm and beauty and the ideal place to ‘dip your toe’ into the Amalfi Coast and get a taste of what’s to come.

Next up on the tour is the better known town of Sorrento; famous for it’s lemon groves and even more for the product of those lemons - Limoncello! This sweet and refreshing aperitif is a staple all across Italy but Sorrento is where it originated and if you’re looking to sample the best limoncello in the world then this is the place to do it.

Chances are, you will have seen photos of the next stop before; the iconic landscape in Positano is made up of coloured buildings firmly gripped to the mountain side, cascading down towards the deepest blue ocean and truly is picture perfect. To really take in the best view of this town, a boat trip is highly recommended and they are readily available from the marina.

To gain a different perspective on the Amalfi Coast, head up to Ravello where you get a birdseye view of the coastline. This town really is an explorer’s paradise with historic buildings and gardens peppered across the whole town. Add that to the spectacular views of the glistening ocean and you can see why it’s such a popular destination.

THE AMALFI COAST

To tie up this tour of the incredible Amalfi Coastline, and perhaps pick up your gifts and souvenirs, the seaside town of Viertri Sul Mare is renowned for pottery work with shops decorated with colourful, handmade mosaics. It is another vibrant gem nestled along the coastline and the perfect last stop.

If you’re inspired to go on your own Amalfi adventure, and you like to plan ahead, then go and see your local travel agent for advice and support with booking. However, if you’re more of of an adhoc traveller then don’t be afraid to speak with the locals as you go; they’re fountains of knowledge on the local area and are usually so friendly and willing to help.

Koselig {Koosh-Lee}

A feeling of deep contentment, provided by a person, place, or atmosphere, experiencing happiness and personal wellbeing through a combination of nature, companionship, and cosiness.

In our last edition we looked at loneliness, how it can creep in, how we can alleviate and even prevent it. A large portion of that comes down to quality social interactions. Here we explore both Hygge and Koselig, when it’s most important for these challenging times.

When we look at hygge (a Danish concept dating back to the 1800’s,) it focuses on taking time away from the hustle and bustle of life. It indicates a slowing of pace, relaxation, and enjoyment of life’s quieter pleasures in solitude. In 2017 we saw hygge become the latest trend in self-care, covering our social media platforms with images of flickering candles, cups of freshly brewed steaming coffee and cosy, comfy clothing – not to mention the mandatory fluffy socks! This quality of cosiness and comfort is well regarded as a characteristic of the Danish who are supposedly one of the happiest countries in the world when looking at contentment and wellbeing.

Koselig (a Norwegian concept) is concerned with the experiencing of happiness and personal wellbeing through a combination of nature, companionship, and cosiness.

Close your eyes – picture your happy place.

Let that feeling wash over you, let it fill every corner of your mind’s eye.

Focus on the strength and quality of that feeling.

Perhaps it’s a quiet log cabin in the woods, a roaring fire, with a sheepskin rug, a beautiful steak dinner with your favourite person, no phones or distraction. Imagine the sound of the leaves in

the wind, and the creak of the trees as they sway softly outside the windows. Deep and meaningful conversation flowing throughout the space, moments of silence, knowing looks, gentle flickers of the fire and soft music in the background. That feeling right there, that’s koselig.

Whilst hygge has an emphasis on solitude, and the pleasures gained from disconnecting from the external world, koselig looks at the deep feeling of comfort brought about by social interaction and adventure, particularly in relation to the great outdoors or activities. However, both concepts are focused around finding the joy in the little things and that can’t be a bad thing. So, who made the Norwegians experts on inner contentment? Well, no one really; however, they spend a lot of time in the dark throughout the year, and yet remain one of the happiest countries in the world, so that puts them in a pretty good spot for imparting their lifestyle habits with us!

When it’s cold, dark and damp all you might want to do to feel cosy is snuggle up at home on the sofa with a nice cuppa, and something bingeworthy on the TV – these moments of alone time are important too, it’s how we recharge, and energise ourselves. However, too much of this can drive those feelings of loneliness and disconnection that we explored in the last edition, feelings that can be intensified by the cold and darker days.  We gain a real sense of purpose from social interaction, be it fleeting or more meaningful that is directly linked to improved quality of life and ultimately longevity.

But what if we told you there can be real pleasure gained from being outside? Perhaps even therapeutic benefits? What if this is the perfect time as we head into spring for prioritising those important personal relationships with loved ones?

This is the time of year to go on that crisp walk and get into the daylight with a friend. Wrap up with layers, a sturdy thick soled boot, and go for that stroll in the countryside or even to your local market town. In Norway there is a saying – “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”, meaning there’s no excuse for not getting outdoors. Be outside, be present, but connecting to a person of note at the same time for a meaningful conversation is a great way of getting that social element of koselig in.

Being outdoors in the light whenever possible is important for our wellbeing. You’ve probably heard of SADs (seasonal affective disorder), and as we head out of the darker months into the beginnings of spring, it’s important to get into the natural light. Even if it’s not obviously sunny, you’ll still be topping up on Vitamin D, boosting those serotonin levels – feel good happy chemicals that boost your mood, improve your brain power, and help you to feel more alert. Aim for at least 20 minutes a day where possible.

nature, companionship,

So, you’ve embraced the benefits of being outdoors now what? Time for that hot chocolate covered in whipped cream (did you know that holding a hot drink in your hands promotes feelings of generosity and caring?), or a delicious lunch somewhere. Pick a local pub/venue that has board games, or a quiz, get your team mates together, ditch the devices and get cosy with the roaring fire, food in your belly and good quality social interaction. Feel that warmth within. Take time to sit down together with loved ones wherever the location or venue, the feeling of being with your people, the conversation, the ability to listen and laugh together. That’s where it’s at. Not to mention we’re still in the season for wholesome (or otherwise) comfort food – which can create feelings of connectedness and remind us of others. The sheer act of creating our own inner warmth and light brings about that deep sense of peace and contentment to which koselig refers, and why it is fundamentally important to our wellbeing.

You might be familiar with the Danish hygge aesthetic of muted tones of beige, a distinct lack of clutter, candles, and blankets, but what about bringing Koselig physically into your space? Koselig on the other hand is more about the mood within the space. Think candles and fires sure, but also slow, quiet music, ambient pools of light, getting off your devices, no other distractions, just fully present with the company you are keeping in that moment.

and cosiness

For Norwegian’s pretty much anything can and should be koselig. It’s that central to their lives. Be it a conversation, a person, a meal, or even their homes, it defines that thing that makes you feel a very real deep sense of warmth and contentment. Simple and comforting is how all things in life should be according to the Norwegian’s, and we all have the power to bring koselig into our daily lives. It is an active choice, created and set with intention, so now’s the time to get to grips with koselig and improve your wellbeing. Remember, socialising isn’t just for summer!

The Batman Shrinking

In one of many new arrivals on AppleTV, this one really stands out from the rest; starring Jason Segal and Harrison Ford like you’ve never seen him before. Both play therapists, one who is struggling to deal with the loss of his wife and relationship with his daughter and the other with his own health problems and family. Jimmy (Jason Segal) decides to take a somewhat unethical approach to his clients on the sofa and it seems to be working… or is it? This light hearted, emotional and humorous sit-com has some real laugh out loud moments, perfectly timed and delivered by both actors. It also plays on the heart strings and makes you think about doing things a little differently in your own life.

This latest adaptation of the DC comics Batman franchise is simply titled ‘The Batman’. Director Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield) has gone back to the original graphic novel for his inspiration. This dark and moody version is intense and full of character. It’s raw and edgy to the extreme. Robert Pattinson (Twilight saga) wears a very homemade looking suit and drives a self customised American muscle car. It’s not about the gadgets or the suit… it's about the emotion and the feelings. With some unbelievable performances from Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright and an unrecognisable Colin Farrell as the Penguin, this has to be one of the best Batman films to date.

This is Why Paramore

REVOLUTION RECORDS RECOMMEND

A lot has changed in the time Paramore have been away. It’s been five years since their most recent album, their last live show was in 2018, and the legacy of the ‘00s poppunk explosion has been reconsidered, with the band finally given the respect they’ve always deserved; a revival on TikTok has seen their music exposed to a new, furious generation. This new chapter is also the first since 2007’s breakout album ‘Riot!’ that hasn’t come with a line-up change and the press-led drama that’s always followed.

In the most recent release by the Californian band they really have gone back to where they belong. After reuniting with long time guitarist John Frusciante on their previous album ‘Unlimited Love’, released earlier last year, they have found their unmistakable and unhinged sound. With a proper mix of funk, soul, hip-hop and rock this album has it all. There are no real stand out songs or singles on this album, but that doesn’t matter, it certainly doesn’t distract from the overall listening experience. With John’s wailing guitar licks, Flea’s funk heavy bass, Chad’s rhythmic beats and the unique sound of Anthony on vocals, this is a fantastic album from start to finish.

Like fellow emo outsiders My Chemical Romance, Paramore are returning bigger than ever, but comeback single ‘This Is Why’ – taken from their new album of the same name, released in February – is a firm statement of purpose that does away with compromise.

Opening with a playful guitar line and rumbling drums that dance throughout the track (and echoes Wolf Alice's ‘Giant Peach’), there are nods to the ‘80s new wave that drove 2017’s 'After Laughter'. More than a continuation of what’s come before though, there’s a newfound urgency to the party-starting music that takes influence from their angsty days as scrappy pop-punkers. Paramore have praised Bloc Party and Foals recently and there’s a similar disco-stomp driving ‘This Is Why’.
