AREA: Aquarium Building DATE: 2001 LOCATION: Antwerp, Belgium AFTER

The Aquarium Building at the Zoo of Antwerp sustained heavy damage to the concrete and reinforcement caused by humidity and salt water. Due to expansion plans, the Zoo needed to repair the structure and increase the bearing capacity by a factor of 3 to put additional aquaria on top.

underneath. The spacer increased the lever arm effect of the beam thus increasing the strength and stiffness significantly. Without the spacer the additional strength could not have been achieved due to the limitation of the compressive strength of the concrete.

This project was the first application of CarboComp Sandwich using a lightweight composite beam consisting of a balsa wood ‘spacer’ with CarboComp Carbon Fibre Laminate bonded

Additional load carrying capacity in the supporting columns of the Aquarium Building was achieved by wrapping the columns in CarboComp Textile to reinforce the foundation.
