A real good roasting.
Average quantity of coffee consumed in a day: Just 1-2 cups is enough!
Favourite coffee origin: Colombia - there has been huge investment in Colombian coffee and the new processes over there are producing some really interesting flavours
Jamie Tanner, Head Roaster at Hot Numbers Roastery, shared his coffee journey with us and it all started when he was just 18 years old, working at a local coffee franchise. He admits to not even liking coffee for the first 4 years of his barista career! However, in hindsight, he puts that down to the poor quality of the coffee he had tried back then. He then moved on to a different role, with a more premium coffee brand, focussing more on the training and sales side of the process. It was with this particular brand that Jamie had his eyes
opened to a standard of coffee that he could finally get on board with and a true love for coffee finally commenced! Jamie came to Hot Numbers initially to work on the wholesale side of the business. Once he was settled in though, he was drawn to the coffee roasting and expressed an interest to founder Simon. Not one to pass up on a sign of passion from a staff member, Simon sent Jamie on the required training and he soon found his place within the Roastery. Today, Jamie combines his love and knowledge for coffee with science and
maths, to be the master of his craft. The role of Head Roaster requires an acute attention to detail and an understanding of the nuances and quirks of each different variety of coffee bean - Jamie posesses these skills in abundance and uses them to roast around 4-500kg of beans per day, twice per week. In 2023, Hot Numbers produced just shy of 40 tonnes of perfectly roasted coffee beans.

Something To Look
Look Forward To
We met with Andy Coldron, the co-founder of local charity ‘Something To Look Forward To’, to find out more about what led to starting this amazing charity and how people can get involved.
It all started back in 2007 when Andy's wife Fiona was devastatingly diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time. As anyone affected by cancer will know all too well, the diagnosis turned the family’s world upside down and they were thrown unwillingly into a new kind of life filled with hospital visits, treatments and fear of what was to come. They were enduring the grind of treatment and hospitals and it was one of those visits to hospital that gave them an idea. Clinique were giving out free skincare bags to patients on the cancer ward and were running special demonstrations on how to apply make up after the effects of chemotherapy and radiation had taken their toll. The recipients on the ward were thrilled to receive such a thoughtful gift and it really inspired the Coldrons to think about how other businesses may also want to run similar campaigns and give charitable donations, by way of gifts, to people going through the worst time of their lives.
Fiona did beat the cancer but sadly it returned in 2013, and this time it was incurable. It was in this darkest hour that Fiona was being made redundant and felt she needed a new focus. Fiona had worked for a charity previously and so had some knowledge on how to set up. With Andy’s skills as a web designer coming to good use too - they created ‘Something To Look Forward To’. The idea behind the charity is very simple; businesses
such as hotels, restaurants, events venues etc donate experiences and gifts which the charity then distributes out to people who are financially affected by cancer.
Cancer poverty is a topic that receives very little coverage in the media and, unless it’s something you have unfortunately had first-hand experience in, it’s easy to overlook. The hard fact is that for most cancer patients, having to stop working is inevitable at some point along their journey and this significantly impacts the household income. The bills still come in, the family still needs to eat and all of the little treats (that you really need now more than ever) are the first things to go.
‘Something To Look Forward To’ facilitate treats, experiences and breaks to provide light relief and the opportunity to make positive memories in what can be a very dark time.
Fiona lost her fight to cancer in 2021 and had worked tirelessly through her last years to build this incredible legacy with her husband and daughter, Francesca. Next year will mark the 10 year anniversary for ‘Something To Look Forward To’ and plans are already underway to celebrate over £2m worth of gifts being donated through the charity.
Andy, Francesca and the team have been working hard to raise awareness and bring more donors and gifts on board so if you would like to get involved, we would urge you to get in touch and be a part of something amazing. Even if you don’t have a gift or experience to donate, they are looking to fill places in the Cambridge Half Marathon 2025 and London Landmarks Half Marathon 2025 as well as corporate sponsorship.
HOT NUMBERS
Arguably the biggest name in Cambridgeshire coffee, Hot Numbers has taken the area by storm since it was first established in 2011. We caught up with founder, Simon Fraser to learn about the origins of Hot Numbers and how it has grown into the bold brand we know and love today.
Simon shared that the Hot Numbers seed was planted in his brain some years back, when he was studying the saxophone in Melbourne, Australia. Alongside his studies, he was indulging in his other passion; coffee, by working as a barista. When he arrived in Australia, Simon already had a well established interest and talent for
engineering so was unsure of what his future may hold at this point. One day a conversation between Simon and his boss at the coffee shop, resulted in some wise words that stayed truly lodged in his mind; “I don’t know what you will become in the future, but you have a clear passion for three things; music, coffee and engineering. Whatever you end up doing, you should really try to combine them in some way”.
With this in mind, Simon headed back to the UK with an idea… He discussed the idea with a friend, Max Rees, who owned a record shop on Kingston Street, Cambridge, who was so supportive of the idea that he agreed Simon could
use the name of his shop for it - Hot Numbers. With jazz music always playing, the coffee always exceptional and the complexities of in-house coffee bean roasting, Simon had managed to combine his three passions to create something truly special.
The original idea was never to expand further than one venue but they had to seek larger premises not just once, but twice, to accomodate the unprecidented success of the business and to make space for the impressive roastery.
As well as providing coffee for their own venues, the roastery also provides a wide range of beans for other businesses, on
BEAN TO CUP
a wholesale basis. With Simon’s passion for bringing great coffee to consumers far and wide, he had identified an area that was just crying out for help. Office workers have always been the notorious sufferers of terrible coffee, often tied into long contracts with poor provisions, and Simon wanted to find a way to resolve the situation. After tirelessly researching different ‘bean to cup’ machines on the market, he finally came across a system worthy of the Hot Numbers beans, and is busy supplying it out to workplaces in the area. True heroes amongst coffee-loving office workers, Simon and his team supply the machines, the masterfully roasted coffee beans and maintenance too.
“Not only do these bean to cup machines make a great coffee but they even tell the origin story of that particular variety of bean, on the digital display screen!”
At the Roastery in Shepreth, there is a dedicated space just for these machines to be demonstrated, tried and tested as well as full barista training and coffee workshops for businesses and interested groups. The workshop room really is a sight to behold with counters full of every type of grinder, frother and compressor you could imagine and passionate professionals ready to walk you through each step of creating the perfect cup. You can even reserve the space upstairs and enjoy some
sourdough pizzas together, from the inhouse bakery, after skillfully mastering your new craft!
Hot Numbers; the ever-popular and trendy coffee shop, has been on our radar for some time and it was so exciting to learn more about what else goes on behind the scenes. We can safely say that this is a business clearly led from a place of passion and care - it shines through absolutely everything they do.

a mixture of luxury elegance with just the right amount of urban edginess
Whether you’re staying at The Turing Locke or not, you will certainly want to pay a visit to the newest addition to the Cambscuisine restaurant family: The Astronomer. Both The Turing Locke and The Astronomer names pay homage to Alan Turing. The famed mathematician, computer scientist, philosopher, and more, is synonymous with Cambridge and he had a particular interest in astronomy.
Whether it's a coffee catch-up, leisurely lunch or a celebration dinner, The Astronomer caters to every occasion with finesse. We were very interested to find out about the launch of their delicious new brunch menu, which gives us the perfect excuse for a return visit!
On arrival, Tiago and his team were on hand to make us feel welcome and led us to a table in the skillfully designed restaurant. With a modern industrial feel there is a mixture of luxury elegance with just the right amount of urban
edginess, for balance. Boasting high ceilings and huge windows around the sides of the room, this venue feels spacious and is flooded with warm and natural light whilst still managing to maintain an intimate and cosy feel by breaking up the space with booths, tables and greenery.
We noted that the bar was well stocked with a carefully curated selection of draught beers and wines amongst a variety of other options, so something to wet everyone’s whistle! After ordering drinks and taking in our surroundings, it was time to focus on the menu. It truly was a challenge to make a choice with such a delectable offering of dishes, crafted from the finest, freshest seasonal ingredients. From classic favourites through to dishes with more of an unusual twist, it was

clear that the menu had been created with an abundance of thought, skill and consideration. Even the side dishes were carefully crafted and certainly not the afterthought they can be.
Whilst choosing, we ordered some nibbles for the table. The standout favourite was the Pork Crackling with apple & gooseberry sauce, which was just as mouthwatering as it sounds! The sweet and sharp sauce perfectly balanced the rich intensity of the crispy crackling. Main courses included a buttermilk chicken burger which was served in a delicious sourdough bun and the miso glazed cod loin with gnocchi and an incredible coconut dashi (a type of broth) which tasted phenominal. When it came to dessert time, we had to battle to find room so settled on sharing a pudding that we just couldn’t say no to; the Black Forest Gateaux. This childhood favourite is seldom found on a menu these days so we seized the opportunity and were certainly not disappointed!
In conclusion, both The Turing Locke and The Astronomer offer more than just accommodation and dining experiences — they offer a warm embrace, a sanctuary from the everyday, and a chance to create lasting memories. So why settle for ordinary when you can experience the extraordinary? Discover your own personal oasis in Eddington, just a stone’s throw from Cambridge City Centre.

Whilst gathering content for our Cambridge United feature, in Vol.11 of STONES, we couldn’t help but have our design eye caught by their proud partners BrewBoard. Since then, we have been out and about in the Cambridge area and have seen the BrewBoard name popping up everywhere. It got us thinking about this local brewery with their quirky branding and ever-growing presence and wondering what their story is. So we got in touch and took a trip over to the brewery and tap room in Harston to meet the owners and find out more.
It all started with co-founder Stuart Chambers, who cut his teeth brewing beer at Dragon Forge brewery in Audley End. His brewing knowledge was expanding and his beer was gaining a lot of attention. Off the back of this success, Stuart decided that now was the time to start brewing beer of his own and assembled a team of like-minded people to start transforming his vision into a reality. Enter Oliver Pugh with his design and branding expertise and financial director, Paul Archer. This trio of co-founders got the keys to the premises in Harston on January 1st 2017 and after 6 months of hard graft, stripping back and getting the building fit for use as a brewery, they commissioned and installed their first brew kit in Summer 2017. The first beer went to market that Autumn and the business was gaining momentum at a rapid pace. As was the case for many businesses, the pandemic couldn’t have come at a worse time. The team were faced with an ultimatum; they could either mothball the business and hunker down, to wait and see what fate had in store, or they adapt and give it their everything to make it work despite the pandemic. Well, this being a story of brewing heroism in the face of adversitywe’re thrilled to say they opted for the latter!
In hindsight, it would seem the Universe was in favour of these guys making beer as, despite solely producing kegs up until then, they had decided to buy an expensive canning line and have it shipped in from Canada. They had started to question themselves on whether this was a good investment considering they barely produced any canned beer, but during lockdown this kit became a lifeline for BrewBoard. With pubs and restaurants closed they needed to focus their attention on domestic supply and came up with their ‘24 in 24’ campaign where if you ordered 24 cans, they would deliver it within 24 hours or you would get it for free! This kept the team busy and also gave local people a great reason to really get behind the brand.
Post pandemic, BrewBoard were ready to push forward with the business and started collaborating with other businesses and organisations such as Cambridge Country Club, The Gonville Hotel and notably Cambridge United where they exclusively supply ‘Abbey Gold’ to thousands of fans, amongst other BrewBoard options.
Back at the Harston Tap Room, many happy customers have attended events over recent years and there are more in the pipeline. The event set up has needed to adapt as, due to an increase in demand, the brewing kit has taken over most of the space, meaning the built in bar and seating area had to go. But, fear not, the BrewBoard ‘Beer Bus’ is just outside and has up to 10 kegs on the go at any time! A new Tap Room is set to open in Autumn, on Pease Hill in Cambridge, and the search is underway for new brewery premises to expand into. So, keep an eye out for more details on those. BrewBoard are heavily involved in events and hospitality venues in and around the Cambridge area and supply all over the country, as well as internationally, so if you haven’t sampled this local beer offering yet, get it to the top of your to-do list and see what all the fuss is about!

Hawaii. Madeira. Europe’s Hawaii.
Just a four-hour flight from London is one of Europe’s top hidden gems - Madeira. It sits in the North Atlantic Ocean boasting jaw-dropping, volcanic landscapes, stunning subtropical vegetation and enchanting waterfalls. Think Jurassic Park, but minus the dinosaurs!
This sub-tropical climate consists of gorgeously hot summers and mild, sunny winters making it an incredible holiday location, no matter the season. You can enjoy breathtaking hikes in the mountain ranges, natural swimming spots and an open-armed, relaxed culture.
With two-thirds of the island classified as a protected area, it is home to rare plants and bursting with wildlife. You can expect incredible and diverse scenery to be the backdrop to your holiday memories - and photos!
Madeira is a natural paradise, but also has activities to suit the whole family. If you’re looking for excitement, you can try the well-known Monte sledges where locals meet you at the staircase of Monte Church for a wild ride! The sledges look like wicker baskets crossed with Santa’s sleigh and are raced down through the town’s beautiful cobbled streets. You’ll pass picturesque cafes, shops and restaurants during the 2km journey with speeds up to 40km/hhold on tight!
Madeira is also the home town of football celebrity, Cristiano Ronaldo. If you want to find out more about his exceptional career then head to the amazing CR7 museum full of memorabilia, including more than 100
trophies for you to peruse. It sits right on the beautiful coast of Funchal with stunning views for all to enjoy.
The island is also home to many species of wonderful marine life including Bottlenose Dolphins, Sperm Whales and turtles. There are several viewpoints around the island where you can look out for them, including the scenic Ponta de Pargo lighthouse which offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the Atlantic. If you prefer to get up close though, there are several boat trips which will take you to well-known dolphin and whale feeding spots. These unforgettable experiences start at just €30pp and most will take you out for 3 hours to ensure you get plenty of time with these spectacular creatures.
Hiking:
Over the past few years, seeing the sunrise at Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak, has become one of the most popular pastimes on the island. The hike is not for the faint of heart but the views from above the clouds are truly awesome. The trek takes 1.5 hours to complete and takes you through the dry mountain ranges, along the coast and to what feels like an entirely new world.
There are hiking trails dotted all over the island, many of which are suitable for families with younger children. All of which have breathtaking views. Many tourists choose shorter hikes for their children and even babies and toddlers can enjoy the treks in carriers.
Waterfalls:

A pieceunique of history
This imposing Grade I listed family residence sits at the very heart of Royston and is instantly recognisable to anyone that knows the local area. From its original inception in the 1600s, this Jacobean merchant's house is steeped in history and awash with intricate design and architecture. The beautifully restored ceiling murals offer a striking uniqueness to the property and are what gives the property its listing, alongside the hand crafted and elaborate mantlepieces that were completed in 1635.
Sat behind wrought iron fencing, the grandeur of the Georgian façade is clear to see. The sprawling internal accommodation is set over four floors which includes a cellar level which offers storage and the housing for the boiler system and all under pitched tiled roofs. The front door leads directly into the grand entrance hall, an open space with high ceilings, panelling and an inglenook fireplace which sets
the theme throughout the home. Leading directly off of the entrance hall is one of the two main sitting rooms which has been restored to a high standard and is fully panelled with intricate hard wood flooring all set around a feature fireplace. The second sitting room offers direct access to the rear gardens as well as a cloakroom area with a wash basin, which could then offer ground floor bedroom facility if required. The formal dining room faces to the rear and sits alongside the kitchen which comprises of wall and floor storage, an integrated sink and an Aga located within the chimney breast as well as conventional cooking facilities. The utility room is located opposite the kitchen and works well as a boot room, offering further storage and plumbing for laundry facilities. The office and the old dispensary (when part of the property was run as a chemist) is accessed via the dining room. The ground floor is completed by two separate cloakrooms, one located by the entrance hall and the second by the office.
Jacobean
[ jak-uh-bee-uhn ]
The Jacobean era was the period in English and Scottish history that coincides with the reign of James VI of Scotland who also inherited the crown of England in 1603 as James I.[1] The Jacobean era succeeds the Elizabethan era and precedes the Caroline era. The term "Jacobean" is often used for the distinctive styles of Jacobean architecture, visual arts, decorative arts, and literature which characterized that period.
The grand turning staircase leads to the first floor, and at half level which gives access to the family bathroom comprising of a panel bath with shower over, two wash basins and low level WC. On the first floor are five exceptional double bedrooms. The two front bedrooms benefit from beautiful ceiling murals that have been extremely well maintained, with three of the five bedrooms being fully panelled. The principal bedroom offers an en suite bathroom with a sunken bath, walk in shower, wash basin, separate cloakroom area with low level WC and further wash basin. Located between bedroom three and four is an additional staircase which gives access to the mid landing between the first and second floors. The main staircase continues up to the second floor to an additional further four double bedrooms, all benefitting from the character of exposed beams throughout. Bedroom six has the added benefit of an en suite bathroom comprising of a bath with shower over, low level WC and wash basin. Bedroom eight is unique as it offers a mezzanine level and additional living area which could be used as a dressing room.
Outside, the home sits within a plot extending to approximately 0.64 of an acre. A double gated private driveway sits to the side of the property and leads to an off road parking area for a number of vehicles. The private garden is enclosed by walls and offers privacy creating a great sense of seclusion. The lawn runs through the middle of the garden and is flanked by mature trees and shrubs.

From where we left off last time, turn left along the main road then left again down Fish Hill (no prizes for guessing what was once sold in this area!). At the top of Fish Hill stands the Market Hill Rooms, which was once a school for non-conformist families but is now used as a community space.
Walk down the hill until you reach the impressive, double park gates. There, you will find a plaque explaining that where the gates stand today is actually the third location they have been erected. The first location they were used at was Pickering Manor in Whaddon, which was demolished in the early 1800s. After that, they were used for a house in Baldock Street and then were finally presented to be used in their current location in 1961.
Enter, by the gates, in to Priory Memorial Gardens which is dedicated in memory to the Roystonians who fell in WW2.
The Idea of You Hell Jumpers
This eye-opening documentary that delves into the lives of overseas volunteers in Ukraine, who have taken on the perilous task of rescuing civilians, without military support, stranded in the heart of the conflict. These volunteers, aptly nicknamed "Hell Jumpers", are not just risking their lives; they are driven by an unwavering commitment to humanity and a determination to make a difference in one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
The film follows the story of Chris Parry and the various volunteers he meets as he journeys to Ukraine. Upon arrival, he joins forces with a diverse group of civilian 'evacuators' dedicated to helping people escape their homes amidst the chaos. As the group's missions grows increasingly perilous on the front line, they began sharing footage of their daring rescues on TikTok and Instagram, capturing the attention and admiration of a global audience.
Through extraordinary first-person footage, the documentary provides viewers with a raw and immersive experience of the volunteers' daily reality; surviving on their resourcefulness, bravery, and the bonds they form with one another. The narrative is a compelling mix of courage, passion, love, and the inevitable losses that come with such high-stake missions. An unforgettable portrayal of modernday heroism, shedding light on the unsung heroes who embody the true spirit of selflessness in times of war.
The days of classic romantic comedy films like Pretty Woman are long gone. With their cheesy plot lines and worse still cheesy lines, this film manages to miss all of those and hits the spot perfectly.
When a single mum (Anne Hathaway) takes her daughter to a concert to see her favourite childhood boy band, August Moon. While looking for a toilet accidentally finds herself in a chance meeting with the lead singer of the band, Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) they immediately hit it off and begin an unexpected romance.
His fame, their difference in age and lifestyles soon become an issue for them and the people closest to them. But, as with all good romantic comedies, love finds a way. This soft, funny and kind hearted film leaves you with a feeling of warmth and happiness, and a message that, no matter what the the circumstances the heart wants what the heart wants.

Noah Kahan is a gifted musician with a rich voice and silky tone, who moves eloquently from note to note delivering a blend of indie, folk, pop, and country sounds. His third studio album 'Stick Season' was not planned as a full length album but after writing the song titled 'Stick Season' he was inspired and the album came together.
The album is heavily influenced by the changing seasons where he grew up in Vermont and his childhood memories.
The infamous track 'Stick Season' shot Noah to fame and has spread far and wide across the globe, but we urge you to go deeper into this album that is personable, relatable and can make you feel less alone and find a sense of belonging.
Nowhere seems to hold consensus as the second-best record of the shoegaze era, and with very good reason. Undeniably, it's Ride's zenith -- dense, tight, hypnotic. "Seagull" serves as a dynamic opener; after a couple seconds of light feedback, bassist Steve Queralt kicks in and is soon followed by Andy Bell and Mark Gardener's guitar twists and Loz Colbert's alternately gentle and punishing drumming. After the upbeat "Kaleidoscope," the record falls into a tempo lull but patience reveals a five-song suite of sorts, full of lovely instrumental passages that are punctuated with violent guitar bursts. The escalating "Polar Bear" is a high point, featuring expertly placed drum rolls from Colbert. The tempo picks up for "Vapour Trail," a wistful pop song with chiming background guitars galore and mournful strings to close it out. "Taste" is one of their finest pure pop numbers; the simmering "Here and Now" rates well, and the five-minute "Nowhere" is a delicious apocalyptic freak out.
