As part of a $6 million expansion at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, additional office and teaching space is being created by adding an extra storey above the Engineering and Applied Sciences Building at the St. John’s Campus. One of the key challenges faced by General Contractor, N. D. Dobbin was finding a solution to level an existing roof structure with all of its associated slopes and falls and convert it into a suitable floor. Several challenging issues surrounded this transformation, including surface contamination of the concrete from the old bituminous roofing system, removal of a perimeter edge cant and slopes to drains across the rest of the roof slab. Stonhard Construction Solutions was able to offer a single source
solution for this challenging project which started with the removal of the residue from the old roofing system by Blastrac and Prepmaster (surface rotary grinding). It was then followed by an application of our Penetrating Epoxy Primer to ensure bond to any residual contamination as well as fast track levelling with our StonFlow pumped Screed system. Stonhard mobilized two Utiform Quattro pumps, a 12 inch Blastrac machine and a Prep-Master to site to ensure that the project ran smoothly. StonCor Group completed the 13,200ft2 project over a two week period including the surface preparation, application of the bonding primer and pumping the StonFlow levelling material in three sections Project Manager for N. D. Dobbin, Jim Pennell described this as “a great job”.
