Health is Wealth

If you were offered a million pounds today—but it meant you wouldn’t wake up tomorrow—would you take it? The answer is simple. Because no amount of money is worth more than another day, another chance, another moment. That’s why health is the greatest wealth we have—without it, nothing else truly matters.

Yet, we often put it on the back burner, promising to start ‘next week’ or waiting for the ‘perfect time.’ But real wellness isn’t about quick fixes or trends—it’s about valuing ourselves enough to make choices that support our body and mind, not just for start of the year, but for life.

In this issue, we highlight the local businesses, experts, and practices that help us invest in our greatest asset—our wellbeing. From fitness and nutrition to mental health and holistic therapies, we explore what it means to truly thrive.

So, let’s rethink what wealth really means. Because when you take care of your health, you’re already richer than you think.

For Nick Lower, fitness has always been more than just exercise—it’s about empowering people to move better, feel stronger, and build lasting habits. With over 15 years of experience as a personal trainer, Nick has worked with everyone from beginners to Hollywood stars, continuously refining his approach to offer bespoke coaching that delivers real results.

Personal Trainer to Community Builder

Nick's journey started in 2009 when he founded re:bourne fitness & nutrition. Over the years, he earned a reputation as a trusted trainer, even working with Simon Pegg to prepare for physically demanding film roles. However, Nick’s own life challenges and a personal health battle reshaped his approach to coaching and deepened his belief in the power of resilience. "That experience changed my perspective completely," he says. "It reinforced the importance of resilience, of focusing on both body and mind, and how fitness can be life-changing in so many ways." Through his own journey, Nick has not only come back stronger, and even more determined to make a positive impact.

Apex Pilates & Personal Training: A Dream Realised

In May 2024, Nick opened Apex Pilates & Personal Training in the village of Litlington, just outside Royston. Set against a stunning countryside backdrop, Apex isn’t just a fitness studio; it’s a space where people can thrive, not just physically, but emotionally too. “When people come to Apex, they’re not just training their bodies—they’re developing resilience and confidence,” Nick explains.

Nick’s calming, knowledgeable, and reassuring coaching, making clients feel at ease as they work through reformer Pilates or small group personal training. He focuses on making sure each person feels supported in their fitness journey, no matter their starting point.

With big plans for the future, Nick is determined to make Apex the leading pilates and personal training studio in the region. "This is just the beginning," he says. “I want Apex to be a place where people grow stronger in every way, and I’m excited to continue watching our community thrive.”

Leading Thriplow’s Daffodil Weekend with Community Spirit

In the heart of Thriplow, Cambridgeshire, The Thriplow Daffodil Weekend has become one of the region’s most cherished annual events, attracting thousands of visitors eager to experience the breathtaking displays of golden blooms and the warm community spirit. Behind the scenes, ensuring everything runs smoothly, is Paul Earnshaw, Chairman of the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend Committee.

From Corporate Sustainability Strategy to Community Leadership Paul has spent over 11 years at Tesco, building an impressive career in packaging sustainability. He first joined the company in 2011, drawn by its dynamic work environment and the opportunity to make a tangible impact on sustainability and the way people shop. Over the years, he has taken on leadership roles that require meticulous planning, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that have proved invaluable in his work with the Daffodil Weekend.

“When you’ve spent years shaping strategy in a fast-paced retail environment, you learn how to handle complexity and bring people together towards a common goal,” Paul explains. “Leading the Daffodil Weekend uses a lot of those same skills, but on a much more personal level—it’s about working with people who passionately care about their village and its traditions.”

A Decade of Dedication to

Thriplow’s

Iconic Event

Paul first got involved with the Daffodil Weekend over 15 years ago, initially as a volunteer. Drawn by the event’s rich history and the sense of togetherness it fostered, he gradually took on more responsibilities before stepping up as chairman, a position he has held for over 10 years now. “It started with just lending a hand, but once you’re part of something like this, it’s hard to step away,” he says with a smile.

Now, as chairman, Paul considers it a privilege to lead an event that means so much to so many people. “This isn’t just a flower festival—it’s a celebration of everything that makes Thriplow special. It brings people together, supports charities, and showcases the best of our local community.”

What He Loves Most About the Daffodil Weekend

With this year’s event fast approaching, Paul is as excited as ever. For him, the best part is seeing the village come alive. “There’s nothing quite like that first morning when the stalls are set up, the roads are lined with golden daffodils, and you see families arriving, ready to make new memories,” he shares. “It’s a moment when all the hard work pays off.”

The team effort behind the event is also something Paul deeply values. “It’s incredible to see how the entire village pulls together. Every single person plays a part, whether it’s planting daffodils, baking cakes, managing logistics, or welcoming visitors. That’s what makes this event so special— it belongs to everyone, it is Britain at its best.”

An Award-Winning Event That Sells Out Fast!

The Thriplow Daffodil Weekend’s enduring success was recently recognised when it was named ‘Best Local Event’ by STONES Magazine—a testament to the dedication of the volunteers, villagers, and supporters who make it happen year after year.

If you’re planning to visit this year, don’t leave it too late! “We usually sell out in the weeks leading up to the event,” Paul warns. “Book your tickets early and come experience the magic for yourself.”

For Paul and the entire Thriplow community, the Daffodil Weekend is more than just an event—it’s a legacy, a labour of love, and a celebration of everything that makes this village so special.

Japanese Experience the Magic of a Head Spa at The Ruby Rooms

Imagine a treatment that doesn’t just pamper your hair, but rejuvenates your scalp, eases tension in your head, neck, and shoulders, and leaves you floating in a state of deep relaxation. The Japanese Head Spa is exactly that—a luxurious ritual that goes beyond the surface to restore balance, improve scalp health, and uplifts your sense of well-being.

Nestled in a charming period building on Royston High Street, The Ruby Rooms offers a cosy, intimate retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. From the moment you arrive, the space feels like a sanctuary—welcoming, tranquil, and thoughtfully designed to transport you into a state of calm. The warm professionalism of the staff ensures you feel completely at ease, creating an indulgent experience from start to finish. A note for visitors: while the loft treatment room adds to its charm, the steps may present an accessibility challenge. However, for those who can navigate it, The Ruby Rooms is a hidden gem offering an unforgettable escape.

Tailored to You: The Personal Touch of the Japanese Head Spa

The true magic of the Japanese Head Spa at The Ruby Rooms lies in its bespoke approach. Your journey begins with a thorough scalp analysis, using a high-tech screen to assess the health of your scalp and hair. This ensures that your treatment is fully personalised to your specific needs—whether that’s dryness, sensitivity, or a lack of volume. Based on your unique scalp profile, the therapist will choose the perfect aromatherapy oils to enhance the experience. For those seeking a deeper dive into the treatment, the scalp analysis is an optional service, but it’s included in the 90-minute experience (which we highly recommend). Post-treatment, you’ll get another analysis, where you can see the visible improvements firsthand.

A Multi-Sensory Experience

After your consultation, you’ll be guided into the relaxation room, where the soothing experience truly begins. As you settle into the treatment bed, a heated face mask is applied, and a tuning fork rings through the air, signalling the start of your journey. With each sound, touch, and scent, your senses are heightened—gentle trickling water, the soft flutter of peacock feathers across your face, shoulders, and arms, all contribute to a deeply calming experience.

The first step of the treatment is a scalp cleanse, gently removing impurities, excess oils, and product buildup. This is followed by a therapeutic massage, where expert hands work across pressure points to increase circulation, ease tension, and promote relaxation. This massage not only creates a sense of calm but also helps reduce hair shedding, prevents hair loss, and stimulates healthy hair growth.

Deep Nourishment for Your Hair and Scalp

Next comes the deep-conditioning mask, applied specifically to address your hair’s unique needs. Steam is used to help the mask penetrate deeply, offering maximum hydration and nourishment to your hair. The treatment continues with bamboo hair brushing and scalp stimulation using Gusha tools and specialised scalp brushes, designed to boost circulation and promote scalp health.

The experience concludes with a refreshing rinse, leaving your hair feeling silky, shiny, and completely rejuvenated.

The Japanese Head Spa at The Ruby Rooms is more than just a beauty treatment; it’s a therapeutic journey that nurtures both your hair and your sense of inner peace. Whether you’re addressing scalp concerns, improving hair health, or simply looking to indulge in a deeply relaxing experience, this treatment is a true rarity to escape from the daily grind, offering not only a boost to your hair but to your overall well-being.

If you’re ready to treat yourself to something extraordinary, The Ruby Rooms is waiting to welcome you. Step inside, let the world fade away, and experience the magic of a Japanese Head Spa that awakens all of your senses and will undoubtedly become a regular part of your wellness routine.

Whether you’re a guest staying on-site or a visitor dropping in, this updated gem promises a relaxed yet stylish dining experience.

Following its recent makeover, the restaurant now boasts a fresh menu with a focus on “a fresh culinary concept.” Packed with creative and delicious small plates, it’s designed to be perfect for sharing or savouring individually. The restaurant strikes a perfect balance of being special yet approachable, ideal for everything from romantic dinners, to catching up with friends or celebrating special occasions.

One of the things we loved most about the restaurant is how it seamlessly blends the old with the new. While it retains the historic character that makes Cambridge so unique, the refurbishments bring a modern, fresh feel that keeps it vibrant and inviting. With a Bentley parked outside, ready to whisk visiting guests off to explore the city, the scene exudes an extra touch of sophistication. But don’t let that intimidate you, the restaurant is warm and welcoming to all, with exceptional food, attentive service, and value that feels perfectly balanced for the quality on offer.

WHY HOME EXTENSIONS ARE THE KEY TO A BALANCED LIFESTYLE

In the modern age, the home is no longer just a place to live—it’s a sanctuary. As we move further into 2025, the importance of creating spaces that promote health, wellness, and overall well-being is at the forefront of many homeowners' minds. One of the most impactful ways to enhance your living space is through home extensions. Not only do they provide extra room, but they can also be designed with your health and happiness in mind.

The Wellness Revolution in Home Design

From air quality to natural light, there’s no shortage of ways our environment can influence our physical and mental well-being. In the past, renovations often focused solely on aesthetics or increasing property value. But today, there’s a shift toward creating spaces that improve how we feel in our homes—spaces that foster relaxation, creativity, and connection.

In 2025, we’re seeing more homeowners prioritise health-centric renovations, particularly in the form of extensions. These additions can be tailored to suit a wide variety of needs, whether it’s a home gym, a wellness retreat, a dedicated work-from-home space, or simply a more open and breathable layout.

We spoke with Joe from Octa Design & Build, who shared ideas and practical approaches for creating wellnessfocused home extensions in 2025.

“A

& Build

Increased Natural Light and Ventilation

One of the easiest ways to improve your home’s wellness factor is by optimising natural light and air circulation. Extensions are the perfect opportunity to add larger windows, skylights, or even glass walls that bring the outdoors in. Natural light helps regulate our circadian rhythm, boosts vitamin D, and has been shown to improve mood and productivity. Better ventilation, meanwhile, can help eliminate indoor pollutants and allergens, leading to improved respiratory health.

Flexible Spaces for Mental and Physical Health

The rise of working from home, coupled with an increased focus on mental health, has led to a demand for multifunctional spaces. A home extension can be designed to create areas for both relaxation and activity. A dedicated yoga or meditation room, for example, can serve as a sanctuary for stress relief. Or, if you’re into fitness, a home gym extension can make it easier to stay on track with your physical health. Having a space specifically designed to foster wellbeing means you’re more likely to make time for your mental and physical health on a daily basis.

Velux is more than just a window. So many of our customers say 'why didn’t they put that there in the first place?'. If you have a space that would suit a VELUX, or a project you need support in with VELUX placement and design, get in touch today and we will be happy to help."

Connection with Nature

Biophilic design is another trend gaining momentum in 2025. By incorporating natural materials like wood, stone, or plants into your home extension, you can create a soothing atmosphere that nurtures both body and mind. Large glass doors that open up to a garden can help blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing for a deeper connection with nature. This seamless flow creates a tranquil environment where you can unwind after a long day, reducing stress and increasing overall happiness.

More Space to Unplug

In an increasingly digital world, finding space to disconnect from technology is essential for mental wellness. A home extension allows for the creation of spaces where you can unplug and recharge. Consider adding a cosy reading nook, a spa-like bathroom, or even a quiet lounge area free from screens. These peaceful retreats provide the perfect environment to relax, meditate, or just enjoy some quiet time with your thoughts.

Sustainable Design for LongTerm Health

A growing number of homeowners are choosing to make their renovations not just health-conscious, but environmentally friendly as well. Sustainable building materials, energyefficient appliances, and eco-friendly insulation are just a few ways a home extension can help create a space that’s both good for you and good for the planet. By using non-toxic paints, repurposing materials, and installing energy-saving systems, you can create a healthier home environment while also reducing your carbon footprint.

Tips for Planning Your Health-Focused Extension

Prioritise Functionality Over Style

While it’s tempting to go all-in on the latest design trends, remember that a home extension should first and foremost serve your needs. Think about how you want to live in the space—whether it’s for exercise, relaxation, or work—and design accordingly.

Work with a Builder Who Understands Your Vision

Octa Design & Build prioritise building strong relationships with customers, ensuring a collaborative approach to bringing your dreams to life. Their comprehensive project design services complement their building expertise and can offer valuable insights into creating a space that meets your wellness goals.

Don’t Forget About Your Outdoor Space

Outdoor extensions, such as patios or garden rooms, can provide additional areas for physical and mental rejuvenation. Incorporating outdoor elements into your extension can expand your living area and enhance your overall well-being.

Stay Within Your Budget

While wellness should be a priority, it’s also important to remain mindful of your budget. A well-planned extension can provide lasting value, but it’s essential to prioritise what’s most important to you and avoid overspending on features that may not add to your health and wellness in the long run.

Why Now is the Perfect Time to Renovate

In 2025, health is more than just a buzzword—it’s a lifestyle. As much as self-care and maintaining balance are so important, our homes should also reflect that. A thoughtfully designed home extension not only increases your living space but also supports a healthier, happier life. By focusing on natural elements, sustainability, and multifunctional design, you can create a space that nurtures both mind and body.

If you’re ready to take the next step in creating a home that supports your wellness journey, Octa Design & Build is here to help. Together, you can design the home of your dreams— one that prioritises your well-being without compromising on style or functionality.

We take pride in transforming your vision into reality, consistently delivering exceptional results. Our comprehensive project design services complement our expertise in building, roofing, carpentry, and VELUX window replacements and installations.

Why Drinking Enough Water Is Your Secret

Wellness Weapon

When it comes to health and wellness, the simplest habits often have the biggest impact. Staying hydrated is one of those habits—and it’s easy to overlook, especially during colder months when thirst isn’t as noticeable. But proper hydration is a gamechanger for your body and mind, affecting everything from energy levels to digestion.

Why Hydration is Key to Wellness

Your body is around 60% water, which means every system depends on it. Staying hydrated supports:

• Brain Function: Dehydration can lead to brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and even headaches.

• Energy Levels: Feeling fatigued or sluggish? Dehydration is often a hidden culprit.

• Digestion: Water helps break down food and keeps your digestive system running smoothly.

• Healthy Skin: Dry, dull skin can be a sign you’re not drinking enough water.

In winter, the dry air from heating systems and less noticeable thirst cues can easily lead to dehydration—so it’s even more important to pay attention to your intake.

Signs of Dehydration You Might Miss

While feeling thirsty is the most obvious sign, dehydration can show up in more subtle ways, such as:

• Fatigue or low energy.

• Dark yellow urine or infrequent urination.

• Dry skin or lips.

• Irritability or mood swings.

• Cravings for salty or sugary snacks (your body sometimes confuses hunger with thirst).

The Truth About Coffee, Tea, and Hydration

Caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea have a reputation for being dehydrating because caffeine is a mild diuretic. However, recent research shows that for regular coffee or tea drinkers, moderate consumption doesn’t always lead to dehydration.

That said, balance is key. Overconsuming caffeinated drinks—especially more than 3–4 cups daily—can lead to dehydration, particularly if they are replacing water in your routine.

To stay hydrated:

• Limit caffeinated beverages to 2–3 cups per day.

• Pair your coffee or tea with a glass of water.

• Opt for herbal teas or decaf options in the afternoon and evening.

This way, you can enjoy your coffee or tea while maintaining your hydration levels in check.

Simple Hydration Hacks for Winter

If you struggle to drink enough water, these tips can help:

1. Warm it Up: Sip on warm herbal teas or hot water with lemon for a comforting hydration boost.

2. Infuse Your Water: Add slices of orange, cucumber, or fresh mint for a burst of flavour. My favourite is adding fresh Rosemary, which can boost focus.

3. Eat Your Water: Foods like oranges, cucumbers, and soups have high water content.

4. Create a Routine: Keep a water bottle by your desk or set reminders to drink regularly throughout the day.

Why Hydration Is Your Secret Weapon

Hydration isn’t just about quenching thirst—it’s a cornerstone of wellness. It boosts energy, enhances digestion, supports glowing skin, and even helps regulate mood. Plus, staying hydrated naturally curbs overeating, as thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

If you take your hydration seriously, your body will thank you for it with better focus, increased energy, and improved overall health.

Boost your wellbeing, strengthen your immunity, and elevate your mood

The first time you step into a Cryochamber, the sensation is indescribable—a rush of cold that’s both shocking and invigorating, a full-body wake-up call to your system. As the temperature plummets to an astonishing -120°C, your heart races, your breath sharpens, and your body begins an extraordinary transformation. This is whole-body cryotherapy (WBC), an experience that not only tests your limits, but also unlocks a cascade of benefits for your mood, immunity, and overall wellbeing.

Cryotherapy may feel cutting-edge, but its origins date back to 1978, when Dr. Toshima Yamauchi in Japan first used the treatment to alleviate symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. For patients plagued by joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, it offered significant relief. Fast-forward to today, and cryotherapy has evolved into a powerful tool, not only for recovery and athletic performance, but also for boosting the immune system and enhancing mood—thanks, in part, to the cold-exposure teachings of Wim Hof.

While cold showers and ice baths offer a start, the stateof-the-art cryochamber at Light Blue Clinic in Girton, Cambridge, takes cold therapy to the next level. Renowned for supporting Cambridge University rowers, Cambridge United, and Cambridge Rugby athletes, the clinic also welcomes everyone—from office workers managing pain to weekend warriors seeking faster recovery—to experience the transformative benefits of cryotherapy.

The cold never felt so good.

What makes cryotherapy so transformative?

Stepping into the cryochamber is an experience like no other—a rush of icy air that jolts your body into action. As the extreme cold envelops you, your cardiovascular system shifts into high gear, redirecting blood flow to protect your vital organs and maintain core temperature. This natural response sets off a chain reaction: circulation improves, inflammation melts away, and recovery kicks into overdrive.

When you step back out, the warmth rushes in, sending oxygen and nutrients flooding back into your extremities, soothing soreness and revitalising your energy. At the same time, a wave of mood-boosting endorphins lifts your spirits, and your immune system gets a fortifying boost. It’s not just a treatment— it’s a full-body reset, leaving you refreshed, restored, and ready to take on the world.

The Gold Standard: A Personalised Chill

According to research, the optimal Cryotherapy session lasts 3 minutes and 30 seconds at a brisk -120°C, ideally twice a week. But at Light Blue Clinic, the experience is tailored to the individual. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned cold enthusiast, the team ensures your session is safe, effective, and perfectly aligned with your needs.

Before entering the cryochamber, every client undergoes a medical check, including blood pressure monitoring, and receives protective clothing to ensure comfort and safety.

A new era in Cryotherapy

In response to growing demand, Light Blue Clinic is unveiling a cutting-edge electric cryochamber this February. Unlike older systems, this chamber offers enhanced availability and convenience, making it easier than ever to incorporate cryotherapy into your routine.

The clinic’s offerings don’t stop there. With a holistic approach to health and performance, Light Blue Clinic provides physical therapy, osteopathy, strength and conditioning, and specialises in training for female athletes—including tailored support for menopausal women.

Ready to experience the freeze?

Stepping into a cryochamber might sound intimidating, but for those who embrace the chill, it’s a moment of awakening—a gateway to recovery, resilience, and renewal. Whether you’re chasing peak performance or simply seeking balance in your daily life, cryotherapy at Light Blue Clinic offers an experience as powerful as it is invigorating.

Are you ready to take the plunge? The cold never felt so good. For more information and to book scan the QR code or visit www.lightblue.clinic.

Whether in the mountains of Whistler or the coastal beauty of Tofino, the land itself is a source of healing. The region’s focus on sustainability and eco-friendly practices also enhances its wellness appeal, making it a place where both nature and community are nurtured.

For many, wellness on the West Coast isn't just about spa treatments or outdoor activities; it's about a lifestyle. Farmers' markets, organic cafes, and locally owned wellness boutiques have become part of the region's fabric. The emphasis on healthy eating, outdoor fitness, and environmental consciousness makes the West Coast a destination where wellness is not just a temporary escape but a way of life.

How Data-Driven Insights Can Transform Your Well-Being Decoding Stress

Is it just us or does stress now seem almost as routine as a morning coffee? Beyond the occasional frazzled feeling, do you ever think about what stress is actually doing to our bodies? Stress, it turns out, can have profound physiological effects, from high cortisol levels to increased blood pressure, with consequences on our immune systems and energy levels. In a bid to better understand and hopefully improve our own stress levels, we recently completed a three-month trial with the Human Energy Optimisation program. This journey, backed by hard data on our stress levels, opened our eyes to the impact of everyday choices on our well-being.

Monitoring Stress Through Data

Human Energy Optimisation have partnered with Firstbeat Technologies to create a science-backed, physiological metrics program that reveals what’s really happening beneath the surface. The Firstbeat device, a small heart rate monitor, tracks stress and recovery patterns by analysing heart rate variability (HRV), a subtle yet powerful indicator of physiological strain or relaxation. By connecting with the Firstbeat LifeTM platform, the monitor breaks down stress into quantifiable, understandable data.

Our HEO coach, Sophia Hodges, recommended we started by taking a 3-day baseline measurement.

The monitor was worn daily, 24/7 throughout the period to gather reliable data on how our bodies were handling different situations, from work presentations to watching TV in the evenings at home. Firstbeat Life's platform then offered insights into how our bodies reacted in real time to each of these moments. Sophia walked us through the equipment and showed us how to read the data but her crucial part to play came with the regular check-ins and coaching to help us understand what we were looking at, and offering guidance on areas we were doing well in as well as ideas on ways to improve.

Physiological Effects of Stress: A Look Inside

Seeing the data on our stress levels was genuinely enlightening. Until then, like many, we had largely guessed at what might be stressing us out. But the HEO program replaced our assumptions with hard facts. For instance, one member of the team had long believed that scrolling on her phone was a way to relax. Yet, the data told a different story; that ‘relaxation’ time was actually increasing stress levels and even impacted the quality of sleep later that night. It was an eye-opener that really made us rethink the way that different activities affect physiological stress levels.

The impact of stress was laid bare for us. Increased heart rate, reduced HRV, and prolonged recovery times all became real markers of what stress looked like for our bodies. The analytics even showed how stress affected our sleep cycles, as stress carried over into evening hours, occasionally reducing the quality of rest. The combination of physical and emotional stressors became more apparent in the readings than ever.

Lifestyle Adjustments

Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this journey was the way it motivated changes. Seeing tangible data on stress levels and recovery patterns became a powerful motivator. The adjustments were small to begin with, like increasing physical activity and introducing short, mindful breaks during more stressful periods. Over time, we could actually see these changes reflected in the data. Our HRV improved, and recovery times shortened. Even our sleep quality saw an uptick.

One of the best parts was watching the progress in real-time. Changes we might once have dismissed as trivial; a 10-minute walk, switching to an earlier workout time, or even eating lunch away from our desks, started making a clear difference. Each week, we could see our bodies responding positively. And knowing that these choices were actively reducing our stress levels was incredibly satisfying.

As well as feeling empowered by this new knowledge and understanding of how stress affects our bodies, we have been completely inspired to make changes to our lifestyles. We would encourage any reader to embark on this journey of discovery too, in the hope that you can arrive at a destination where you can manage and control stress rather than to keep letting it control and negatively affect you. TOWN HALL

The Royston Town Hall, a historic cornerstone of the town, was built in 1855 on the site of the old turnpike tollgate cottage. Originally serving as the Royston Institute, it housed an assembly room and smaller spaces dedicated to the education of ‘mechanics’—skilled workmen—long before the introduction of universal education acts.

In 1900, the newly formed Royston Urban District Council purchased the building for £600, repurposing it as the Town Hall. Over the years, it has undergone various extensions and improvements but has remained the seat of local government in Royston. Today, it also accommodates two public halls, including the upper hall, named in honour of the Earl of Hardwicke, then owner of Wimpole Hall, whose patronage made the Institute’s construction possible. His legacy is marked by a small bust on the façade, alongside the Royston Coat of Arms.

A more recent transformation has seen the Town Hall evolve into the home of the Royston Picture Palace—a stateof-the-art digital community cinema, breathing new life into this historic venue. The Picture Palace carries forward Royston’s rich cinematic history, following in the footsteps of the much-loved Priory Cinema, which once stood prominently on the roundabout to the left. An iconic local landmark, the Priory Cinema was a treasured gathering place for generations of film lovers, and though it is now long gone, its spirit endures in Royston’s vibrant film culture.

The Priory Cinema

Opened on 27th November 1933 with Diana Wynyard in “Cavalcade”, it had an original seating capacity of 600 in stalls and circle. Seats were priced from 9d to 2/4d. It replaced the earlier (1913) Cinema that was located at a different location at 1 Priory Lane, which was destroyed by fire in June 1933. The architect of the Priory Cinema was E.B. Parkinson of Cambridge.

Even though Wonka isn’t penned by Roald Dahl himself, it masterfully captures the nostalgic magic of his storytelling. The film introduces a cast of quirky, larger-than-life characters that feel right at home in Dahl’s universe, reminiscent of the mischievous Twits or the villainous trio of Boggis, Bunce, and Bean from Fantastic Mr. Fox. At the heart of it all is Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka, delivering a dazzling performance that blends humor, charm, and musical brilliance. His portrayal carries subtle echoes of the legendary Gene Wilder, balancing whimsy with depth. And to top it all off, Hugh Grant’s hilariously eccentric take on an Oompa Loompa is an absolute delight, adding an extra layer of fun to this enchanting adventure. A family feel good film with something for everyone.

I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 2)

Teddy Swims

POP / 2025 / 13 TRACKS / 40MINS

REVOLUTION RECORDS RECOMMEND

The 13-track album showcases standout collaborations, including “Are You Even Real” featuring GIVĒON and “Black & White” with Muni Long, along with “She Got It,” which unites Coco Jones and GloRilla.

Swims made his name sharing YouTube covers of everyone from Marvin Gaye to Amy Winehouse, and indeed ‘I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part Two)’ speaks to this eclecticism. The funk-fuelled ‘She Got It’ briefly segues into brooding beats, while he channels ‘Frank’-era Amy on the jazzy ‘Your Kind of Crazy’. Best of all, though, is ‘Funeral’, which featured on the C24 mixtape. Its heartbreaking lyrics (“You wore that little black dress to my funeral”) are as timeless as its Motown sound, which is neatly updated with pounding house piano. At once old and new, steeped in pain yet deeply soothing, it’s Teddy Swims all over.

The release arrives as Swims continues to ride the wave of his monumental success with “Lose Control,” the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hit that saw his breakthrough. In March 2024, “Lose Control” climbed to the No. 1 spot after a record-breaking 32 weeks, marking the longest ascent to the summit by a solo male artist in the chart’s 65-year history.
