Peak Engineering and Design recently completed a project to upgrade the water filtration systems at Bath Water Treatment plant in Ontario for Loyalist Township. This included the installation of a new crane rail system, allowing direct access to the top of the refurbished tanks for improved process flow.

The new crane rails were attached directly to the roof slab which consisted of a series of abutting pre-stressed and precast concrete panels. As these panels were not originally designed for this additional loading, Stonhard designed and installed a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening system consisting of CarboComp Laminates bonded into place with 5800BL Epoxy to upgrade the carrying capacity of the roof slabs.

The Carbon Fibre was used to stiffen the precast roof panels, allowing them to carry the new crane rail loads by reinforcing

the underside of each panel. Due to concerns with panel deflection, a 3-D Modelling process was also undertaken at design stage to confirm that any deflection would remain within acceptable limits.

Stonhard Construction Solutions provided a complete turnkey design, supply and installation package for this project, and utilised some of the benefits of using CFRP, which include low self weight and ease of installation to install 250m of CarboComp Laminate in a single day to facilitate project progress.
