AREA: MILL EFFLUENT SECONDARY CONTAINMENT

PRODUCTS USED: • STONCHEM 403

Extreme seasonal freeze/thaw cycling, chemical corrosives and thermal cycling presented a challenge for this mill effluent secondary containment area, on the banks of the Athabasca River, in Alberta. The newly poured concrete wall contained air-voids that had to be preaddressed. This system also required a sealed surface with good acid, abrasive and other effluent resistance. A strong corporate environmental policy also required a proven, durable solution. THE CHALLENGE When Stonhard came to inspect this Pulp and Paper facility in 1990, the lower floor of the Scrubber Building was showing evidence of extreme damage. The area was constantly inundated with highly corrosive spills,

resulting in concrete loss of 2.5” - 4” and exposed, corroded rebar. THE STONHARD SOLUTION The concrete was parged and primed, with 400 series primer, the level the surface, fill the holes and provide a solid base for Stonchem 403 to adhere with Stonchem 403 is a 100% solids, elastomeric lining system. This high-build coating provides a durable, flexible and strong membrane with an extremely rapid cure. It demonstrates excellent resistance to caustics, moderate concentrations of acids and petroleum products. Stonchem 403 exhibits superior abrasion and ice resistance and is suitable for a wide range of substrate application.
