THE CHALLENGE Nackawic Bridge is a cable suspension bridge carrying Highway 105 across the St. John river in Nackawick, NB. It was built in 1967 with concrete piles and beams supporting a steel deck. The supporting concrete piles required substantial repairs following nearly 50 years of deterioration, ice impacts and environmental exposure. Considerable section loss and exposed reinforcement lead New Brunswick Department of Transport and Infrastructure to seek a long-term solution in this environmentally significant area.
THE SOLUTION Stonhard provided the ideal solution utilizing a Five Star Marine Pile Jacketing System consisting of PileForm F (FRP) Pile Rehabilitation Jackets (engineered fiberglass forms) filled with water resistant Five Star High Strength Under Water Grout. The piles were prepped with high pressure water to remove any loose and damaged concrete, and to prepare the steel. The jackets were installed by diving team, then braced and filled with grout, which has an anti-wash out additive to prevent environmental contamination. Once the grout was cured and bracing removed, the PileForm F Pile Jackets provided a permanent solution with the added advantage of additional impact and abrasion resistance.
