DATE: 2019 LOCATION: Halifax, Nova Scotia SUBSTRATE: Steel H Piles AFTER The continued safety and integrity of the Lockeport Wharf located in the Small Craft Harbour, was ensured by the recent repair project undertaken by Connors Diving Services of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The contract for the Department of Public Works was valued at $333,663 and included repairs to the Concrete Beams, Deck & Steel H Piles in conjunction with the addition of Pile Protection Jackets to “Structure 401”. As with any project on a marine structure, conservation measures were put in place to protect fish habitats, seabirds and the surrounding local environment. These included silt barriers, careful and responsible construction

techniques and measures to minimise disturbance and disruption to the silt bead during construction work. One of the techniques employed to allow for a quick and efficient repair to the supporting piles of the wharf was the utilisation of Five Star Marine’s preformed Fiberglass Pile Jackets supplied by Stonhard Construction Solutions. Pile Jackets act as pre-engineered fiberglass “forms” with a tongue and groove closure, which are placed around the pile to be repaired. The groove is sealed with an underwater epoxy gel adhesive and is screwed through to seal the halves together, ensuring a leakproof fit. The

Jacket is centred around the pile to be repaired and braced to resist any hydrostatic load from the infill. Once installed around the pile, the bottom of the form is plugged and the annular space between the pile and Jacket is filled with either a cement or epoxy infill product which displaces the seawater. This process ensures that any damage and deterioration in the existing pile is repaired without the need for more expensive and intrusive techniques such as extensive demolition or full removal and replacement. This repair technique effectively contains the infill material minimising any marine pollution during the repair process and the Fiberglass Pile jacket, which is left in place, becomes an integral part of the repair. The fiberglass of the Jacket greatly enhances the ability of the repaired pile to resist impact and abrasion from floating debris and ice, tidal erosion, chemical pollutants such as oils, acids, and of course salt water, which in turn improves the overall lifecycle of the repaired structure. Stonhard Construction Solutions supplied 16 custom fabricated Five Star Maine Fiberglass Pile Jackets to the dimensions supplied prior by Connors Dive Team. They arrived to site fully cured and ready for installation with all necessary hardware, fittings and straps. “Insert Quote from Connors if possible about ease of application and great service etc.
