TORONTO CONDO BUILDING NEW APERTURE STRENGTHENING JOB DETAILS: MARKET: Architectural/Commercial PRODUCT: CarboComp 8012 Plus CarboComp 5800BL Adhesive AREA: New Door Opening for Mechanical Room DATE: 2014 MATERIAL QUANTITY: Approximately 30 Metres LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario

A 43 storey condo building in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District required a new doorway to be created into one of the Mechanical Rooms, allowing more convenient access from the adjacent gym. This involved cutting through the existing 400mm thick reinforced concrete wall and installing a new door and frame. Structural Engineers for the project designed a localized strengthening system to redistribute the load around the newly cut aperture and into the surrounding structure, which involved adhering Carbon Fibre Laminates around the opening on both sides of the wall.

The aperture was cut through the wall and supported prior to the installation of the Carbon Fibre Laminates by the C3 Group. CarboComp Plus Laminates (80mm wide and 1.2mm thick) were bonded into place with CarboComp 5800BL Adhesive. Two strips of laminate were applied vertically, horizontally (over the top of the opening only) and at 45 degrees in the top corners. CarboComp Plus is a unique vacuum-formed, multi directional Carbon Fibre Laminate that can be bonded and bolted into place. It offers a versatile, lightweight strengthening system that has high tensile strength and stiffness, is easy to apply, durable and requires no maintenance once installed.
