UPPER KING STREET

Arrive at the top end of Lower King St. This was once the location for the market in medievil times. Once known as ‘Back Street’ and even ‘Death Street’ given the number of people living there who passed away from the plague.

Present day, it has a more uplifitng significance as the location for Royston’s christmas tree.

Just before No.21 (pictured left) you have Mulburry Court, winner of a North Herts. Civic Award for conservation. and just past No.21 there is a converted barn, which was once part of the racing stables on Princes Mews (see STONES vol.4). Cross the road and start to head up the back of the High St. onto Upper King St. Very little has changed on this street since the 19th century. Notice the pargetting – which is the art of patterns and decoration in the external plaster of the buildings.

Arriving at the top of the street where it meets the High St. you find Sun Hill House, which was formally a public house called ‘The Sun’.
